They were Roman Catholics.

Yes we have found them & thier EWZ50 numbers through the Odessa site ta. To follow these through we need to apply to USA at a cost.

Kind Regards

Karen

What religion did they practice? The database at https://sggee.org/research/PublicDatabases.html (first section) shows several dozen German Lutheran Kaminski familes in the Zhitomir region. Kaminski = Steinke in German. There is also one Sadowski entry.

Sadowski is known as a Polish variant of either Zado or Schade Germanic surnames. It was used by Germans according to Parish records from Russian Poland.

If these people were German, it could explain their forcible return to German territory. You can find these names in EWZ records (Nazi records detailing the people who were brought back to Germany). One source is http://www.odessa3.org/search.html (use the first search box and set the search for "War Records"). Another source is http://galiziengermandescendants.org/ (on the left, click on "Researching our Galizien Germans", and then on "1939 Resettlement Records" and then choose which search to follow.

Lachera does not sound Germanic to me but it does appear in only one of the EWZ records mentioned above.

Jerry
Thank you

That's fantastic!! Yes it does seem like it could be spelt that way. Its the closest to it found. Bless you. Thank you.

It has given me another thought. From the ITS was sent a family tree with symbols squares with circles in & triangles with numbers. Next to it my Great Grandmother has wrote a list of names with what I thought were surnames (married names) but they could actually be where they lived. I will scan this in & post for you to see. On one of the maps I saw Tomaskowka, something ??? The same as one of the names after Rosa she has written.

Karen

They had 3 children - Sarah, Gittel and Chave.
- Joseph Stadlin (born 1875 in Zhitomer) and his wife Sarah Shanuk Stadlin (born 1878 in Russia), immigrated to the US in 1904.

I don't know the names of Joseph Stadlin's parents or siblings. Maybe they were related to your Stadlens. WHat information do you have on them?

Jed

Hi

I dont know if we are distantly related. We are trying to piece together names within our family. We have just found a new surname for us of a Great Great Grandmother & Grandfather. Kaminski & Sadowska.

My Father has just recieved this information from the International Tracing Service.

Amongst all the information sent were details of an interview my Great Grandmother, Helene Lachera nee Kaminska, had with officals.
She had written down alot of names against a family tree. Which is quite confussing.
A Veronika, Rosa, Elisabeth, Karoline and Wladyslawa.
All surnames (probably married surnames as all girls) we are still trying to work these out.

Anyway, more importantly Her Fathers name was
Pawel Kaminski her mothers name Marie Sadowska. I wonder if we are distantly related??.

My Great Great Aunt Karoline always spoke about thier father being high up, at Officer status. With Naval links. How true this is we shall never know.

Helene Kaminska was married to Antoni Lachera.
It states she was born in Zytomierz, Russia 25.12.1896/97.
Last known domicile: Tolbowka Krostoszow, Zytomierz.
Around 1941 Antoni was shot by the Nazis.
On the 29th November 1942 she & a few remaining children, my Grandmother included and my Great Great Aunt Karoline were forcibly transported for work to Germany.

I hope you can maybe shed some light on this.

Kind Regards

Karen & Father Josef Lachera

Then served in Black Sea Navi of White Army against
Bolsheviks (communists) army. After he had to emigrate with his battleship
to Bizerta and then to Marsell (France).
My grandfather came from Berdichev in 1906 or 1907. His family went there from Zyrardow, Poland-perhaps in the 1880's. We suspect they were originally from SE Germany and went by the name Steinheimer. Just getting started with this - HELP!

Birdoff Family

Hello!

My name is Ariel Birdoff. I can trace the Birdoff family back to "Russia" in the 1800's with Benjamin Birdoff. I was told that perhaps our name was changed to Birdoff because we actually came from Berdichev in Zhytomyrska. It's also been suggested that our surname could have been Berdichevsky or Berdichevskya or something of the sort. If anyone knows of someone who would know more of where the name Birdoff came from or know of anyone who had a son named Benjamin, that would be VERY helpful!

Thank you!!

Bella Kamenier and her son Jacob emigrated to the US sometime between 1900 and 1906. Her husband Arron was apparently killed before their eyes by the army. They lived in Zhytomr. Her maiden name was Sinofaky and her father was Morris, also from Zhytomer. Do you have any information about this family? They are my grandaughters gg and ggg grandparents.

Hello,

There are still about 50 people with Shanuk (Шанюк) surname living in Zhytomyr.
I do not see any Stadlin.
Did any of the family stay in Ukraine?

