Hi kika3, if you mean demographic books for Zakarpattya, they are in Uzhgorod.

I know only one example of research in Baia Mare on former Maramaros. My friend ordered it and got nothing although they listed some years for his village.

There are a lot of happy examples for Uzhgorod though.

Kika3.

Congratulations, that is quite an accomplishment.

You are the first in many yrs that has managed to successfully start organizing materials from the Zakarpatska region, that were filmed by LDS, but not indexed, and more importantly have followed through w/the project.

There are many descendants from this region, who cannot afford the cost of direct archival research. You are performing a great service.

If you need any help w/Gazetteer details, you need only ask.
=================================
Info that may or may not be useful:

Turn of 20th century (1900's) Muzsaly (Nagymuzsaly) was a village of 959, predominantly Hungarians. Tiszlat jaras/district (seat Beregszasz = Berehove)> Bereg megve/county > Kingdom of Hungary, Austro-Hungarian Empire. The village had its own Reform Parish. The filial GC and RC parishes were in Beregszasz. The Jewish kahal was in Bilke. Today it is called selo/village Muzhiyevo > Berehivskij raion/district > Zakarpatska oblast/region > Ukraine.

Mighthelp - Hannia - Hania
Hi Mighthelp,

There is now a reasonable body of work. About 15 films have been indexed. For a couple of films, names have been abstracted/transcribed. Documents so far reviewed tend to be written in Hungarian. The film collection is a mixture of documents:
-A lot of birth, death marriage records for areas covered by the former Munkacs diocese (Maramaros, Ung, Bereg, Zemplen, Szatmar, Szabolcs counties) but of course not a full collection (the complete sets will be in either the Berehovo archives or the Romanian Maramures archives).
-marriage records between people of differrent faiths
-correspondence regarding legality of births out of wedlock, registrations of overseas births etc (a few birth, marriage & death extracts are included
-correspondence regarding marriages between kin (second or third cousins). This material contains family tree diagrams.
-Religious census documents (not very useful for family research)
-civil registry applications to marry in the Nagy MMuszaly/Bene district. these are not marriage records per se, but the applications contain a lot of useful information.

I am halfway through setting up a website so that the material can be shared more widely. I will post a message once it is up and running.

My mother was Irene Romanko Yesenosky, daughter of Michael and Barbara Romanko (nee Gelesh). My great-grandmothers were both named Lohin. The village of Chudliovo is very small, so the same last names are frequent. I visited in 1998 and the languages were the local dialect, Russian and to a lesser degee, Ukrainian. Since the village has been under so many countries' administration, the local dialect is preferred, especially by the older people. We had relatives named Ozimok and actually have a painting of an old village house done by one of the Ozimok family.

Your reference to "village Nyzhne Solotvyno (Lower Sweet Wine)" sparked my interest. I have been searching for any vineyards in this area. My grandmother said she used to love to go visit her paternal grandparents "up" at the vineyard. She said her grandfather was a caretaker of a big vineyard there. Her father's name was Gygory Hercsok b. Solotvyno 1876. My grandmother was 9 was she emigrated to the US in 1910. So it would have been a vineyard that was still around in the early 1900s. I've read all the stories about how the vineyards were destroyed. But wonder if there are any sources to find those that did exist during that time period (close enough for them to travel to)from Lehocz (the village next to Solotvyno)to a vineyard in that area. She said he had many people working for him. So wondered if census records would maybe show people working at a vineyard in that area during that time period.

These are the family members that I know of who lived in or near the village of Horbky. Fedor Major died in 1981 and had two daughter, Ann and Elizabeth. Stephen died in 1970 and had two sons and two daughters. Peter Bidzilya was born in 1917 and his son is Yury who lived in Keiv. I have no birth or death date for Ivan Major but I know that he had three sons and four daughters.
This addition information might help to find our missing relatives.

Hi Jonhar915, you mean beginning of 19th century and that's why only place where records about this family may be kept is state archive of Transcarpathia.

Hluboke is refered to Nyzhne Solotvyno, it seems records are available from very beginning of 19th century, but it needs to be specified. Let me know if you need more information.

