Hi, looking for info on David Rupert, can not find out who his parents are or when he died, I have searched all over the internet and the last trace I have found is in the 1901 census St. John Co. Lansdowne, he is listed as being 64, born in saint John 1836, wife was Carrie. I have searched all thru the records of Christopher Rupert's family in Norton NB and can find no links to the Saint John Rupert's. Any advice on where to go from here? Much appreciated!

He was born 1898 Aberchirder Banffshire Scotland and last address before departure was Southview Terrace Aberchirder (aka Foggieloan). He travelled with Miss H WILSOnN age 31 of 75 Leslie Terreace Aberdeen and Bert WILSON age 17.

My Great Grandmother Mary Millinder was one of the home children. Mary arrived on the ship S.S Lake Champlain July 14th, 1905 at the Quebec Port from Liverpool at the age of 13. With Mrs.Forster's party from Bristol Emigration Society heading to St. John N.B

We are not sure of who her parents were but believe she may have had some siblings 2 brothers, Frank and Alfred as well as a sister, Alice. We have no idea if they were also home children as there is no record of it yet. So we believe they remained in England, possibly Bristol area.

Any imformation on the Millinder family would greatly be appreciated. Thank you

The Johnson siblings from Sligo

Does anyone have any information on six siblings who immigrated in the spring of 1847 on the Aeolus from Sligo to St. John? The family name was Johnson and the given names were, Catherine 19, Thomas 16, Robert 13, Charles 9, Margaret 7 and Eliza 4 1/2. No adult seems to have made the crossing with them. The children probably arrived sick and all but Catherine seem to show discharge dates from a hospital. I believe that Robert married and lived in St. George, but I can find nothing about the others.

Seeking some answers

Hi

My name is Wayne

My grandmother, was born Bessie Ewing, in 1898 daughter of Walter Ewing and Rebecca Jane Yeomans.

On February 2nd of 1916 she married my grandfather
Roy Frederick (Connell) McKay one of three children to Carrie McKay and Michael Connell.

Carrie and Michael were married, but for reasons I am unaware of, my grandfather chose to live as McKay
and not Connell.

Bessie was a strong woman who had very strong family values; she also was unable to have children.
My grandfather always loved children and wanted to have a family.
He used to sit on the front door to his home in Saint John on pay day and pass out candy to all the children in the neighborhood; he was a very kind and generous man.

Together Roy (Buckshot) McKay and Bessie raised four children, The true nature of how they came to have four children for the most part is still a mysterious family secret. There are stories that they were fathered by Roy, and then told by Bessie to get out there and bring them home, there are also stories that they were once unwanted children of other parents. What ever the truth is the four children were raised by Roy and Bessie as their own.

They were:
Peggy (Mary Margaret Comeau)
Jack (Paul Gerald) and Joe (Peter Frederick) Dempsey (twins)
Ronald Roy (Charles Allison Mallette)

Ronald was raised all of his life knowing only that he was the brother of Peggy, Jack and Joe and the son of Bessie and Roy McKay.

However it was found out in later years that Ron was born Jan 15 1926 and lived at 10 Elgin St. in Saint John NB.
his name Charles Allison Mallette was changed.
As were the other 3 children, they were all brought in and raised by Bessie and Roy as true member of the McKay family.

Ron McKay, legally changed his name to Ronald Roy McKay in the hospital just prior to his death, he never found out who his birth mother was nor any other information about his origins he really didn’t care

I’d like to know the truth …

Thank you for reading,
and thank you for any assistance you can give

W.D. McKay
THE LOST VALLEY - Portland and Saint John, N.B.

Hello. Recently I began publishing a history-genealogy
column on Blogspot. It is called THE LOST VALLEY and is
sub-titled:
"History, stories and genealogy of the great urban-rail corridor once shared by the Town of Portland and the City of Saint John, N.B."
I am looking for biographical profiles, photos, documents
and the like to use in reconstructing an entire urban community which existed for 120 years and was then destroyed in the urban renewal campaign of the 1960s-70s.
Thousands of families were displaced, and many are scattered
all over North America.
(It's all explained in the Blog.) If your family lived
in the LOST VALLEY, perhaps we can share their story.
Find me at http://thelostvalley.blogspot.com/

LONDON in Portland, Saint John

In hopes that some kind soul can help me break through this brick wall:

My husband's great grandmother Alice London Grant was born according to the 1901 census on April 22 1865 in New Brunswick. The 1881 census shows her living with her mother Catharine London, a widow, in Portland.
I've searched the NB archives online databases for any other information on this family, without success. Alice's marriage registration to Albert Grant gives her father's name as John London, and her mother as Catherine _. Catherine does not appear on the 1901 or 1911 census, so I'm presuming she died before 1901.
Just to confuse matters, McAlpine's directory for 1871 shows a C. London, widow of "William", living in Saint John.

