Mother of Amanda b1873

For a bit of a twist I know, or think I know, the father and am trying to find the mother...

On the 1901 NB census John NOLAIS gives his immigration date as 1875. The story goes that he was born in Jersey, CI, was employed as a Seaman and jumped ship during a trip to NB. I have successfully researched most of his family in Jersey and New Brunswick--with one exception--a daughter Amanda b1873 in NB.

John Nolais married in Blissfield,NB in 1881. On the 1881 census he is single and living in a boarding house in Northumberland Co. His future wife is also single and living a few houses away(no sign of Amanda with either of them).

On the 1891 census the couple is married and their oldest child is a daughter "Mandy" b1873. John and Amanda are CofE, his wife and other children are RC. I have located a CofE confirmation record that says she was baptized RC-Chatham but I have not found a baptism record.

According to pay records from Jersey CI, John received his last payment in 1873. I suspect that the 1873 trip may have been to NB where he met Amanda's mother. I further speculate that he learned of Amanda on a return trip in 1875--prompting him to remain in NB.

I have been unable to locate a likely Amanda on the 1881 census for Northumberland County and, because of the geography and the connection to the sea, I have turned my attention to Gloucester County. Further complicating things--she disappeared before the 1901 census, as mysteriously as she appeared, and was never heard from again (although family know of her existance and refer to her as a sibling).

So, I'm looking for an 8 year old Amanda living with a family that she doesn't seem to belong to (I'm thinking with her single Mother or as a step-child, orphan or lodger). I'd also be interested in learning where she ended up but I have even less to go on for that.

John Ferguson (1814-1888)

Seeking information on the family of John FERGUSON (born circa 1814 in ? Scotland; died 21 Aug 1888, Bathurst, Gloucester, NB). His wife, Mary MUNRO was born 31 Dec 1823 in New Brunswick, and died 18 Nov 1918 in Bathurst, Gloucester, NB. They are both buried in Old St Luke's Presbyterian Cemetery in Gloucester, NB.

I found a "Family Group Record" on the FamilySearch website that lists their children as:
John Ferguson
Alex. Rankin Ferguson
R. Charles Ferguson
Francis Ferguson (born Oct 1859)
Munro Ferguson
A. Gilmour Ferguson
Mary Ferguson

The only one of the children I know anything more on is Francis Percy FERGUSON who married Barbara Auld RENNIE. She was born March 1865 in New Brunswick, but the marriage occured in the US.

If anyone else is researching this family I would love to exhange information.
Reiche/Raiche-starting with a stranded seaman?

Hi all and first off thanks for all the help and direction I have been given by all you folks. Really helps lost children like myself, stuck on the West Coast, far away from our roots and beginnings.

Although this is a bit of a different take, it still has to do with the family I am researching in the area. (Lanteigne/McGraw)

I am unfamilar with the Reiche surname. Since it was believed to be a maiden name of one of my relatives who was married twice I have little info about it. Facts seem to have vanished with time. However it was on the death record as the maiden name of my great granfather's mother so it merits some research for sure.

I was told by elderly family members that the surname originates in the area (not clear if Gloucester in general of if including Gaspe area too)from a seaman who was stranded in the area during the "French/English" wars. This is all on word of mouth so it is less than clear. I was told there may be a German or Jewish connection to the name.
(also does anyone know about the french/english wars, timeframe etc)

The person I seek information on is Marie Reich, she was born about July 6 1847. She married Philias Lanteigne before 1891. She and Philias are on the 1891 censes in Chatham Northumberland as inn/hotel keeper. Philias ( originally from Caraquet) who seems to have given the info on the censes, states she was born in Quebec. Marie married a McGraw or McGrath before she married Philias. She had at least two children with the McGraw last name, Allen and Robert born in the late 1870's, early 1880s. So I assume her marriage to the McGraw was around then.

Also is the surname Raiche another spelling of Reich? Is there any connection between these two surnames. So far Gloucester is the only county I can find these surnames, anywhere else I might look? I have found some in Quebec but my french is less than good and with such a gap in time frames I don't know who to follow. Was hoping I could find Marie'd dad to begin with or at least a likely family she may have come from.

Any info or tips would be of greatest interest. Have found a few records in Gloucester but not able to pinpoint a founding father. Was wondering if Quebec has any connection to the Gloucester Reich/Raiche, and if so how.

Oh, and one last piece of family lore, it was said that Marie's grandfather father married ( or at least had children) with a native woman and that one of these children was Marie's father.

Again, any insight would most interesting to hear.