My great-great grandmother was Maria(Vojak) Paduch. She was born circa 1820s and probably lived in or near Hluboka (or Melyut), near Uzhorod, in Zakarpatska. Her son Steven married Anna Garai; their daughter, Barbara (my grandmother) married George Babyak and immigrated to the Johnstown, PA area. Vojaks also married Babyak cousins after WWI and immigrated to the US. Does anyone have information on this line?

Hello saijohn, village Velyki Komiaty is currently in Vynogradovo region of Transcarpathia.

Most likely information about your family is still kept in state archives and most likely, there is complete info for Velyki Komiaty starting from 1895 which is common for former Austro-Hungarian villages.

If you specified your inquiry, chances to give more definite answer would grow.

Hi!
Unfortunately, I have no more information about surname Luto.
As I understood it, in this surname the letter “L” is soft. In Polish, letter “Ł” is firm letter, and letter “L” is soft one.
And so, in Russian, your surname is written as “Люто / Lyuto”.
I found on the Russian website information about some woman from Krasnoyarsk. She writes: “My relatives live in the Krasnoyarsk Region. I live in the city of Krasnoyarsk. I've got Polish and Belarusian roots. Perhaps my surname is western one. Write.”
Here's link: http://www.analizfamilii.ru/familiya/Lyuto/
Regards, Sergey.

I live in the USA, but my fathers family is from north eastern Poland. The last name is Luto. I am struggling to find ancestors, which leads me to think that perhaps the name was changed or shortened. They live about 500 yards from the Lithuanian border.

Can you give me any leads or help in discovering where they might have come from? The family there currently says they were always Polish.

Thanks

The Romanian Maramaros district archives holds a lot of parish records from the Zakarpattia district.

Open the link below and scroll down til you get to 'inventare on-line', then open links containing the word 'matricole'. If you go to the end of each pdf document there is an alphabetic listing of the towns for which they hold parish records

http://www.arhivelenationale.ro/index.php?lan=0&jud=102

Unfortunately to my knowedge FHL has not yet filmed any of these records. You would need to hire a Romanian researcher to gain access to these archives.

yes, it seems more logical, parish records were probably keeping by the registry offices as to can writing an act of civil status can acts with help parish sources already maybe in begin of civil registration.

in my country all acts of the period before the civil status are the property of the state, after they belongs to church.
Even at the beginning of Vital record, churches were forbidden to keep records some have continued, which helps fill the holes (2 to 6 years maximun, sometimes nothing holes)
anyway, this post may be useful to researchers easiest, and contact the archives of Satu Mare and ask them what they have.

probably in old time, the local church should request a copy of baptismal certificate to their diocese for making a wedding , which in the case of Khust should be in Romania, and there would remain today.
so that the records of a village were not kept in the same village, but in a religious center.
Besides, I wonder if my baptismal certificate remains in the church of my village, it must be at the center of the diocese, I do not know how the priests doing even today.

Hello David, you’re completely right, this is what I try to explain here. I can only confirm Baia Mare archives are authentic. It’s what appeared to be on territory of Romania in 1918 and stays there now. They have records for some border regions, mostly Khust and around.

Soviet Ukraine took away all Greek-Catholic records, however Catholic parishes may have something. They hide information, it’s not public.

About Satu Mare, Chaushesku regime was much more severe then Soviet Union, it’s hard to believe for me local Catholics could save something from requisition and transfer to National Archives.

In my first message I stated if something was on territory of Ukraine in 1944, it is still here. For example Orthodox and Greek-Catholic Churches have a lot of priceless icons and ancient art objects in own property but they can’t move it through the border because it’s culture and historic heritage. If object has culture or historic value, it can be moved through the border without extremely complicated procedure of state agreements. Of course no one would ever endorse transportation of old demographic records.

In other words, you can buy ancient icon here but if you’ll try to move it through the border, it will be confiscated.

And finally, yesterday I called to media office of Mukachevo diocese. It’s seems they were very surprised by my question. So here’s their message briefly. They deny they’ve sent own archives to Romania. They don’t deny some records may be in Romania. Point.
