David Armstrong & Alice Hunter Ontario, Alberta, Peace River, B.C. around 1880

I am looking for the family of Alice Hunter. She was married to David Armstrong, probably around 1890ish in Ontario, Canada. To my knowledge they had 7 children, 2 boys, 5 girls.

At least some of the kids were born in Oil Springs, Ontario. Around the start of the century (maybe into the teens) the family was living in Alberta, they moved from the Battle Bend area to Pigeon Lake.

I don't know either of the boys names. 2 of the girls, Ivy & Nora were born in Oil Springs, Ontario. They married Fellers boys and moved to the Peace River Region. The other sisters Jessie (Vitle), Ruby (Finke) & Rena (Churchwell) also lived in the Peace until their deaths.

I have found in the LDS search engine an Alice Hunter, born around 1880 in Barrie, Ont married to a David Armstrong. They have one daughter listed, Ethel, who died in Aug of 1962. There is no listed contributor for this info and I am not certain if there is a connection.

I would welcome any information on this family.

I am trying to piece together the Hook family.
John William Hooks was born 8 July 1879 in Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, England. [His name was recorded as James William Hooks] in the R.C. Baptism register but in 1881 census his name is John W. Hooks. He married Catharine/Kathrine Stewart Briggs in 1901, South Shields, Durham, England. At some point between 1901 and 1916 they emigrated to Canada. He joined the C.E.F.in 1916. At that time his address and that of his wife was Park Hotel, 4th Avenue, Calgary. His occupation was Miner. His religious denomination in 1916 was Church of England.
His mother, Mary, was my great grandmother's sister.
I believe that the family lived in the Calgary area and other relatives remember a Jack Hooks.
Any help would be appreciated.

searching for information relating to Ernest Henry RIDER

I am engaged on some research for my extended family history and am trying to find some information regarding a Great Uncle - Ernest Henry (Harry) Rider.

He was born in Birmingham, England in 1880 and is recorded as living there in the 1901 census. The next definitive information I have is him enlisting in the Alberta Regiment in February 1916. He was part of the Canadian Infantry Force and was killed in the Battle for Hill 70, Vimy Ridge on the 28th April 1917. All this information I have from the Veterans Affairs - Canada website. From these records I know that he had already served in the British Army - but I have been unable find anything more than the regiment he served with. My mother has a collection some memorablia associated with him - a cap badge and shoulder epaulet which is shown a photograph taken with his Father and elder brother which would have been taken when he was England prior to going to fight in France.

His enlistment documents show his residence at the time in Hardisty, Alla. He was employed as a storeman on the Canadian Pacific railroad. His next of kin is given as Florence Jenny Rider. This ties in with some family information we already have - that he married a Canadian called Jenny Fenning. We also know that they had three children, Ralph, Jack, and Zena. Ralph had two boys, Paul and David; Jack married a woman named Louis and Zena had two girls. However, I cannot find any details of his/their residence in Canada. An E. H. Rider is shown in the Alberta 1911 census - but it is not this particular one. Is there any material specific to Hardisty which can help to establish his address, employment there? Do Candian Pacific have records of employees, or an Honour Roll of employees who lost their lives in WW1? I have not been able to find any records of their marriage, births of children or ancestry of his wife in searches in the UK, Canada or the USA. Again. is there anyone with more local knowledge able to help?

Other specific information I am trying to find is when he migrated to Canada. His name does not appear in any of the ships' passenger lists I have located through internet searches.

I am also keen to know what happened to his widow - I do know that she visited the UK with her daughter in the late 20's / 30's and that she travelled on CP at reduced rates. I have found a Jenny Rider on a passenger list - this seems to tie in with family information - but is a little bit early, of course she could have made more than one trip!

I would also be keen to locate any of their descendents - what happened to their children, Ralph, Jack and Zena, and their children. I would have thought that a name such as Zena might be quite easy to search for - but I have not found anything so far.

Alvin Diaz

Daniel Malcolm BRUCE

I am looking for information on Daniel Malcolm BRUCE, or any of his family members.

