William BRICKWELL was the son-in-law of William Hetherington who died in St A's in 1846. At that time Brickwell witnessed Hetherington's will and was appointed executor. Brickwell was called "of St Andrew's". William and Jane (Hetherington) Brickwell had married in 1845 in Salem, MA, obviously were in St A's in 1846 when her father died and must have returned to MA because their daughter Sarah was born in Salem in 1848. After 1848 the Brickwell family disappears. No sign of them in the US or Canada. Does anyone know of this family? Thanks. Debbie

Charles/Arthur/Victor Hooper b. 1854, 1856, and/or 1862

I think I've finally solved a problem. I'm hoping those of you knowledgeable about the Hooper clan of Deer Island can confirm or correct what I've come up with. I apologise for the length; I've tried to be thorough.

My Great-Grandmother was Mary Roxanna Hooper (1880-1904), daughter of a Charles Arthur Hooper and Lavinia Jane Pendleton from New Brunswick.

The problem is that I find different variations of the g-g-grandfather name: Charles Arthur, Charles Victor, Arthur Victor, or just plain Victor, all apparently of Henry (1806-1888) and Mary Pendleton (1812-1892) Hooper and with birth years around 1855 and 1862. In public trees on Ancestry the different name variations and DoBs are often used interchangeably. My problem: Who, exactly, was my g-g-grandfather?

Charles Arthur Hooper was a son of Henry & Mary Hooper b. 13 Jun 1854. Supporting this are the Census of Canada for 1861 (Arther, 7)and 1871(Arthur, 16) which show him living with H&M; also an IGI record found on FamilySearch.org shows him born on 13 Jun 1854 to H&M.

He married Lavinia Jane Pendleton in Oct. 1875 as supported by an IGI Individual Record on FamilySearch, and the 1881 Census of Canada which shows Arthur, 26 living with Levina, 29 and Grace, 10; Charles, 3; and Roxana,1.

Lavinia died in 1881 and Charles Arthur becomes harder to locate. However, articles from the Lowell Sun (Massachusetts) concerning the 1904 murder and funeral of Mary Roxana Hooper show "her father" to be living in Fairfield, ME. The articles also mention Mary's brother Charles and refer to some of H&M's daughters as Mary's aunts.

A second individual is Charles Victor (Harris) Hooper, b. 1862. The 1871 Census shows him, age 9, living with H&M Hooper and family. The 1881 Census shows a Victor, age 19, living with the family, but his surname now appears to be Hooper.

He marries Geneva Gertrude (Vivia) Eaton in 1887c based on IGI from FamilySearch.

The 1891 Census shows Victor, 29 living with Viva, 29, and children in West Isles.

Newspaper vital stats from the PANB website show that Mrs. Victor Hooper died 18 May 1892. Another shows that Vivia G. Hooper died 19 May 1892.

Newspaper vital stats from the PANB website show that C. Victor Hooper died in Lynn, MA at the home of his brother.

In the 1900 US Census and 1901 Canadian Census the children of Charles Victor and Vivia can be found living with different Hooper and Eaton families.

A lingering question: an IGI record on FamilySearch shows a Charles Edward Hooper born to H&M on 11 May 1856. In searching for my g-g-grandfather in the 1900 US Census I found a Charles A. Hooper boarding in Lowell, MA (the same general area that both his children were living as well as some siblings), but the birth month and year are May 1856, not Jun 1854. Also he is shown as single, not widowed.

Does anyone know who this Charles b. May 1856 might be?

Who were Charles Harris' birth parents?

Comments or corrections?

I have included all the sources mentioned above on my family tree which is public. Feel fre to reference it.