I'm pretty stumped here.

I've written to Nova Scotia archives (where Alice died in 1901/02) for a copy of her death certificate - hoping it may have her mother's maiden name on it.

I would LOVE to know Catherine's maiden name, and a place/dob for John and Catherine. But as they say, if wishes were horses . . .

I live in Ottawa, and can reciprocate with lookups at the National Archives, if needed.

Thank you for any information, or a nudge in the right direction.

Patricia in Ottawa
Robertson, George Morison, James, Alexander, etc.

25 Jul 1999 (moved from old site)

I'm planning to visit St. John in mid September to search for family members if they still live in the area and I wanted to try to make some connections before my trip. My name is George Humphreys Robertson and my great great grandfather George Morison Robertson came to Hawaii in 1844 via St. John where his uncle James Robertson and older brothers Alexander and James lived and had a ship building business. George was born in Huntley, Scotland.

His brother Alexander married Anne Partelow in May, 1833 and their children were John, Annie (Ewing), Mary, Alexander, Isabel, Helen (Chipman), and Margaret (Raymond).

His brother James married Margaret Nisbet in 1840 and their three children were Thomas Nisbet, William George, and James Walker. Tom's home was "Athole Cottage," Westfield on the slopes of the St. John River. William had a home at Mahogany and St. John.

I have additional names of descendents of the above, some of whom apparently lived in New Brunswick. If you could help me with some kind of lead toward connecting with Robertsons in the area I would be most grateful. I have a lot of information about Robertsons in Hawaii who descended from my great great grandfather and would be happy to share it.

Aloha
Fairns, Chapman and Hennigar in Saint John

My gg-grandparents, Francis Fairn, born in Annapolis Co., NS, about 1822, and Frances Sayre "Fanny" Chapman, (date and place of birth unknown. but likely not in Annapolis Co.) had children William Henry Fairn (my g-grandfather), born July 15, 1847, in Saint John, and James Hennigar Fairn, born November 1, 1849, also in Saint John.

"Fanny" Fairn died January 27, 1854, in Saint John. Francis Fairn, a ship's carpenter, drowned not long after his wife's death - perhaps in Saint John Harbour or perhaps at sea, the stories differ. The two children were taken to Nova Scotia where William Henry was raised by his father's cousin, Benjamin Fairn of Moschelle, and James was apparently raised in Lawrencetown by another Fairn relative.

In 1874, by then working with the Digby-Yarmouth, NS railroad, James Fairn married Annie Ryan of Marshalltown, Digby Co. In 1876, James died in a railroad accident near Weymouth, NS. James and Annie had at least one child, born a few months after James died, but, according to my grandfather in an interview recorded in 1962, there were two children, a boy and a girl.

James, Annie and family had been living in Hebron, Yarmouth Co. According to my grandfather, not too long after James died, Annie moved to Saint John with the children and later gave them up to be raised by others. My grandfather said the boy was raised by "Pastor Hennigar", a clergyman, but he did not know what became of the girl. I have no name for either child.

I am looking for the following information:

1. the date and place of birth and parents of Frances Sayre "Fanny" Chapman;
2. particulars of the marriage of Francis Fairn and Frances Chapman;
3. particulars of the death of Francis Fairn;
4. anything known about "Pastor Hennigar";
5. anything regarding the children of James Fairn and Annie Ryan and descendants of those children.

Dummer / Smith / Rhodes Families of St. John, NB

I'm seeking info about a small group of my Canadian ancestors in the vicinity of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. Although they had strong ties to St. John, they also appear intermittently in Nova Scotia, Maine and Massachusetts.

My earliest known ancestor is Thomas Dummer (c.1850-?) of Maine and Nova Scotia, husband of Elizabeth Frances Gray (1850-1940) of St. John. Elizabeth Frances Gray was the daughter of Thomas Gray and Elizabeth Simpson, who may have immigrated to Canada from Ireland.

