Hi.I am a Strickland and my grandfather came from Channel. I am trying to gather info on all the Stickland and Strickland's in Newfoundland so that some day if anyone is looking for info I can help. I have been searching my family online and have been coming up with maybe 2% info. Thank god I come from a big family, I was able to get info from my great great grandfather. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in sharing their files so I cam put them with the data base I am building. I have only started working on it yesterday but maybe sometime down the line you may benefit from what I gather. Thank you Gwen Strickland

I am trying to confirm that my gg grandfather, Uriah Bond b. 1844, Lapoile, Nfld was the son of Uriah and Sophia Bond of England. The IGI (LDS) contains a record stating this but I would like to confirm it with a birth, baptism or marriage record. I've searched the Grand Banks site but haven't found what I need.

I have a Phoebe Stickland, daughter of William and Frances who was born in Burgeo on January 24, 1849. She eventually married Thomas Weller (Wheeler) and settled in the Bay Of Islands. I have a list of all her siblings complete with their birth dates that were taken from the family bible.
I also have a Fanny Morgan, daughter of Henry Edward and Fanny Morgan of Burgeo, who married Reuben Park of Mcivers Cove. Also there is a Jane MAtthews in my tree who married Ralph Brake of the Bay Of Islands. These women were supposedly native people or Micmac. If there is anyone with information on the Sticklands, Morgans, and Matthews please contact me as I have a lot of info and am willing to share

In compiling a family tree for the Point Verde,Placentia, Greenes, I've noticed that on the South Coast there are Greenes/Greens with the same sort of names...Austin,Augustine,Nicholas,etc.,and i am wondering if anyone knows of a very old connection between those of South Coast and Point Verde,Placentia.
My GGG-GF,John Green and his brother Robert came in from Boston about late 1778,Robert having fought briefly on USA side. The family were Quakers. John evenrually married into the RC population of Placentia, but one brother(name unknown),remaining Protestant, moved to "the other side of the island" (only direction we have),married there and raised a family. This would have been late 1700s or very early 1800s. Meanwhile, my GGG-GF and his family(brother, parents) were buried in the Anglican cemetery in Placentia up to 1829.After that, his RC descendants were buried in RC cemetery.
If this rings any bells for any Anglican(or other) Greens and Greenes on the south Coast,or elsewhere, please do contact me and compare notes.I so far have accumulated 192 pages on Point Verde Greens/Greenes. Thanks.Ward.wardgreene@hotmail.com

MICHAEL O'BRIEN (1847-1912) and EMMA CONWAY (1858-1946): NEWFOUNDLAND TO RHODE ISLAND: 1907

Listers:

Here is a perplexing problem:

I know that all of the O'Brien family (known as Brien in Newfoundland) were all born in Renews, Newfoundland). Except for Catherine and Martin who arrived earlier, perhaps 1905-06, they all came to the US in 1907. This date of arrival appears on all the US Census: 1910-1930.

I have amassed a great deal of information about this family except for one thing: How did they get from Newfoundland to Rhode Island in 1907? I have scoured the National Archives, but I can't seem to find how they got from Newfoundland to Rhode Island. Did they go by ship or railroad? Did they go from St. Johns to Boston or Providence or New York or did they go overland?

Michael and Emma O'Brien lived at 69 Aurora Street in Providence, Rhode Island. Michael died of asphyxiation in 1912, only 5 years after he emigrated to the US in 1907.

Can SKS find them on a passenger list somewhere?

Many thanks in advance.

Bill Dorgan

Here is the family:

Michael Joseph O'BRIEN
Birth Date: 1847
Death Date: 17 NOV 1912 Age: 65
Death Place: Providence, Rhode Island

Spouse: Emma CONWAY
Birth Date: 28 JUN 1858
Death Date: 15 NOV 1946 Age: 88
Death Place: Providence, Rhode Island

Children

1 F: Mary Catherine O'BRIEN
Birth Date: 30 AUG 1884
Death Date: APR 1977 Age: 92
Death Place: Maynard, Massachusetts

2 M: Martin Joseph O'BRIEN
Birth Date: 26 SEP 1885
Death Date: 12 DEC 1968 Age: 83
Death Place: Providence, Rhode Island

3 F: Bridget Mary O'BRIEN
Birth Date: 10 JUN 1887
Death Date: 10 JUN 1887 Age: <1
Death Place: Renews, Newfoundland, Canada

