B.I.C.A. in Edmonton ~1929. What does BICA stand for?

One of my ancestors, a Hubert South age 17, immigrated to Canada in April 1929 and landed at St. John, New Brunswick. Information on the passenger list stated he was going to Edmonton as a farm labourer and his sponser/employer was B.I.C.A. in Edmonton. Would anyone have information as to what B.I.C.A. stands for??

Thank you.
Murray Miles.

James Charles Chatterton Bremner and Edith Bremner

My husband is writing a history/family tree of his branch of the Bremner family.

His great grand uncle was James Charles Chatterton Bremner (known as Charlie) from Clover Bar but original family was from glasgow and prior to this was from Wick, (Charlie's wife was Edith Fielders from New Brunswick).

Charlie was a very colourful character in Edmonton and built the Bremner House, also the district of Bremner was named after him. I have obtained his death certificate from the Vital Records Office.

The reason for writing this thread is to try to obtain the information given on the gravestones of Charlie and Edith.
Of course his real name is James CC Bremner as given on the cemetery records.
I have located the cemetary and plots via the internet.

Cemetery is Edmonton. Section 0F block 0055 and plots are 0005 and 0006.

I had not realised that Edith was buried three days before Charlie can anyone confirm this for me? Also is there any information about the deaths (Charlie shot himself in his barn). This was such sad news to receive from the record of death. Any information to tie up the loose ends of his story would be useful. The buriels took place in 1928

Would really appreciate any help. I am in the UK, but plan to visit Edmonton for the opening of Bremner House in a couple of years time.

Sue Bremner

Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church - Swenson
In 1913 Sara Kristina Svensson (maiden name Nilsdotter), born 19 February 1867 in Ström parish, Jämtland, and her daughter Anna Maria Katarina, born 12 April 1911, left Sweden to join their husband and father Henrik Anton in Canada. He was born 28 July 1879 in Tåsjö parish, Ångermanland.

I thought the family settled down near Bonnyville because a Henry Anton Swanson bought land there in 1913 and 1915. Now I am not so sure anymore.

Today I received a copy from The Swedish Emigrant Institute of a page in Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church Member Records 1929-1951. According to this the Swenson family arrived in Edmonton 1919 from Duringewille, Alta. A place I can not find on the map. Since the church was founded in 1929 they must have been living in Edmonton for at least ten years. Unfortunately nothing was written under "Removed and Dismissed", "Died" or "Dropped".

I hope some reader of my query is familiar with the church and can help me find out what happened to the Swenson family. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maud

Seeking Mr &/or Mrs W.R. [Bill] Clark, and daughter Andrena or anyone who can help me contact them.

The Clark family was last known to be at: 1550 Marple St., Vancouver BC, 2 Nov. 1943 (from an entry in my father's photograph album, under *Memory Leaves*). Andrena would
have been about 4 years old then; born c1938-39. Bill Clark was also known to have been at 1621 Quadra St., Victoria sometime before Maple St. Home town recorded as Edmonton Alberta.

Bill Clark and my Dad (Bill/Billie WYATT) served together, during the war. Dad was on the west coast Triangle Run, for about 18 months (1941-43). Know he served aboard HMCS Prince David, but I'm not sure which other west coast ships and I believe Bill Clark was on the David, as well. My Dad then returned to his home port of Halifax NS, which is where he was born.

Aside from letting Andrena know her Dad's friend honoured his promise to her, I now find I also have a genealogical reason for trying to contact them.

Much appreciated, if anyone can help.

Cheers ...
Edmonton City Directory lookup - 1895-ish

I'm hoping that there is a reader of this board in Edmonton that might do a lookup at the library for me.

My grandmother was born in Edmonton in 1895, but I don't know when her parents arrived or left - they weren't there too long.

So... if someone would be kind enough to look in Edmonton directories from 1893-1900 for a Mervyn Mackenzie, barrister/lawyer, and let me know if they find anything, I'd be greatly appreciative.

If you really want to go overboard with your help, you could look up my grandmother's birth record!

Joan Isobel Marion Mackenzie was born 12 Nov 1895 in Edmonton to Mervyn Mackenzie and Ethel Osler.

Many thanks for any info anyone can provide.

I would appreciate some help in contacting descendents of my grandfather's sister Sarah Weir, who came to America from Ahoghill Parish, County Antrim, Ireland in 1894. She married William SWAN, lived in Illinois and had a large family. They moved to Edmondton, Alberta, and had 4
daughters and 3 sons.

They were listed in the Beechmount Cemetery: William Swan: Jan 12, 1945 and Sarah Swan: Aug 31, 1944.

Possible info source on FTM Canadian Genealogy disc #118 for both William and Sarah (Weir) Swan. 5/2001.