-Nancy

For me it will be genealogically oriented, and I am doing my homework ahead of time as to the PNAB. But suggestions for absolutely anything like restaurants, internet issues, side trips, etc will be greatly appreciated...things Americans might not think of. Thank you. Debbie

Who are the parents & former spouse of Dr. Henry VALANTINE's wife Dorothy (Saint Andrews area)

I am seeking information about Dorothy "Dora" Murchie who was born in NB March 1820. Her name was probably not Murchie to begin with but she married a male Murchie, date unknown, but I think around 1840 and had several
children by him: Jessie(female), Hugh,Alexander, and the only one I haVe a date for,Mary Helen b. Sept 22,1843. Dorothy then married Dr.Henry Valantine sometime
around 1853-54 and had twin daughters Elizabeth and Rebecca Valantine b. March 11,1855 and a son James Edward Valantine in 1859. Henry Valantine was a surgeon, working as a registrar in St. Andrews,NB in 1871 according the the NB directory for that year. In 1874 this family came to Nevada City CA where Dr. Valantine set up a medical practice, believed to be working for the Murchie gold mine there.

Certainly appreciate any help in uncovering data on these families.
Sincerely,
Carol Valantine Dugger
Napa, CA
Looking for ships in/out of port of Saint Andrews 1700-1800s

I have new information concerning the History of George Philip Bain's line who lived in Saint George and was from Fredericton originally. When our family came over from Scotland our last name was McBean, but dropped it when they were in England for a few years, prior to coming to New Brunswick, Several children were born, some unknown until a new hand written document came up from a distant relative, which talks about the name change it also mentions 2 Uncles to George P. Bain most or may have never heard of. One is Edward Bain had 3 sons, 2 daughters Janet Bain married a Robert Watt, born in London, then the next Uncle was a Charles Bain/Bean who sailed out of Saint Andrews on a ship called Hebe, He left on bad termns with his father who asked him to settle down as the family sotry goes. Charles, left never to speak to the family ever again. The document goes on to describe various people from time to time would visit the family letting them know where he was, one day a lady came by and said to the amily that he said Hi, and he was living in Bonham Texas (near the Oklahoma border)This was written in 1889, word came back a man called T.C. Bean passed away in that town leaving tons of property with no will or family to pass it on to. The town the became known as Tom Bean for Thomas Charles Bean, the Land Surveyor and Lawyer, if he is our Charles probably Thomas Bean Thomas was the mother's maiden name info on her is also needed Sarah Thomas born 1781 of Saint John though. Does anyone know where I can find info on Ships that came in and out of port in Saint Andrews? I also research TC Bean he sometimes list Washington DC as place of birth which if I was eccentric like it is said he was I would tell everyone that to. He would have been born in 1821 which fits, my copy of the document shows which son is older and younger which he fits to be in the middle of the sons. I have to believe this is my guy because how did the name Bonham from Texas reach to Fredericton to my relatives of all places, The family also said they would have no proof he was related so never bothered despite the money/land involved, seeing as in how there ended up being quite a few people showing up at the door claiming to be his relative. I first find him in Texas in 1848, which would allow enought time at sea to where he decided himself to settle down, the attitude of not listening to his father seems to fit the character of Thomas Bean If anyone else has any info they think might help me with this I'd be appreciated Thank You

Richard Matthews & Rebecca McVicar (bc1800, d/o Nevin McVicar & Lydia Cousins of Mascarene) were married in Eastport by John Burgin on 26 Dec 1821.

If they had children, I would expect they may have born 1822-1842.

In the 1851 & 1861 censuses of St. George there were five Matthews/Mathews born from 1830 to 1837, who did not seem to be living with their parents.
Richard Billings and Mary Jane Ball

Seeking information on the ancestors of Richard Billing born about 1797 in Plymouth, England and married Mary Jane Ball born about 1800 in Plymouth, Enland. Richard and Mary immigrated to St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada and their first child John James was born 1821 in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. I do not know when they entered Canada, but must have been married there prior to immigration. I also do not know who their parents were and my searching has not yielded any promising clues.
Richard died 03 December 1845 in St. Andrews and Mary Jane died 15 March 1869 in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada. They had four children: John James (my ancestor), Samuel Edmund and Mary. I believe Richard was employed in the ship building trade.
Can anyway tell me what was the most frequent port of entry for persons leaving Devon, England for the maritime provinces of Canada.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
H.D.
QUAID FAMILY OF CHARLOTTE COUNTY mid 1800's