4 F: Anne Joseph O'BRIEN
Birth Date: 10 JUN 1887
Death Date: 10 JUN 1887 Age: <1
Death Place: Renews, Newfoundland, Canada

5 M: Anthony O'BRIEN
Birth Date: 27 JUL 1889
Death Date: 24 NOV 1963 Age: 74
Death Place: Maynard, Massachusetts

6 F: Mary Agnes O'BRIEN
Birth Date: 1 MAY 1890
Death Date: MAY 1984 Age: 93
Death Place: Greenville, Rhode Island

7 M: Michael Joseph O'BRIEN
Birth Date: 20 SEP 1893
Birth Memo: obituary says: 25 March 1896 Newfoundland

Death Date: 18 APR 1940 Age: 46
Death Place: Providence, Rhode Island

8 M: James Joseph O'BRIEN
Birth Date: 21 JUN 1896
Death Date: 4 OCT 1918 Age: 22
Death Place: Thiancourt, France (Killed In Action in WWI)

9 M: John J.

I currently live in Ottawa and have visited the Rooms on a recent trip. Are there any researchers from St. John's who would be willing to look for some inforamtion for me from the Rooms?

I am trying to find the marriage record for a Charles Knott (Nott) & Elizabeth (last name unknown). They were having children around 1895 so they were likely married around the same time. Their marriage record is not in Vol 102, but it should be on microfilm.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to make a connection to the Strickland's of the South Coast of Newfoundland. For the most part connections are difficult. I am hoping someone might help me with the connection of these groups below.

In the death records in Port Aux Basques, I found a Joseph Strickland b. 1813. He died June 17, 1894 in P.A.B. @ 81. His wife (Pathenah) they have it listed as Pathsna, b. 1819 d.July 5, 1905 @ 86. They had a son in Grole, Newfoundland named William b. Sept. 18, 1846. (Belloram Baptisms 1846-1866) Also I found William Thomas b.Sept 1852. He married Selina Pike b. Nov. 1857 (census 1921) Married Aug. 31, 1881 Channel. They had Gertrude, John, and Godfrey. Then I found Thomas Strickland that married Frances Susan LeFrense Feb. 2, 1874. Isles Aux Morte. I suspect this thomas is related to William Thomas & Frances of Isles Aux Morte; They had children Harriet b. 1829 Bap. 1830 by Wix. at Deadman's Island, and I think Thomas b. Jan. 3, 1842. I can't find birth records for those families mentioned. Thank you for any information. I am willing to share any information that I have. Manasseh

Notes from the Admin

This is just a quick note to introduce myself as the new Admin of this board, and also to let everyone know that we now have a companion mailing list on RootsWeb just created this week. Simply put, this means any post put on this board now goes through the gateway to the list as well. If you would like to subscribe to the list, please click on the following link for directions on how to do so:

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-NF-SOUTH-COAST....

As you might expect from something so new, the list is very "low-volume" at the moment, but I hope we can change that in the future. If you have any genealogical or historical information to share that is related to the topic here, please post it and let's see if we might spur a little bit of activity, and in the process share some information with some friends you may never have met yet.

I will be looking forward to meeting and working with all of you in the future. Do drop me a line at any time, but please understand that I do not have the time or resources to respond to personal queries, although you will see me do so on the list and/or board as often as time and personal knowledge allow.

David
List/Board Admin

And had at least one child, Henry Rose.

This is not to be confused with Thomas Rose b.1862, d.1887 (which would have been the Grandson of the Thomas Rose I am looking for)

I am wondering if anyone can help with this query. Joseph Small Says " The old couple, Captain Benjamin Buffett and his wife, had two daughters whom I had forgotten. However, I never knew them. One married James Anderson of Otter's Point. However, she died before Uncle Jimmy. The other married Jonas Shears of Harbour Le Cou. They moved to Bonne Bay years ago."
When I looked up the marriage of Jonas Spears the marriage records shows that he married Harriet Branford of Lower Burgeo. May 6, 1858. There were witnesses Benjamin and John Branford. I am wondering if Harriet was his first wife and the Buffett Girl was his second. Manasseh.