Were they born in Zhytomyr or just lived there from 1870s to 1905? There are metric books on Zhytomyr Churches in Zhytomyr State Archives but I would need to know the details to be able to tell more. Do you know any dates? Birth/marriage/death?

Also, there must be census lists since 1897 there as well.

Regards,
Andriy

I guess, you may ask for this info at Zhitomyr State Archive arhiv_zt@ukrpost.ua. Have you ever tried it? As far as I know, there is an info on its site that they have alphabetical index to Rabbinate register books of Volynia province Governmental funds (8170 records), but time period covered is not mentioned.

There were a few Kooperman families, most of them related to one another somehow, in Ukraine, including my family's branch in Yarun. I'm not aware of any immediate relatives that went to New York, but it is certainly possible.

He went to New York and it appears he went to someone on the lower easrt side, NYC, named Kooperman. Surname spellings are ofter in correctly spelled, but I thought I would contact you in case there is a sall link.

Re: EWZ50 files.. We have opened up 2 more links to our family

Zhytomyia is almost certainly the city, district, and parish of Zhitomir. I have found no Taubuwka in that region. There is a Dabowka further west in the Roszyszce district. "Near" is a relative term so you may want to consider it but use with caution. Another place, Dubowaya, is closer but seems less likely by pronunciation.

For a good explanation of contents and use of EWZ records, go to http://www.volhynia.com/ and browse down the right hand column where you will find 4 references to it. These files can include good detailed info including even pics of ancestors but as with many other kinds of records, some have minimal help.

A good place to search for Germans from Volhynia is http://www.sggee.org and you can find extracted parish records for them at http://www.sggee.org/research/StPeteBirth.html The bad news is that most Lutheran records currently stop around 1885 so your 1898 era will be difficult to search. If the family was Baptist, you will find virtually nothing for them. There are records in Zhitomir Archives which are currently being extracted and purchased by SGGEE but it will probably be at least a year before they can be made available.

Jerry Frank
Calgary, AB

Hi

We have recently had information from the "International Tracing Service" of one of my Fathers Uncles who was not seen since being taken from the families village of "Taubuwka" near Zhytomyia in 1941. From this we have confirmation of my Fathers Grandmothers name "Helene Hammerschmidt". We then found on "The Black Sea German Research" site her name/DOB 25/12/1898 & village details again along with all her childrens. This site had lists of people who had Germanic ancestory but were living in the Ukraine/Russia. They were listed with this EWZ50 code & a set of numbers.
Why did they have these codes listed against their details?
Is it true these files hold a vast amount of information about your family??
Is it hard to get hold of a copy??

I am chuffed that we finally have our Grandmothers full DOB along with her brothers. It listed under the same Village two more families with the women having the LAHERA surname. Added to our family is now the surname TALAROWSKI & DEMUTH.

I have done a Dobroskay (Dobrovolskay) family photo book, but never found a pic of Peter and had a hard time finding one of Marie. I show the date of death in 1963 for Peter but am not sure where I have that information now. Thank you Olga for fulfilling the dreams of many of the senior relatives to now know and understand what happened to many of their ancestors who remained in Russia. Your red slippers are a reminder of your wonderful visit to our homes. They will remain a constant reminder of your times here in Canada.

oxoxoxo Neil

Hello- My grandmother, Pauline Katz was from Chudnov although her maiden name was Feinstein. Her husband was Morris Katz. Her brother, Milton Katz and his wife Yetta , both now deceased lived in Phoenix and had a son David, who is also deceased. David had a daughter, Michelle who still lives in Phoenix. Any of these names ring a bell?

At the Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY on Long Island, there is an area of graves originally maintained by the Chudnov Benevolent Society..
As usual, you are amazing. Unfortunately, I STILL cannot find my uncle or any "Polak" in Ukraine for that matter!!!! I might include him in with the rest of the people I'm asking the Red Cross Holocaust Tracing Program to find. No one has ever researched my family or any extension of it before, so I have literally nothing to go off of. Anyways, thank you very much =) That surname navigator will help with the Red Cross forms.
Hello there,

I am looking for a great-great-great uncle of mine (or anyone with this surname) named Riven Polak. He was born in Khodorkov/Khodorkiv/Chodorkov/Chodorkiv probably around the 1880s or so. He may have had a sister named Gitel as well. He was murdered in Winter 1941 when the Nazis took him to a mass grave and shot him. I also know virtually nothing about this town. I've done some searching around, and have come up with nothing. If anyone knows anything at all, I would appreciate your help. Thank you =)

Hi Kate..

