Hamilton was and is in Wentworth County (southwest of the city of Toronto on Lake Ontario). Reference to "West Hamilton" is odd, as there really was no such place.

However, there is also a Hamilton Township in eastern Ontario in Northumberland County.

Immigration records only date from 1869 onwards. I cannot find Edward and family in the 1861 census.

No, thank you very much. I found a draft card/voter registration card with Sherman Pinkham who was married to Etta Strout but on the card he checked native born, which has me very much wondering now what is going on? Oh I did and have been doing what you said, start at the most recent and do research not just go by stories. I took the research my grandmother (step) had done, filled it into websites with family tree research references and found a lot of mistakes, so when I started on ancestry.com, I put myself as the home person and am working backwards from me. This site was double I believe the cost but definitely I believe has more useful tools or maybe just user friendly. I still use the other site as it is easier for my family to get on an navigate when they want to see things. I'm just so glad I have started this now rather than later. I'm fortunate where I have only lost one grandfather, so I can get a lot of my mother's side information from my grandmother and grandfather and documents also. I actually found a picture of my grandma's dad on here, printed it out, and showed her. He was holding 2 of her nephews. Sorry got sidetracked. I just love all this research and talking to people who love it also is just such a change for me. Well I'm off to bed finally. I have tomorrow off, but have to make up some hours if my daughter feels well and actually makes it to school, and then I can do family history the rest of the day and scan in slides and negatives the other part. Thank you again. I will definitely be looking at this information. The whole getting adopte when he was an adult was not making sense to me, I'll have to confront my uncle more on that one. I don't want to upset my great grandma by saying the wrong thing, but my uncle can handle it. :D

Melissa

Hi, Just checked the LDS site online
It appears that a member of the LDS - has submitted information - not confirmed by church records etc.

re Sherman PINKHAM - born 1882 Cherrfield Maine
Parents Paul S. PINKHAM born Harrington, Washington Maine -Kate FRANCIS June 16,1861.

Do you know of a family member - who may have submitted this information.? If so-perhaps contacting them - may be helpful

Just a thought.Don't want to confuse your research.
WONDER IF. Sherman was the original given name ?
He was adopted by Catherine BOYLE given the name PINKAM- as an adult.
May have accepted a different given name if it pleased his adoptive family.

LDS shows:
Sherman Leslie PINKHAM b 1865 Turner,Androscoggen Main
Parents: Nicholas PINKHAM b.1829 Turner
Alberta Malvina WENTWORTH.

Sherman D. PINKHAM b 1868 Steuben Maine
parents Daniel Bean PINKHAM Lydia Margaret LEIGHTON.

Don't want to assume - but just a thought.
Is it possible that Sherman - is the birth son of Katherine BOYLE - prior to her marriage to Mr. BOYLE?
What is accepted by some these days - was not acceptable years ago. Sometimes the family was not aware of a circumstance - other times the mother had the child away from home - to be adopted out - or left with someone.
These were very well kep secrets - most times the child was never aware of their circumstances.

Just random thoughts.

Cheers, Stella

Hi, If Sherman came over in a fishing boat - there probably would not be a passenger list.
There may be port or entry records.

When researching - it is always best to start with the most current information /current family - and work back -ensure that you have proper documentation - not just ?remembered information.
If there are family papers, bibles, photographs etc - these are all helpful .

there are sites on the internet -No Cost.
that allows you to download reseach papers. Family Trees,
http://www.genealogysearch.org/free/forms.html
Even if you don't have all of the information - this makes it easier to keep track - rather than notes, notebooks etc.
Some allow you to enter what you have researched. where the information came from - confirmed as correct. etc.

Cheers,Stella
Thank you so much. Yes, the attached on his birth place is an error. My step-grandmother put all this information together, and as my great grandmother says "She gets is all screwed up." Love them both to death but my great grandma says what she feels. I called my great grandmother today, and she confirmed he came over as an adult in his 18 to 20 on a fishing boat, but admitted she didn't know much else. She has some stuff written in a book, she is going to look for and send me what info she has. The story I got from my great grandmother which is a little bit more confusing to me after going by the records I had was that Katherine Boyle "adopted" him when he came over, and one of her relatives gave him the Pinkham name. I guess Katherine was a Pinkham before she got married. My great grandma is 95, and she has a pretty good memory, but our family was so and is so quiet on certain things its like pulling teeth to get info, so she's telling me what she knows, but not a lot was said back in her day. I'm 29 and relatively new at this, and aside from my step-grandma who put together the original nobody else is working on making corrections or on anything. I recently lost my grandfather, and that is what has sparked my interest. I didn't grow up out there with this family either, my dad moved to Minnesota when he was 8, so I'm trying to do everything over computer. That's a little background on this. Thank you so much for your suggestions. I will look up that info on the war and see what it says, and on the wedding information. Wow first time posting here, and already so much more help than I could ever imagine. Thank you.

