Re: Wheaton's

In our family there have been variations in the spelling of our surname Wheadon (Weyden, Weadon, Wadon, Whedon, and Wheaton). I have often seen this in other surnames during my research and I have come to the conclusion that the spelling of the name depended on whichever clergy happened to be officiating. Sometimes several in the same family would be recorded with different spellings of the last name.

Our Wheadons seem to have originated in Ochre Pit Cove, Conception Bay (then called BDV district) and then spread to Bradley's Cove, a few miles up the road. The first Wheadon that we are aware of in this area is Henry. He and his wife Rachel had at least six children. Henry witnessed the marriage of Susanna Wheadon who may have been his sister. Henry was born about 1804, according to his burial record (died 1852, age 48). We do not know who his parents were or where he was born.
I have recently come upon some information through a lady in England that The Wheadons and Wheatons in Newfoundland might possibly have started as the one name so may therefore be related. Then I came upon some information that Robert and Sarah Wheatten and their family came to live in Noggin Cove
but moved in 1874. It also said that settlers that later came to Noggin Cove came there from Ochre Pit cove. This is very interesting, making me wonder about our Henry who is listed on the Voters List of Ochre Pit Cove in 1832.

Any information would be much appreciated.

By the way, has any Wheaton had DNA testing done for genealogy?
