As per Ellis Island, there is a Petro Wojtkow, 41, arriving on the Kroonland via Antwerp, 11/30/1909. He was heading to N. Alexandria, to his brother-in-law's (Iwan Starenczak). Manifest shows him coming from Rudenka??? Lists leaving wife Karolina.

Jerry,

Thank you! That was really helpful and now I feel like I have a starting point for my search. Also, thanks for the tip on the Catholic records. I know that my Pinino relatives were Lutheran and, most likely, the Ratz family was, too.

My Great-Great-Grandmother (Wentland) Ratz, had two sisters who settled in Canada, but I do not know where. One married a man named Miller and the other a man named Ferdnant.

Again, thank you for the help and I wish you all the best in your own searches.

Robin

I have just started to scour Belarusyn Telephone Directories, hitting many of the places that were contained within Minsk uezd/county> Minskaya gubernia/region> Czarist Russia. The surname (or variant) does not show up in Minsk proper.

Closest surnames to Bohok are Bohuk (found loads of these in Bobruisk). So far have seen NO BOHOK. Another variant that might be of interest is Bohovkov???? This is also not a common surname.
-----------------------------
Where was Tekla's daughter baptized?
Would have responded sooner but I have been off the Forum for our Canadian long weekend. The place you are looking for is almost certainly Brzezie. Since Ratz is Germanic, you will most likely be looking for Lutheran records. The good news is that records are available. The bad news is that at least some are only in the Archive in Wloclawek.

Pinino and Brzezie are both located in the Nieszawa Lutheran Parish, the records of which are in the Archive. We hope that the Nieszawa Lutheran records will be among those that become available online during the rest of this year.

I know for certain that there were Ratzes in this region as I have been on the search for possible Steinke / Kreutz connections there. In Catholic records, I found the marriage record of Michael Steinke to Euphrosine Ratz. That family eventually settled near Emerson, Manitoba. Lutherans were obligated to register at a Catholic Church if there was no Lutheran one close enough to do it.

Details of all available Lutheran Parish records in Russian Poland can be found at

https://sggee.org/research/parishes/church_parishes/Lutheran...

Jerry Frank

Great leads. Hadn't realized that Tekla (Tess) had been naturalized. That is a great place to start. Have very little info on Kusma. He likely changed his name or died soon after arriving. I think I have the most difficulty with the names being spelled in so many different ways. I also suspected that Nikolai and Samuel were the same person. My fiance's mother knew very little about him as she was young when he died. All good stuff! Thanks!

The following site has a small history about Dunovitz or Dinavitz. I too have a copy of the book by Scharfstein as my grandfather came from this town and was a member of the Dinawitzer Fraternal Society in New York City until his death. He is also buried in a section of a cemetery purchased by the Dinavitzers that contains a monument to the Martyrs that perished in the Holocaust.

http://jewua.org/dunayevtsy/

Nikolaj at some point became Samuel Bohok. Looks like he died 10/9/1929 at 33 yrs old from tuberculosis. Tesi (nee Tekla Halaszyn from Galicia - lists her father, Paul) died at 50. She was naturalized: record 2-809388 11/22/1940. That might help w/her village name. The one on manifest, Nartasor, is very poorly transliterated (sounds like). Nikolaj and Tekla lost 8 yr old son, Peter, to drowning.

(FYI death records indicate heart disease for many in this family.)

Is there any family history about Kusma/Kuzma, the father dob appx 1878??? Did he change his name as well?

Kusma (34) and his son, Nikolaj (14) were heading for Jersey City**. They arrived in NY 3/23/1912. They were emigrating from Minsk (today Belarus) > Czarist Russia. THEY HAD TO BE TRAVELING W/RUSSIAN PASSPORTS. Russian Consular Records might help clarify specifically where in the Minsk gubernia/region they were both born. Although you do not know exact place of origin, you might be able to pick up something using Soundex. Carefully read instructions. https://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermai...

***Have you looked into other Bohok in NJ?
Moroz is a very common surname in Ukraine. Currently there are 65,000 Moroz residing in Ukraine. Surname means FROST.

Selo/village Roz-zha-liv (Розжалів in Ukrainian), founded in 1456, still exists today as a cluster village (w/Andreyevka)> Radekhiv(skij) raion/district***> Lviv(ska) oblast/region > Ukraine , latest zip 80211. Population 1,070. Bilostik River runs thru the village.

****From late 18th century to 1918 under Austro-Hungarian domain, it was officailly called wies/village ROZDZALOW> Sokal was both powiat (adm district - county)and gmina (judicial-tax district)> Lemberg/Lwow/Lviv region >Historic Galicia Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austrian Emperors. During the Interwar Period under Reconstituted Poland's domain, it stayed the same, until after WW2 under the Soviets, the district was assigned to Radekhiv and village was called by its Ukrainian name.