Thomas and Elizabeth had 5 children:

1. William Edward Dummer (1871-1906)
2. Edward Dummer (1873-?)
3. Charles Arthur Dummer (1875-1916) m. Ella Hiltz (1877-1941)
a. Son = Alfred Ronald Dummer (1897-1975)
b. Dau = Unknown
4. Marion F. "May" Dummer (1878-1954) m. William R. Rhodes
a. Son = James Clinton Rhodes (1908-1992)
5. Ida Blanche Dummer (1879-c.1938) m. William Smith
a. Dau = Marion Smith (c.1909-?)

I am a direct descendant of Thomas and Elizabeth and would greatly appreciate any scrap of information about them, the other individuals listed above, and/or the families of Dummer, Gray, Hiltz, Rhodes, or Smith in the general vicinity of New Brunswick. Thank you!
They had at least two sons, Alex and Charles. I don't have dates of birth or death for either one, but their son, Charles, was born in 1882. Any leads will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Connor family

I am researching the Connor family in New Brunswick, most of whom lived in Saint John. The first Connor in my family to arrive in New Brunswick may have been John Connors from Ireland in late 1700s or early 1800s. The surname then seems to change to Connor without an "s". My father (Harry Pache Connor) moved to Ontario. His father (William Harry Connor) moved to British Columbia. His father may have been John Connor.

Hi,

Thelma (born 1896) and Jessie (born 1898) were daughters of John Leslie and Alice Maud (nee Wilson) McLennan.
According to an obituary of one of the sons of John and Alice, Thelma and Jessie were still living in Saint John in 1971 and had not married. Would anyone know when/where they did die?

I do know that John and Alice were buried at Fernhill Cemetery but I was told there was no record of their two daughters buried at Fernhill.

Regards,
Jerry

I am desperately seeking information on the family of my great uncle,Ivor Henry JENKINS born in 1892, a British Home Child who arrived in Quebec in 1904, destined for Saint John, N.B. and indentured to farmer Fred Keith (living in Cardwell on the 1911 census).
On 30/6/1919 he married Minnie Gertrude STUART in Kings County, N.B. (both were living at Black Harbour, Penobosquis). Minnie was born in 1898 in USA and arrived in Canada in 1904 (living in Amhurst, Nova Scotia on the 1911 census).
They had one daughter, who I believe was called Gertrude. I would be very grateful for any information about his daughter (birth, marriage etc.), also for information on when and where Ivor and Minnie died.

I don't have much information on them...I can only place one name...Martha b. 1837 there. Martha married Jabez Symes in 1860 probably in Grand Bank, Newfoundland..and they later emigrated to the United States (about 1889). I have only just started my search on this family...so I would appreciate any guidance. I have absolutely no clue on how to search in Canada. Thank you very much for any and all assistance.

Fury (and all spelling variations)

I'm trying to find any information on a family with the last name of Fury in the Saint John area around 1820's to 1850's. Could be spelled various ways.

Bridget Fury married William Lawlor on Nov 1, 1841 by J. W. Gray in the parish of Simmonds. Bridget and William were later remarried by a Catholic priest on Feb 3, 1853 Bridget & William are my great great grandparents. They had 9 children. They lived out at Lawlor's Lake and at one time William owned the Brookville Lime Quarry in Simmonds parish. William was baptized on Feb 10, 1823, son of James and Mary Lawlor. I have no information on Bridget what so ever; parents, siblings, when or where born. Bridget died March 28, 1889.

The only thing I have on Bridget is that she was born about 1819. Thats it.

Barb

Hi - my third posting in 5 years. Still looking for anyone related to :
William Murphy- b. Ireland -1827-1835, may have immigrated 1845 to New Brunswick. Married (probably) 1846 Saint John , Alice Bowes b. ~1835 New Brunswick
Probable children:
Harry (Henry) Sarsfield Murphy b.Dec 1 1848, Saint John, d.1920 Philadelphia, PA( Alice B.. and William Murphy were listed as his parents on his death certificate)
Robert T b.~1860 New Brunswick (also Nova Scotia one census), d.after 1915 New York (lived in Elmira NY in 1880-1890's)
Patrick b.~1862 NB
John H.b~1862 NB
William E b.11/1867 NB (date 1911 census)
Mary A b.6/1869 NB (date 1911 census)
Emma J b.5/1872 (date 1911 census)
Dorothea b.~1873 NB

(in 1901 son Patrick is married and living with his family:
Mary H b.1869 NB
Thomas R b. 1893 NB
Aubrey P b. 1894 NB
Jerrit F b. 1899 NB
William A b.1900 NB)