He was the son of John J. BRUCE and Sarah MCQUEEN. He was born in PEI Oct 1891, and he was living in Heatherdale PEI at the time of the 1911 Census. His known siblings were John, Maggie, Emily and Florence.

He married Anna Eleanor HACKETT, the daughter of John Angus HACKETT and Elizabeth Ann GREENWOOD, on 11 Feb 1920 in Edmonton, Alberta, and they had one daughter, Dorothy A. BRUCE.

The last known location for Daniel is that he was living in at 1264 Granville St in Vancouver in October 1925, when Anna passed away. At that time, his daughter went to go live with her Grandmother (Anna's Mom) in Port Huron Michigan. No one in the family heard from Daniel BRUCE again after his wife passed away and his Daughter went to go live with her Grandmother.

Any assistance you can provide on tracing this family will be greatly appreciated.

Kevin HACKETT

Chriest family - Coronation, Calgary, WWII listing in Lethridge Herald

I am seeking information on descendants of Charles C. Chriest (spelling was changed from Christ to Chriest in Canada) who was born June 30, 1878 at Shawnee, Ohio (west of Corning). His parents were Charles Christ, the immigrant from Alsace, b. 1850 and his wife, “Minnie” Schmelzer.
Charles C. Christ, the oldest son, married Anna Mary Wedding at Lawrenceville, Illinois in September 1897. They immigrated to Canada in 1906 and became naturalized citizens of Canada in 1909 according to the 1911 census for Alberta, Canada.
In a letter dated 1926 Charles C. Chriest, then living at Coronation, Canada said he and his wife had four children, two living. Children were Charles Roy (Ray?) Chriest, b. 31 Jan. 1897; Joseph Sylvester Chriest, b. 30 Sept. 1902; James Alvin Chriest, b. 24 Nov. 1904 and Russel Rostin Chriest, b. 26 March 1910.
The two children living in 1926 included Joseph Sylvester Chriest married to Helen Girkey with no children, and James Alvin Chriest married to Ester Pearson with three children, one girl and two boys (names not known).
In 1928 Charles C. Chriest was operating the Calvary Hotel at Calvary, Alberta, Canada.
The Nov. 20, 1944 issue of The Lethbridge Herald carried a list of Alberta Casualties. Under the heading of Wounded, Alberta Regiment is listed William Charles Chriest, RFN, Mrs. Helen Chriest (mother) Fallis, that could be a son of Joseph Sylvester Chriest and Helen Girkey.
I have information on Charles C. Chriest’s siblings: Paul R. b. 1879; Catherine b. Dec. 1881; William b. July 1884; Joseph b. July 1886; Frank b. Dec. 1889 and John Anthony b. June 1893, all born in Ohio but who later worked for railroads at Columbus, Ohio; Washington, Indiana; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Normal and Bloomington, Illinois; Chicago, Illinois and Huntington, West Virginia. John A. Crist was later a chiropractor at Cumberland, Md.
Trying to track down any information on my great grand aunt. Have very little to go on, and am not familiar with Alberta on-line resources (I'm in NB) so any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Mary E FITZPATRICK born 14 Apr 1889 in Port Elgin, Westmorland County, New Brunswick. Married a widower with three children, A.C. LAMBLE. Have no further details concerning when or where they were married. The last information I have concerning Mary was a mention of her in her mother's death notice in 1934 as residing in Thurold, Alberta. A note on a family paper has her husband's name as Bert, so possible the A stood for Albert? I have a 'possible' date of death for Mary as 22 Jun 1952, but have no clue where it came from, or if it is fact.

If anyone can point me towards some on-line resources that may help me with this branch, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you.

Albert Tohm and wife Elisabeth

Does anyone have any infomation on this family. Albert was born in Germany about 1872 and Elisabeth was born in IL or WI in about 1879 (believe her maiden name may have been Smuckal). They were married more than likely in Bottineau Co. ND. about 1897. They had the children Alvin, Clarence, Leo,Arthur, Lillian and Clara when they left ND for presuming Alberta Canada. Then I have found family trees which list other children born in Canada. I am trying to find clues on mainly Elisabeth or Elizabeth which I believe may be the missing family member I am looking for. Any help would be appreciated.

