Yes, I saw that post and I am wondering if any of the records were saved from that church. Probably not because of the friction between the Turks and the Greeks.

If your sister finds that letter send me a copy and I will try to translate it for you. I don't know much Greek but it would be fun to transliterate it letter by letter.

Have you done any y-DNA testing? My tests were done first with Genebase and then FTDNA. I recommend FTDNA although the results of that study I posted before were from Genebase.

The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality released a statement saying that the restoration of the historical Ayavukla Church, which was launched in 2008, was nearly completed.

"The church will be used as a social and cultural center after the renovation," the statement said.

With the restoration, the Jesus Christ figure, which had been painted over, as well as frescoes depicting St. John and angels Michael and Gabriel, has been renewed.

The Ayavukla Church is in the Basmane neighborhood and was constructed by the Greek Orthodox community in the second half of the 19th century.

It was the only Greek Orthodox church to survive the fire of 1922, a major event in İzmir's history.

The building served as a museum on orders from Ataturk in 1924. It was later used as an opera rehearsal hall.

I've pretty much given up on there being records for Greeks living in Smyrna. My grandfathers family were all killed by the Young Turks, land taken and so forth. Hopefully there will be survivors that fled and some day I'll get a connection. My grandfather emigrated to the US in 1915 along with his mother. He immigrated to Greece in the 1970's and died in Athens. Unfortunately I have no records of any family in Greece that he may have connected with if there ever were any, my understanding is that our Greek family always lived in Smyrna. We had a letter from him written in Greek that I'd hoped would give me some clues as to family but my sister has misplaced the letter for now.

I too am looking for Turkish or Greek records from Symrna/Izmir. The surname Pygmon which I suspect is the Greek spelling is found infrequently in Italy and France but written in Greek. Also the results of my y-DNA tests and comparisons with population studies of Smyrna and Phocaea Greece indicates an origin of my paternal ancestors.

Here is a synopsis of the results:

Matches at a Genetic Distance of 0:
Smyrna, Greece 3 45 6.67%

Matches at a Genetic Distance of 1:
Smyrna, Greece 11 45 24.44%
Phocaea, Greece 4 26 15.38%

Matches at a Genetic Distance of 2:
Phocaea, Greece 3 26 11.54%
Smyrna, Greece 1 45 2.22%

Matches at a Genetic Distance of 3:
Smyrna, Greece 2 45 4.44%
Phocaea, Greece 1 26 3.85%

Matches at a Genetic Distance of 4:
Smyrna, Greece 3 45 6.67%
Phocaea, Greece 1 26 3.85%

17 of the 45 samples from Smyrna show that I am related to them. Three of the ones in Smyrna are a perfect match.

Now if only I could find the B.M.D.records but they probably burned! If you find a way to look these up please let me know.

It could have to do with Rumeli And Rumelia that meant Greece because the Greeks are called the Romans in Turkey. My family came from Eskişehir and none of them spoke Greek, they all spoke Turkish so he could be called Rum -elia

Hi there, i have a relative Pennelope Mostrato born 1877 in Turkey. A Marika Douca born 1897 Istanbul and died in 1970 Durban South Africa. A Michalis Douca born 1895 Istanbul and Polyxeni Douca. Lebanon Turkey or Syria

I am travelling to Lebanon soon and hope to put my feet on the soil of my ancestors... Georgeous Hanna Mellick born 1863 in Bterram or Constantinople (according to his death certificate) and Nasta Jeha born 1865 Mt Lebanon.

I've been able to go a bit further back re the Mellick line but all I have for Nasta is that she was the daughter of Nicolas Jeha and Rebecca Anthony. Nicolas was listed as a policeman.

I am at a loss which part of Mt Lebanon and the Jeha and Anthony family line.... Or even if it is accurate.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Were birth records for greeks living in Smyrna destroyed in the fire that leveled the Greek section of the city? I'm trying to find information on Demitrios Fotiadis or Fotiades born September 23, 1889 Smyrna, Ismir, Turkey mother's first name Eleni maiden name unknown. Demitrios emigrated to US before 1917 rest of his family remained through the unfortunate events of 1920 war. Eleni and another son Ernie (american name) came to US after the destruction of Smyrna. Demitrios immigrated to Greece in 1960's from the US and died in athens, Attiki, Greece April, 10, 1970. Any help appreciated.

In the surnames index there, if you search for the surname FARHI (which I assume is the name you are researching), you will see "Farhi families of Izmir (Smyrna)." I think you should search Turkish records, if possible.

My grandmother and grandfather is whom you were speaking with.
My nan left first and then my pop only a few months ago so in saying this i would love to continue on their quest of the family name.
I am also trying to find as much as i can about the family name for my dad who is still a Karadin, as showing him the research would give him a great surprise that my nan was in search for. My pop was hungarian so im curious to how the post you wrote could have translated into Karadin and unto how if how the name came from Turkey. Any info would be gladly appreciated.

I'm guessing you were speaking to my nan or pop whom have passed away. My nan left us first and only a few months ago my pop.
As my dad has the Karadin name i was wondering if you give me any more info on the decent of the Karadin name.

I'm in a similar fix trying to track down the birth records of my Grandfather who was born in Constantinople, to Jewish parents but I don't know how to look for such records. Its a desperate shame that no compilation of data such as in the UK and USA has been done as yet in Turkey.

My own Grandparent was born there in 1912 but I am clueless as to where to begin. Have you had any further development?

I am looking for info on a Gasmil Evason. His daughter Theodosia married Eli James in the British Consulate in Constantinople in 1896. Theodosia was 20 at the time. Eli James was in the British Navy and Theodosia was a governess at the time of the marriage. According to the marriage certificate, Theodosia's father Gasmil Evason was deceased at the time of the marriage and had been a watchmaker.

all i know is that my great grandmother Maria Aloglou was born in Turkey (Asian Minor) 1900 and married in Egypt. She pat away in 1943.

Smryna, now Izmir was controlled by both Turkey under the Ottoman rule as well as now, however it was also controlled by Greece at various times. There was a strong link to Salonica as well. I have many Sephardic families in my tree from that area. My current count is over 150,000 people. I would like to link your family with the ones I have. Please contact me.

I am interested to know whether anyone is aware of any researchers who are resident in Istanbul, and who offer research services in the Ottoman Archives of Istanbul?

I am trying to locate copies of records in the Nufus Defterleri for certain villages in Cyprus (for the purpose of creating a family tree), and corresponding census records for 1831, 1862, 1777, and 1841 etc/ and or cizye defterleri (capitation registers/poll tax)/ temettuat defterleri (profit tax registers) for those villages.

I would appreciate any assistance into this matter.

Please excuse my ignorance but is it possible to be a Turkish National, born in Turkey, lived there all your life but not know your real DOB but able to obtain a Passport on a guessed DOB?

The person in question is only 24... Give or take 4 years!

Hi All,

Attached are the names of 2 cities that I need halep identifying.

The first is a town/city in Turkey in which my Armenian ancestory was born circa 1875. Maybe Omasia, Turkey?

The second is a town/city in Armenia in in which my Armenian ancestory was born circa 1895. Maybe Harrack, Armenia?

Any ideas?
