Barry

Hi everyone,

I seem to be having trouble logging in and I am going to Newfoundland in three weeks and am hoping to get some assistance from the people on this list. My family and I are going to be in the Windsor-Grandfalls area and in the Mary’s town region and want to be able to do some research while there visiting a few remaining family members.

I would appreciate any assistance that can be offered and would love direct emails back to me at edelong@rogers.com as I seem to have trouble with the list serve. Below is what I know about my ancestors, I would really like to follow the Barry line back further to know where we originated from but have reached a road block…..I have searched the free internet sites that I found but with little success.

My Grandma is Francis Barry born May 3 1928 in GrandFalls, Newfoundland and died October 24, 1967 in Exeter, Ontario

married to Stanley Preszcator

She was born to Nicholas Barry born 25 Nov 1899 in JeandeBaie, Newfoundland; died Nov 1993 and her mother was Donella Veronica Goodyear born 8 Feb 1911 in PetiteForte Newfoundland died 22 Feb 1998

Nicholas Barry was born to Richard Barry born abt. 1870 in JeandeBaie and died 3 May 1956 in JeandeBaie he was married to Francis Withers born abt 1875 in Rock Harbour died 22 Jul 1928

Any information/direction/advice is very appreciated. I am planning to send a request to the family members who have email (asking my aunt if there are any people with email) to ask that they begin to complete their family information so that I can add it to the one I am doing in Family Tree Maker – I just got the program so not sure yet if there is a way for me to share it with them via email – if someone knows please tell me.

Again, I really appreciate any help and am very open to all advice as I just decided to do this since my family decided to go and visit the locations where our family lived before. It is exciting as there are my dad, his wife; me and my husband; three of my aunts and some of their children…..can’t wait to see what it is like in Newfoundland.

Sincerely,

Beth De Long

London ON
Can anyone help me to assemble information about my Grandmother Margaret Mary Freake nee (Hurley) Daughter of Gertude Hurley, who later married Patrick Joseph Walbourne. Patrick Joseph Walbourne was the brother of Elizabeth Walbourne who was married to Adam freake who was Joseph Freake's father in my first thread. Margaret Mary Freake sometimes listed as Maria I don't know why had 3 children. Beatrice Alice, William and Joseph Robert who died at a very early age. In the 1945 census they were listed as having an adopted son named Marvin Walbourne age 10 who was borne around 1935 I guess. My mom only remembers a younger step brother my grandmother raised named Martin. Can anyone help me with these inquiries. Thanks Madonna

Looking for any information that can help me put information together about my grandfather Jospeh Freake, Fisherman, Fogo Island. Son of Adam Freake and Elizabeth Walbourne. I believe my grandfather had 5 brothers: Leo who married Theresa Coleman, Lynn who married Cecilia Downey, Patrick who married Nellie Oven, Ambrose who married Gertude Lynn. I believe from what I was told he also had a brother named Jack who my mother believed died of some kind of throat aliament. He also had a sister named Mary who married Frank Pickett. My grandfather died in the early 80's during a visit to fogo island with my grandmother Margaret Mary Freake nee(Hurley) daughter of Gertude Walbourne nee (Hurley)while they were visiting there. If anyone can help me put this family tree together I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you Madonna

I am trying to do a search on the Manuels. My great grandfather was Uriah Manuel. He moved to Campbellton from Twillingate around 1905 when my grandfather Cecil was 3 years old. Uriah's wife's name was Lucy Ann(Nee Curtis) who was originally from Twillingate. Uriah had several brothers who moved at the time: James, Samuel, John moved to Campbellton. Valentine moved to Botwood. I am not able to trace this family line back before Uriah although I have lots of information on the manuels of twillingate and Exploits. Nothing connects. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Meshack Rice and Family

Researching Meshack Rice and his son Alfred of Twillingate. Alfred was born in 1849 in Twillingate. Does anyone have these individuals in their family tree or could tell me more about them? Meshack would be my GGGreat Grandfather.

The 1836 census of Twillingate shows 3 families named Rice, all Anglicans. James Rice lived on the North Island, was town constable and seemingly also a farmer. On the South Island, at Little Harbour , lived two Rices. One was Jonathan, a fisherman with 2 boats but no servants. The other was Meshack, also a fisherman with one boat and no servants.

So if Meshack was living in Little Harbour in 1836 then he may have been born there or had more children than Alfred. I don't even know what Meshack's wife's name is. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

(I posted this a while ago but was hoping to put it out again because I haven't had any new leads on this family hopefully someone out there may know something)

Trena
Seeking information on the surnames. I know there were several families of these names in these locations but I'm not sure of connections earlier than 1900. My husband's grandmother was Minnetta Guy born Nov 1904 who married Adolphus Fifield Born Aug 1902 in Champney's arm Trinity, but they lived in Wild Cove NDB first and then Black Island also NDB. Minetta's parents were William Guy born Mar 1861 in Twillingate/Wild Cove and Elizabeth M Roberts born Oct 1864 Twillingate/Wild Cove. I see lots of Guys and Roberts in Wild Cove in the 1921 Census but who belongs to who and how?

Slyvester and Catherine Head were my husbands grandparents. Slyvester is listed on the 1901 Cape Breton Census, as a single lodger, working as a coal miner. He was born Dec.14,1872, Nfld., catholic and of English descend. He married Catherine Theresa Clements "Katie", b. Nfld. 18??, sometime between 1901 and 1907. they had a number of children before Katie's death in 1926. Slyvester had a nephew or cousin named Tom Head, and a brother or cousin named Joseph, "Joe" Head. There is also a connection to a Shea family, they may have adopted or raised Katie. Mary Shea was godmother to one of the Head children and Ambrose Shea was godfather to another Head child. Please if anyone knows any of these families, who their parents were or where in Nfld. they were born, we would appreciate hearing from you.

Surname Rice of Twillingate

Thank you.

Trena