Thanks again for all the help

A

Am desperately trying to locate information regarding Cornelius Wiseman and his wife Ann Wilson who evidently resided in Bathurst sometime after 1831 when Corn was born. Ann's father was an engineer who was in part responsible for the building of a bridge in Bathurst.Cornelius was the paymaster at the railway and was evidently murdererd on Hallowe'en night by someone who may have thought he had the payroll on his person. The story goes he was hit on the head with a rail tie spike. Cornelius was my gg grandfather, My gfather's name was also Cornelius, Cornelius Stillman. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.

Wilson Family of Miscou

I saw a post under the surname Wilson made by Doris Power in 2001. She had some dates and information on the family of Charles Wilson of Aberdeen whose son Andrew Wilson and wife Jessy Gavan moved to Miscou Island and raised a family there. I know one of Andrew's descendants married a Power and presume Doris is related. I emailed her, but she is no longer at that email address. If anyone has any information on the Wilson family or knows Doris Power, I would be very interested in hearing from you. Thank you!

Does anyone know what the earliest census recorded is for this area? I am trying to find out where Pheobe wilson, who married a Hugh Chalmers came from and who she belonged to before she married Hugh. I don't even seem to know Phoebe's date of birth which might help. She was related to my gg grandfather, cornelius wiseman, as he was married to Anne wilso, who disappeared after Cornelius was killed. I am trying all possible leads in the effort to locate living relatives who might know something of the story. I am frustrated, but cannot just yet, give up!

She was born , of Johnny and Obeline (Robichaud) Robichaud, 1880-12-12.

Were Louis' parents Louis & Constance (Drysdale) Gauthier and, how is a Maggie Gauthier related to this Louis & Constance?

It appears that Louis' (married to Constance) was 1 of 8-9 children whose parents were Louis and Marie (Chiasson) Gauthier and his parents were Nicolas & Catherine (Gerard) Gauthier - is this correct? Were there other siblings of this Louis (Marie) and Nicolas? And, who were Nicolas' ancestors and are they traced back to Port Royal? Are there connections to Prince Edward Island Gauthier's?

Any information on the Gauthier's of Miscou Island will be welcomed and appreciated. Thank you.

Joseph Wilson/Mary Cowan of Miscou Island

I am looking for information on the marriage of Joseph Wilson and Mary Cowan of Miscou Island. I have looked through many registers and have been unable to find their marriage. I am also interested in the birth/baptism record of Mary Cowan. I only have access to the Catholic registers so far. I know Joseph was Catholic, but perhaps Mary was not and they married in her church. I am hoping there is a Wilson or Cowan expert out there who can help me. Thanks.

He also had served as superintendent of
the School for the Blind at
Janesville, superintendent of the State Home for Woman at Taycheedah near Fond
du Lac, Winnebago State
Hospital, Oshkosh, and the Southern Colony, at Union Grove.
His post at the State School for Boys was held during an investigation for the
school in 1948 after his
retirement. He served without pay --even paying his own hotel bills -- because
he was on a state pension.
Mr. Murphy had been lauded on many occasions both public and private for his
high ideals of public service.
He was widely know throughout the state because of his various activates with
the welfare department.
The Capital Times
Tuesday July 9, 1957 Page 5
LUKE MURPHY
Funeral services for Luke F. After that he served on the Parole Board. He started state service on
April 11, 1910.
While warden at Wisconsin State Prison there was a riot on January 15, 1944.
It lasted several days. It was
not until February 3rd that inmates were released from their cells in small
groups to return to work in the
shops.
I don't have any dates on these but he started state services at the Boys
School, worked at Winnebago State
Hospital, the Wisconsin State Reformatory and was the head of the Probation
and Parole Bureau for many
years. MURPHY IN STATE SERVICE 34 YEARS
Special to The Leader-News
Madison-With 34 years of work for the state behind him, Warden L. F. Murphy of
the state prison at Waupun
ranks second among all state institution heads in length of service, according
to a bulletin from the state
department of public welfare.
Murphy has served in almost all the key positions in the institutional set-up,
and at various times was
identified with seven institutions. He has also been director of educational
activities in the institutions.
WISCONSIN CLIPPING BUREAU MILWAUKEE JOURNAL MAY 30, 1946
LUKE MURPHY AS WARDEN
On Nov. 15, 1943, Luke F. Murphy, already a veteran in the service of the
state welfare department, was
named warden of Waupun prison. On June 9, this year, he will relinquish the
post he has held with
distinction for two and a half years. On June 10, John C. Burke, who has been
in the armed services for
three years, will resume the wardenship.
Luke Murphy has done a magnificent job in his period at Waupun. He took over
at a most trying time in the
history of that ancient penitentiary. The morale of the prison had been
seriously undermined during the
irresponsible regency of Welfare Director Frank C. Klode. Warden Burke's
immediate successor, former
Deputy Warden William Hinkamp, had let dissatisfaction increase. When Warden
Murphy came
in, the institution was in ferment. In the middle of January, 1944, there was
a sitdown strike of prisoners.
Warden Murphy took a firm stand. The strike was soon ended. The difficult task
of restoring a good feeling
in the institution was prosecuted with vigor and understanding. Today the
morale at Waupun is remarkably
high. The prison, from the standpoint of control and rehabilitory program, is
in better shape then at any time
in its history, and the way has been paved for further advances in all
directions.
The people of Wisconsin owe a lot to Luke Murphy for what he has done in these
two and a half years. They
will wish him satisfaction and happiness in his new work on the parole
board-work for which his earlier
parole connections and his recent wardenship have ideally prepared him.
WISCONSIN CLIPPING BUREAU-MILWAUKEE SENTINEL DECEMBER 22, 1943
MURPHY WINS WARDEN POST Mrs. Simpson New Prison Aid
Madison, Dec 21-UPA.
W. F.
Murphy as warden of the state prison, and of Mrs. Marcia Simpson as assistant
superintendent of the prison
for women and the industrial home for women.
Murphy has been acting warden. Appointment as permanent warden was held up
until results of the civil
service examination, given last week, were received. Murphy ranked first in
the field of three with a mark of
90.66. He will serve until John Burke returns from military service.
Notes for CAROLINE MASON:
THE CAPITAL TIMES, THURSDAY 14, 1961 PAGE 24
MRS.