They lived in Simonds,Saint John in 1881 and in Saint John city in 1901.
On March 25, 1905 William died.He was living at 53 City Rd. and is buried at Fernhill.
Alice and some children were listed on the 1911 census in Victoria Ward of Saint John.
Alicia Murphy b.2/1836, age 75 widow, born NB, Presbyterian , parents born Canada
William E. age 44 works in cotton mill
Emma age 39 works in knitting factory
Mary Mc Bride, widow age 41 works in tailor shop
Alice S. granddaughter age 18 b.8/1890 - works in dry goods
Florence granddaughter age 16 b.4/1892
Geo. age 14 b. 10/1897

Alice Murphy d.Mar 20,1915 She is also buried at Fernhill. also at Fernhill:
William E.son of Alice and Wm, d.Jan 7 1956 age 88- he was a laborer and owner of the lot
Miss Emma Jane Murphy d. Sept 2, 1965-age 94- daughter of Alice and Wm -

The Murphys were Presbyterian. On all census they are listed as such and the family lore agrees. My Harry/Henry S Murphy immigrated to the US about 1870 and has yet to be found on any census in NB.It doesn't make sense that Alice and William were married when she was 10 years old, nor does it make sense that she gave birth to Harry at age 12-13.Ruby Cusaks site has a listing for the marriage of Alice and William in 1846.
I have contacted the protestant diocese of Saint John but they said their records are a mess and would try to find the Presbyterian records for me ,but that was 2 years ago and I have heard nothing since.

I am hoping someone else is looking for or related to this family. Thanks- Diane Land in Pennsylvania

Hi,

I'm seeking any information on my g-g-g-g-grandfather, Charles Paterson from Dumfriesshire (Cummertrees?), Scotland who died in Saint John on 2 January, 1848.

By way of background, Charles' daughter, Helen, and her husband William emigrated from Scotland in 1821 to PEI where they lived for a number of years before moving to New York City via Halifax. Subsequently, they moved to Montreal, then settled on a farm near Maitland, Ontario (between Brockville and Prescott) around 1850.

I have no idea why or for how long Charles Paterson was in Canada or if he had any contact with his family while he was here. His wife, Jean Glover, predeceased him in 1826 so it's possible he had another wife and children in Canada.

Any information on the life of Charles in Canada would be greatly appreciated.

TIA.

Pat Byers
Ottawa, ON

Please help my son get in touch with his father - Randy J Tobias, son of Raymond and Doris of Saint John NB. I am chronically ill and cannot afford an investigator. We have no other family - when I am gone my son has no one and nothing. I've lost almost everything due to illness and my poor son has to live with a really sick mom - it's not a pretty sight and I have so much guilt. I wish the loving strength of the truly kind hearts of the maritimes could envelop and soothe us.

John G Clark b.1838 son of Ebenezer Clark

I have searched the New Brunswick Archives site and had no luck finding a birth record for my great grandfather John Griffin Clark who was born in Saint John approx 1835. Any suggestions on where else I might look to verify his birthdate/place?
Also his father (Ebenezer?)operated a ship chandlery in the area of West Saint John for "many years" probably between the years 1820-1850 (approx). Any suggestions on where I might look for more information on him? His family (father/grandfather?) came from Ipswich Mass.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Laurie
A Century of Provincial History Textbooks in New Brunswick Schools

Hello.
Recently I wrote an article which describes the
series of textbooks which, beginning in 1903, were
used to instruct New Brunswick students on their own
provincial history. These were the texts which our
ancestors and indeed many of us, used in grade school.
It is my supposition that the curriculum contributed
to the collective pride and sense of place that New
Brunswicker's are famous for. The article URL is:

http://thelostvalley.blogspot.com/2008/02/new-brunswick-hist...

I am looking for feedback, especially from those living
far distant from the province and who may have had similar experiences to my own. At minimum you might enjoy a look
at photos of the textbooks from your youth, or used by
some of your N.B. ancestors.

Cheers!. Ron
Does anyone happen to know is any patient lists/information exist for the Provincial Hospital on the West side of Saint John, circa 1870-1874?

I was trying to track down someone's census record in 1871, and came across someone I think is her, but the spelling is a bit off. The age and birth location are right, and given how 'creative' they were with their spelling, (her name was Dudne, census has Dudnas, and there are no other families with that name in any records leading up to that census year), leads me to believe it is her.

I would be greatful for any help.

