Re: 1861 Census lookup: Henry & Mary HOOPER
Henry Hooper (1806-1888) married Mary Pendleton (1812-a1871) and they lived on Pendleton's Island, where Mary came from. Pendleton's Island has been turned over to the N.B. Trust and is a nature preserve in today's world. Henry & Mary had 15 children, of which, Ernest Vincent Hooper (1849-1934) was my great grandfather. he married Elmira Elizabeth Appleby and lived in Chocolate Cove, Deer Island, N.B. In 1838 Henry bought 20 acres of land on the northwest side of Deer Island (later known as Hooper's Beach)and they lived there. One of Mary's brothers actively sought the ownership of Pendleton's Island when their father died, and it is suspected that Henry & Mary left that island for a larger island at that time. Henry is the son of William Hooper (a1755-1806) who married Abigail Branch (a1762-?). William and his family lived in Hibernia, Deer Island, N.B. He was the son of the infamous Richard Hooper, who was a Loyalist, but of whom we can find little information as to where he came from, how he got to N.B., etc. William was a Loyalist as well and he is listed as a soldier at Ft. Beausejour (in Aulac, N.B.) during the Rev. War. I have other info on the family if you're interested. Some pictures are located on www.hooperconnections.com