Looking for information on the Joseph Roy that settled in Petit Rocher. I have seen two conflicting trees. One has Joseph Roy descending from Phillipe Roy and the other tree has Joseph as the son from his brother Francois Roy. Both brothers did have a Joseph Roy as a son. Our line goes from a Josph Roy and ? wife to Placide Roy to Mathilde Roy (and Joseph Melanson.)

Philias Lanteigne mid 1800s

I am looking for a Philias Lanteigne.

I do not have much info on him other than his is the name on death and marriage records for my great grandfather Jeremiah Lanteigne born Dec 1 1884, as his father.

I have spent a fair amount of time following the wrong leads (never, never go on word of mouth even if it is all you have!) However that research lead to a basic understandig of the Lanteignes in the area.

The only Philias I could find with my search are ones who do not seem to relate.

My Philias was born around the mid 1800s in NB. Either Caraquet area, Gloucester County or Chatham Loggieville area Northumberland county.

Philias married twice as far as I know. The first time I am not sure who to, the second time to Marie (Mary) Reich McGraw/Mcgrath. Mary is on the 1901 and 1911 census records in Chatham/Loggieville already a widow. So Philias died before 1901 but not before 1883-4.

I know Marie and Philias had at least three children, perhaps some are from a previous marriage but I know Jeremiah's parents were Mary and Philias. Siblings of Jeremiah include Robert b Sept 27 1881. Allen b May 29 1879 (with wife Kate b Nov 28 1877 on 1901 census living with Mary) and of course Jeremiah (recorded as Jerry) b dec 1 1884.

Philias may have been a school teacher, it is said he drowned not sure if here or in Miramichi.

Any help or direction would be most welcomed.

A

Robert McIntosh born 1774 in Perthshire, Scotland

Looking for any info on Robert McIntosh born 1774 in Perthshire, Scotland. His father was William McIntosh. Supposedly William was closely connected to one of the Clan Chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh. Anne Barry, grand daughter of Robert's son William, passed down that Robert's father William was the son of Robert Mackintosh and Anne MacQueen. Another relative thought that William was a grandson of Alexander Mackintosh (d. 1781 Newburgh, Fife)whose oldest son Aeneas later became Chief. Alexander's 2nd son, William was baptized 11 July 1756 in Newburgh, Fife. Obviously there have been some oral traditions that Robert had some family connection to the Chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh, I'm looking for other relatives/descendants that would have additional information or records that can help clear this matter up.

I am especially looking for a family bible, either one that belonged to Robert and his wife Agness or their children.

I have searched and searched and have not been able to find a suitable baptism for Robert. In Ira Beattie's research he says that Robert was born 3 October 1774. Robert's tombstone in New Mills, Restigouche, New Brunswick says that Robert was a native of Logierait, Perthshire. Also his name is spelled M'Intosh.

If Robert had a close connection with the Chiefs it is possible that Robert was baptized as an Episcopalian because the Chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh were Jacobite supporters and many of them were Episcopalian.

Robert married Agness Bartie in Errol, Perthshire on December 5, 1802.

