I was born in the old Yugoslavia and my father Milos Grbic was born in Gornje Vrhovine which means upper Vrhovine in Lika near the famous Plitvice Waterfalls. There are many Grbics from this area and there is a village called Grbici or "the grbics" My great grandfather was Milivoje Grbic from the same area and my grandmother comes from the Koncars also from the same region. if you want more information, you can email me at mike_grbic@yamaha-motor.com. Thank you for your help but I'm not aware of whether he was Catholic or Eastern Orthodox. I've asked other members of my family that might know more about that. I will let you know as soon as I find out.

Vaso sounds Serb to me but it is still something to be researched.

Important: he was Catholic or Eastern Orthodox?

Searching for records on biological Great Grandfather

My Great Grandfather was born in Yugoslavia as it was in 1899, or so I'm told. His birth date was August 15th. His name as he has written is Brunovasa Papovich but he called himself Vaso. I'm not sure if it's a Croatian name because I don't know what region of Yugoslavia he was born in. I'm searching them all and hoping that someone will have some information that will help me.

My Aunt has pictures of him and letters from him to my Great Grandmother and will be sharing them with me. That won't help me right now because I can't find records of him anywhere. There are some names that have come close but I can't be sure that they are him.

We know that he was in the United States from 1924 to 1927 but we're not sure when he actually got here or how. I'm concerned that I'm searching and will turn up nothing if his name would have changed, been misspelled or shortened. My thought is to find a record of him before he came to the United States because I feel that name would be more accurate. I believe he was still in Yugoslavia during WWI as he stated he wanted to be a Doctor but the war changed that.

Can someone please help me at least find a way to locate birth, baptism or marriage records?

Jan, I have got a family tree of Petkovic's from Drvar/Busije and if you are still looking for the information get in touch.
From my list I can immediately see that your Grandmother was one of 12 children. Her father Stanko had 2 brothers and sister. My records for your Gran say that she has had 2 children (Bogdan and Milka).

the name Pelachi don`t sound to have czech orgin.
also there is a similar istro-romanian-name like Petazzi.

The surname PELACHI: PE (e like pet) LA (a like tall or possibly like cat) CH ( sounds like ch in cheese or possibly like zh like si in vision) the I ( like e in eat). This was my great-grandfather's name. He was from Montenegro but may actually have been of a Czech ethnic origin. Pelachi is a phonetic spelling as it would sound to a Spanish speaker and then to an English speaker. Today it is spelled PELACHE and sounds like the earlier PELACHI.

Actually Croatia is a very old country and what is now the territory of The Republic of Croatia has been part of Croatia since before 925 AD. It will help understanding a bit about the history of the area. In 1925 AD King Tomislav united the Croatian territories forming the Kingdom of Croatia, around 1080 the last ethnic king passed leaving no heir. Around that time Croatian nobility elected the King of Hungary as King of Croatia. In 1523 the Croato-Hungarian Army was defeated by the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Mohacs. Much of Croatia and Hungary would remain under Turkish occupation until c. 1700s when Austria liberated those lands. The Kingdom of Croatia from that time on would be under the rule of Austria and later Austria Hungary. From 1918-1929 Croatia was under the rule of The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and from 1929 to 1991 would be under the rule of Yugoslavia... gaining independence in 1991. It is important for your search otherwise your search is too broad.

As Roko mentioned Cepin is located in the Slavonia region of Croatia.... NOT the country of Slovenia.

This is an area that Austria brought Germans to resettle after the Turks were routed. They are known as Danube-Schwabians.

I have an "Amelia Ponich" in my tree...she was my great grandmother. She is listed as being from "Yugoslavia" however, it wasn't called Yugoslavia at the time (according to some stuff I read). My dad says she comes from what we now call The Czech Republic. I know nothing about her family unfortuantely becse my mom & dad divorced and she kept me from all of his side of the family.

Čepin is a town in Slavonia (with an A) eastern Croatian province (while Slovenia with an O is a separate country)

No Tepper is listed in Croatia today. If they were ethnic Germans they most probably have left the region after WWII.

Still you need to do some more research to be sure this is the right Čepin.

I'm aware that, with all the changes we've been through, local geography can be quite confusing.

Sorry for ther delay. Did not know anyone had replied. I believe you are right about it being Sentozbolt. Found a picture when my great aunt went back to visit family there. Picture shows a sign saying "Prvine 1 3/4 km" and "Brslenovica 1 km" These are that distance from Sentozbolt.