I have a nice Civil War era photo found in an album of Charlotte County, NB pictures. It identifies the two young women as "Mary and Eliza Quaid, William's sisters". The only William Quaid I can find is one whose wife Eliza died in Baille at age 39 in 1883 (death noticed in the St Andrews Bay Pilot). Does anyone know something of this family?
Thank you.
Hello! I am looking for information and descendants of James TOWNSEND and Margaret HETHERINGTON who married in 1846 in St Andrews. Their known children were Mary, John, James, Lizzie, William, Henry Herbert, Sarah, Emma and Charles Rubin. James was a ship carpenter, son of Robert and Elizabeth ( ) Townsend, and Margaret was the daughter of William and Bridget ( ) Hetherington. I am especially interested in Margaret, born St A's in 1826. She died some time after the 1881 census when they were in St Stephens, and I would appreciate any help in finding her after that. Thank you very much. Debbie in NH

Who are the parents of Leonard C. GATCOMB, Sr born ca 1831 on Grand Manan

Fellow researchers,

I have the following query if anyone can be of assistance. In return, I'd be glad to share any information I might have as well.

I've confirmed my GATCOMB lineage to a Leonard C. GATCOMB, Sr. of Grand Manan Island, Charlotte, NB. He was born approximately in 1831 and married Emma BUCK (aka BURKE) 23 Dec 1849 in the same locale. However, this is where I get stuck in the lineage, I've been unable to confirm Leonard's parentage.

There are several GATCOMBs to be found during this time period, so I have my doubts that he was the first of his line to the island. One possibility lies with a Lemira Chaplain GATCOMB, son of Daniel GATCOMB and Mary BENSON. Is it possible that Leonard and Lemira could be the same person? The timeframe and possible birthdates are a near match, as well as middle inital. I realize I may be stretching the available evidence here, but I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. Can anyone confirm or deny?

My sincere thanks to anyone with any information or just simple guidance in this query. If any more information can be of service, I will try to help as much as I can.

Thanks, Jim

Looking for descendants of the various Maxwell families of St. George who arrived from Ireland in the mid 1800s. These families are headed by James and Rebecca Maxwell, Robert and Ellen Maxwell, John and Jane Maxwell, William and Ann/Nancy Maxwell, and Andrew and Mary Jane Maxwell. My husband is descended from the last couple. It seems likely that all five of these families were related fairly closely. Any info appreciated. Thanks.
I am posting this to the Maine (and Washington County) and
New Brunswick (and Charlotte County) websites.

I am cleaning out some of my “stuff” and have quite a bit on
The Campobello Fish Fair. A little goes back to the 1840s but most is
1893-1902 and especially the boat races (including the races prior to 1893).

I have the Silver Challenge cup that my great grandfather won in 1893. The Fish Fair
Race that year was so plagued by lack of wind that finally a winner “was declared”. The next race to find the real champion was run in a full gale. It was, according to the
Eastport Sentinel, “the most exciting race ever held in Quoddy waters”.

Since it was a big affair for the people of Calais, Eastport, Lubec, Campobello, Deer Isle, and other places it would make a great area history project.

If you are interested contact me at oj62@tds.net

John Preston
Hi everyone, I am hoping somebody out there can help me. I am doing research on my family who came from New Brunswick, but I am not sure if that is where they originated from. Well my great grandfather was John CLARK he was born November 19, 1844 in New Brunswick, He married Charlotte KITCHING on 8 May 1870 in Charlotte County. They had 9 children, Sarah, John H, Mark B., William J., Charlotte E.M., Durrel L., Alexander J.C., Florence E., and Harrison W. Most of they family migrated to British Columbia and some went into the USA, and some stayed there in NB. I would like to find anyone who knows anything on this family, where John's parent were from and who they were and if he had any siblings.
