I am seeking relatives of Samuel MacKeanzie, son of John MacKenzie b. 1880 Cardross, Scotland and wife Elizabeth Jane. Samuel served in R.C.A.F. WW11 and was killed on 29/30August 1944. Grew up in Medicine Hat moved to work for Hudson Bay Co. in Vernon, British Columbia 1933. Samuel was my mother's first cousin. I am researching family tree. My family recently sent flowers to his grave which were included in a local celebration of the 60th anniversary of his death. The locals in Denmark still uphold his memory.

Street Medicine Hat around 1910 to 1920.
I believe this would be John William Pickard, the son of John Reynard Pickard, and J W was born on 17 Feb 1873 in Leeds, Yorkshire, UK. He subsequently lived in Scarborough UK where he was a baker on the 1901 census.
If there are any descendants of J W Pickard in Medicine Hat or elsewhere in Canada, I would be delighted to hear from them

LOST Grandfather - Henry John WRIGHT

Grandfather Henry John WRIGHT a compositor/printer, was at home in London, England with his wife and four children in the 1901 census. We know now through the Ellis Island site that he left Southampton in 1904 and arrived in New York en route for Winnipeg. A volunteer in Winnipeg found a reference to him in a 1905 Henderson Directory. We have just found him in 1911 census living alone in Medicine Hat aged 40, a printer and a Baptist. We know nothing further of him. His wife Emily and family remained in London. What became of him after 1911? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jean.

LOOKING FOR POTTER

Hi, I am looking for any descendents of (Jubilee) Charles Potter, b 1887 Essex England and emmigrated to Canada in 1906 aged 20. He left Southampton England on the St Louis and arrive at Statton Island NY where he was "processed" and then he travelled to Canada and settled in Medicine Hat. His sister (Annie) Mabel Miller with husband Ernest Frank Miller and 2 children (Ernie and Daisy). Ernest went to WW1 but never returned. Mabel remarried and moved to BC. I am interested in Charles and his family at this point in time to add to my family tree. Charles had an older brother Henry John Potter - known as Harry. He was my great grandfather.
According to Harry - he "ran away" from home after his mother died and did not have any further contact with his family again. He moved to Australia with his English family (I have heard that he also has an American family), on a government sponsored programme. Hence, I am in Australia and chasing leads from afar!
Please reply if you have any information.
Many thanks
Michele Butler (Potter)

Please help with marriage date about 1929

hope that you might be able to help me in finding a marriage date for my g-aunt Henrietta (Dolly) SMYTH who married Charles Andrew PLOWMAN in Medicine Hat.

Dolly was born 1887 in ON and Charles 1870 in Iowa. We have narrowed the date to about 1929. Her g-nephew who is still living in the Buffalo area where the family first settled, says he was a young boy of about 4 or 5 when they were married and he remembers the shivaree that was held for them. The family was originally Methodist but Dolly’s father attended the Presbyterian Church in ON where he started a Sunday school. My cousin seems to think that the marriage was probably at the minister’s house and likely the United Church.

I do not need an actual record, only the full date of the marriage. Both are buried in Empress and there were no descendants.

Marriage help! - PLOWMAN/SMYTH -abt 1929

I hope that you might be able to help me in finding a marriage date for my g-aunt Henrietta (Dolly) SMYTH who married Charles Andrew PLOWMAN in Medicine Hat.

I am looking for any information on the GIBBS family in Alberta.

Nelly (Eleanor) Gibbs was my Great-Grandmother was born in 1880, married Frederick Ritchie, died in 1957 and is buried in the Claresholm Cemetary. (They also lived in Ontario near Beaverton for some time.)

She had 4 brothers and I believe there was a large age difference so some could have been half brothers.

As far as we know Fred Gibbs had a construction company in Medicine Hat (my Dad visited him there ca. 1954).

We think that Frank & Billy did construction or had a company around Lumsden, Saskatchewan before also coming to Alberta.

Dave may have worked with the brothers.... we don't know.

One of the brothers son's is Bill Gibbs who was around Calgary and may still be around. He has a daughter who married a David T...? (sounds like Tretchaud).

If this sounds familiar to anyone please let me know.

