Notes for Andrew Keough:
Notes for ANDREW KEOUGH:
John Mannion of MUN writes" I think Andrew ( 1784) resided first in King's Cove, he was fishing there in 1815 with Henry Handcock, a shareman. In 1819, Andrew was supplied by the merchant company of James MacBraire & Co. and was in debt for 94 pounds, a huge sum. Kough's property at King's Cove was seixed. But he was till there in 1823 when MacBraire sued him for L42. Andrew denied the claim and travelled 3 times to St. John's to defend against it. MacBraire lost and had to pay Andrew's expenses. L7.10.00 . I think Andrew moved to Plate Cove around this time. James Heany of Plate Cove was Godfather to James ( 1824), son of Andrew. I cannot account for John, Thomas or William in Lovell. Peter Hinton's Kough's were Protestant and in no way connected to your clan. They were merchants in New Ross since 1750 and in St. John's 1770 on. Possibly Germand Palatine settlers, originally Kock, in Old Ross. ( This information courtesay of Vince Hunter)

SIGNED AND SEALED SEPTEMBER 15,1852
WITNESS: James Stewart and Michael Murphy
NOTE: It is interesting to note that a year earlier, Oct. 9th, 1851, James Keough received his land grant in Plate Cove, and that Patrick Keough already had land adjoining one of James's parcels at that time, north and on the west side of the road to Race Cove.

Notes for Alexander William Melvin:
In the early 1900's there were many Roman Catholic supporters in Gambo as
well as Mint Brook, so a church was constructed in 1903 in the upper part of
Gambo to service both areas. (The old RC cemetery is still at the site today)
Mint Brook had a tragic fire which burnt out the Mint Brook sawmill and many
homes there, the church was moved to its present location. Like a giant
avalanche thurdering toward upper Gambo, the old church slowly but surely
strained itself over the ponderous bog. Aided by a small army of men and
two A.N.D. horses, the church pushed its way for two years 1924 - 1926, to
its final resting place where it stands today testifying to the spirit and
determination of the people: a people who loved its church so much, mass was
not missed in the two year journey. These faithful people laid the
foundation for the Roman Catholic Church of Gambo. Contractors like Alex
Melvin who supervised the 1926 launch: Jim Hardy who teamed the A.N.D.
horses and the small army of men who tired relentlessly until the church was
positioned where it is today.

The abbreviation A.N.D. means the Anglo Newfoundland Development. They
were the company that did all the logging in the Gambo - Terra Nova area and
were in operation until 1959 when the operations ceased.

Marriage Notes for Mary Keough and Alexander Melvin:
The town of Gambo was formerly split into three areas, Gambo, Dark Cove, and Middle Brook. All three places were later known as the one community of Gambo (this occurred around 1980). Our family was living in the center of the three places: Dark Cove.
Why is it called Gambo? The name Gambo is believed to be a corruption of the Spanish or Portuguese name "Baie de las Gamas" (Bay of the Does), found on early maps of the area. It seems that the Gambo area has been a hunter's and fishermen's paradise for at least 500 years.

The first settlers were English fishermen chasing the abundant salmon in the early 1700s. Later in the nineteenth century, Irish descendants from the southern shore and New Brunswick, came to work at the local saw mills.

Employment: Salmon fishing, lumbering, and the Newfoundland Railway have traditionally been the main industries. More recently the economy has diversified to include tourism and Gambo is a major service center for surrounding communities.

Story of how Mary met Alexander, told to family member's , granddaughter Paula Melvin and Barbara Proude
Mary was working for an older lady cleaning her house (spring cleaning). She was cleaning the porch and was on a ladder clearing away cob webs when the light hanging touched her ( it has bad wires). She screamed, Alexander was walking by at the same time, The story I've heard about Nannie and Grampy is that when she was a baby her father was in the merchant navy and grampy was on the same boat; and that he use to go to Nannie house when they were in port. Nannie use to tell me that grampy use to rock her in her craddle and say he was going to marry her one day. They lost touch and when she was old enough she moved to either St. John's or Grand Falls to work; she met Grampy and they were married. I don't know if it's true but thats what Nannie told me.