I am looking for information on my g-g-grandfather, John Stickland. He was born sometime around 1842, the son of a William Stickland and Frances (Organ?). I believe he had a sister, Phoebe (and maybe Harriet/Harriott). He married a Maria (Bailey, I believe). Can anyone help me out? According to older posts, someone out there has information I would love to obtain. A woman said that she had all of Phoebe's siblings' names and birthdates obtained from a family Bible. Sound familiar? I would love to hear from anyone who has any information about this. Feel free to contact me at dwaynidge19@hotmail.com.

My GGGrandmother was ANNE JACKMAN who was born about 1837 in Fermeuse, Newfoundland. She married ANTHONY CONWAY on October 22, 1857 in the RC Basilica, St. John's Newfoundland. He was also born in Fermeuse around 1833. He was the son of WILLIAM CONWAY and MARY O'NEILL.

I don't know anything about ANNE JACKMAN. Maybe the listers can help me.

Does anyone's database say anything about ANNE JACKMAN?

1. What were the names of her parents?
2. Where did the JACKMANS come from in Ireland?
3. When did they arrive in Newfoundland?
4. When and where was ANNE JACKMAN born exactly?
5. Did ANNE JACKMAN have other siblings? Who are they?

I know ANNE JACKMAN had three children:

EMMA CONWAY, born June 10, 1859 in Renews, Newfoundland and married Michael O'Brien on November 26, 1883 in Holy Apostles Church, Renews, Newfoundland.

THOMAS CONWAY, born June 20, 1864 in Renews, Newfoundland and married Esther Cahill on January 7, 1890 in Holy Apostles Church, Renews, Newfoundland.

ANTHONY CONWAY, born September 6, 1866 in Renews, Newfoundland and never married but had a child later called FRANK JOHNSON after his adopted parents, JOHANNAH and NED JOHNSON.

Thanks,

Bill Dorgan
I am hoping that there are someone out there that
Can throw some light on the Strickland’s of West
Point. My Grandmother, Minnie Clara Strickland
Was b. Aug. 7, 1886 in West Point. Her parents were:
William Thomas Strickland and Esther Cutler. The problem
Is William Thomas. I cannot find any records of him.
The only fact available that I know off is the year of birth.
According to the West Point census 1921, he was b. 1850.
At the time of the census he was living with his son
Percival Strickland, West Point. T

John Strickland and Sarah was living in West Point at
That time. McAlpine's Directory 1904 showed the Following.
John Strickland. William Strickland.
William of William. The William of William was
Called Wilby. B. Jan. 1,1875. William b. 1850 (Census 1921)
If John was was the father of William Thomas, which I
Think he was. Who was Sarah. My Guess is that
She was a Collier. Both William Thomas and Rachel had
A child that carried the name Collier.
If anyone can throw some light on their Connections
I would appreciate it. Thanking you.

I am just starting my search into my family roots. My gg grandmother, SARAH CUMMINS was born in Nfld, St John's I think, in about 1860 and died in Montreal, Quebec in 1954 or 1955 at the age of 94 or 95 years. She had married Robert Day and they had two sons (my grandfather) Robert Leslie, b. 1897 and Harry, b. about 1899 . I believe there were also two daughters, one of whom died as a child when her pinafore caught on fire when she was throwing sticks on a bonfire. I have started to research the birth records on-line and can find other CUMMINS and CUMMINGS but not Sarah. Perhaps they moved from St.John's proir to her birth. I appreciate any help to get me on the right path.

Hi,

I am looking for the family of my great grandmother. Her name in her marriage record was Mary Elizabeth Hann, and she was born in Port Aux Basques on Mar. 15, 1875 and died on Jan. 17, 1915. She married in Cape Breton, to Charles Pero. They lived in Little Bras D'or, and had seven children. She went by the nickname 'Diana'. Her father's name was William, and her mother's name may have been Amy- but it was hard to tell from the marriage record. The census record of 1901 indicates that she likely moved to Cape Breton in 1890.

Any information would be appreciated.

