Gottlieb, & Minnie Burdinsky were buried in Mount Auburn Chem., Rimbey in 1963 and 1957 respectively. There are very few "Burdinsky's" in the New World, so I have to wonder if there is a connection to my wife's grandfather, Frederick Burdinsky b. 1876 Kris Auteburg, Germiney, d. 1954 Springfield, IL., USA. having Immigrated in 1907 with his wife and children. Does anyone have moor on Gottlieb & Minnie?

Hi,
I'm interested in researching my father's side of the family. His name was Lawrence Bruce Berg. His father's name was Ole. He had three brothers: Ole, Dennis and Lance as well as two sisters:Dora and Irene. I do not know his mother's name. My father came from Ponoka Alberta. Having been diagnosed and treated for a low-grade cancer, I would like to know if there is a history of this disease on that side of the family as there does not seem to be a significant occurrence of it on my mother's side.

This may not be acceptable, but I shall give it a try. We went to the Anthony Hill 100 School reunion on the 2nd of September. While in Ponoka we went to take pictures of the 100 year old school. I left the camera on the tailgate of our pickup. By the time I remembered it we were near the highway. Please if anyone sees this I really would like the word passed around. I am heartsick about the loss. Reward is offered. I don't care about the camera but I would like the chip (digital camera) with the pictures on it. Those memories I cannot replace. What a wonderful time we had. Renewing friendships lost over 60 years ago. Thank You any one that can help.

Both died in the 1930s in Magic District - I don't know whether this is nearby - and they had at least one child, named Gwladys, who was born circa 1910 and possibly another called Myfanwy. Thomas was the brother of my great grandmother, Sarah.
Looking for anyone who knew my grandfather. He apparently never married . I know he died on Oct 20 in the 1970's. He left Cape Breton in the early 1920's and never returned. He was supposed to have worked as a lumberjack???? I have been told that he was quite a big man. The only thing I am certain of is Oct 20 and that he never married. Also MacDonald could have been spelled McDonald. Long shot, but you never know unless you ask. Thank you
Lynn MacDonald

Alexander, Drachenfels and Titoff families

Hello,

I am working on my family history and have tracked my grandmother (Elisabeth Grace Drachenfels) and great-grandmother (Anna Drachenfels) and Anna's future husband (Andrew Titoff) to the Rimbey area of Alberta. They arrived in Vancouver in December of 1924. I have a mention of Elisabeth Grace attending the Olds Agricultural college in 1926/27. And then her marriage to Thomas Anthony Alexander in June of 1930. My mother has the book Tributaries of the Blindman - which mentions allot about the Alexander family. I would like to try and get some more information on Anna Drachenfels and Andrew Titoff as they spent 6 years on a farm in the area before moving to Vancouver (where they then married). Was there a newspaper of the area, or any other suggestions on sources of info?

Ive just been recently discovering who one side of my family is after 40 years of age. MY grandfather died when my mother was 2 months old at Gull Lake in Alberta in 1940 while trying to save a drowning boy who dragged him down with him.
His name was and is Frederick Allan Stafford, apart from some very basic details about him, myself and my mother know little about him, although he was very young at 20 when he died.
The only article I have on him, was his obituary, which said that he was born in Lamont Alberta, he came to Ponoka at the age of 9, the article goes on to say, his pall bearers where the following people: Harry Davies, Edwil Jones, Jack Krikpatrick, Gerald Russell, milton Gilchrist and Arleigh Hinkley, I am wondering if any one who reads this might know of these names, and if they are either alive or have children that might be able to add to my grandfathers life story, short as it was.
Please respond to this if any of these names are familair.

thank you.

Todd
Vancouver, BC

Caroline Grossman grave

I am trying to find the grave of my husbands great grandmother, Caroline (Swatsky) Grossman. She died while in the mental institution, and is apparently burried in a cemetary there in Ponoka. I am spacifically looking on information of where her grave may be located and perhaps the records of her stay in the institution. Her husband Andrew Grossman died in 1956 in Edmonton. Caroline was his first marriage, neither wife was mentioned on his stone. Obviously, Caroline died before 1956 and after 1915 when her last child was born. If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Victoria

Krossa-Ollech-Sudermann families

My mother's parents:

Father: August Ollech. Born 1900 or 1901 in Puppen, near Ortelsburg, Prussia (now Poland)
Mother: Wilhemina ("Minnie/Minna") KROSSA. Born around 1897. Location unknown.

