My family are also descendants of Joseph b.1810 and Barbara, thru their son Joseph b.1837, his son Joseph b. 1876, married to Katerina Zeisler and immigrated to Macklin, Saskatchen. I wonder after travelling that far if our families knew how close they were. As far as why they went to Russia, were you aware that the Duchess of Wuttenberg at that time was the sister of Alexander III of Russia. Because of the French revolvation, the crops were being burned either by one side or another and her people were starving. She was known as a great Humanian of her time and begged her brother from help. He in turned had defeated the Turks and Tarters in the area and was very interested in settling friendly farmers in the area of what is now the Ukraine.

Looking for information on families who stayed: Jacob and Christina (Guenthner) Kilber and their children Wilhelmina, Elisabetha, Heinrich, Dorothea, Rosina, Magdalena, Christina, Reinholdt, Alexander, Johannes. Marriages were to Haar, Eduard Dubs, Heinrich Murchel (I found him and wife Wilhelmina and some of their descendants), Heinrich Ellwein (d. around 1914). Other marriages unknown. Probably lived in various daughter colonies of Zuerichtal.

My grandfather was Ilko Denega. Did you go to my tree? It shows everyone. Is it visible? He had brothers and sisters. Anna Martinow was Antonius wife (parents to Ilko)

These siblings may not be correct now that Ivan sent me this second list that follows:

Nicolas Denega
Cathanna Denega
1875 –
Catharina Denega
1885 – 1887
Eudoxia Deynega 12
1885 –
John Denaga
1885 – 1951
Matrasus Denega
1886 –
Catherina Denega
1887 –
Maria Denega
1888 – 1888
Ilko Julian Denega
1889 – 1944
Michael Denega
1889 –
Anastasia Deynega
1893 – 1895
Stephanus Deynega
1900 –
Theodorus Deynega
1903 – 1977

Since they had a Maria and she died shortly after birth it's possible they had another that I just don't know about.
_________________________________
Now according to Tho's son the brothers and sisters are as follows:

Nicolay---Maria (daughter) Myhaylo(son)
Ivan and Ilko - went to the US
Stephan went to Argentina
Andriy- went to Poland
Vasiliy-Nickolay (son) Ivan (son)
Yavdokia- Stephan (son) Teodar (son) Katerina born 1926
Teodor- Fedir(son still alive) Ivan ( I am communicating with)

My Great Grandmother's family name was Dinega or Dimega. Her name was Mary and she married my Great Grandfather Blazy or Blazcy Niklowicz (although could have been Niklewicz). I don't know the date of their marriage or where either of them was born. My Grandfather, Andrew, was born 13 May 1890, in Zabokruki (Zhabokruky?), Bibrka, Galicia (Austro-Hungary). I confirmed with a professor at a University in Poland that Niklowicz is a Polish name and I believe my
Grandfather's paternal family was Polish. Andrew had 2 brothers, Michael and Alexander. Alexander may have used a variation Niklowitz. I find variations of spellings depending on who was doing the writing and how they heard the name. I was told by someone in Poland that the Niklewicz clan was big in Poland. Who was your Grandfather?

What is your grand uncles name? Ask his daughter about the Romaniv family in Bakivtsi. I am sure that she can contact the municipal office in Bakivtsi (Баковецька сільська рада). Telephone # 3239-61-5-41 (тел. 3239-61-5-41).

I just discovered that there is also a place by the name of Bakivtsi in the Lutskyi raion, Volynska oblast (Луцький район, Волинська область).

You mention Wotocho Lubiszka. Would that happen to be Liubeshka in the Peremyshlianskyi, Lviv oblast. (Любешка,
Львівська область, Перемишлянський район ).

There are Skuta individuals in Liubeshka.

