The Barclay situation for northern New Brunswick is interesting. You have Thomas of Addington, Robert of Bathurst, William of Durham, and Hugh of Durham?. We know that William Barclay was born 15 April 1815 Scotland. We know that his parents are Hugh (1769) and Jane (1770) Barclay. Their tombstone says they are natives of Ayrshire. William marries Agnes McIntosh (dau. of Robt. and Agnes McIntosh) on 17 July 1837 in/of Addington - witness Robt. Barclay. Robert (1801, 1807?) marries Catherine Fletcher on 25 Oct 1839, both of Bathurst. Robert apparently dies after 1861, but before 1871. Hugh Barclay, born abt. 1819 NB?, marries Ann McIntosh and seems to reside in the Durham parish. Thomas as you know married 16 Oct. 1834 to Sarah Gerrard. There are also, Mary, Elizabeth, and Margaret that I believe marry in Bathurst. There are two possibilities here, either there are two Barclay families in the area or there is just one. Here's the thing, if you look at William Barclay's Obituary, it says that he's the last one of a family of 7 and that he's a native of Glasgow. Does the 7 include the parents or is that just children? Anyhow, it says that the family of 7 came to Canada. I think that it's possible that they are all children of Hugh and Jane. I think I've found baptismal entries for almost all of them, except Thomas. But is 1800 or 1801 the right date for him? The 1891 census says 1812, so? I found William's baptismal entry, father: Hugh Barclay of Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, who is a weaver. Then I found a Robert for 1807, father is Hugh Barclay of Dalry, Ayr, Scotland, weaver, of Kirktoun. What's interesting is that the 1861 census says Robert was a Tailor. Hugh seems to have been born in NB after the family immigrated. I think what we need, is a male descendant of each line, Thomas, Robert, William, and Hugh and through YDNA, we will be able to tell if these four lines are related. If anyone wants to discuss further this family, please email me, Doyle McIntosh at dgmcint AT