Minna came to Canada in the late 1920's. She had one brother ADOLF that also came to Canada at some point (not sure if it was before or after Minna.

Minna had several children. Her first son, Paul, was born during her first marriage. The family is uncertain of her first-husband's family name, but "rumour" has it, that he was also a KROSSA. This doesn't make much sense to me. After her first husband died, Minna married August Ollech. Her son Paul passed away. I'm not sure if he died in Canada or in Prussia. Minna's second child was my mother, Emma. Then came Fredrich (Fred). I am not sure which of the next 6 children were born in Canada.

Minna's brother ADOLF had a number of children. His wife's name is unknown to me.

ADOLF's children (possibly an incomplete list) are: Albert, Martha, Isda, Henry?, Paul, Alma, Emma?, Freddie, Margaret. Albert is in Ponoka.

I am seeking information on where the Krossa family originated. I know that August Ollech was born in Puppen, near Ortelsburg. I do not know where the Krossa family came from and if there are living relatives in Germany. I am planning a trip to Europe next year and would like to visit the places where the family is from.

This search has become DOUBLE interesting, I should add, because my husband's family (with the spelling originally "Sudermann") share a similar heritage. His family is from an area in Russia that is not too far removed from where my family roots are.

LUCAS, MORRIS FAMILIES

My grandmother, Maude Eva Morris, daughter of Ruben Kennedy Morris and Samantha (VanFossen) Morris, married Howard A. Lucas in 1905 in Canada. We think that Ruben and Samantha Morris were homesteaders near Ponoka in the early 1900's. Could someone please do a lookup for the marriage license? Howard A. Lucas died in 1907 due to a horseriding accident. I would be very interested in his obituary if it is available in your newspaper files. We do not know his mother or father, but believe he is either the son or grandson of Samuel Brigham Lucas, 1844-1907, the first white settler of Wetaskiwin. I would appreciate any and all information you can provide, as this has been a brick wall until we found the name of the town. Please contact me at:
bjdakan@aol.com. Thank you for any and all help. Ruben and Samantha Morris reportedly were homesteaders up there, but I have been unable to find any proof of this. If they are mentioned in County Histories or census records, would appreciate someone steering me in the right direction - land records, church records, etc. Thank you.

Andrew and Marie Krossa Wierzba

Wonderful, I have data as to who Marie's parents were, where they died and some of her siblings. I also have the name of the ship, arrivival in New York etc. Would be glad to exchange data. Much of my info came from Alberta, Canada. I see no reason for me to send that to you. I will just tell you where it is. Marie's brother John Krossa was my grandfather. If you locate Marie and Albert on the 1901 Census, Leduc Canada, page 8. The Andrew Wierzba, family is listed near the top of that page. Family 106.(line 3) Go down the page to fa mily 118 (line 33) and you will find Marie's parents and younger siblings. Fred and Louisa Krossa, were Canadian citizens, but died and are buried in the United States. If you look on page 14 line 6, you will find her brother CF Krossa. Richard Krossa, who was 21 in 1901, has his birth certificate on file in Edmonton, Alberta, Department of Public Welfare. It is in the original language and is transulated. It lists father as Friedrich Krosa and mother as Louisa nee Adam Domnik. Notice on census at ethnic background that the family are Mazur. Mazurie was located in Poland near and below the present country of Estonia, it was part of Germany and Russia and now is part of Poland.
This material was sent to me, in April 2001, by a volunteer from the Research Group, Edmonton Branch, Alberta Genealogy Society.
If you can't get this material I would be glad to send a copy, along with the other data I have.