In order to avoid confusion, best to research church registers and get all direct family names straight. LDS has filmed GC Church Records for your ancestral village for 1784-1909. https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/1457842

If you have no exp researching LDS Films, there are some exc how-to tutorials in following link.
i am researching my fiance's family tree. Found Nikolai (b1889)and Kusma Bohok (b1878)arriving from Minsk, Russia via Liverpool to NYC but cannot find any other record prior to their arrival in NY on 23 Mar 1912. I subscribed to the international search on Ancestry.com but there seems to be very little coming out of Russia. Can anyone offer suggestions of where I should try next? I found the Albany Rural Cemetary records (Menands, NY) for Nikolai's wife Tekla (Tess) Halashin (or Halazon) (b 19 Feb 1901 in Ukraine - d 24 Sep 1950)but nothing else. I am truly stumped!

Ukrainian Military Records???

I am not sure what you mean? Ukraine had not existed as an geopolitical entity up until 1918. That lasted a big five minutes. Both what is East and West Ukraine had been under the Austrian, Russian and Polish boot for a long time. The lands that are Ukraine today were referred to as the Breadbasket of Europe and the loamy soil that is found there, was the treasure that held the interest of neighboring aggressors like Poland, Russia and Germany (including Austria, which was Germanic) for hundreds of yrs.

If you are referring to muster rolls for the Austro-Hungarian Military, they can be elusive. LDS has filmed the copies that might be available. You need the powiat (county) records. That is where the conscription took place. As far as the Austrian Military Archives in Vienna are concerned, archivists there claim that these records were turned over to the appropriate country archives and are no longer in their possession.
Thank you for your help and kind words. I really wish that I had more substantial documentation about their home city/country. I'm not quite on solid ground yet!

Today, I went back to the passenger list and was excited to notice that there was a "supplement" document which corresponds to each passenger (I knew I should have turned the page!!). For each member of the Ratz family it stated:

Color - W
Country - Russia
Province - Sherlitz (Shenlitz??)
Mother Tongue - German
Subject of What Country - Russia

Attached is the document if anybody wants to take a look at it. No. 1-6 pertain to my Ratz family members.

Thanks, again!

Robin

One of the things that frequently occurred after immigration, was that choice of spouse was not only made based on same ethnicity or religion, but also on commonality of same regions or same districts of origin. There was a comfort in those choices.

Zlateca and I are old hands at this kind of research and this is more often fact, than assumption.

In your case you had a relative to point you in the correct direction. That little piece of information was critical to your search. When getting started, the suggestion is to gather all and any documentation, which you have done. It is a process and you are doing very well.

I am not sure, but I suspect you will need to examine both RC and GC Church Registers. LDS has filmed both. Start w/RC Registers.

During Soviet Era, Jezupil was called selishsche (cluster town) Zhovten. Today it is again called Єзупiль = Yezupil > Tysmenytsya raion/district> Ivano-Frankivska oblast. It is a very picturesque, but sleepy town. There is a lot of interesting history here. I can tell you that it was founded in 1597 by settlers from a place called Dukhova Krynytsia (Spiritual Spring), who were running from the Tartar slave raids. More detail & explanation of district change to come later, when I have more time.

http://drymba.net/en/map/1031269-smt-yezupil
====================================================

Title
Metrical books, 1835-1865

Authors
Greek Catholic Church.
Variants of surname, rooted in male given name HAWRYLO - HAVRYLO

There are many, many variants of this surname in Ukrainian. I am clarifying only the ones of interest to posters in this thread.

Hawryluk - Hawrylyuk = Гаврилук-Гаврилюк. Currently 44,000 w/lyuk-liuk variant surname living in Ukraine.

Hawrylyak/liak = Гавриляк (Although rooted in same male name Hawrylo/Havrylo, the suffix iak/yak makes it a different surname.) Appx 3,300 Hawryliak living in Ukraine today.

Hawrycszak = Гаврищак. Appx 160 Hawrycszak living in Ukraine, mostly in Ternopil and general Podolia regions.

Hawrylyshyn/Hawrylyszyn = Гаврилишин. Mostly in Historic Galicia Province, w/greatest concentration in Ternopil and Lviv regions. The suffix SHYN/SZYN makes the surname distinctly Ukrainian. It is unusual, because it has a female root.
======================
The key is to locate the EXACT PLACE OF ORIGIN.

Best to start w/Hamburg (exit port) Immigration Records.
http://search.ancestry.com/

Ancestry Membership, even a temp one, will allow viewing the ship manifests, where the details can be invaluable.
==========================
==========================
Understanding what and where AUSTRIA was from late 18th century to 1918. It is not today's Austria. Short read makes it easy to understand.
http://www.infoukes.com/genealogy/trac/baba.html
Yes, and it should also be noted that my Pinino relatives and my Brz?? relatives are from separate branches.

My G-Grandfather was from Pinino and he married my G-Grandmother, who was from Brz??, but they didn't meet until after their families had already settled in the United States (one family in WI and the other in MI). They are both Germans from Russia-Poland, but I cannot assume that there was any real connection between the families prior to their marriage.

Hello Zlateca.

I would normally agree w/you re Ponino and Brzezie being places of origin, but one of the family relatives has provided us w/a major clue, Ukraine.

