Otto Rosander

I believe my great uncle Otto Rosander with wife Josie/Josephine worked or raised sheep in this area over a period of many years before returning to Washington. Several of their children where born there as well. The 1911 census of Canada names all members of the family.

One main factor is the listing of Sonne Rosander (same age as my great uncle)........I believe might be the widow of an unidentified brother of Otto. Might you have any information that you could share?

thanks

Art

WOW Soosi - thank you so much for your help. Many of the Volga Germans from Russia (that is what they call people of German descent who settled in Russia beginning in 1763) who came from the Volga region listed Saratov as their place of residence in Russia - it was the biggest city around and also probably where they got their papers.

My Stricker family from the Volga Region included a "matchmaker" who helped my great uncle Henry find a second wife after his first wife died. This matchmaker was Henry Horst and he settled in Iowa. in his obituary it listed Olga Ditton as his surviving niece. The really intriguing thing is that Henry Horst married a Katie "Strieger" probably Stricker, AND my Great Grandmother was a Horst - am thinking these families are all connected beyoned matchmaking.
Thank you again for your help. I really appreciate it.
Patti

Re: Anna Pinchbeck obituary or information from Trail, B.C.

Hi Patti,

I've found some information that should be helpful. First, her name was Alma not Ann.

Alma Hurst was born 13 July 1915, supposedly in Saratov, Russia to Alexander and Marei Hurst. But the Hursts arrived in Quebec in 1911 and that's before Alma was born. Also, the family was naturalized on 29 January 1927 (they were all living in Slocan, BC at the time) but it only shows:

Horst, Alexander farmer from Russia
Marei, his wife
Olga, their infant daughter

It doesn't show Alma so she must have been born in Canada, probably Slocan. BC births online only go to 1903 so no way to check.

According to some old family tree I found online, Alma married John Ernest Pinchbeck in either Slocan or Trail. I couldn't find the date. They divorced and I couldn't find a date for that either. They supposedly had two children, Betty and Harlene. Betty supposedly had three children: John, Mark and Melanie.

http://www.mark-pinchbeck.co.uk/Pinchbeck/Source_Files/CHA42...

I couldn't find anything further about Alma with the last name Pinchbeck so she probably remarried.

I found a border crossing for Alma Hurst Pinchbeck and Olga Hurst Gumm in 1944. They were going to visit Mrs. Florence Gumm in Yardley, Spokane, Washington. Alma was living at 1536 Pine in Slocan.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&...

I'll see if I can find anything else.

Cheers,

Soosi

I would appreciate an obituary lookup or any information regarding Ann Pinchbeck. According to her sister Olga A. Ditton, maiden name Hurst or Horst, border crossing card, Anna Pinchbeck was living at 1536 Pine Ave. Trail around January 1952. The border crossing card indicates that they were from "Komiskensky" Russia - probably Rosenberg, Kamyshin, or Saratov, Russia. The border crossing card indicates that Olga was going to Canada to see her sister who was very ill. This appears to be around January 1952.

Any information would be appreciated including contact with family or friends of Anna.
Thank you
Patti

My great grandparents were Ernest Mayer and Matilda Gillard. The interesting thing is my grandfather's last name was Meilleur and according to the usgwarchives, he married Matilda Mayer. So, I guess my question would be, was Matilda married twice? First to Ernst Mayer and then to Ernst Meilleur? Does anyone have any information on these two? Thank you!

