Adopted ginger curly haired baby girl BROWN Born 1930 +-2 years

Adopted ginger curly haired baby girl BROWN Born 1930 +-2 years (maybe?)

This little girl child was born from the union of Marian North BROWN born 24JAN14 & a ranchhand named Mc or MacLean (this name may be not correct) who came into The Hand Hills during the late 1920s or 1930s from the Verdun Valley area. The McLean family moved out of The Hand Hills area not having established any roots, either because of the dirty 30s with no work available OR perhaps on account of knowing of the pregnancy.

Marian, during her pregnancy, stayed with Mrs Susan MORRISON & her daughter Jean#2 in Delia until the baby was born. It was thought that the baby was born in the Hanna hospital however searches have not found Marian BROWN registered in the Hanna nor Drumheller hospitals. Marian may have gone to Calgary OR gave birth using a false first name if that were permitted back then?

It is unknown the date & year of birth of the baby girl but Jean#2 recalls that it was not winter (early Spring or Fall perhaps) as she was about 7 or 8 years of age at the time around 1932 & was playing with a friend outside. This could be 1932 +/- a couple of years.

Charlie MORRISON married Mabel BROWN in DEC 1935 & lived on the Hand Hills homestead so Mrs Susan MORRISON & her daughter Jean#2 would move into Delia to winter there since there wasn’t any room for them to live with the newlyweds. Mrs Susie MORRISON moved permanently to Delia to live in 1936, so this baby girl was born prior to 1936.

This woman would be the eldest blood grandchild of Minnie L. READ-BROWN & Hugh N. BROWN. Rumours have circulated that the father of this girl child was Mr Peacock but this has been said to be untrue.

The baby girl was said to have been born with red curly hair and no one in this Hand Hills BROWN Family has red hair.
He died around 1956, and is supposedly burried in Drumheller. I do not think that he had any family in Canada, since he left my grandma with three children back home, but then, maybe he did.He was a miner in the beginning, then got hurt, and ended up having a chicken farm. That is the total extend of my info. I believe that I am the first person in our family to try to get some info about him. I do appreciate any info! Thanks!
Daniela

Hi there,

I take a ton of digital images of tombstones and I recently stopped by the Richdale Cemetery and was baffled why there is only one actual tombstone located here. There are what appears to be other burial locations with some markers made from the posts that hold up highway signs. There is no text to indentify who may be buried under the markers. There also appears to be some that were just plain unmarked.

The lone tombstone belongs to Mary Mazar, born January 19, 1921 and died March 12, 1921.

There is a large portion of land dedicated to the cemetery off the highway with a rather large iron gate.

Just weird and nothing about it comes up at Ourroots.ca either

Died ?Nov 1925 we believe. Also anyone who might have access to the Drumheller Mail Newspaper for Nov 1925 who might have access to an obit for Johanna. I've looked at the issues online and Nov 1925 is not in the online addition. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Will gladly reimburse for pictures and obits.

New Alberta Homestead Index Now Searchable Online

All Norway Listers,

As many of you know, in 2005 the Alberta Genealogical Society produced a searchable online "all-name" index that includes the names of every person who is listed as having some interest in Alberta homestead lands that had been "proved up" and patented by 1930.

In 1930 the Canadian government turned the homesteading process over to the individual provinces. The Edmonton Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society has now produced a new searchable online "all-name" index that covers Alberta homesteads patented after 1930. This new index, as well as the earlier 1870-1930 index, can be found at http://abgensoc.ca/ .

It should be noted that although the new post-1930 index (which includes records for homesteading activities as early as 1900) already contains almost 45,000 names, there are many tens of thousands of more names to come as data continues to be transcribed and entered. So if you have someone who you think may have homesteaded in Alberta, and you have not yet found a homestead record for that person, you should check the new post-1930 index regularly.

In the late 1800's and early 1900's people from all over the world came to western Canada to take advantage of cheap, newly available farm land, commonly known as homesteads. For several years Library and Archives Canada (formerly National Archives of Canada) has published an searchable online index containing the names of the persons who were successful in "proving up" their western Canadian homesteads and obtaining final patent (ownership) for these lands. This index can be found at http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/020111_e.html .

However, for every person who ultimately obtained patent on homestead land there were many others who applied for homesteads but, for various reasons, did not receive patent. And there were many more who had some other interest in the same homestead lands, even though they themselves may not have even applied for the homestead. The two AGS indexes allow you to search for the names of these hundreds of thousands of other early Albertans.

The "Advanced Search" option will allow you to search not only by the "Exact Match" spelling of the name, but also by the very useful "Starts With", "Ends With", "Contains" and "Wild Card Search" search methods. Furthermore, you can search not only by the person's name but also by the legal land location or, in some cases, place name. The indexes include name listings for ranches, churches, schools, cemeteries, municipalities, societies, companies and other organizations that had an interest in homestead lands.

Copies of the microfilmed Alberta homestead files are held at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. For those who are able to search these files in person, the online homestead indexes will identify the microfilm reel and homestead file number where the name appears, thus saving considerable time and effort when trying to find the file. Or, if you wish, the Alberta Genealogical Society will obtain photocopies of homestead files for you and you can find out how to arrange for this at http://abgensoc.ca/ .

