I'm a Londoner (England) and I can only just remember my grandmother, but I know she was called Margaret and although she was a Prior by marriage she was always called Granny McPhee. What I do remember is lovely food packages and boxes of apples being sent to us Priors in war torn London, and I believe they were from the McPhees in Calgary. I'm building my family Tree, and would very much like to know if I have any relatives in or around Calgary. Please excuse the spelling of McPhee if I've got it wrong, there are so many options.

I am living in Scotland and interested in William Walker (married to Margaret Kerr) and his decendants who immigrated to Alberta at sometime between 1901 and 1914.

One of his sons, William Robert Walker was living at Willow Cottage, Cathedral Close, Edmonton according to his WWI attestation papers. He was married to Mabel and working as the clerk to the holy diocese. He was a chaplain through WWI and seems to have survived the war. but there my trail goes cold. Did he return to Edmonton after the war? Did he and Mabel have any children?

Any information/contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Graeme Walker

researching Robert Leonard BARKER family

hi everyone,

I am currently researching my paternal grandfather's grandfather, Robert Leonard BARKER, who was born in Ontario in 1861, but came to Calgary in 1883 and lived the rest of his years there. He married Barbara Ann Patterson, who was a Lieutenant in the Salvation Army, in 1886. THey had eight children - Donald William,(my grandfather's father), Mary,Robert Alexander, Leonard Atkinson, Ernest Gordon, Helen May, Barbara Alice and Jean.

I have found a lot of info on the family, including some neat newspaper articles of the men and their service in WW1 and RL Barker's service in the Riel Uprising. I have also been able to find info on the family in the 1901, 1906 and 1911 census. However, I'm also finding some inconsistencies, particularly in dates (what a surprise!).

For example, in all of the censuses, it has the kids listed with their birthyears - and it's fairly consistent bt census. However, I found the attestation papers for the boys for WW1 and it has their birth years listed differently. I'm not sure why there were different as even with the birth year I originally had from the census, they would have been old enough to join the war effort (so it's not like they had to stretch their age to be "of age"). In the 1911 census, it has the oldest boy as Robert Alexander, born in 1890, then Donald William (1892), Leonard Atkinson (1894) and then Ernest Gordon (1896). However, the attestation papers show Donald WIlliam being born in 1885, Leanard born in 1890, and Ernest born in 1894. Robert Alexander was in England serving at the time. The actual month and day are the same on both the census and attestation papers.

The other inconsistency and question I have is in relation to Robert Leonard's wife, Barbara Ann. In Robert Leonard's obituary in 1939, it says he was predeceased by his wife, Barbara in 1910. It also says this on a Alberta pioneer website (although I gather they get the info from obits as well). However, she was listed as alive and well, living in Calgary on the 1911 census! In addition, in one of the obits I found, it says she died in Vancouver, BC. I did a search on the BC archives and I did find her death - in 1913 in Vancouver. I guess it's possible that whoever wrote RL Barker's obit didn't know the exact year?! Also, why on earth would Barbara go to Vancouver? Was she sick and seeking treatment? Her last child, Jean, was born in 1908 (Calgary), and the death reg I found for her in Vacouver states her age was 48.

Thought I'd post the family I'm researching in hopes that someone else is also researching them...and to ask some rambling questions!

thanks for reading if you made it this far!

Sharon Moss (nee BARKER)
Victoria

I am looking for the child(ren) of Cameron and Hazel McDonald. They probably are both deceased by now. Cameron was born in Toronto and moved to the West where he met Hazel.

Though I have seen Cameron a few times the one and only time I saw Hazel and their daughter was in 1961 or 1962 when during a short visit they came to Port Perry, Ontario on Lake Scugog. All I remember is that Hazel I believe was part Italian and made fantastic spaghetti and meatballs.

I believe they were married in and may have lived in or near Calgary. Common names in the family if they did have more children for girls may have been Hazel after their mother or Mary, May, Ethel, Lilly, Annie and for boys, Russel, Cameron, Jack, John, Daniel, Peter and perhaps, Alford or Levi.