Their children are as follows: William (1803 Errol), Robert (1805, Errol), Joseph (1808 Craiglochie), Hugh (1809), John (1810 Craiglochie), David (1812 Kilspindie), James (1814 Kilspindie), Alexander Saunders (Lochmill), Peter (1818 Lochmill), Agnes (1820 Lochmill), Euphemia (1823 Lochmill), George (1824 Lochmill), Thomas (1827 Lochmill).

Robert and Agnes emigrated to Restigouche county, New Brunswick in June of 1833, William and David emigrated in 1839, Alexander in May of 1833 and all of the other children, except not sure where Joseph and Hugh ended up.

Robert died Dec 12, 1846 and Agness died in 1863. They are buried in New Mills, Restigouche, New Brunswick.

Any help on Robert's parentage and lineage would be appreciated as well as any other info and family records.

Hi all, just putting out some feelers for info regarding a search I am working on.

I am having some trouble finding info regarding some people in my past and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

I am looking for info on my great-great grand parents. The trail is somewhat overgrown.

My great grandfather was Jeremiah Lanteigne. He is recorded with his mother (already widowed) in the 1901 censes for Chatham Northumberland. He was born Dec. 1 1884.

His mother's name was Mary (Marie) Reich (Raiche)/McGraw (McGrath). I have found some records for a Mary Raiche/McGraw who married a Prudent Lanteigne on July 26 1876 in Tracadie. I have found records with Marie entering marriage with James Jaques Raiche in about 1871. James died on June 9th 1874 and is buried in the Cimetiere des Fonadeurs in Tracadie. There are also records for a Sara Lanteigne aged 7 years who is buried in the same cemetery, child of Marie Anne McGraw and Prudent Lanteigne.

I have searched PNBA for records and not found anything of use. Family lore tells me Jeremiah's father was Fidele Lanteigne, not Prudent. In order to be sure I am following the right leads I am looking for information which may show me this Marie Raiche and Prudent Lanteigne are really my great-great grandparents.

Not living on the East Coast myself my research is limited for the time being to online efforts. Does anyone have any tips of where I can look other than PNBA. Also, due to the extreme amount of help provided to me from responses from this message board in other branches of my tree I am aware that many good historical books exist for the New Brunswick area. Does anyone know where and how I might obtain a title list of such books and how I might purchase any useful ones?

Thanks so much for all your help

Jean D. McGRATH/McGRAW b. ca 1833/5 is shown in the 1881 census with a wife "Helene" b. ca 1831. Then in the 1901 census his wife is listed as "Louise" b. 24 Dec 1850. Am I correct in assuming his first wife died and he remarried? If so when did Helene die and what is her maiden name? What is Louise's maiden name? Thanks.
Suzanne

This leads me to believe the she was previously married. I have her father listed as John, but am not 100% sure if this is correct. I have no listing for her mother.

I'm looking for info on John Boyle and his wife Jane Campbell both born abt 1800 in Ireland. They immigrated to NB and settled in Bathurst. Not known when or where in Ireland they emigrated from, or if they married in NB or Ireland. I believe their oldest child, James was born abt 1829 in Bathurst. My g-grandfather, Hugh Boyle, was born 06 May 1844 in Bathhurst. He married Mary White (b. 03 Dec 1850 in Bathurst) on 03 Sep 1872. They had 8 children in Bathurst. They immigrated to Seattle, WA, USA, following their oldest son, Francis J. Boyle (my g-father), who immigrated in 1901 to Seattle.

Joncas in Newcastle

Hi everyone,

I am researching the Joncas family that established in Newcastle ca 1865.

The gentlemans was Phillip (Joseph-Phylias) Joncas born Grande-Rivière, Gaspé county, on sep 18 1835 (Joseph and Marguerite-Monique Bourdages).
From the 1871 census, the transcrition named him Joneas Phillip married to a Harriet wit 7 kids. See page 108 of NBGS Miramichi Branch.
I would be interested in knowing if the marriage took place in the Miramichi area and when.

The 1881 census (transcription) named him Junco Philip, he is a widow with 10 kids. See district 35, sub-district B, div 3, page 28, Household 116. I do not know if he remarried.

The 1901 census (trancription) named him Jonies Phillip, a widow living with his sister Charlotte and 2 kids. Charlotte was born also in Grande-Rivière on dec 15 1849. See District 19, sub-district J-3, p. 4 household 30. I do not know if Charlotte married.

From the NB archives, I know at least one of his sons James married and lived in Newcastle after 1901.

Phillip died in 1909, Charlotte died in 1929, in theNewcasle area.

Is it possible to get a copy of Phillip marriage to Harriet? Is it possible to get a copy of their death certificate? Is there any Joncas still living in the Miamichi area?

Thanks a lot

Jean-Pierre Joncas, ing.