Melissa

Hi Melisa.
You have information that Sherman JORDAN/PINKHAM was born June 11 1873 you believe in Canada?
According to the attachment you sent it shows that he was born June 11 1873 - in Cherryington Me/Mo?
Was that an error by the informant. Who was the Informant?

Do you know When? Shermans Birth Parents Passed away?

You believe that Sherman JORDAN/PINKHAM - was adopted.
Formally ?
If he arrived in the USA in 1893 under his birth name he may have been considered an adult.

Wonder - if he had to apply for Citizenship. Have you searched for a Letter of Intent .Check with the State Archive or National Archive in Washinton D.C.
If he arrived via passenger ship -this will be shown - as well - Port of arrival.

Sherman served in WW1 - have you obtained his service records? -These may/should show his place of birth - citizenship -names of parents.

Marriages: Have you obtained the Marriage Registrations/ Long Form Marriage Certificates for Sherman & wives.
Don't know what is included in U.S. Marriage registrations
but may show Date and Place of birth. Names of parents - perhaps the birth parents.

Have you searched 1881 Census Canada 1880 Census U.S.A.
1890, 1900 Census USA.

Have you searched other passenger lists?

Cheers & Good Luck, Stella

Sherman was born according to the records I have June 11, 1873. The passenger list was for S. Jordan arriving in Boston, MA on August 6, 1893 from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. All I have been told was he was born in Canada, not much help I know. I'm going to give my great grandmother a call and see what else she can remember. He married twice according to the records I have first to Myra Colson in 1905 and she died 1912, and then to my great grandmother's mother Etta Strout. Sherman died February 14, 1957.

Passenger list I found information on was on ancestry.com and was called Boston Passenger List 1820 to 1943. This may not be him as all that is signed is S. Jordan, 18, and clerk. It's the only S. Jordan I have been able to find as of yet on a ship. Thank you.

Melissa

I am trying to find any information I can find on my great great grandfather Sherman Pinkham. He was adopted out of Canada so his birth name was Sherman Jordan. I think he came over on the Yarmouth. I found an S Jordan listed on a passenger list around the time he would have been 18, which is what my great uncle tells me is that he came over as a teenager when his parents died, but I had always thought he had come over as a younger child. If anyone has any information even a tiny string of info you think might be helpful, I would sure appreciate it. I know my great grandmother would love to know more about her father before she dies. She is 95 and still kicking away and taking no sass from no one. Thank you.
Melissa Werth

I attached a picture but had to block out some information, please forgive the creative way I had to do it with paint brush at 4 a.m. when I was suppose to be working and needed a quick fix.

I think that Ermina/Armina is your Minnie, because her parents John and Francis Wedge are also in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in the 1900 census. Their year of immigration is 1891.

From her birth record:
Born 26 Feb 1972, Armina WEDGE
Father John Alex. WEDGE, Yeoman
Mother Frances MARSLAND
Macaulay, Muskoka County, Ontario

This family is in Macaulay, Muskoka in the 1881 census.
Minnie had four sisters at that time.

On the passenger list their destination was Clanwilliam, Manitoba, which is in the R.M. of Minto.

I found an online list of gravemarker transcriptions for Minto and it looks like George, Agnes and a baby son are listed. You’ll find them in the St. John Cemetery, under Lot 11, about 1/3 of the way down the document:
http://discoverminnedosa.ca/admin/FileUpload/files/Minto/Cem...

Under the map in that document it mentions a Clanwilliam History Book. I googled it and it’s called: Forest to field, a centennial history of the rural municipality of Clanwilliam and village of Erickson. If you post on the Manitoba boards maybe you will find someone who can look to see if George and Agnes are mentionned in this book.

He joined the Canadian Engineers and returned to England in 1919 when he married Agnes Gillett. They then both returned to Canada. Departed the US in 1908.

Winchester Township is in Dundas County on the north shore of Lake Ontario, near Belleville. Iroquois is in neighbouring township, Matilda, also in Dundas County.

Here's the marriage of his sister, Mary:

Thomas Evans Fader, aged 30, b. Matilda, of same, bachelor, farmer, son of Rodney & Louisa, married Mary Bickford, aged 23, b. Winchester, of same, daughter of William & Catherine; witnesses: Richard Anderson of Matilda, and Sarah Robinson, of Winchester; 13 December 1892 at Winchester; both parties Methodist, by Rev. H. Brown, by license.

In the 1871 census, they are indexed as Bigford:

Winchester, Dundas Co., Ontario

Bigford, Wm., aged 32, b. Ontario, C.
I'm looking for information regarding William Woodgate, born about 1830 in Suffolk England.

I believe Henry emigrated to Canada in 1870 with a wife named Elizabeth & their four children.

I'd be happy to exchange information about this family.

Thanks