There is a Skuta Ekaterina, born 1924, living in Bakivtsi/Bakowice.
СКРУТА ЕКАТЕРИНА ИВАНОВНА 1924-06-07 БАКІВЦІ

There is also a Skuta Stepan, son of Mykhailo, born 1937, living in Zhydachiv with his wife.
СКРУТА СТЕПАН МИХАЙЛОВИЧ 1937-08-12 ЖИДАЧІВ ДРУКАРСЬКА	8 0 14

From records and dates I have determined that house numbers 15 in Wotocho Lubiszka? were the Skruta Family home.
Death records indicate Theodores and Antonius died there in 1853. Also Joannes Catherina Skruta died there.

#13 is also listed for Catherinea Joannis (death+) 1850

Then Joannas and Cathanna are listed in #34 for births: Anna 1879, Eudoria 1886, Stephanis 1895, Basilius 1898,Joannes 1890, Michael 1902, Martha 1892, Eudoxia 1886, Anna 1889,

Then in 1901 there is a Joannis and Maria Zodroznia in #34-4

House numbers for Romanows were 24, 25, 84, 46, 12,55,32 54( Anna b. to Michael)

My mother's mother was a Romaniv( Hamorowska, Skruta) and my DNA will follow that side of the family forever with little fluctuation. I ended up an H1 which is a Hapsburg line. It would be nice to know where the Romanov live, what they do, where they came from etc. I have a passion for finding the family through history.

Martha came from (Joannes Romanow X Catherine Hamorowska) Joannes came from Michallis Romanow X Catherine Paliwooda). Catherine Hamorowska came from (Andreaii Hamorowska X Barbara Skruta) Barbara Skruta came from ( Joannes Warwany Skruta X Catherine ?)

Why wouldn't the Denega family want to share the news? I have been in constant contact with them with letters and pictures going back and forth. They seem anxious to show me around LOL. I wish I could directly write to my grand uncle but I have have to rely on his daughter and granddaughter, who is a teacher in Lviv. I hear he is very sick but I can't get there and it breaks my heart.

Okay... I have put some thought into this.

The name was Romanow (Pol.); now in Ukraine it is Romaniv. There are 37 Romaniv in Kvitneve, but can not be sure whether they live in Kvitneve, Lviv or Kvitneve, Khelynytskyi.

Seeing that Kvitneve, Lviv has a population of only 419, it has been joined with the nearby vllage Bakivtsi, therefore they share the mayor and postoffice with Kvitneve.

There are 9 Romaniv listed as living in Bakivtsi. The oldest one is Ivan (John), son of Vasyl, born 1940.
(РОМАНІВ ІВАН ВАСИЛЬЕВИЧ 1940-05-27 БАКІВЦІ}

I gather that your Dienega do not care to share you with the Romaniv's. How are you related to the Romaniv's? Your mother is Dienega?

Who do you think you should write to?

Oh I would love to go. If you go again maybe you can look up the Romanow (v) name for me. I can find records in the family history center of the family but when they changed to Ukrainian language I was lost. It's like Chinese to me. It is near Lviv, south east of the city. Not sure what district. My poor cousins there would love to meet me. Oh well someday maybe if I win the lottery and I'm not too old by then...LOL

Bilohirskyi raion (Білогірський район), Khelnytska oblast(Хмельницька область) or Zhydachivskyi raion(Жидачівський район), Львівська область (Lvivska oblast)?

Yes, I read Ukrainian. I found family in the Ivano-Frankivs'k area during a tour in 1996, and have been back many times.

Deinega (Дейнега) is a common name, with a population near 6000. The Romanov (Романов) name, a population of near 12000.

I am not into meanings of family names. Fred Hoffman has published a surname book. I would guess that Romanov, Romanovsky, and others come from Roman..thus name means son of Roman. Дейн means Dane...likely means nothing to your family name, unless a Viking got left behind in your village!!! p.s. I have not heard of Dane to be a Slavic name.

Do you know any of the Ukrainian history of the two names?

Thank you. The Americanized version was Denega and my mom changed the spelling to Danega to confuse us even more. I found cousins and my mother's cousin still living in Kvitneve. They took pictures on graves and want me to come visit. I wish I could afford to. I have yet to find a Romanow family from the same town.