Thank you for your reply. Yes my father & I have done much searching. For years we just thought it was only him left. Since finding my Great Uncle Mietek he has given us lots of information. Where they came from, their journey but unfortunately as he was only 10 years of age when transported away from his home he cannot remember names of Uncles or Aunties or Grandads or Grandmothers or even cousins.
My partners brother married a Russian lady who part lives and has a business in St Petersburg she speaks Ukranian and knows many friends there. She is going to try and find out for me confirmation of my Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother their brothers and sisters. Surely this is possible? ? I know that Petro was born in 1880 and Albina 1889. My Great, Great Aunt was born in 1900 so surely the records for 1800-1900 are available? ? I know the 1930-1940 are not but Im not really looking for those.
Kind Regards

Karen

Hi!
Thank you so much for the story. I also read your other thread here where you tried to get confirmation as for the village of Holubivka. I can also confirm that Holubivka being former Taubivka is located not in Ruzhynskyi raion, but it belongs to Kropyvnia, Korostyshivskyi raion, Zhytomyrska oblast.
Probably that's all I could help.
Just one thing - there is a source like Facebook in Russia (it is also used by all former Soviet republiks), it's called Odnoklassniki ("classmates"). There you can search for Yanishevskiy/Yanishevska and even find someone from your far relatives. Take in account, this source is in Russian and needs registration. I had several successful attempts and can confirm - it works (not as a rule, but as a chance).
As for official documents (metrical) - it's not so easy. Some of them are in Zhitomir archive but not all - thousands of them were destroyed during the WWII, some of them are still not accessible for the people (now one can get birth records incl. 1936 year), many of them, dated by the century beginning, are just missing. One needs to undertake a request to the archive to see what is available there.

BR,
Kate.

Hi..

Thank you so much for your reply and correction of surname. This is quite a long story. It has only been a few weeks since I was given this surname. We hope that it relates back to my Great Grandmother. Her name was Helaina/Helena. Her Married name was Lachera. She had 4 Children. One of them being my Grandmother. They had a Farm in what was in 1926-1940 a village called "Taubivka". Very near to what is now Holubivka. The whole village was burned down by the Germans and the villagers were put on a train for Germany to be used as Forced Labour. My Great Grandmother, My Grandmother, 2 Great Uncles and a lady we thought was our Great, Great Aunt Karolina. We are not sure now.
Anyway, I have been searching for relatives with the Lachera/Lahera surname and have found some still living in the area. My family may be connected to them via their Great, Great, Great Grandfather who may have been my Great Grandfathers brother his name was Anton. My contact has said that their wives Albina and Helina/Helena were also sisters and their family/maiden name Yanishevska. I would like to confirm this with records but very much hope it is true.
I am looking for confirmation of this link. Any other family memebers that we can conect or link up with.

Hi! I am also not "the wiser", I just saw the surname and recognized it was wrongly written. Probably that's because I'm native Russian-Ukrainian speaker, so the mistakes are evident to me.

I has been living in Zhitomirska oblast for many years (it's my homeland) and I heard Yanishevskiy/Yanishevska surname. But to search (are you searching a person or just any relatives?) it is needed at least two of three parameters: name, time and place. Whom are you looking for? Why are you looking him/them in connection with Zhytomyr (and Zhytomyr region)? Please believe me, this is not just questions.

Hi.. Yes I am sure this is the right village that must have been an old post. I have contacted Andrej just waiting for a reply. I dont think Mietek will remember if past generations came from central Ukraine as he was only 10 years of age when Hitler came in. I will definately ask dad to ask him though, you never know!. We had a phone call from the Ukraine last night from a Olia whos great grandmother was called Mykalina Lachera. It was quite difficult communicating but we eventually managed via facebook!! We need to look back into Anton Lachera's family. Find out how many brothers & sisters he had then maybe we can link others. Mietek definately doesnt remember. Kind regards H

I see as per your post in another forum that you are still in doubt whether this is the right place.

Karen, this is the right place.

I would suggest that you contact Andrij, as he has access to Zhytomir Archives. Although I was told by Village Secretary where the filial RC Parish was located, Andrij will have to check that out. His rates are very fair.

One of the problems might be that the family originated in Podolya, before the early thirties, when Stalin herded most Poles in Central Ukraine into the Zhytomir area. You might want to ask Great Uncle if he knows for sure that the family had resided in this region for more than a few generations.

My father Zygmunt Pracki was a lifelong friend of Bronislaw Plam. I was a flower girl at the wedding of Bronek and Eileen in England. I know he visited your family in the late 1960s in Caracas. If you are interested in making contact my email is aco9780@bigpond.net.au