These two homestead indexes will provide genealogists and family historians with much valuable information regarding their early Alberta ancestors and relatives.

Gordon Berdahl
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
My grandfather (Philip Joseph Drumheller) was born on 6/8/1915 in Forkston, Columbia County, PA. He was the child Rose Violet Miller and Charles F. Drumheller. The two (Rose and Charles) were never married.

Rose was born in Forkston, Columbia County, PA on 7/15/1899 and died in Catawissa, Columbia County, PA on 5/8/1926.

All we know about Charles was that he died sometime around 1916 presumably in Catawissa, Columbia County, PA.

My grandfather was very sensitive about his past and never talked about it with anyone, including his children. He even went so far as to black out the names of his parents on his Birth Certificate and Baptismal papers.

Any help one could provide would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS !!

Jason Pieszala
jpieszala@yahoo.com

Anyone who may have had ancestors or other relatives in the Canadian prairies in 1901 now has access to a very powerful, user-friendly data source that has just come online. The Alberta Genealogical Society, Edmonton Branch, has just produced a free, easy to use, searchable online database of the 1901 Census for those areas of Canada that are now within the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Just go to http://www.agsedm.edmonton.ab.ca/ and click on 'Search the 1901 Census', and type in the information for the person you are looking for. Or click on the 'Advanced Search' tab to access a powerful search engine, which allows the use of 'exact', 'begins with', 'contains', 'ends with' and 'wild cards' in the search process.

The result of your search will be a transcription of census entries for all persons whose names fit your search parameters. Click on 'View Transcribed Page' for the name that you have chosen, in order to see a transcription of the whole census page on which that name appears, with the name highlighted. You can even page forward or back to see transcriptions of previous or following census pages. Or you can click on 'View Microfilm' to view an actual image of the selected transcribed census page.

Have fun searching this valuable new information source.
JAMES PLIVA worked in Drumheller mines

I am researching the history of my PLIVA family. My g-uncle James PLIVA was born Feb 1876 in Czechoslovakia. His occupation listed on his 1918 U.S.A. WWI registration card is a driver for Drumheller Coal. I found him listed on the 1931 Canadian Naturalization Records in Midlandvale, Alberta, along with his wife, Barbara PLIVA and Agnes PLIVA, minor child. Apparently he was still living in that area 1932 - 1935 when his children were born. A son, Robert Angus PLIVA, died in 1939. This is the last record I have of this family. Does anyone know how I can get further information from Canada (I live in the U.S)? I would appreciate any help with history of this family. Thank you.
norbob@brightok.net

Alex died in 1970 and according to the Drumheller Mail Index, Dorothy died 6 Sept 1989 . I have a copy of the obituary listed for the 6 May 1998 for her brother Ralph, but it doesn't make reference to the date of 6 Sept 1989, so I'm not sure if this is correct.

Does any one remember a story about finding 3 skeletal remains around the Hanna, Alberta area. Is there a place call Fish Creek near Hanna. Can some one tell me how to find info on this story. Was it in a newspaper. Were they moved. Any one know how old the remains were at that time.
I am asking because my great grandfather disappeared sometime in the late 1920's. Was told he might have been murdered. Also two other guys disappeared around the same time that he knew. They played in a band.
Would really like to know if he is one of the remains.
Please email at:
patross56@yahoo.ca

Dies From Exposure

From the Manitoba Free Press, Winnipeg, Tuesday, December 5, 1916, page 9, under DIES FROM EXPOSURE.

"C.N.R. CONDUCTOR FOUND ON PRAIRIE WITH FEET AND HANDS FROZEN.

Calgary, Alta., Dec. 4, - W. Norman Stanley, a Canadian Northern railway conductor, operating on the line running east from Calgary, Saturday morning died at Hanna under peculiar circumstances. He had come into the town the night previous and next morning was found lying on the prairie close to town with his feet and hands frozen, in an unconcious condition. He was hurried to shelter but died next morning. Mounted police held and inquest there and pronounced death due to exposure, but James Short, K.C., of Calgary who is a cousin of the deceased, has opened the case up again, under suspicion of foul play. A second inquest will be held Monday afternoon. Stanley was a Mason of high standing and a well-respected citizen of Calgary."

For information only. The poster is not realted to nor is researching any of the above.e

I am looking for any information about my greatgrandfather, Benjamin Smith. He was born in Washburn, Ontario and was married to Margaret Ann McCarey. He was a ship's captain on the great lakes, but after his wife died around 1901, he moved out west. He settled around Oyen, Alberta and took up farming. He died there on Mar. 5, 1917 and was transported back to Kingston, Ontario to be buried by family. Any information on his time in Alberta would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for anyone who knew the Smith family of Delia and Drumheller. Our family knew the father as Dewey Smith. They knew them when they lived in Delia and Drumheller. I have just recently received information from Missouri USA that this family may have See connections dating back to early Missouri USA. The family in the USA have the following information:Elizabeth or Delila Smith that
married a SEE. This is a daughter of Druey Smith
Anyone with Smith family research from this area we would appreciate hearing from you. Dewey Smith always claimed he was related to the See's, but until today, we had no idea how.
Sylvia See Claresholm, Alberta Canada sylviac@telusplanet.net