Re: Harry BIRD, born 1896, Fernie

I had them down as possibilities. During my research earlier this year I queried the BC system for all Birds in the area. Nothing matched up with Harry. The problem with Harry Bird is very little is known. He died less than a year after marriage so his wife knew little about him. In fact she thought he was born in Nanaimo, BC. I have made notes, this is one: ///

A review of his military records revealed his date and place of birth of 25 Dec 1896 in Fernie, B.C. His next-of-kin was reported in 1916 as an aunt - Mrs John Rauter of Fernie, British Columbia. Parents were both noted as deceased. Search of John Rauter does show only one John Rauter. There's a marriage entry and a death entry. Death occured on 27 May 1937 in Fernie. Marriage is to Augusta Vogel on 21 Oct 1903 in Michel, B.C. which is about 20 miles from Fernie near Sparwood. It appears that Augusta Vogel is Harry Bird's aunt. What's odd though is Vogel is German for " bird" A coincidence or something else. Did Harry Bird change his name from Vogel to Bird? Military records around the date of his discharge in 1919 note his forwarding address as: Northfield, Vancouver Island. Also mentions a friend, Mr. John Meddley as a point of contact. John Medley does show up in the northern part of Nanaimo, the area known as Northfield in both the 1901 and 1911 census. But what is the connection of their friendship? John Medley is his father's age. Likely a friend of his father. Other clue mentioned: religious faith as Presbyterian. ///

I'm actually not related to Harry Bird, but my daughters are thus my interest. I do appreciate your interest in the issue. Always willing to accept help and ideas.

My Wyoming database only covers the years 1897/98, 1910/11, 1913, 1923, 1936, 1939-1973 which is why I do not have the 1925 accident for Harry Bird. The accident record is probably in the 1925 Wyoming Annual Report of the State Inspector of Coal Mines.

Below is the related data that I found for British Columbia Mining Accidents 1878-1972:

Date of Accident / Name of Person / Age / Colliery (Town) / F=Fatal or N=Nonfatal / Page / M=Metalliferous or C=Coal

1912OCT19	BIRD, HAROLD COAL CREEK (Fernie)	N	319	C
1952AUG2	BIRD, JIM GOLDEN CONTACT	N	A269	m
1906AUG25	BIRD, WILLIAM St.EUGENE	N	218	M
1917APR5	BIRD, WILLIAM COAL CREEK (Fernie)	F	445	C

If any of the above are of interest to you, get back with me. I do have a little more information about these specific accidents.

My database only covers reports for the years 1878 - 1972 (1927 & later fatal accidents only)

from Jerry

Harry did die in a mining accident on 7 Nov 1925 in Sublet, near Kemmerer, Wyoming. His father was a miner too as best as I can tell. Fernie,B.C.(where Harry was born) was a mining town and when Harry joined the Canadian military in 1916 he stated both parents were dead. Possible his father died in an accident although since both died may not be a strong possibility.

Please run the surname Bird in B.C. and see what you get.

Hi Mike, Have you considered late Birth Registration?
Some may not have been registered for whatever reason but when pension time - or applying for a passport - a late registration might have been made.

or depending on the given name as known - the birth given may be different. some people choose a variation of their name- or use a middle name etc.
Helped research for:given Nancy - found she was born Annasasia / was recorded elsewhere as Stasia/Anna/Annie
Helen/ Nancy/ Nastia/ Nastasia on marriage/births of 5 children etc.

Depending on the surname - spelling might be just slightly different enough.not to appear.

I notice at times that names I search - do not appear - but searching by only a given - and the time or place - will bring up the name - where entering the full name - finds nothing. at the BC Vital Events Index online.

Cheers, Stella

Strickland family of New Denver, BC

I am researching the family of John Henry Strickland who is buried in the Nelson cemetery and who lived with his family in what was "The Orchard" area of New Denver. Now that area is the Japanese Internment Camp museum. Recently I visited the kind locals of New Denver and was told that there may have been a Strickland burial or two in the New Denver Cemetery, the upper older section. I searched and did not find one. I am hoping someone who lives there may be willing to look for me. Is there anyone who knows that cemetery well, willing to look? Meanwhile I found some Gunn burials and a Stavert burial, which are also names in the line I am researching. Geroge Hugh Gunn b Sept 7 1923, died Dec 29 1930. Also a Hugh G Gunn 1892-1945 (dates unclear). John R Stavert, infant son of G H and Barbara Stavert, born July 7 1919, died July 19 1919. All buried New Denver municipal cemetery, upper section.