OBITUARY: Lookup done by the Edmonton Public Library Research Desk:
William Swan's obituary is found on page 12 of the January 12, 1945 issue of the Edmonton Journal.
According to the obituary, he died on January 10, 1945.
He had three daughters:
Mrs. E. BARRON (Edmonton),
Mrs. S. JONES (Edmonton),
Mrs. J. JOHANSON (Entrance).
He also had two sons:
William (Edmonton) and
Gnr. Samuel SWAN of the Royal Canadian Army
(overseas at the time of Wm. Sr.'s death).

Sarah Swan's obituary is found on page 12 of the August 30, 1944 issue of the Edmonton Journal. According to the obituary, Mrs. Swan died on August 29, 1944.
The obituary also confirmed the names and locations of the children, but cited Mrs. J. Johanson's location as Edmonton instead of Entrance.

Welte family...aka Morgan

I am trying to research a family that lived in Edmonton in the 1890's. It appears that they also had homesteaded along the Pembina River between Jarvie and Dapp. Their name was Welte. They were of German descent, possibly from Switzerland. The only first names I have are Ernest and Arthur. I believe they were brothers. When they left Canada for Mexico (they were miners) around 1911 they changed their last name to Morgan...I have no idea why. Are there some old city directories from that time period which would assist in my research? Ernest was born in 1895 and Arthur was older by about 10-20 years. Any assistance you can give me would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I've been looking at your restorations and they are really an amazing improvement on the old.
The picture of the children in Edmonton was especially interesting, because it is clear to me that it is my father and his brothers and sister! The littlest boy is John Arthur Anderson, and he would be 3 years old. He was named John for his father ( Robert John Anderson) and I'm sure that his second name was for Eliza's cousin, Arthur. R.John was born the same year as Arthur, and maybe he was a favorite cousin. The others in the picture are, top left- Arnold Johnston A. Alma Ava. front left James Edgar, and John Arthur. Ave. Edmonton, Alberta and in the late 1990’s he lived at Canterbury Manor, 8311-142 St. Apt. 119, Edmonton, Alberta.
The name of his wife is/was RUTH NORRIS.

We have the suspicion that Mr. Norris deceased app. in the year 2002; unfortunately we do neither know whether he has children.

Grateful if you can help us in finding heirs!
I would like to invite TODD family relatives who are working on Todd History to contact me to share mutual research. A brief history: William Todd, Doctor, from Dublin Ireland, worked for Hudson Bay Co. 1818-1851 lived at Forts in Manitoba, Saskachewan and later family members moved to Alberta. He married three Metis wives BALLANTYNE, JOHNSTON, DENNETT over the course of his lifetime. I am interested in anyone who has followed this family line.

He was 60 years old and his remains were taken back to Montreal to his family plot, I believe. I have checked the online newspapers for Edmonton but they only go up to 1933.
McCrimmon, Carleton, Knight

Hi Dawn,

I managed to have a look at 2 local history books of the area some of these families lived at. "Leaves of Yesteryear: A History of Bon Accord District" published in 1969, and "Our Treasured Roots: A History of Gibbons and Areas" published in 1982.

These books have stories about the McCrimmon and Carleton families. From these stories I was able to piece together some of the following information.

Lois and W.H. McCrimmon are living in a Seniors Home in Westlock. You can find them and their son Richard here.
http://findaperson.canada-411.ca/search/FindPerson?firstname...

Both George KNIGHT and Grace (CARLETON) are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in North Edmonton. Grace died in 1960. I'm not sure why they are not on the AGS Master Name Index.

Do you have these 5 pages of family stories from those books? If not would you wish me to send them to you?

Peter

Dawn,

That Biography of Ethel Sylvia WILSON you received from Stella, shows that Ethel died in 1983 and David died in 1935. But the AGS Master Name Index does not appear to list these. Even though all Edmonton cemeteries have been recorded and are on this list. So I am wondering why are they not on the AGS Index?

Perhaps an obituary would show where they are buried and more about her children.

Peter

Was with my mother in Vancouver Island in 1978-79 and moved out to Alberta shortly before I was born. Have pic of his other daughter who is a couple years older than me. He had(s) brother who lived in Calgary. His mother lived in Ontario in amongst a reserve.
My mother last saw him with beautiful long waist length black hair, darker skin and about 5"5 with slim build. Would love to meet him and introduce myself and let him know my mother had a girl, since Hector wouldn't know.

I'm currently researching an Armstrong family that moved to Edmonton around 1896-1899. Joseph Hall Armstrong (b. 1868 in Ontario) and his wife Agnes Moore (b. 1873 in Ontario). They moved to Edmonton with 2 children Grace (b. 1893 in Ontario) and Hazel. (b. 1896 in Ontario). They had several children after they settled in Edmonton. (as follows)

Joseph M. Armstrong (b. 1899 in Edmonton)
Ardis L. Armstrong (b. 1901 in Edmonton)
Wyburne H. Armstrong (b. 1903 in Edmonton)
Elma N. Armstrong (b. 1906 in Edmonton)
Robert R. Armstrong (b. 1909 in Edmonton)

So far I have found the family in the 1901, 1906 and 1911 Canadian Census records.

Any additional information about the above mentioned people is greatly appreciated.
