POWER family in NFLD originally from Ireland

Hello there!

I am looking for any information that anyone has about John Thomas Power (b.Nov 26 1835 d.Mar 07 1916) and his wife Elizabeth Sinnot Hurly. They are my great great grandparents and I have been unable to trace any farther back than them.

All I know is that John was born in Newfoundland but his parents were originally from Ireland.

Any information or a point in the right direction is more than appreciated!

Their Children are:
Dorothy, Patrick, Mildred, Donald, Francis Patrick, Jane, Jerry, Michael, John, Clyde, Terry, Linda, Wayne & Carol.

We know that the children were also born in St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland, Canada.

My husbands father is now in Alberta Canada. The rest of the information is rather sparse.

My husbands grandmother is the daughter of Elsie Jane Wareham (1892-1939) from Shoe Cove, Newfoundland. Elsie married a Stephen Hodder (1878-1953). I know that Elsie is the daughter of Agnes Jane Anstey (b@1870) and James Wareham (b@1855. I know that James & Agnes had 3 other children; Bessie Maude (1894-1896), James Bennett (1891-1891), and Rowland (7April 1898). Agnes was James Wareham's second wife. His first was Ellen Power (B@1849) also of Shoe Cove, Newfoundland. I know that James was the son of Stephen Wareham. What I am looking for is anymore information on this side of my family tree. My husbands grandmother is still living (in Nfld, Eva and she married a Martin.

Mary Rowe immigrated to US and married Norman West

Trying to track the path of my great Aunt Mary Rowe, born April 1902 to Amable and Catherine Rowe in Port Au Port. Was supposedly a nurse who ended up in the US (New York) and married a pharmacist/druggist named Norman West.

Can't seem to find her anywhere between 1921 when she was listed on the 1921 NFLD census and her SSDI death index entry for 1967 in Ogdensburg, NY.

Anyone have any light to shed?

Preparing for research trip - suggestions?

I'm preparing for a research trip to Newfoundland - getting my database as complete as possible from the information I can get remotely, plus making a detailed to-do list.

Most of my time will be spent in the provincial archives, but may also try to fit in other repositories. Most of my ancestors are from the Bonavista Bay region, but also some from Trinity Bay and elsewhere.

Any suggestions or helpful hints on how to make the most of the trip would be appreciated - particularly anything that isn't mentioned on the website for the archives that might be important to know before I get there.

Since Walter is a family name in my Bickham family, and Ashburton Devon IS where the family came from, I'd like to know if he was related to my family.

Can anyone possibly help me in finding out more details about this Walter? Like when did he arrive in Canada? Who his aprents were, Was he married, if so to whom and when? And did he have any children?

His age at death gives a YOB around 1768. There's nothing in the IGI for the name/date.

Any suggestions as to where to look would be helpful too. I live in Toronto, and hope to get to the Reference Library next week.

My Grandfather was Thomas Patrick Squires b May 1883 d 1953, who was married to Catherine Mary Parrell b 30Apr1897 d. 11Apr1945. My mother was Genevieve Francis Squires b. 12Jun1929 d. 15Oct 1998.

My g grandfather was Thomas Squires b. abt 1831 Broad Cove, his wife was Ambeliah (Amelia) Sparkes b Sep 1843 at Bay Roberts or Bell Island.

gg grandfather was William Squires from Broad Cove and wife Mary Fitzgerald from Bell Island. I do not have birth or death dates.

If you have any information on my family line that goes back further than William and Mary, I would appreciate it, also if you know of a Squires that might be doing research/genealogy on my line I would appreciate it.

Correcting a death certificate?

I just received some death certificates I ordered from the Division of Vital Statistics. One of them lists the wrong place of death. The town name is correct, but there are (and were) more than one town by that name and the wrong region is specified on the death certificate. There is *no* doubt that the information is incorrect. There are several living witnesses who can confirm the correct place of death.

I don't know whether the error was introduced when the death certificate was issued to me or whether it happened when the death was initially registered in 1976. If the error occurred when this certificate was issued to me, I imagine it will be much easier to get corrected than if it was at the time of registration.

Has anyone had experienced getting a corrected certificate? Am I going to have to jump through many hoops? Will I have to pay *again* for a corrected certificate? Is it even possible?

St Andrews, Newfoundland, Fogo, & Christian CLAUSEN

I am looking for information on a memorial that was erected by the congregation at St Andrews (Fogo) Newfoundland.

The CHRISTOFFERSON family of Bornholm Denmark has a postcard sent to their grandmother about her brother, Christian Magnus CLAUSEN. It appears Christian died at sea near Fogo during WWI. The postcard has been translated by my cousin in Denmark who has the postcard.) My cousin, Jan Christoffersen who has the postcard in his possession. He states that on the postcard stands erected by St Andrews congregation a tombstone in memory of parishioners who fell in 1914-1918 and that the tombstone is in Newfoundland (Fogo).

Family tradition is that Christian sailed all over the world in his profession as a sailor. He may have emigrated from Denmark to Newfoundland. He had a brother, Andreas, who too was a sailor.

I have been fortunate to find much information on Christian's ancestry in Denmark, his parents, siblings, etc., but this memorial tombstone remains a mystery.

Christian Magnus Clausen was born 24 May 1885 at Aarsdale, Ibsker, Bornholm, Denmark.

I have tried every resource I can find to look for Christian Magnus Clausen, aka, Kristian Magnus Klausen in Canada. I have been given some websites in Canada by Canadian researchers who have been very helpful and also found some websites on my own, but have not found any information on Christian Clausen.