Thanks

Searching for information about my great grandfather James Callan. He was born ca 1854 in Ireland but I don't know where. He died Jan. 10, 1895, in St. John, NB. Canada. He was married to Mary Malcolm in St. John (I believe, but need proof) ca 1878. They could have been married in Ireland and came to St. John ca 1878. They lived in St. John until 1896 when Mary took the children to Hartford Ct. Their children included: Annie Maude Callan b.July 10,1879; George Guy Callan b.May 25, 1881; Burtha Floss Callan b. Sept. 8, 1882; William John Callan b. March 28, 1885; Myrtle May Callan b. Dec. 30, 1887; James Samuel Callan (my grandfather) b. March 8, 1889; and Ethel Blanche Callan b. Nov. 22, 1892. This information was from a bible owned by Ethel Callan Miller my great aunt. This bible was inscribed to Robert Malcolm, St. John N.B. July 31,1883. I believe Robert to be Mary Malcolm's younger brother. Any help with these families would be appreciated.
Robert McIntosh born 1774 in Perthshire, Scotland

Looking for any info on Robert McIntosh born 1774 in Perthshire, Scotland. His father was William McIntosh. Supposedly William was closely connected to one of the Clan Chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh. Anne Barry, grand daughter of Robert's son William, passed down that Robert's father William was the son of Robert Mackintosh and Anne MacQueen. Another relative thought that William was a grandson of Alexander Mackintosh (d. 1781 Newburgh, Fife)whose oldest son Aeneas later became Chief. Alexander's 2nd son, William was baptized 11 July 1756 in Newburgh, Fife. Obviously there have been some oral traditions that Robert had some family connection to the Chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh, I'm looking for other relatives/descendants that would have additional information or records that can help clear this matter up.

I am especially looking for a family bible, either one that belonged to Robert and his wife Agness or their children.

I have searched and searched and have not been able to find a suitable baptism for Robert. In Ira Beattie's research he says that Robert was born 3 October 1774. Robert's tombstone in New Mills, Restigouche, New Brunswick says that Robert was a native of Logierait, Perthshire. Also his name is spelled M'Intosh.

If Robert had a close connection with the Chiefs it is possible that Robert was baptized as an Episcopalian because the Chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh were Jacobite supporters and many of them were Episcopalian.

Robert married Agness Bartie in Errol, Perthshire on December 5, 1802.

Their children are as follows: William (1803 Errol), Robert (1805, Errol), Joseph (1808 Craiglochie), Hugh (1809), John (1810 Craiglochie), David (1812 Kilspindie), James (1814 Kilspindie), Alexander Saunders (Lochmill), Peter (1818 Lochmill), Agnes (1820 Lochmill), Euphemia (1823 Lochmill), George (1824 Lochmill), Thomas (1827 Lochmill).

Robert and Agnes emigrated to Restigouche county, New Brunswick in June of 1833, William and David emigrated in 1839, Alexander in May of 1833 and all of the other children, except not sure where Joseph and Hugh ended up.

Robert died Dec 12, 1846 and Agness died in 1863. They are buried in New Mills, Restigouche, New Brunswick.

Any help on Robert's parentage and lineage would be appreciated as well as any other info and family records.

Andrews in St. John NB

My son is in search of his father's family and really has no one to ask as they are at the age where memories fail or already passed on. We have gotten what we can for project but he needs to have 4 sets of grandparents. (my side is already done, so he couldn't use it) This is what he has
Father: Malcolm John Jones - dob: 1956-11-11 still living but doesn't remember much, never asked, never met his grandparents.

s/o: Ola Joyce Andrews - Sharpe - Jones - McCullough
dob: 1913/05/10 (this could be wrong, cannot find her birth records) She is still living but not well and memory is fading. (the past upsets her very much so we don't ask)
We did find records for her sister Philis, who is in the same boat as for memory we have been told. But we also found a brother Henry that no one knew about.

Ola is the d/o: William (we were told Walker) Andrews and Margaret Hanley (we were told Black) they were married in 1902 in St. John. Apparantly the family had a small cottage in Wickham on the shore of a river, called "The Shieling" if my memory serves me right. I saw pictures of it. But the family lived in St. John.
We have found no information on Margaret

William dob: 1877 appears to be the s/o Hugh Andrews and Amanda Randell.

This is about all we can find. I am currently searching cemetery records but it isn't easy from Ont. If any of these people are in your tree, please let us know.
Thanks

Anyone with any info or interest in this portrait can email me at killerdeb@yahoo.ca. I can email the photo to anyone interested.

Their son George Young DALZELL b. 1853 in Lorneville m. Susie GALBRAITH b. Lorneville, October 21, 1873 in Lorneville.
