I got most of the info from the on-line Canadian Censuses and from the local history book for the Bulyea area, which is digitized at http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=503333. Hugh was in Saskatchewan for the 1906 Western Canada Census and the book says he went there in 1903.

If the mother was Mary Adam, then the LDS IGI has :
. Hugh Cochran married Mary Adam on 30 DEC 1850 at Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland
.. HENRIETTA GARDNER Cochran was born on 28 SEP 1856 at Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland (http://www.whatsinaname.net/ lists Ettie as a short form of Henrietta).
.. MARY BOWIE Cochran was born on 22 OCT 1858 at Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland
.. HUGH Cochran was born on 19 DEC 1860 at Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland (which is consistent with him being 21 years old in 1881)
.. ARCHIBALD Cochran was born on 18 APR 1863 at Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland
-- Alexander was possibly born before 1855, when registration wasn't compulsory, or the registry clerk may've mangled the names when when he was born. The 1881 Census suggests he was born in 1856 or 1855.
-- another brother was probably born in 1851 or 1852 and would be named after a grandfather. If the traditional naming patterns hold for this family (but they often didn't), then the grandparents would be 1.) ? Cochrane and Mary BOWIE and 2.) ? Adam and Henrietta GARDNER or 1.) ? Cochrane and Henrietta GARDNER and 2.) ? Adam and Mary BOWIE. The LDS IGI does have a marriage between James Adam and Mary BOWIE on 05 MAR 1821 at High Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland.
-- check out the sons born to Alexander Cochrane and Margaret Campbell , Archibald in 1817 and Alexander in 1820.
-- you should be able to find this family in both the 1851 and 1861 UK Censuses. The 1871 Canada Census may be more difficult if Mary's husband had already died, since the only index I know of is based only on the head of the household, and a widow might be living with a different family. However, you know where they lived, so you can check the microfilms for those areas.
-- the 1881 Census had Alex (age 25, born Scotland), Mary Sclater (age 51, born Scotland) and Hugh (age 21, born Scotland) living with John Terriff (age 26, born Ontario). Mary Sclater sounds like their mother. Terriff may've been Turriff. A John G Turriff homesteaded NW24-3-9W1, which was a mile north of Alex's homestead

I never found Alex or Mary in the 1911 Census. Also, the MB Vital Statistics Database doesn't show either died in Manitou or the RM of Pembina before 1948.

All four quarters of Section 13, Township 3, Range 9 had farmhouses by the time my family moved there in 1960. The house at Hugh's original homestead (NE 1/4 13-3-9 W1) looked long abandoned. Within a couple of years the owner of SW 1/4 13-3-9 had an auction and the house there was torn down.

The James Smith Cochrane who also lived in RM of Louise was at NE26-2-12 W1, southwest of Pilot Mound, per http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/western-land-....
