Hi Laurie
I was looking at the IGI records last night and I found the record for John Stentaford baptized on 6 March 1777 in Ugborough, Devon. It listed his parents as John and Hannah Stentaford. This John and Hannah had a number of other children: Thomas (1778), Hannah (1779), William (1781), Jane (1783), Anne (1784), Peggy (1786), James (1788)and Elizabeth (1789).
My John that went to Newfoundland died in 1849 according to his obituary at the age of 74 years which means he was born around 1775. Therefore he could be the John baptized 1777 son of John and Hannah.
I also found records for the baptisms of children of John and Nan Stentaford but they appear to be a generation older than my John that moved to Newfoundland. John and Nan's children that I found were: Nan (1743), William (1748), John (1746), Elizabeth (1750), Thomas (1751), Elizabeth (1755), Honour (1757).
Maybe this John who is the son of John and Nan is the John who married Hannah above. What do you think?
I found the marriage record for a Charles Deering Stentaford to Ann Scobel on 19 April 1816 in Ugborough. I couldn't find a baptism record for Charles.
I also found records for a Ann Stentiford who married William Tuck on 28 Jan 1793 in Ugborough and three baptism records for their childre - William, Jonathan, and John. This Ann Stentiford could be the daughter of John and Hannah above.
I would love your thoughts on this. Thanks.
Wanda
