Hello, I was looking for some information about Benjamin Strickland born 1879 in Burgeo. He married Margaret Melbourne born 1889 in Cinque Cerf. I can find him in the census records for Burgeo (1921,1935,1945) but after that i cant find nothing. The info Iam looking for is who was his parents, did he have any brothers or sisters. So if anyone has any information on who Benjamin Stricklands parents was please let me know. crs79@live.com

I am gathering up bits and pieces as contributors send email or make postings about Fox Bay life. If you have the time, please send the names of those you knew and anything they may have told you as well as the time period they were there. My gg grandparents left before the island was sold to Menier and were possibly part of the federal gov't evacuation that took place in 1880/81. His wife Catherine Sargent Francis and her first husband, George Francis, were from Garia, Newfoundland and all indications are they were members of the Nfld group enticed to colonize the island by the Anticosti Company. Many false promises were made and after a disappointing arrival in 1874 they made the best of it as all had sold everything in Newfoundland for their new life on Anticosti Island.

What was done at Fox Bay was a monstrous crime. My grandmother, 60 years later, shook with anger when she talked about it.
I personally knew four of the Fox Bay settlers. How bitterly I regret that I did not ask them for the full story. I was young and they were old, and I didn't really understand what had happened.
Is there anyone who could gather the scraps of information that are readily available, perhaps interview descendants of the Fox Bay settlers? I cannot undertake this; I live in Nicaragua and don't have the health or dollars for travel and research.
btw, my great-grandfather Robert Horne was also "lost at sea" around 1880. He was from PEI and I don't know for sure that he ever lived at Fox Bay. His wife and son were there.
Good evening! My email has changed to psluchia@gmail.com. It has been awhile since we corresponded but I am not related to Catherine or Hugh. My great-great-grandparents, Charles and Catherine (Sargent) Nicolle lived at Fox Bay, Anticosti Island from approx. 1874 - 1880.

I would like to gather information about the first group of Newfoundland fisherman that were enticed to settle at Fox Bay in 1874. It was a tough time and not prepared for winter, some sailed for help and never returned. My great grandmother's first husband, George Francis, was "lost at sea" and I often wonder if he was one of the settlers that sailed for help in the fall of 1874. She later married Charles Nicolle when he arrived at Fox Bay approx 1875. Charles helped raise her three sons, George, John and Eli and together they had two daughters, Emily and Fanny and a son, Douglas, while residing at Fox Bay.

Her email is sl@hawk.igs.net.
I have a photo labeled Hugh Hoyles that I believe is Hugh Hoyles Whiting I'm attaching it for the possible connection with Catherine Gallant.
I have no knowledge of Poole or Corcoran--though a Ms. Corcoran, a very elderly lady, was my landlady in Vancouver around 1962.
Best wishes for success in your quest.

I am now reading up on the history of the families of Fox Bay and find it quite interesting and shocking. Thank you for your response.

I have Amos in my files, although not a direct relation of mine, his sister Zillah marries into my husbands Porter lines, twice.

Amos and his wife Emily Jane Oxford took in his neice Ida Porter, after her father died.

Also on Amos passenger list he states he has a sister Mrs. W. Ellis, living in St. John;s NL. This is in 1924, and its not Zillah, so theres at least one other sibling.

Stickland/Hants Harbour jumped out at me

I am adding to the extended branches in my files, and I have Zillah & brother Amos Stickland in my files from Hants Harbour. As well, Amos was a clergyman for Salvation Army when moved to the States.

Zillah b:1877 Hants Hr
Amos b:1886 Hants Hr.

on 1924 Ships list, Amos lists his nearest relative as Mrs. W. Ellis, St. John's Newfoundland. So theres at least 3 of them.

Perhaps a connection?
Re Nickolas Philpitt, he was bornto James & Mary philpott, in Jamestown/ Greenspond Newfoundland. Full name Nickolas Knee Philpott. He came to Nova scotia as a young boy with his mother, then name was changed to Philpitt. Also birth date on his headstone is incorrect, he was born on may 16th 1882 not 1889 as on headstone. I am trying to have this corrected.I have copie of his birth records. I am Nickolas,s Grand son Harry Philpitt.Nickolas had 4 sons, Russell died shortly after birth, Carroll & Stanley , one had no children & one had 2 daughters. William the oldest of his family is the only one to have sons. ALL persons in canada with the PHILPITT name ( except for the wives of the two brothers whom are still living & in their 80,s ) are from William. If I can help I would be pleased as tghev wrong info can make if difficult for others to carry out reshearch Thank You Harry Philpitt,Musquodoboit Hbr , Nova Scotia, Canada. They had a number of children including Michael who married Elizabeth Harding of Boone Bay. You can find most of these records on the search"newfoundland grand banks" site. I have heard that the Organs thru John matthews has been approved.