Thanks,
Karen

I see there is an attachment note at the bottom; I can add our wedding picture if its permitted
Owen Leslie Lawrence Clarke

Ronald Rory Mor McLeod

Hi to everyone that comes on here. I am looking for my son who I gave up for adoption in June ,1979. At the time I asked that he be given to L.D.S. family- but I dont think that wish was carried out; I also asked that his name not be changed- but that wish too was not granted. As all are aware the adoption laws changed in Alberta- and I sent my info in, in hopes that he and I could be matched up. No luck there. I received my papers on Monday with the information about him- but of course all I got was his name- a new one. His name now is Ronald Rory Mor McLeod- I need to find him- I have this huge fear that he may not know he is adopted- which I strongly feel is a huge injustice to him- in the event that if I do find him and tell him- he may either hate or it may destroy him!! So please can someone help me. He would be 25 going on 26 in June. Thanks to all of you!!
Jean McCluskie

Halls in or near Medicine Hat 1904...Marguerithe Hall

Hi...my grand mother was abandoned in Helena, Montana in Feb of 1904 in a basket and thought that her biological parents might have been from the Medicine Hat area. I'm not exactly sure why, but the research she'd done seemed to suggest it. She was a very young infant when she was left with the Gernold's in Helena, and all she knew was that the name on her birth certificate was "Marguerithe Hall." If you have any informations on Halls in the area that might know anything about this, I would be so thankful. My grandmother is dead and died without ever knowing her birth parents. My mother and I would like nothing more than to find them and learn about that part of our family. The only other information we have is that her biological father apparently wrote to her adoptive mother, requesting a photograph of his daughter.

Obituary look-up in the Medicine Hat News

Does anyone know who I might contact to look up an obituary in the Medicine Hat News? I contacted the newspaper and they said that while their old newspapers are on microfilm, it is necessary to go in and do the search in person. They do not have the staff to do this for anyone. Since I am living in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA, that is quite a distance to go for an obituary. I am searching for the obituary for FRANK PETER DARCY, normally a resident of Nemiskam, who died in a Medicine Hat hospital on May 26, 1951, and is buried in the Medicine Hat Hillside Cemetery. If anyone can help me with this I would appreciate it very much. Thank you.

David and Mary (ELDER) MARTIN and family from Scotland

Hi. I am seeking information on the MARTIN family who immigrated from Scotland to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. David and Mary (ELDER) MARTIN settled there with their children. I believe they were David MARTIN, Vivian MARTIN, and John Elder MARTIN. John was a chef who eventually moved to the Michigan, USA, and married my grandmother, Beatrice Mae (GETTY) WAINWRIGHT on May 27, 1935 in Wayne County, Detroit, Michigan. This was his third marriage and her second. He joined the Canadian Army in 1918. He used to cook for the Browne Memorial Camp for Boy Scouts in Abilene, Kansas. He died in 1962 in Detroit. If anyone has any information of any of these people, please, please, contact me. Or, if you don't know anything about these people, but you know of a source that I can write to, please forward that on to me. I am not familiar with where to look for genealogical data in Canada. Thank you in advance.

Donna

BARNES, LOKIER, TINNEY

Herbert Albert Barnes and his wife Eleanor (nee Lokier), initially resided in England. The marriage produced a son, John Henry, born February 27, 1891. John Henry Barnes, also known as "Jack", came to Canada in 1911. After WWI, Jack applied for a Soldier's Settlement Loan and used it toward the purchase of horses and tools. Under the Soldier's Settlement Board, he was given a quarter section of land. In 1930, John Henry Barnes married Olla Mildred (nee Tinney), daughter of Thomas Henry Tinney (1865- 1941) and Betsy Ann (nee Tinney) (1865-1935). John was employed with the Medicine Hat Post Office for many years; wife Olla, was trained as a school teacher, having taught locally at Irvine and at Elm Street Elementary in Medicine Hat. The Barnes' had two children; Herbert Albert (1935), and a daughter, whose name is unknown at this time (1933). Olla Tinney's family owned a cattle ranch, known as the IV Ranch which was located north of Medicine Hat in the "British Block". Previously, the Tinney's were located in the Feldman Lake area. Mr. Tinney was a second year graduate of the Guelph Agricultural School and specialized in livestock judging, doctoring and breeding throughout the area. He was among the first agriculturalists to introduce Galloway Cattle and Clydesdale Horses to the area. Following the expropriation of lands located within the "British Block", the Tinney family came to live in Medicine Hat, where their children could receive an education.