If anyone can help me find my family please email me at macnash@rogers.com

He was listed as surviving brother living in Canada on his sister's obituary in 1941. A neice remembers meeting him in Oregon when she was in the Army. She said he lived in Calgary, never married and boarded in someone's home. There was a Thomas Jr but cannot find any information on him either so maybe Thomas went by the nickname of Jack to differentiate between him and his father. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Larry Leroy Nelson, possibly Sawchuk

I'am DESPARATELY SEEKING a man by the name of Larry Leroy Nelson. He could possibly be Sawchuk as his biological fathers name was Edward Sawchuk. He was born on November 11, 1954 in the city of North Battleford, Saskatchewan to Madeline Nelson..now Flavel and to Edward. His mother and father were never married but were engaged at the time of his birth. Madeline fell in love with another man shortly after Larry's birth and Larry's father was devastated.
Edward consistently harrassed Madeline for custody of his son and each time she would refuse. Finally in a desparate attempt to get his son, he tried to kidnap little Larry from Madeline's back yard of her home, but his attempt failed as a neighbor saw him right away and called Madeline.
Madeline knew right then and there that things would not work out living in the same city, so her and her new boyfriend decided to move to the city of Calgary to get away from this man. Just before they moved, Edward showed up at Madeline's door and told her that one way or the other he was going to get his son.
Madeline, little Larry and Madeline's boyfriend moved to an area of Calgary called the Inglewood auto court right next to the Bow River. Things seemed to go quite well there until her boyfriend fell extremely ill with polio and became paralyzed. He could no longer care financially or physically for Madeline and her baby boy....this forced Madeline to take a job at the Modern Cafe in Calgary. This also meant that little Larry needed the care of a babysitter while his mother was at work..
Shortly after Madeline started work at the Cafe, she saw Edward walking down the street and panic set in. The on consolation she had was that he did not know where in the city they lived.
The babysitters that Madeline arranged for little Larry to go to lived right next door to them..Their names were Don and Jackie and they had three children of their own. They were a nice couple according to Madeline and she trusted them whole heartedly. At one point Madeline was told that there had been a strange man hanging around the playground there. Madeline immediately thought about Edward, but then as time went on, the thought faded.
On December 24,1957 Madeline was called to go to work that day. The regular babysitters could not babysit that day, but Jackie recommended her sister-in-law to Madeline and assured her that she was a good babysitter, and so Madeline wouldn't be stuck without one. This was the beginning of a never ending story, one that Madeline will never forget as long as she lives..
She was called home, to find that her baby boy went missing that day. It was said that the boy was down on the river with some other kids and that he fell through a hole in the ice. Problem was that little Larry was deathly scared of water and that Madeline even had a heck of a time getting this boy to have a bath. Some of the other children said that there was a strange man down by the river that day...
So the Calgary City Police dragged the river and they came up with nothing. The strange thing was, a year later, a boy of around the same age drowned in the same river and within a short time afterwards his body was recovered...but not Larry's..Why?
It has been 43 years now since he went missing. No body has ever been recovered. Larry Nelson just vanished without a trace. No death certificate has ever been issued, no records of any John Doe boy's of that age has ever been reported in the province of Alberta, there has just been nothing all together.
Larry would be 46 years old now. His mother firmly believes that he is still alive, but if she finds out otherwise, then she can put her mind at ease. She has never been able to have a funeral for her boy, she has never been able to tell anyone for sure what happened to her son, and she would really like to know one way or the other what happened. Her health is not all that great and she would like to know the truth about her son.
Larry had blonde hair, blue eyes and the tip of the middle finger on his left hand was missing.
If anyone has any information on this person, the babysitters or their children, or to what happened that dreadful day, please contact me A.S.A.P. at kandy@sk.sympatico.ca it is very important that I find out what happened. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I do hope that someone out there knows the truth.

I am looking for a Ruth (Stewart) maiden name. She would be in her 60's and last known area she lived in was Calgary. Our father is William Drury George Stewart born December 5, 1989 and died June 2, 1989. I am sure she has no idea I exist. If anyone knows her and would have her contact me it would be so appreciated. I know she has children, grandchildren and at least one great-grandchild. I have been searching for years for my father and want to validate that is indeed him.
SIncerely,
Heather Green (McCulloch)
hrhcgren@prodigy.net

Harold m. abt. 1919, poss. in Alberta, to Margaret "Mattie" THOMSEN b. Aug 1895, who bore him a son, John Milton ELFORD, b. 9 Apr 1922 in Philadelphia PA.

