Hi Colleen,
Without birth years and wives it's impossible to be sure if I have the right one, but here is one Michael MORIARTY that came to Saint John. I don't know if he dies in the alms house/hospital or not..

There is a John C. Moriarty (age 68)in the 1881 census with wife Hannah (60), but he stayed and died in Saint John in 1890. He was Methodist. Some of his children were Edward (24), Clarence (15)and Lena (17). If you think he's yours, there is more on him but I don't think he's yours. He was a furniture upholsterer. I presume yours were Catholic.