Karen Cooper
I would like further information linking any other famlies to the family of John Bagg and Hannah (Ann?) who lived in Channel, near Burgeo and had children William Henry Bagg (b. abt. 1838), Martha Julia Marrett Bagg (b. 1843) and Isabella Bagg (b. 1847). This family is mentioned by the first pastor at Burgeo who mentioned staying with them while visting Channel to baptize Martha Bagg. Later the family lived in Curling. Possibly connected to the John Bagg, Hugh Bagg, Levi Bagg families of Cape La Hune, but futher information is needed to clarify connections.

Thomas Strickland

I am researching the family history of the Stricklands in the Burgeo area on the south coast of Newfoundland. As a starting point in my research I am using a section of Joseph Small's diary written in 1925:

"James Ingraham lived here. He, too, was a fine old man. I do not know who his wife was. They have both been long dead. They had one daughter who married Thomas Strickland of Muddy Hole. They are both long dead and left a large family of boys: Philip, John, Thomas, James, William, and Robert. There was also one daughter who married J. R. Porter.

Thomas Strickland came from Hermitage Bay as a servant and married as stated above. He was a brother of Robert of Hunt's."

Most of the people that settled the Hunt's Island area came from Heritage Bay in the 1850s. Some of the sons of Thomas may have moved west to the Port Aux Basques area. I would like to know any information about Thomas Strickland or anyone else mention in this section of Small's diary, please contact me.
Does anyone have information on the Mary Strickland listed in the 1921 Newfoundland census for Channel? It lists her as 20 years of age and her birth as April 1900. The name of the family she was staying with is listed as "Cotten" but it should be listed as "Cotter". George G. Cotter operated the General Store in Channel in the early 1900s. George's wife is related to the Meades and LeFrenses from Isle aux Morts.

Maybe Frances Jane. George william
was baptized 1825. Grand Bank. Manasseh.
Ancestor's of Thomas Anderson b. 1870.

I was reviewing some documents and the marriages of Burgeo dated 1857-1900. I noticed a marriage between Thomas Anderson and Angelina Selina Hayward May 19, 1894. The Father was listed as being Charles Anderson and the Witness was John Anderson. I was under the impression that Thomas's parents were Thomas and Julia. I am wondering if his name might be Charles Thomas and if the Witness John Anderson is his father. If that is the case, the only John I can find that was old enough to be his father is John Anderson b. 1815 off William Anderson and Susannah Poole. The reason I say that is, he had a daughter b. 1862. Her name was Jane Anderson and she married Richard Harder Aug. 15, 1886. She was 24 at that time and he was 21. Does anyone have a suggestion on this query. Thank you.
Manasseh.

His children included Abraham (my grandfather), Esau, Fredrick and Maggie - there may have been other children. His widow Sarah married William(?) Simms. Abraham lived with his uncle James & Mary Skinner in Cul de Sac West for a time. I believe Maggie married a Don Rigley (Regley?). Specifically interested in dates of births, marriage, deaths and their childrens vitals (Simms & Skinner).

Thanks
I am hoping there are someone besides me trying to get the Strickland clan togather. Philip strickland is a mystery. I am wondering if someone have found out that is parents could be Thomas Strickland and Elizabeth. She was generally called Betsey. What is most unusual in this family, Robert, Henry and John were baptized in Cornelius Island. Then we have Ann next baptized by Rev. Wix in Great Codroy river in 1835 and after that their was another Susannah baptized 1857 in Mother Lakes Cove. Thomas did live in Port Aux Basques. He seems to be the only Strickland that would be in the age group to have a Child b. 1830. If anyone has the Answer to this I would appreciate hearing from them. Thomas was b.Abt.1789 and Elizabeth was b.Abt.1790. Thanking you in advance.
Manasseh Anderson.
Isaac Anderson

I am trying to tie another loose end in the Anderson Family Tree. Isaac Anderson that married Susannah Hare in 1861. (Source Joseph Small's Diary) He had a daughter named Keziah basptized Aug. 31, 1862 in Burgeo. And I would't be surprised to hear that he had a son named Isaac. Because I found another Isaac today b. May 1897 and his wife's name is Sarah Oct. 1897 in Burn't Islands. But I figure that there is another Isaac b. in the middle 1860's. Anyone that can help, I thank you very much. Manasseh Anderso
nassieanderson@yahoo.com
