Ward - obituary/news story

I am looking for help in finding information about my great grandmother Elizabeth Ward. I was told she was from the Drumheller area. I see on the Master Surname Index that there is an Elizabeth Ward buried Feb. 1955 at Youngstown, Alberta which I understand is not too far from Drumheller.

I have searched the Drumheller papers and have had no luck in finding an obituary or news story. I've been told that she was involved in a house fire and later (don't know how long after) died and was buried at Youngstown.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a genealogy volunteer that would be able to do some hunting for me -- maybe at the Hanna newspaper office?

Thanks for any help or advice.

Lorraine

Help with marriage record-PLOWMAN/SMYTH

Alberta really makes getting and finding vital records difficult if you live outside the province and charge an arm and a leg for a date.
I am searching for a marriage date for my g-aunt Henrietta (Dolly) SMYTH and her husband Charles PLOWMAN. They lived in the Buffalo/Empress area of AB and we think they married someitme around 1929. There were no children from this marriage. Charles had been married before and had two sons that we know of. Both Charles and Dolly are buried in Empress AB.
Any assistance appreciated.

Alva CARSON

I'm hoping to track down Alva CARSON. Born Apr. 20, 1850 in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Lived there until about 1900. Turns up in Calgary in the 1901 census and 1902 city directory, but not in the 1906 directory. Newspaper article re: local history published in his Ontario home town in 1910 mentions "Alva Carson now of Manitoba, but formerly of Picton...". On the National Archives site (western land grants) there's a listing for an Alva CARSON near Oyen in the Special Areas (land granted Nov-Dec 1922). I was wondering whether anyone else is researching this person or whether some kind soul might do a death/cemetery lookup for me. Thanks!

Does anyone know if there are any cemetery records available for Hutton, Alberta in 1918? Hutton (formerly Fieldhome), was near Bassano.

I'm wondering if my uncle was buried in Bulyea Cemetery or Pandora Cemetery. He was a victim of the Spanish Flu epidemic.

I am looking for information on Anastasia Kostyk married to Simeon Kuzemczuk in Chipman Alberta, Nov.20, 1919 at St. Mary's Church. These are my Grandparents. According to the marriage cert.Simeon was born in Galicia, son of Demetrius Kuzemczuk and Anna Jawna. At the time of this marriage he was 25 years old. Grandma was born to Maxim Kostyk and Rosalia Rycar and was 16 years old at the time of the marriage. Simeon Kuzemczuk was also known as Semko Kozemchuk, Sam Kozemko and all variations of these names. He finally arrived at Samuel H Brown as the name of choice when he moved to Detroit Mich. Anyone recogonize a connection? I have further information and would like to find my long lost "Brown" connection.

Hi Debra and List,

Re: “How does this sound?
Benjamin Tinlin, SW quarter, Section 22, Township 30, Range 8 W4
William Tinlin, NW 7 31 8 W4
These homesteads would be just a few miles NE of Youngstown,
Alberta (which is about halfway between Drumheller, Alberta and the
Alberta/Saskatchewan border.)”

Sounds terrific! TINLIN is the normal variant on TINLINE.

I slipped up on my Township calculation and was too far south with the Buffalo guess.

William could be a brother of Benjamin. (Some problems with this!)

!Source: 1871 Census of King Twp., York Co. Div 1 Pg 39/40 April 17, 1871
137 140 Tinline, James M 44 Scotland Presbyterian Scotch Merchant M
Tinline, Margret F 39 England "

Frances F 17 O "

William M 16 O "

Robert M 14 O "

James M 13 O "

Wharton M 11 O "

Benjaman M 8 O "

That would make both Benjamin and William connections of yours via Margaret (nee BRUNSKILL) TINLINE, chr 14 Jan 1831, Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland. Margaret’s mother is the Tamar ARNISON (chr 13 Jan 1791, Long Marton, Westmorland) you mention in your other note. My line is via Matthew BRUNSKILL (chr 20 Apr 1817, Kirkby Stephen) of Cooksville, Ont, brother of Margaret as you outline from the info I sent Michael. I will respond to that note separately, but not likely today, as I am a little over committed.

Thanks for giving all the source links. They will give me lots to do on these long winter evenings.

Thanks again to all,

Glen Brunskill

1/ Can someone confirm what towns Tsp 30, Range 8, west of the 4th are near? I can’t seem to locate an appropriate map.

2/ Can anyone suggest some good sources in that area for early settler records?

From another researcher I got the following lead.

“He owned land in Canada in Township 30,
Range 8 of the W4 meridian [not sure where that is].”

Next step will be to get a section number.

I know nothing about researching in Alberta.

Fortunately my western BOWMAN connections were not too far away in Kindersley, Saskatchewan and my BRUNSKILLs were in Saskatoon so I have some idea where the suggested location would be. I estimate that Township 30, Range 8, west of the 4th would be near Buffalo, Alberta. Can someone tell me if I am correct?

“He” is Benjamin TINLINE (b 1863, [King Twp.], York Co., Ontario) son of James and Margaret (nee BRUNSKILL) TINLINE. In 1871 he was living with his parents in King Twp., York County, Ontario and that is the last I knew of him until this lead.

If anyone knows of a Benjamin TINLINE (or any descendants) I would be very interested.

PS I am also looking for Wharton BRUNSKILL (brother of Margaret above). Wharton (b 1828, Soulby, Westmorland, England, d 1898 Calgary, Alberta), according to family rumor, was a bookkeeper on a ranch in Alberta for some years.

James Alexander Cameron, 1886-1965, was born in Minnedosa, Manitoba. He moved to Alberta in 1910 and homesteaded on N1/2-9-31-8-W4, near Youngstown. In 1927 he married Florence Hilda Leard, 1898-1978, who was originally from Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, and who taught at Wistina School near Youngstown. They had six children, James Alan, John Duncan, Glen Douglas Ramsay, Marion Ruth (Shandera), Kenneth Alexander and Jean Kathleen (Whymark). He joined the Carlton local of the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) in 1911 and was very active in this organization and its successor, the FUA. He served as reeve of the MD of Sounding Creek No. 273, president of the East Central Irrigation Association, and president of the Western Canada Reclamation Association. He was an advocate of the never-realized scheme to divert the Red Deer River to irrigate land in the Hanna and Youngstown area. He also worked as a hail insurance adjustor.
