Cook family in Cranberry Portage, Sherridon, and Gurney Gold.

Looking for information on prospector/trapper Jacob Cook, (d. 1928 on Third Cranberry Lake), wife Lydia (Brittain) Cook, (d. 1961 The Pas). Also seeking information on daughters Harriet, Sally, Mary and son Joseph. This branch of my family lived mostly in Cranberry Portage area since around 1914, but came from Fort a la Corne, SK, and Cumberland House around the turn of the century. They also lived at Sturgeon Landing, Gurney Gold and in Cold Lake/Sherridon. Harriet Cook(d. 1986 The Pas) was married to Frank Dunbar(d. 1989 Dauphin) of Cranberry and later to Wesley Swelander. Descendants are daughter Mary Dunbar (my mother) and son Benny Dunbar. Sally Cook was married to Ben Buchan(d. 1936 The Pas), and died mysteriously around 1943 in Sherridon/Cold Lake. Sally lived at Gurney Gold during the 30's. No known descendants. Mary Cook passed away in Cranberry in 1930 at age 15. No other information on Joseph Cook except for 1906 census showing him as living in Cumberland House. Any information especially pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Norwegian in Canada ca. 1925

I am looking for information for my cousin who lives in Norway...specifically about her father-in-law. His name was Einar Odd Mortensen (b. 27-12-1902 in Norway) and he travelled to Canada in November 1925. I found his immigration record and he entered Canada at Quebec on 11-13-1925. He wrote a manuscript about some of his experiences in Canada and the family is trying to find out more about this time in his life. He was a fur trader in northeast Canada from 1925-1928. He was in Manitoba and The Pas and traveled around Churchill River, Nelson River, Oxford Lake and York Factory on Hudson Bay. He traded with the Cree and had a business/station by a reservation north of The Pas. He went first to Winnipeg and then traveled to Norway House and finally to The Pas and used dogs and a sled to travel the rest of the way to his business/station. For some reason the family believes he lived with a Cree woman. They also said that he worked at the Winnipeg Post when he wasn't a fur trader. The family thought the Winnipeg Post was a newspaper but I am thinking it was a post where business was conducted.

I am not familiar with the resources available to find information about Einar Mortensen's life and business dealings in Canada. I would appreciate any suggestions and/or help anyone has to offer. I did find his immigration record as mentioned above but that has been all I have been able to find thus far. Someone told me about the Hudson Bay Company records and I checked their website. It appears one has to travel to Canada to access these records...is that correct??

Thanks in advance for any and all help and/or suggestions.
--Jane G.

Mary Oman(d), and her brother William were born in Fort Churchill to a Hudson Bay Company employee, William Oman(d) of the Orkney's and a native woman. Mary was born in Fort Churchill but baptised as an adult on August 28, 1822 in York Factory, NWT (Manitoba) by Rev. John West. I was told, according to baptism entries by John West, that on that day, Mary was "baptised with Joseph, son of George Charles and a half-breed woman, and Jane, daughter of John Robertson, clerk, and a half-breed woman. Mary was probably a young woman by this time and possibly unmarried, although she might have been the mother of either Joseph Charles or Jane Robertson."
Does anyone know anything further to this?

Flin Flon: Fitzpatrick & McCann

I have just found out from my Dad in doing some family history that some of his mother`s Catherine Fitzpatrick went to Flin Flon and I know nothing of this family. Except for the fact that according to my father that his Uncle Jimmy farmed in Sask. and went to be with family in Flin Flon. I am very new at doing this and any help is wonderful. My father is the 13th child of the Thomas and Catherine [Fitzpatrick] McCann. My Grandparents farmed just N.E. of the village of Tonkin, Sask. Also according to my father Uncle Jimmy`s wife is buried on the land that he farmed. Dad will be 85 years young this year and except for failing eye sight is very well. He is so excited about finding relatives on his father`s side in the states.Still searching that family as well. It seems that the Fitzpatrick family also went from Ont to Minn. and then some of them came back to Canada to settle in the Yorkton area.
Thank you for any help with this search

Cathie

We just recently found out that our grandfather had been a resident of Dallas Manitoba, Noth of Teulon.(That's what it says on his death certificate)
We never met him as he left for personal reasons, before we were born and the family didn't talk about him.
His name was William Harry Russell, but he went by Harry Russell a lot.
According to some old letters we found he had been in Selkirk in the spring of 1950..then headed home to Dallas, but took ill on his way and died in the Hunter Hospital in Teulon Man. in March 1950. He's buried in the Windsor cemetary ,south of Teulon.
I'm wondering if anyone is still around that might have known him? The letter was from a young girl who thought of him as a nice grampa friend. She was from Leask Sask.
Are there any records in Dallas, or history books mentioning
him?
Any little bit of info would be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Mary Perison
Parents of a girl born in 1932 died of tuberculosis and the girl was adopted by her mother’s sister and husbnd. Their name was Ford. They had one married daughter, who with her husband moved to mainland Canada in 1955. The elder Ford’s moved to Churchill MB in about 1935, and he worked for the Royal Canadian Engineers in Fort Churchill. Their adopted daughter used to visit grandparents in Turnpoint NWT when she was a child. In 1952 the adopted daughter had a son who was adopted by, I believe, the Moravian missionaries.

If anyone has any information on this family please contact me at rkading@shaw.ca

Roy Kading

Hugh had a strong Scottish accent which led people to believe he was not born in Canada. As the story goes, they arrived from the Selkirk or Winnipeg region and why they came to Norway House is not known. Kathleen McDonald married James Robert Robertson and had 3 children, Ila, Harriet (Hattie) and Horace. Kathleen (Katie) left the family and returned to Selkirk or Winnipeg.

I am looking for any information regarding the Hugh McDonald family, specifically where they came from.

Mary Oman(d), and her brother William Oman(d) were born in Fort Churchill, NWT (what is now Churchill, Manitoba, Canada) to a Hudson Bay Company employee, William Omand of the Orkney's and a native woman. Mary was probably a young woman by this time and possibly unmarried, although she might have been the mother of either Joseph Charles or Jane Robertson." If anyone recognized this Mary Oman(d) could you get in touch with me.
Virginia Oman-Fetterly
rowina@res1.mts.net

I just discovered that my 2nd great grandmother, Hannah Jennie Russell, was born July 24, 1842 in Strawbridge (?) Canada, and her mother, Harriet Chandler Russell (spouse of Jeremiah Russell) was born in Ponton (Potten?) Canada. I found Ponton in Manitoba so I'm posting here. This is my first entry into Canadian genealogy so any guidance is greatly appreciated. First question - Where is Strawbridge? Then I can pursue birth record information.

Again, any help or guidance on how to proceed is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