I have found my family of former Zabokruki now Kvitneve.
Names in this village incluse Romanow, Hutnik, Hamorowski, Martynow, Rudyk, Bojarin, Palliwoda, Diminity?) This family spells their name Deynega so keep an open mind on spellings. The furthst we go back is to Antin( Antonius 1850) and Anna Martynow Deynega. They had Nicolay, Ivan( John, to Long Island, NY, the US), Ilko ( to Long Island, NY the US), Stephan ( went to Argentina), Andriy ( Went to Poland) Vasiliy, Yavdokia, and Teodor ( Ivan his son is to whom I'm writing) all births around Ilko's being 1889. House # 69, 12, 43,23 in Zabokruki all pertain to this family.

Hello Denega,

I read your post many years ago now and I have some new information regarding my family who came from the Zhabokrucky area of the Ukraine (listed as Austria). Ontin or Anthony was father to Ilko or Elko (born 1894).Elko married Marta Romanow and they resided in West Islip, New York. Elko had brothers one of which was John I believe. John had many sons; Peter and Paul (twins) and John. He also had one girl. They too lioved on LI, NY. Any connection? Elko's sons were John and Anthony so the names run through the family. On Yahoo they have a list serve on Galacia. This is the area where the Denegas seem to have come from. You may want to check it out.

Barb

My Denegas settled on Long Island from NYC where they came in through Ellis Island from Zhabokucky Ukraine(Austria). They were Ruthenarian . Ilko or Elko (1894)was my grandfather's name and he had a brother John. Twins run in the family. John had twin boys Peter and Paul. I also had an uncle Johnny who was a decorated WWII vet. His father is listed as Ontin I am told and the name Anthony does run in the family. Contact me if any of this sounds familiar.

Barbara

Clarification:

I have just found that Romanow is correct and Denega is correct. Both members, spouses came from Zabokruki southeast of L'viv (once called Lemberg). Zabokruki is on the Austrain Hungarian maps. They were in the Galcia area. The town is on P129. If anyone knows where records can be found for this town please contact me. Marta (father -Roman) and Ilko (father Ontin or Anthony) came over around 1911 to New York and settled in West Islip, New York. A brother of Marta's (Romanow) did go to Agentina to Buenos Aries.

My family name ended up being Romanov. As for Denega I'm not sure from what region this name came from, I assume the Ukraine. There is a name on my grandfather's papaers but I can't make it out. Marta Romanov came to NY and if I have the right ship manefest Rowen or Roman looks to be her father. RaboKoulli ? is the name of her town?

Diana,

My grandfather, Myron Denega was born in Ukraine and came to Buenos Aires (Argentina) in 1923 or 1924 when he was 18 years old.

Do you have information about those who came to Argentina ?

Regards,

Claudio

Would you mind checking your book to see if the familt names of Erdmann, Schott (Schut), Ehrlich are listed? I have been perplexed about why my friend's grandparents would say that they were German when they immigrated from Krym, Russia (Crimea, Ukraine). This bit of history lesson explains that. Thank you so much!

Eileen Taft
tafte@cfl.rr.com
New Smyrna Beach, FL

I read in an article that in Venezuela there was a combination of Communist and Nationalist Ukraines immigrating in 1900. In Buenus Aires they lived in concentrated areas. The letter I found to my grandmother indicated he was a cousin not a brother. Many Romanovs or Romanows did end up there. Interestingly, the letter was written in Russian indicating that a cousin of my Romano (ow)(ov)was Russian.

As far as I know, my Russian/Ukranian family came to the US three generations back and some also went to Argentina. Someone else was mentioning the same kind of split in their family.

I am looking for the descendants of the Garshin and Kara-Murza families who lived in Crimea in the 19th and 20th century. In addition, any history of the families would also be welcome. There are many holes in my research and finding any information is a appreciated.