I am looking for any information about Elizabeth Brannen. She was born in 1880 in Edinburgh, Scotland, married Peter Marnoch Simpson about 1900 in Scotland, and they had 4 children; Billy in 1901 in Dundee (he died about 1905 by drowning in a river by their home), Peter Marnoch Simpson 9 July 1905 in Dundee, then they came to Canada and had Dorothy Elizabeth 19 Sept 1908 in (I think) Medicine Hat, Alberta and Jean Violet 11 Sept 1911 in (I think) Medicine Hat, Alberta. I know that Elizabeth wrote a few poetry books, my mom has one - from after Elizabeth married Peter. Elizabeth died 31 Jan 1944 in Medicine Hat and Peter (her husband) died 25 Oct 1969 in Medicine Hat - they are both buried in Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat. Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

Greetings!

Just thought I'd check out the site, and lo and behold, there is a message board for my home town! I was born in Medicine Hat, along with both parents, and my maternal Grandmother was born in Redcliff. Enough about me..

I am tracing a few surnames in the Hat. My surname, at birth, was SMITH, which was changed when my mother remarried. There are many Smiths of course in the Hat, so I am concentrating more on my mother's side. She was born Susan Kathleen OSGOOD, along with a twin sister, Sally Eileen. Her parents were John Edward Albert "Jack" OSGOOD and Lenore Mae Bell MORAN. Lenore's parents were Patrick John William "Bill" MORAN and Clara Agnes LAVELLE, and HER parents were Patrick LAVELLE and Matilda BRAZEAU. <whew>

Any information on any of these surnames from the Medicine Hat/Redcliff area would be appreciated! Patrick and Matilda Lavelle are buried in Hillside Cemetary, as are Lenore and Jack Osgood. The other Osgoods in the area are all related through Jack Osgood as well.

Thanks for everyone's time in reading this! Cheers, and thanks!

Mike
Victoria, BC

Looking for Esther Hillenburg who lived with her mother in 1942. Can't remember the address but looking at today's map I am most confused because the town has grown from the 10,000 souls of those days; I walked up probably 4th or 5th Avenue (it had a large church on the hill at maybe 5th Street) probably as far as 9th or 10th Street, or possibly even further.
She attended First Baptist Church on 4th or 5th just off North Railway.Believe it is no longer there.
Owen L L Clarke (Les)

Hello...good to finally see a Medicine Hat location on this board !! I have been searching for my Boschee (Bosche) link. Looking for reminants of one Nadan (Ned) Boschee, father was Henry. They moved to the Cypress Hills area in the early 1900's from South Dakota . Nadan was born in Eureka, South Dakota. She was married to one Olga Roeder and they eventually moved to Pine Lake, then off to Red Deer, Alberta until around 1972 or 1973. Nadan had sister Maria b. 1869, Eva b. 1893, Maria b. 1895, Sam b. 1896, and two twins Regina and Yortha b. ??, Henry is of Russian decent. Apparently there are many decendants in Medicine Hat, however, I have hit a wall with this side. Some other names, Van Wert and Baker keep coming up as potential spouses.
Thanks in advance.

Vancouver Sun newspaper, Vancouver, BC
November/19/00)
GEMMILL _ Madeline Joan (Maddie) of the Lazy Dog Ranch, Enderby, BC. Born August 22nd, 1941 Medicine Hat, Alberta, died November 11, 2000 Enderby, BC. Survived by her aunt Bernice, and cousins Kathy, Candy and Barb, and a "Jillion" friends. She was awell loved and respected teacher at Pleasant Valley Secondary School in Armstrong and at David Thompson Secondary School in Vancouver. She represented Canada on the Canadian Women's Field Hockey Team in the 1960's and '70's. Maddie loved her "four foots" (dogs and cats) with a passion.
