Clifford DOWSON

I am interested in finding out more about the DOWSONs who came to Manitoba from East Yorkshire, England. Charles set out from Langtoft for Winnipeg in 1906. In 1912, his brother Richard with wife Florence and their son, Sidney set up home at Lake Francis.

I believe Charles had a son Clifford and I have just found the following on a missing persons website. It may be the same person:

"On November 20, 1969 Clifford DOWSON was a passenger on a flight from Oxford House Manitoba to Island Lake Manitoba. The pilot of the Cessna 185 was John W. BURTON and Edward FLETT was also on board. Around 11:00am the pilot made a routine call stating that they would be landing in Garden Hill in 15 minutes. The airplane did not arrive at its destination. The wreckage and all three on board were never located."

Does anyone know any more of Clifford? Is there a local newspaper archive?

I am looking for information regarding Ellen Kennedy who married Joseph Whitford at St. Johns, Manitoba on 14 Nov 1833. I believe that Ellen may be of Metis descent. Joseph Whitford was the son of James Peter Whitford.

These were the parents of Elizabeth Whitford. Elizabeth married Thomas Sinclair in 1858 at St. Peters, Manitoba. After their marriage it appears that they moved across Manitoba and Saskatchewan as their children were born in many different locations.

If anyone has any information regarding this family, please write.

Many thanks,

H Moz

I have been unable to find anything on which of their daughters married a William HEATH, or where, but assume it was their daughter Mary Olive who was born 21 Apr 1889 in Lewisville, Westmorland County, New Brunswick. Had hit a dead end on what happened to Mary Olive until getting a copy of her mother's death registration, which lists Mrs. William HEATH, daughter, as the informant.

Am in NB, so would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Thanks in advance

I'm trying to locate any newspaper record of William Henry Craig, who died on 10 Jan 1885 at LaSalle Settlement Township in MacDonald. He lived in Cartier, Provencher on the 1881 census. I'm not familiar with Manitoba geography of that day so I have no idea if that is close or not.

I'm hoping a newspaper record of his death might clear up some unanswered questions of his first wife's death and second marriage.

William Henry was born in Ireland in 1819 and originally emigrated to Lanark County, Ontario.

Any help that can be provided would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,
Lisa

Virtues in southern Manitoba

I am researching my husband's Virtue side of the family who originally came from N. Ireland to the Enniskillen area north of Bowmanville, Ontario, around 1840. One of the sons of Robert Virtue was Archibald and it is his son Robert, born about 1863 in Enniskillen, who is my husband's grandfather whom we know very little about. He married an Elizabeth Strong in Bowmanville and one child Edith Viola was born there. The other children were likely born in Simcoe County at or near Orillia. However the family was to move to Manitoba but I was unsure of any date that they were first there but I just found out a reference to Robert Virtue in 1901 being at Viola Dale (not sure where that is)in 1901. I want to find out when he died and where. Four of the children were to remain in the Plum Coulee, Miami, and Carmen areas while the rest went further west. These were Edith who married Jake Reichert, Pearl who married Thomas Whitfield, Saul and Dorothy who married Neil Galbraith. Anybody out there who can help me??

I am looking for any information on my Falcon ancestors. My great-great grandfather, Jobe FALCON (1854-1933), was born in the Red River Settlement, and later moved to the USA. He was married to Marie LAROCQUE (1857-1940), who had LAROCQUE and SWAIN ancestors. Jobe's father was Pierre FALCON, IV (1820-1892), who was from the Red River also. His wife was Marie-Louise LAVALLEE (1830-?), who had LAVALLEE and McKENZIE ancestors. Her grandfather may have been Sir Alexander McKENZIE. Pierre, IV's father was the famed poet and magistrate, Pierre FALCON, III (1793-1876). He was married to Marie-Suzette Grant (ca. 1796-1877), who had GRANT and CRISE ancestors. Any information including these families would be bvery very helpful. Thanks, and have a Merry Christmas and Boxing Day! James Falcon Bergh

Schur or Szczur in Manitoba

My great grandparents Dmytro & Maria (Bohonos) Schur (Szczur) came from Permeliw (sp) in 1903 to somewhere around Dauphin Manitoba. I have the downline for Dmytro & Maria:Sons Stephan(married Annie Lewitski), Ewan(John), Michael, Elko(Alec),Harry, & Walter. Daugters: Anna, Lena, & Nellie. John and Anna were twins. I am looking for Dmytros Brothers who also came with him. There is a Stephan who married a Sophie(nee:possibly Stebnicka?), also a Walter, an Alec and possibly one more. I have a 1911 census that has Dmytro and his Brother Alec(Elko)(my dad thinks its his grandfathers brother) on the same quarter with their families. The census has Alec,s wife as Anna and Daughters Maria and Paraska. Dmytro and Maria and their childrens families moved to Alberta and settled in the Peace River area. If you have any info or better yet are related to these people I would be thrilled to here from you!