Many of the Wandering Wohlynian Germans did have Prussian origins and that probably serves as the cultural and social connection in this case, as opposed to the comfort of regional connection between the families from Ponino and Brz????

Names like Russia/Poland and Poland Congress was and still are easier on the Polish digestive tract. Technically there was no such geopolitical entity as Poland from late 18th century to 1918. If you are interested in history for this region, I recommend reading "Bitter Glory" by Richard Watt. This is a history book written in a narrative style and offers several explanations why the Kingdom of Poland was partitioned into oblivion for appx 125+ yrs and why Western Europe deemed it necessary to be in agreement w/this partition.
=====================
Great-Grandmother's brother listed "Ukraine" as a birthplace on a draft card.

Following is Interwar Period Reconstituted Poland's (1919-1938) place names starting w/letters BRZ in what was formerly the old Vohlynskaya gubernia > Czarist Russia. Compare these with what is available on Jerry Frank's site.

Bryszcze (I i II), Kniahininek, Łuck
Bryszcze, Młynów, Dubno
Brzegi , Werba, Włodzimierz
Brzezina, Chotiaczów, Włodzimierz
Brzezina, Dederkały, Krzemieniec
Brzezina, Diatkiewicze, Równe
Brzezina, Grzybowica, Włodzimierz
Brzezina, Kniahinin, Dubno
Brzezina, Poddębce, Łuck
Brzezina, Rafałówka, Sarny
Brzezina, Silno, Łuck
Brzezina, Włodzimierzec, Sarny
Brzeziny, Bereżce, Luboml
Brzeziny, Chotiaczów, Włodzimierz
Brzozowa Karczma, Kniahininek, Łuck
Brzozowy Gród, Kiwerce, Łuck
Brzuchowicze, Hołoby, Kowel
Brzuszków, Kostopol, Kostopol

http://www.wolyn.ovh.org/
===================================
It is important to keep in mind when a particular document was issued.
My time is limited today.

Bykow probably means PLACE of BULL???

Since we have documentation, we can now eliminate the info provided by your researcher.

I suspect that Grandmother's Bykow is due west of Sokal, the district seat, and is located right over the Polish border in POLAND. This makes a lot more sense for the migratory route. Most villagers rarely migrated much beyond thirty miles of their birth villages.

Additionally, post WW2 this very immediate region saw some very major shifts in borders between Stalin's Soviet Union and Communist Poland.
------------------
Note to self:
Zvirka absorbed 107 village populations, that were not resettled?

Yes, they are quite possibly Vohlynian Germans. I have done a lot of family research, but the Russia/Poland region is new to me.

Thank you for the list of villages. I think you may be on to something as my Great-Grandmother's brother listed "Ukraine" as a birthplace on a draft card.

I did recently discover the SGGEE...thank you for the referral! Their email group has been very kind and helpful.

Robin

?????
Ratz Family - Vohlynian or Prussian Germans?

You should examine villages in Congress of Poland Gazetteer (Russia-Poland). I found Ponino in this list: Pinino (W of Poczalkowo), Aleksandrow Kujawski, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Poland. Here you will also find a whole list of villages starting w/BRZ as well.
https://www.sggee.org/research/Gazetteer_Poland.pdf

I strongly suggest that you become a member at this org. A lot of the hard work has already been done here. This site was founded by Jerry Frank, expert extraordinaire, re German research in these regions. https://www.sggee.org/

My other relatives (Reinholz/Reinhold) are from Pinino.

On this map, Pinino is located in B2. The Brzezie that I found on this same map is located in F2.

http://ipgs.us/maps/atlas1907/maps/map07.jpg

My Great-Grandfather (Edward Reinhold) is from Pinino and my Great-Grandmother (Natalie Ratz) is one of the children on this passenger list. They didn't meet until they had already been in the United States, so I can't assume that they were from the same area, but it certainly is possible.

Ultimately, I hope to figure out where the birth/marriage/death records from this part of Poland are kept so that I can learn more about all of their lives prior to arriving in the U.S.

I could not find a city named Brzizis on any of the maps. Maybe I'm just not seeing it???

I did find a city named Brzezie, which is in Poland, but the same general region that my other relatives often referred to as Russia-Poland. I wonder if that is it??

I do not know if Joseph or his sons were naturalized, but I can look into that.

Thank you!

Thank you Mighthelp and ZlaticaBeca for all of your assistance!

I found a GaliciaPoland-Ukraine board on Yahoo! Groups and also posted my document scan there. I had the name of the village translated wrong all this time! It is Byshov - 13 miles WSW of Skobelka, which is where my grandmother's family moved. This short travel distance makes more sense.

Byshev, Byshov, Byshuv, Byszów populated place 50°24' N 24°32' E E M U G Ukraine 263.2 miles W of Kyyiv

Byshov, Galicia, Austrian Empire bordered the Russian Empire/Volyn. I have attached a map detail. Byshov is the letter A.

Apparently, LDS has metrical records for this village, so I guess that will be my next step.

Thank you again for your guidance and help. I deeply appreciate it. ~Kim
