New Info

I spoke to few people in Boksmaya over the week-end and found out few amazing stories about the Brahim family who migrated to the US.
Their old house still exists in the middle of the village. The Spiridon family who currently live in it has bought the little old house from Yousef Brahim when he went from the US to Lebanon for a visit many years ago. They have built since over the old house, a second floor, but the old house is still in its original shape!!! I spoke to their son George, who lives in Australia and happens to be my childwood friend. He confirmed to me that his father Elias Spiridon who passed away at the age of 86 last year, had told him that he bought the Brahim house when he was a young man!!
I was told there was another Brahim house that belonged to the brother nearby, but it was destroyed over the years because of neglect and someone bought it to use its old stones to built his house. He too has passed away during the 70's war in Lebanon.
I have also requested for you a family tree from a cousin of mine, a historian in Boxmaya who works closely w/ the Saint John Maron Catholic Maronite monastery nearby that has a rich library full of very old documents and baptism certificates...
There are also a couple other families Khoury/Coury and Fares who migrated from Boksmaya in the early 1900's and settled in Kansas as well. Their grand kids still visit their homeland every few years. Do you know of them?
Stay tuned.

Looking for the origin, tribe and branches of the Hamam/Hamama Family Name.
My grandfather, Hanna Hamam was born in Akka, Palestine on April 9, 1878. I am aware that Akka was part of Greater Syria at this time and under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. I also am aware that the name means pigeon or dove.

It is believed that Hanna Hamam's father was born in Egypt. Could anyone tell me please if the Hamam/Hamama family name has any origins in Egypt? I am trying to identify the tribe and/or branches for the Hamam/Hamama family name.

Through considerable research by telephone, email and mail correspondence in Akka and Lebanon, I find that the Hamam/Hamama name is not a common name in these localities. I have been told that the Sayegh and Ablah names are branches of the Hamam/Hamama name. I have nothing to document this information.

I would be very happy to hear from anyone having these family names and anyone who might have information regarding the roots, tribe and branches of this family name.
Thank You!
Joyce Hamam

I have been informed by a reputable source that there is a Hamam/Hammam member in Jordan researching the Greek Orthodox and/or Greek Catholic line of the Hamam/Hammam family name. Does anyone know how to contact him? Any information on the Hamam/Hammam name will be greatly appreciated. My Grandfather was Hanna Hamam and his parents were Kalil and Eva Hamam. I would also like to ask if anyone knows the arabic translation for the name, Eva?
Thank You!
According to my Grandfather he was born in 1894 in Tehran,Iraq, and he came to the US in 1913. He changed his name to Davis when he joined the US Army (abt 1915) and served with Pershing in the Mexican Punitive Action.

He is listed in the 1920 and 30 US censuses as being from Iraq,Turkey, and his native language as Syrian.

My mom and my aunt agree that his given name(s) were Saleem Daoud(Dahoud ?),but disagree on the surname being either Al-sayegh,Al-Sayigh(my mom) or Sawyer(my aunt). Both say that they pronounced it as small children like "sugar" with a K thrown in.( they were born in 1919 and 1922,a few years after he had changed it)

They also agree that his father's given name was Soloman Dauod.

They also disagree on what religion the family was .

My mom says that they practiced as Greek Orthodox, but in reality were Jewish, my aunt says not. However my gg-uncle (my grandfather's mother's brother)who died in his 90's when I was about 25, always refered to himself as "an old Jew"

So, your guess is as good as mine as to who is correct there.

Any help out there to figure out this tangled family history is very appreciated!

kevork, kevorkian, keywork searches

Searching for family history, names, dates etc. for my family. My current surname is Keywork, however family history of unknown accuracy says this name was changed from Kevork, which may have been changed from Kevorkian. Family history, again of unknown accuracy, begins in Armenia. My great grandparents were driven out of Armenia to Syria at an unknown time. My grandfather (George) left Syria, possibly from Aleppo, around 1912, he was born around 1896. We have been in contact with a sister of his, Zaheda (spelling may be incorrect) Kevork. She was born after he left Syria (he did not even know she existed until the very early 1980's!). We know she resides in Venezuela (Caracas?). George arrived in New York City, via Ellis Island. He married Sarah (Saraia?) Yateem. I am trying to obtain ANY information in the hopes of expanding our family tree.
Thank You!

SAAD Family Name

Tracing your roots to this Country is not easy. For instance, my great grandfather is Youseff SAAD...his three sons Kaleem, Saleem and Ameen all carried his FIRST name as their MIDDLE name. When they arrived in the USA (Ellis Island log onto www.ellisisland.org to search for your grandparents arrival on ships)...the INS listed them as JOSEPH (since Youseff means Joseph in Arabic), losing the name SAAD. I traced my grandfather through Social Security records under the freedon of information request, and death records here in Minnesota where he died...to see who they listed as their Parents, i.e., the Maiden names of their wifes and mothers. Eventually you begin to piece it together. The SHIP Manifest records reveal the Village they came from. If anyone knows of the SAAD families in Lebanon (Bouhaire/Toulla Al-Jebbeh) area..I would be most interested in hearing from you. Many thanks...Larry Josephs

Benjamin and Abraham Shalitta (brothers) later brought their wives and children to the U.S. - Benjamin was in the Persian carpet business. Benjamin's oldest son Joseph (a.k.a. Jose Shalita) was in the entertainment business as a dancer and vaudevilian entertainer.

The Pearahs and Shalittas were Assyrian Christians and very involved with the Assyrian culture in Philadelphia.

I am very excited about tracing my family's roots and gratefully accept any help or information you can provide.

Turkmenistan - EVDOKIMOV / METAEV

Seeking birth or baptism record of Maria Andrevna EVDOKIMOV, born circa 1895-1907 in Ashkhabad, Persia (now Turkmenistan) to Andrei & Anna (METAEV) EVDOKIMOV. Most likely Russian Orthodox. She assumed the identity of a deceased woman while living in Shanghai in the mid 1920's. She married there in 1927 to a sailor named Howard POST. Her citizenship papers were granted 5 May 1932 in South Bend, St. Joseph, Indiana under the name of Stanislava POST. She went by the name Marie PARMETER after 1934, common law wife of Lyle O. PARMETER. Any suggestions on how to obtain birth information would be greatly appreciated.