I hope with this query someone can help or put me in touch with the St Andrews congregation, historian, or whoever can help me with information on the St Andrews that is on that post card in Newfoundland possibly Fogo. Also, give me information about a cemetery that may also be connected to the St Andrews? From what my cousin states the memorial is shown erected at St Andrews on the post card. I have looked for a web site for a St Andrews in that area and can't find one so I would be grateful for an address where I can write for information. Could the church have changed names, etc.?

Naturally, as a family historian, I wonder if Christian Clausen did immigrate to Canada? Did he marry there? Could he have descendants there? Did he become a citizen of Canada? Was he a parishioner at St Andrews as the postcard indicates? I looked at the WWI site for Canada and did not find him there.

Look forward to hearing from anyone who can give me guidance.

Thomas marries Apoline "Polly" McKeown 23 April 1907 in the Notre Dame du Bon Conseil Catholic Church of Montreal and James is conditionally baptized in the same church in 1907 and then marries Theresa McDONALD 18 August 1908 in the Notre Dame du Bon Conseil Catholic Church of Montreal.
At the time of James' baptism and then Thomas' & James' marriage, their parents are listed as "the LATE William DAVIS and of Mary Murphy of this parish".
Theresa McDonald is the daughter of a James McDonald & Mary Josephine Aspell. Her dad James is the son of James McDonald and Elizabeth MACK of Newfoundland. Mary Josephine is the daughter of John Aspell & Bridget Maher.
Apoline McKeown is the daughter of Charles McKeown & the late Emma Gravel of Grenville parish.

Can anyone shed light on which part of Newfoundland I should search first?

She went to New Brunswick sometime before 1902 as she married a James Smith in Carleton County, Kent Parish in 1902. I have a 1900 Wisconsin Census record showing that Joseph emmigrated to Wisconsin in 1875.

John's wife was Harriette who was also born in Newfoundland.

John Robert Baker Canada/USA Policeman or Detective

John was possibly born and lived in Newfoundland then went to the US to live with his family.

His father was E Edward Baker his mother was Stella but she was from Illinois US, there were three other sibblings.

I am seeking information on John who was either a policeman or a detective prior and post WW2 he was in the 390th Bomber group eighth United States air force and served i the UK.

He served at Fourth and Elgin Street police department as far as I know, he had a friend named Roy Housour.

To date that is all the information I have.

If anyone could advise me or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

In the 1861 Census for Tete-a-la-Baline there is a SNOW family listed as living in Baie des Moutons and having originated in Terre Neuve (Newfoundland). Is there any indication anywhere in the Census as to where in Newfoundland they came from? Any help would be most greatly appreciated.

I have been trying to find my husband's grandmother's family in Newfoundland for several years now. It is mystifying to me that in such a small area as Newfoundland I am having such a difficult search with the information I have.

What I know is this:

Her name is Mary Elizabeth White born October 28, 1891 in St Johns Newfoundland. Her parents are listed on her marriage certificate as Charles White and her mother as Mary E. Crumbie. The deviation I found was in a family tree made up by her daughter that Mary's middle name is Jane. My mother-in-law referred to her as her Scottish grandmother and she was raised as a Presbyterian. Religion seems to be a major component in a search in Newfoundland. Another family name mention is Purdee/Purdy which could be either Charles's or Mary's mother's maiden name.

According to my mother-in-law Mary had several brothers-perhaps 3(one named George, perhaps). At least one of which as well as her parents had died before she immigrated 1912. The first ship's manifest I found listed a brother J. White of Clarenville Newfoundland-which Mary also lists as an address. She must have returned to Newfoundland because I also found a second manifest where she list a St Johns address. It appears from a letter I have she worked perhaps as a nanny for a Kelvin and Brenda but returned to the States again by 1915.

I have an album of Mary's full of pictures some of which I am sure are taken in Newfoundland as well as stories from my late mother-in-law which indicate growing up on a farm with livestock. Mary also worked as a WWI nurse or in some such capacity but neither the American or Canadian Red Cross have any record of her.

Does this sound familiar to any one's White family? I am sort of hoping the brothers Mary left behind had families. It appears once Mary left Newfoundland in 1915 she did not keep connected to her family-at least not to my mother in law's knowledge. Mary died in Connectiuct in 1964,her married name Alden.

She is looking for information on her family who moved to Toronto, Ontario sometime in the 1950s but prior to this time lived in St. Alban's. Her father, Anthony Bertram House (Howse) was baptised at St. Ignatius Church in 1927. He was the son of Mary Jane Howse.

Text of Rev. O'Connor's will, probated 1884, appears at(http://ngb.chebucto.org/Wills/oconnor-thomas-4-321.shtml) O'Connor's housekeeper of many years was Mary Ryan born about 1814 in Co. Kilkenny, Graigue (or Craigur) died at Portugal Cove NFLD 1871. Does anyone know of this family? Was Mary Ryan related to Thomas O'Connor? Hoping this family may be related to a Kings County, Nova Scotia Ryan family.
The will also mentions his brother in County Tipperary, Kedra, Parish of Cahir, and also 2 nephews Edward J. Ryan at Thurles and James D. Ryan at St. John's.

Reuban married Rhoda Knott (Nott) and had a daugher named Mary Gaulton. Mary married Emmanual Gallop in 1924 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Rhoda was also married to a John Gaulton who had a daughter named Maria. Maria married Thomas Leslie Rogers in 1920 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. They immigrated to Detroit in the middle 1920's.
