Thanks for responses. In my case, family lore indicates that wife was a convert; I have been unable to locate an RC marriage through Ancestry but do have an Anglican church record that is a likely match, and then an RC baptismal record for first child a year later, in which the marriage is described as "legitime". These records are ca. 1820. Hence the question. The Anglican record does not list parents' names so this is my brick wall.