Betty Bower

Blake 1871 Census

Does anyone have the 1871 Canada Census and would be willing to do a look-up for me? I'm looking for Francis Blake(sometimes spelled Black), widower, age about 36; daughters Margaret age 10, Mary Elizabeth age 8, possibly son John age 5. When Mary Ann, wife of Francis died in 1866, the family seems to have disappeared from their home near Kingston, Ontario. Francis reappeared in the 1881 census without the children, but with a second wife and family. I'd like to know where the children from the first family were raised. Thanks in advance for any assistance with this puzzle.
Pat.

Campbell family of Ponoka

Am trying to find out the exact death date for my great-grandmother, Asenath Campbell, (nee Dennison). She apparently died in Ponoka, ca. 1933. Her husband's name was Wellington Campbell- he apparently died in Hannah, Alberta, ca. 1931. I have tried to get the Edmonton and Calgary newspapers through my local library on interlibrary loan, however the lending institutions have been unwilling to send them. ( I now live in Portland, Oregon, but am originally from Kelowna, B.C.) Is there someone in Ponoka who could possibly do a look-up for me- perhaps at the local library to see if Asenath's death date would be recorded in their biographical file? I have traced her family to Portland Township, Ontario- but have no info when they came to Alberta from Minnesota, ca. 1900. Asenath was born in Hinchinbrooke, Portland Township, Frontenac, Ontario, ca. 1852. She was the daughter of William Dennison and Sarah Goldsmith. She married Wellington Campbell In Harrowsmith, Frontenac, Ontario, Jan 9, 1876. She would be aprox. 81 years of age at the time of her death. If any one knows more about the Campbell family in Ponoka- I would appreciate any info that you could send my way. They should be on a pioneer list of some sort- and to the best of my knowledge Wellington Campbell was a farmer. I have been trying to find out more about my grandmother, Mary Charlotte Campbell and her parents, Asenath and Wellington- but it has not been easy. Hopefully, there is someone in Ponoka who can assist me. Thank-you so much for any help that you can send my way- it's very much appreciated! Cheer's, Cheryl D. De Mara

Hello,

My great grandfather (Edward Habgood) was originally from England (born 1864 or 1867) and then moved to Namaka. Around 1920 he ended up in the Ponoka psychiatric hospital from alcoholic dementia and he died there in 1952. He was buried somewhere in Ponoka. I was wondering if anyone had any cemetary or obituary records to look him up. I am trying desperately to find out where in England he was born and where he was actually buried.
I am searching for information on the family of Joseph (Joe) KURA (KURO) and Marie Louise DORPER which perhaps lived in the Ponoka area between late 1929 and early to mid 1931. A Lida KURA died in Ponoka on 1 Jan 1931 and is said to be buried in the Forest Home Cemetery. I think she was killed in a wagon accident. I wonder if there would perhaps be mention of the incident in a past issue of the local newspaper?

The family emigrated to Canada sometime around c1911 and according to the book _Hand Hills Heritage_ they first resided in the Hand Hills area where Joe was a homesteader coal miner. His homestead is confirmed by the National Archives of Canada online database. They were in the Bluffton/Rimbey areas by March 1929 and were in Quesnel, BC by December 1931. Joe died in Sumas, BC in 1953 and his wife in New Westminster, BC in 1957. The BC Archives confirm this family knowledge.

Any information on this family's residence in the Ponoka area is very much appreciated. Please contact me at polgara@telus.net .

Cheers,

Laury Walkey
BC, Canada
polgara@telus.net

THOMAS BURGESS TOFT

Hi - I am looking for information on the death Thomas Toft in Ponoka in 1961 in case it may be the same Thomas Burgess Toft I am related to who was born in 1906 in Cheshire, emigrated in 1928, and was last seen as a waiter in Calgary in 1948.

One of my friends in the AGS sent me the following information:

There was a listing for Thomas Toft who died in 1961 in Ponoka Alberta.

The district register for Ponoka at the Archives shows the death of Thomas Toft at the Ponoka Mental Hospital on 1 March 1961. The informant was Dr. T. C. Michie and the funeral director was R. Wilson. Interment was Forest Home Cemetery Ponoka.

If anyone has any idea how I can obtain the death certificate or find out if I have the right person I'd be really greatful. Obviously I hope for information showing that he had descendants I can make contact with. I am not aware of any.

Many thanks

Alan Toft
North Vancouver BC