My name is Jon. I live in the southeastern united states. My grandfather was born in Churchhill, Manitoba. He was born in a catholic orphange around 1902.He came to the u.s. sometime after 1910. He said he had a brother, that he lost contact with. He crossed over the boarder and from what I understand made his way to Pennsylvania. He later moved to Tennessee. He married and had one child, John, who is my father. According to a 1930 census my grandfather indicated he was born in New Jersey. This most likely was a tactic to keep from being deported. My grandfather was a wonderful man and told me many interesting stories about the Polar Bear capitol of the world. My grandfather's name is William Dennnis Cleary. His birthday was listed as 12/25/02. If there is anyone in churchhill who has an idea of where I could continue my search please let me know. I look forward to hearing from any friends from up there. Thanks

Hi,
I have been doing some research to find out who the first main families of Waterhen Reserve(now known as Skownan First Nation) and Pine Creek First Nation. These are where my family lines come from.

Some of these are the Nahwahkeekapow. Nahwahkeeshikowenin, Nepinak, Napakisit, Wahkittacummekowenin, Boucher, Genaille, Gambler, Bone, Ferland, Delaronde, St Paul, Pelletier, Oosahwahququinyash, Oskinawens, Chartrand, Parenteau, Aneechin, McKay, Abigosis, Richard, Pangman.

When the Church came into these reserves in the late 1800's they began to anglicize the names. So Nahwahkeekapow became Gabriel. Oosahwahququinyash became known as Pelletier. Otayatch became known as McKay. Nahwahkeesikoweenin became known as Nepinak or Gabriel. Etc.

So if you find any of these names in your family trees, with similar spellings, than you know where those people probably came from. It is hard work, and I am trying to find the Indian Reserve of Waterhen on the 1901 Census with no success. I even checked the census reels of T-6554 and T-6555, which contained a lot of the Indian Agencies. But couldn't find the Manitowapah Indian Agency.

Cameron Parenteau-Longo

Hugh McDonald died at Norway House in 1925 at the age of 63 years. Hugh arrived in Norway House, Manitoba with a daughter, Kathleen. Hugh had a strong Scottish accent which led people to believe that he was not born in Canada. As the story goes, they arrived from the Selkirk or Winnipeg region and why they came to Norway House is not known. Kathleen McDonald married James Robert Robertson and had 3 children, Ila, Harriet (Hattie) and Horace. Kathleen (Katie) left the family and returned to Selkirk or Winnipeg.

I am looking for any information regarding the Hugh McDonald family, specifically where they came from. I would also like to know the name of Kathleen McDonald Robertson's mother.

Please contact me if you have any information regarding this family.

Thank you,

Heather

He was born in 1882 in or around the Russell area. His father William Whitford died in 1882/1883 and his mother Eliabeth McIvor remarried a Welsh gentleman by the name of Alfred Clee so maybe they changed his name to Clee.
T. Gelley of Winnipeg was the person my g-g-grandfather
John Vinnick had listed as his destination once he landed
in Canada in July 1926 with his wife and children. My grand-
mother (John Vinnick's granddaughter told me that when
she came to Canada in March 1927, the Gelley family picked
them up at the train station, and they stayed with the
Gelley's for a few days before travelling on to Saskatchewan.
She said that the Gelley's were relatives but did not know how. Also on the same ship manifest from July 1926 two
other families named T.Gelley of Winnipeg as their
destination also. The names of these other families were
Adolf, Lidja and Emma Nehring(?) and Szmujtro and
Fejgala Cuprick. If any one has info about these names
I would like to hear from you. Thanks in advance.
Connie Comrie
William and Eliza were married 6 Sep 1880 in Belleville, Hastings, Ontario, Canada. They had four children, Philip, Earl, Vera, and Velma. Can anyone tell me if they know where Bannerman was and if anyone knows descendants of these folks?
Dueck Family History?

I am trying to understand the origin of the Dueck name, and how, why and when did they move to Manitoba. The 1881 census say many were born in Russia, but if the name originally is from western Germany near the Rhine river according to Google.

Where are they originely from then? The Dueck family I know speak Low German and were Mennonites for many generations. I was wondering, if they were first in Germany (Prussia) then for some reason moved to Russia and then to Manitoba. I would like to know if they move as a big family or with different families of the same area in Russia and why move to Manitoba and not like Ontario or other Province.

Would they consider themself as Russian or German?

Finding more on those people who move to Manitoba seems very interesting.

I hope someone who knows more about it can respond.
