Classification: Query
Surnames: Thompson
I don't have anything right on hand for Jessie or Edmund Ernest but will see what I can find.. as to the rest... I am still a bit sketchy on who was the painter George but I think the family could end up something like this...

Descendants of ARCHIBALD THOMPSON born about 1691 Ulster, Ireland, died about 1776, married UNKNOWN, born between 1690 and 1695, probably in Ireland, he made First Spinning Foot-Wheel In New England.

Children of ARCHIBALD THOMPSON and UNKNOWN are:

1) JAMES THOMPSON
2) ELIZABETH THOMPSON
3) ANNA THOMPSON
4) ROBERT THOMPSON, born about 1723
5) JENNET THOMPSON, born about 1725, probably in Abington, Plymouth, Mass.
6) THOMAS THOMPSON, born about 1730
7) ARCHIBALD THOMPSON born about 1737, Bridgewater, Plymouth, Mass. Died after 18 AUG 1815 in Five Islands, Nova Scotia, Canada; Archibald Thompson served in the French Indian War with Wolfe in Quebec 1755-1757 and was given the following land grants in Nova Scotia: Truro 1761, Little Dyke 1775, Londonderry Twp Grant and 5 Islands 1784-85, (Gerrish Grant), King County Grant 1813;
8) JANE THOMPSON, born 1742, Bridgewater, Plymouth, Mass.
837-838. Claim of Archibald Thompson & James Park, late of Tryon Co. [N.C. August 29.]

Claimt. ARCH. THOMPSON being sworn saith: He was at Niagara in '83. Is a native of Scotland, came to America in '73, joined the Indians in '75, served during the War. He & James Park settled together on John Harper's Land in Tryon Co. Never had a Lease or Deed, were to have had if the disturbance had not come on. They had Cleared a little before the disturbances, thinks about 12 acres in the whole before they left, had built a Log House, had 2 horses, 5 horned Cattle, Cloathes, furniture. Says they joined Capt. Macdonell first in Aug., 1777, joined the Indians under Brant in '78. [55]
James Parker, Claimt., says he came from Scotland with Archibald Thompson. Settled as Partner in Tryon Co. Went from Home with him & served in the Indian Departmt. They took up 100 acres, had not pd. anything, had not any Deed or Lease. They were to have paid 20£. They Cleared 12 acres before they went away, most of it before ye Rebellion broke out. They had 2 horses & a Colt, 4 Cows & some young Cattle, the Rebels got them all.
JOHN CHISHOLM, Wits.: Knew both Claimts., they went off with Witness & several other Loyalists. They served in the Indian Departmt. They had Land from Col. Harper in Tryon Co. Thinks they Cleared 13 acres. He saw 2 Horses, 3 or 4 Cows, and altogether a nice Stock. Capt. Brant Certifies to their Services & that they acted as Volunteers. [Good men to be allowed a little.]
ARCHIBALD THOMPSON married MARTHA ROBINSON, born before April 13, 1740, East Bridgewater, Bristol, Mass., and died after August 18, 1815, Nova Scotia, they were married October 15, 1761, in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Mass. They were married 1719 Mass.

Child of ARCHIBALD THOMPSON and MARTHA ROBINSON is:

1) ELIZABETH THOMPSON, born June 3, 1771 in Economy, Nova Scotia, died February 25, 1842, Perry, Washington, Maine, she married OTIS LINCOLN, born September 17, 1763, Hingham, Plymouth, Mass. They were married about 1789 in Nova Scotia, they had 10 children, see SPOONER GENERATIONS DATABASE.

CULBERT) (**BESSIE BYERS age 18, b NB, CofE, also noted in household 1881 Census)

(Additional Notes - John THOMPSON and his brother were crossing the Richibucto River, Kent Co., a heavy gale of wind blowing at the time, the canoe in which they were taking passage upset and the brother was unfortunately drowned, Mr. THOMPSON himself having a very narrow escape. 18 May 1841)

Interesting story on the death of James Taylor – Source - County : Northumberland, Place : Chatham Newspaper : The Gleaner and Northumberland Schediasma – published on July 7, 1851,
Richibucto (Kent Co.) Monday eve. 30th ult., James TAYLOR, Carpenter of brig "Employ", Capt. THOMPSON while going off the vessel in a boat from the shore, fell out of same and was drowned. He was seen immediately before he fell overboard, standing up and pushing the boat from the block. The boats belonging to the vessel were instantly manned and pulled towards the spot. Two of his fellow seaman did not wait, but plunged into the water and nobly exerted themselves to rescue a fellow being from a watery grave. He was at once taken ashore; hopes were entertained that his life was not yet extinct. Medical assistance was sent for and in a few minutes Drs. McLaren and Pallen were in attendance. He was carried into the engine room of Desbrisay's steam mill, it being the warmest and convenient place that could be procured. A number of blankets were obtained heated warm and placed around him while several persons were engaged in rubbing him and applying fresh blankets. Dr. McLaren, finding that these means were fruitless, applied as a last resort the Galvanic Battery, but sad to say, all effects proved ineffectual. The vital spark had already fled and his spirit taken its flight to another world. He was a native of Aberdeen Scotland, age 29 and left a wife. His remains were interred in the English burial ground attended by his Captain and a large number of sailors and other persons.

(Ancestry notes: query posted about these land transactions:
JAMES THOMPSON EDWARD MUNDY AND ISABELLA DEED C-2 730 1884 RICH. VILLAGE

JANE THOMPSON EDMUND POWELL DEED R 504 1867 RICHIBUCTO
JANE THOMPSON SARAH POWELL ESTATE DEED C-2 457 1884 RICHIBUCTO

Note: 1881 Census – Sarah Powell, daughter of Sylvanus, born 1837, died 1884, Edmund Powell lives next door, Edward and Isabell Mundy live with her….. this appears to be the Sarah mentioned in the deeds but, what is Sarah’s connection to Jane Thompson? In fact, can anyone confirm this is Jane wife of John Thompson or if the transactions are for someone else and if there is any James connected to them (John and Jane (Ostle) Thompson)?

Reply received from sjc58: Jane's mother was Mary Foster Ostle. Mary's sister Ann married Edmund Powell in 1838. Edmund's brother Sylvanus and wife Sarah had a daughter Sarah who died in 1884. Edward Munday was married to Isabella Powell, who is a daughter of Sylvanus Powell. I have not come across a James Thompson in my research of George and Ann Thompson and their descendents.)

(Researchers Notes: I do not know what business he was doing at Chatham.. possibly Harness Making which would make sense if he had gone insane as they may have been using dangerous chemicals such as mercury to speed up the tanning process... at least, I've read that they used those solutions - specifically mercury was used when making hats and hence we have the term "mad as a hatter" because of the toxic effects to the nervous system which we know today leads to developmental delays in children and so on... so I wouldn't hold anything against Matthewman if he went insane because of exposure to mercury used in his employment.)