Mattie d. soon thereafter and Harold returned to Calgary, where the Herald records that he was involved in a traffic accident in 1922. Correspondence concerning his son indicates that Harold was living in or near the Imperial Hotel in early 1927 and that he had remarried, although his new wife's name is unknown. I have found no record of their whereabouts after 9 Mar 1927.

I would be grateful for any information on the residence of Harold M. ELFORD, the name of his second wife m. 1922-1927 (presumably in Calgary), the names of their children (if any), and the dates of their deaths.

I am compiling my BEST family tree. Charles Brian Best was born 1916 near Sydney, Australia. He went to Calgary in Canada and married a Genevieve unknown and had twin daughters, one named Susan Best and the other name not known who died very young. Charles left Canada and joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in 1938 as a Pilot Officer in 40 Squadron. He later became a Squadron Leader Pilot with the Distinguished Flying Cross, flying bombers in 515 Squadron. Charles was killed on a bombing raid over Germany on 16th Feb 1944. I am trying to locate details of his Wife including her maiden name etc and of the twin daughters.
Genevieve is believed to have lived for a few years in Australia during the 1970s and then returned to Canada.
Any info would be most welcome.
James Best
Australia

Mack Thomas/Jessie Thomas of USA die in Calgary?

I am looking for any information on my great Uncle McClelland "Mac" Thomas and his wife Sarah Jessie Robinson Thomas. Both born in the USA in 1864 and grew up in Pottawattamie County,Iowa where they married in 1894. Sometime in the mid to late 1920's it is family lore that they moved to Calgary,Alberta,Canada area where Mac either worked on or owned a wheat farm. The story is also that they had two children while there and both died at or near birth. Mac is alleged to have died in the area in 1937/1938 while Sarah, who was known by her maiden name of Jessie died in Calgary,/Alberta,Canada 1945/1946.
Can someone help me to find facts to go with these stories? Obituaries or anything of value in this quest would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello,
This is a longshot, but what have I got to lose? I am trying to find out if the Angus and Rose Macdonald at the address in the subject line (314-6th Street W.) are for sure the people I am related to. There were an Angus and Rose Macdonald at this address in the Voters' Lists of 1938 and 1943. Is there anyone who would know anything about this couple? Any tidbit of information or a point in the right direction would be very appreciated. I write from British Columbia and have no knowledge of the Calgary area or accessible resources. The early 1940's is when Angus and Rose lost contact with the family and nothing is known of them. Thanks.

Seeking info on family of William Francis (Frank) Watson & his wife Mildred Maud (nee Maynard) Watson. "Maud M. Watson" of Calgary signed an affidavit in Nov. 1961 in Calgary attesting to the birth of one of her daughters in Ontario. Mildred Maud herself would have been born in Ontario in 1882. Frank was born in Ontario in 1876. Some of their children's names were Frederick (B 1903), Beulah (B 1906) & Ruth (B 1909).
Wondering if there might be an OBIT or other information for either Mildred Maud or her husband Frank.
Need Surnames

I need surnames for "Uncle Heily" who died in his office in Calgary about mid-February 1917. His wife was Annie Hancock and they were probably married in Toronto. Daughters were Nelly and Sadie, both married by late 1916. The letter of March 17, 1917, announcing Heily's death came from Major William McSpadden (whose deceased wife was Mary Hancock), who wrote from the Imperial Hotel in Calgary. Sadie wrote from 240 18th Avenue West in Calgary on November 8, 1917. With this wealth of detail, no one passed down the surnames. Any help or suggestions where to look will be appreciated. Census indexes are tough without the surnames.
He moved 'out west' as a young man. My grandfather visited him in the early 1900's but the family has not heard from him since. My grandfather's name is John Herbert and he had younger brothers Harold and Charles. There are also three girls, Veronica, Gabrielle and Esther. I would love to hear from the western branch of the family. I have compiled a detailed family tree but have a total blank for Thomas.