I can not find them in Family Search on the 1881 census or anywhere after their marriage.

James David Clark was born about 1845 and wife Margaret Love was born about 1848.

A Will of Margaret's father, made in 1895, indicates that his daughter Margaret and her husband James D Clark were in "Edmonton, North West Territory".

Anybody find them in anything...I check 1901 and 1911 and came up empty...

I would appreciate a hand
Susan

He was last known to be in the Didsbury Sub-District at the time of the 1901 Census. Sometime between 1901 and 1910 he was arrested for beating his wife; she sold his carpenter tools and she and the 5 children returned to the US. Can anyone give me pointers as to how I might trace him? He might have been committed to a mental health institution as he likely had Huntington's Chorea, and he was an alcoholic. Any help much appreciated.

Hi: I am trying to find information on the family of Eleanor L. Sands from Horburg, Alberta. She had a son, Cpl. James Prentiss Sands, who served in World War 2 overseas. Cpl. Sands belonged to the Calgary Highlanders, R.C.I.C. and died in Holland on April 1, 1945 and is buried at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery. I have no other information on the family and I am trying to find out if Eleanor had other children besides James. I have a friend who served with Cpl. Sands in Holland and he said James saved his life over there.
This man is interested in contacting any family members of Cpl.Sands. Any help in locating family members of Eleanor would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Catherine Kauffman

Pennfield Parish Military Historical Society formed

Greetings:

Since 26 January 2007 I have been researching the history of the former WWII Air Station at Pennfield Ridge, NB and the former army training grounds (Camp Utopia) at Utopia, NB. Due to an ever-increasing interest in both of these former military bases and our veterans in general, I decided to form the “not-for-profit” society, “Pennfield Parish Military Historical Society Ltd.” to help further preserve the rich military history of this area.

The purpose of this society is to discover, procure, collect, preserve, display and interpret material of historical value associated with the area and to work with other organizations that have similar goals. The Beaver Harbour Community Venture Ltd., located at 18 Quaker Lane in Beaver Harbour, NB, has agreed to provide space in their archives so a display of artifacts, material, etc. can be made available to the public and further raise awareness of the sacrifices of our servicemen and women.

We are well on our way to achieving our goal and anyone with any information on local servicemen and women from Pennfield Parish, information on the former Air Station (No.2 ANS & No.34 OTU) and Camp Utopia, photographs, artifacts or memories to share please feel free to contact Chris Larsen at 260 Main Street E/ Beaver Harbour, NB/ E5H 1K4; (506) 754-2323 or (506) 456-2145; www.pennfieldparishmilitary.com or e-mail pennfieldparish@yahoo.com

Regards,
Chris Larsen
President of "Pennfield Parish Military Historical Society"
Seeking information on Moore descendants

Looking for information on the descendants of Charles Ernest Moore and Mary Harper (Perley) Moore.

Mary Harper Perley was born in Maugerville, Sunbury County, New Brunswick on 20 Oct 1882 to George Albert Perley and Anne Hastings Harper. She married Charles Ernest Moore 20 Oct 1909 in Sunbury County, NB. The two of them appear on the 1911 census in MacLeod, Alberta. Charles is listed as being born in Oct 1879 in the U.S.A. with his date of entry into Canada as 1886. At some point they relocated to Saskatchewan as Mary is mentioned in her father's death notice of 1934 as residing in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan and then mentioned again in her mother's death notice in 1940 as residing in the same area.

Unfortunately, this is all I have to go on. I would be very greatful for any help.

Rescued Wedding Photo, MAFTEY Surname, Canada, Early 1900s.

As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them. I've had this one for a while, and I might not be in the right part of the Canadian message boards, but when I Googled the surname MAFTEY, there were sites that had information about people living in Alberta, with that surname.

The photograph is of a wedding party. The bride & groom are seated in front of a house, and all of the guests are gathered around them, including a band. This is early 1900s. Someone wrote 1932, then scribbled out the 32.

Also written on the back it reads: Maftey Procechen Canada 1932 (32 scribbled out), Daughter's Marriage.

I've posted this on another board, and someone suggested that maybe Procechen is procession and someone spelled it wrong. I've also seen the name MAFTEY used as someone's given name. I look at it and tend to think that it's a photo of MAFTEY's daughter's marriage.

I've found the name MAFTEY under interned Ukrainian's in Canada. Might PROCECHEN be a Ukrainian name? I'm quite certain that Procechen isn't a place in Canada.

I'd like to find a MAFTEY family who would like to have this. Maybe they can identifiy someone in the photo and get it back into the hands of family. I only ask what I have into the photo.

I'm open for suggestions.
I have recently started searching for my ancesters in N.America and trying this way to locate two brothers of whom I know that at least one lived in Alberta, Canada.

The two brothers I'm looking for was born in Hulu, Bosebo parish, Jönköpings län, Sweden.
Axel Salomonsson birthd. apr 7, 1859 and
Gustaf Salomonsson birthd. feb 25, 1871.

Their father's name was Salomon Nilsson

Axel first went to N.America in 1887 but came back to Sweden and went again to N.America together with his younger brother Gustaf in april 1892.

They arrived Ellis Island, NY, May 9, 1892 with steamer "SERVIA" from Liverpool.
In the passengers list their names were changed to Axel Solomonson and Gust. Solomonson.

Gustaf had some mailcontact with a daughter of his sister Ida Sofia Salomonsdotter. The daughters name was Elin Josefina Mårtensson. He wrote that he lived in Alberta and he had two sons, one of them served in WWII.

This is as much info I have on Gustaf.

Axel may have been in Seattle, Wa and is considered "lost". He wrote a letter from Seattle (hearsay) I have not seen the letter myself and that was the last anyone heard of him.
Bill Clark was also known to have been at 1621 Quadra St., Victoria sometime before Maple St. Home town recorded as Edmonton Alberta.

Bill Clark and my Dad (Bill/Billie WYATT) served together, during the war. Dad was on the west coast Triangle Run, for about 18 months (1941-43). Know he served aboard HMCS Prince David, but I'm not sure which other west coast ships and I believe Bill Clark was on the David, as well. My Dad then returned to his home port of Halifax NS, which is where he was born.

Aside from letting Andrena know her Dad's friend honoured his promise to her, I now find I also have a genealogical reason for trying to contact them.

Much appreciated, if anyone can help.

Cheers ... Toni, Ontario.

Medals - possible Deans/Partridge/Young Surname connection ?

Hello,
I attach two pictures of medals found in a friends wife's jewelery box. Sadly his wife has passed on. I am trying to help him determine the origin of these medals.
His wife's maiden name ...Deans (Scottish), her maternal line -Partridge and Young ...so maybe that might help in the connection (?).
The chains are quite heavy, perhaps not for a female to normally wear.
The blue medal has what looks to be a chicken on it.
The other has a lion on it facing left.

If anyone has suggestions as to what websites might help in obtaining further information about these medals or perhaps if one knows of a more appropriate place to post the pictures and queries, I would certainly love to hear from you!
Thanks in advance,
~Shannon
Stella

Did you see my answer about your KRAKOW.

Here it is.

Hi Stella,
Today I was able to visit the Provincial Archives and also checked on those Vital Registers in the KRAKOW area. But sorry to say no results.

That Chipman Register of BMD started in 1909. It did have other places in this register, also a few Krakow.

I then looked for other area Registers. There was a Krakow register, it started August 1910, and also had other nearby places listed. The Wostok register starts in August 1906. The Andrew register starts in 1920. The Mundare register starts in 1908. All these Registers had a lot of other nearby places in them.

I did look at names on the first pages but didn't see anything that looked or sounded like CHMELYK.

After a bit of searching, the person looking after the Book Store at the Archives found me the "Alberta: Index to Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths Registrations prior 1900". So I purchased it for myself.

Like it says, its pre 1900, except almost every page has 1 or 2 marriages on it that are from 1900 to 1906. And almost all places are the big places of Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge, with a few smaller places mixed in.

So thats my day away from the computer

Peter
