looking for information on "Burial Permits"....when did it go into affect in St John's NL? Are they numbered? I am looking for a death certificate on my grandfather, who died 28th Feb 1934. Nobody seems to have any information on him. I know where he is buried, I have a picture of his headstone. I tried getting information from Vital Statictics in St John's, UC Archives & the United Church of Bauline, no luck.. There should have been a burial permit issued for him to be buried..Can the death certificate be traced by the Burial Permit?
Thanks for any infomation you may send me.......
cbderego@caltel.com

I have just discovered in looking through a GedCom file sent to me by the late Cy Rees, there are about 3,000 people entered in it. As I did not have a relationship through many of them I went no further than my Rees line. I have listed only the A and B surnames. I will be happy to do lookups for anyone. There are a few more surnames listed in the Squires query below.

Looking for information on Ananias Anthony of Middle Gullies, Lower Gullies, and Indian Pond Conception Bay South. I speculate that he could be the same Ananias of Kelligrews 1871 and the same Ananias Anthony b. 1840 Cupids to William Anthony and Jane Dawe.

Ananias Anthony married Mary Ann or a Mary Jane. (What was her last name?) Their children (1) Samuel Anthony b. 16 May 1877. (What happened to Samuel?) (2) Joseph Anthony b. 18 Feb 1879. (What happened to Joseph?) (3) Robert John Anthony b. 1870 d. 1902 and buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Upper Gullies. Robert John married Adelina Dawe daughter of Stephen Dawe (Any information on Stephen Dawe useful (4?) Selina Anthony b. 1862 to Ananias Anthony married Garland Andrews of Upper Gullies in Topsail in 1886.

Selina Anthony and Garland Andrews had a son David Rennie Andrews he married in Hopewell on 1919 Eliza Jane Anthony daughter of Moses Anthony and Belinda Morgan of Indian Pond. Moses Anthony was the son of William Henry Anthony and Bridget Dawe of Seal Cove. After William Henry died in 1888 Bridget married in 1890 William Morgan son of Joseph Morgan (Any information on Bridget and the Morgan family she married into)

Any information on Susanna Anthony b. abt 1845 to 1855 married Joseph Morgan. Their children Selina Morgan b. 4 Aug 1876 and married a James Strong. Susanna had a sister name unknown who married a Butler and had a son Joseph (Joe) Butler b. 1874

Ananias and a Job Anthony both found in Kelligrews in 1871. Ananias later found in Middle and Lower Gullies. Job later found in Lower Gullies. I believe that they are the persons and connected somehow. Where are Ananias and Job buried? Can anyone supply information on the Anthony's of Kelligrews? Also a Moses Anthony a blacksmith in Kelligrews in 1864.
Online birth records for Witless Bay appear to be missing for part of the 1860's. I'm wondering if anyone has access to Roman Catholic baptism records for the 1860's? I found reference to records at PANL for Witless Bay: St. Patricks Parish Baptisms; Box #1 1831-1950. If someone has access to these records, could you please look up O'Neil/Neil/Noile baptisms during the 1860's? I would really appreciate any help.

The lineage I am most interested in is James. He married Mary Ann Ryan Whelan. He died in 1900 and she then married a Reese.
Does anyone know if any of the Murrays from Adam's Cove moved to Quebec City or Montreal in the early-mid 1800's? Common family names are: Edward, Joseph, Charles, Frances and James. Trying to find out where my Montreal Murrays originated in Canada. Since the family seems to have married women in Montreal who were from Nfld,, especially the Conception Bay area I am curious about the Adam's Cove murrays.

John Baker Almas

I am a grandchild of Joseph Seymour Almas, the second youngest son of David Almas, who in turn, was the son of John Baker Almas. Both he and William Almas, the youngest child of David, are not included in family tree on this web site.

Joseph Seymoure Almas was born in 1863 and William was born in 1865. Both William and Joseph left Hagarsville and went to medical school. Joseph went to what is now the University of Toronto and William went to Edinburgh, Scotland.

At the end of medical school, Joseph spent a year in New York working an additional year in a hospital. In 1893, he then left and took the train west as far as it would go, which was then Havre, Montana. He established a medical practice and eventually married Geogiana Taylor Sanderson in 1907.

Not much is known about William. I found a census record showing that he was in Libby, Montana in 1900 and was listed as a physician. I don't believe he married.

The family lore is that when Maria died, David married her sister, Rebecca. This reportedly made the children unhappy. Don't know exactly why there wasn't more communication between my grandfather and his relatives. It may have been that he was younger than the others and so very far away.

I would welcome any information people have about this family.

Ellen Johnson

I'm not actually researching the Somerton family but in case anyone is interested and is missing a line. My step father is descended from the Somerton's of Portugal Cove. His grandfather (I think) left Portugal Cove in the late 1800's and resettled in Montreal Quebec. In Montreal the surname got changed to Summerton where there are still some of the family living. My step grandfather's name was Nelson Summerton and I believe his father was either Nelson or Edward(not sure). If anyone is interested I can look into this.

Terry Piercey
tpiercey@rogers.com

My great-grandmother was MARY ELLEN MILLER, of Mi'Kmaq descent. She married PATRICK JUDGE in Placentia Bay, in 1857 or slightly before, and set up home at Isle au Valen. If you have any Nfld. relatives named Judge, then you are at least 98% likely to be related to me,so please contact me re family tree. But I'd really like to find the Indian family of Mary Ellen Miller (possibly spelled ELIN), so if you have or know of any MILLERS with Indian ancestry of any kind, please let me know.Thanks.Ward. wardgreene@hotmail.com

CORBIN family,Placentia Bay and all Nfld.

My GGG-grandmother was Mary Corbin, widow of John Corbin of Argentia and Point Verde, I don't know her maiden name,(Power is a strong possibility, Blanch a second). She had at least one son John Corbin Jr. in her first marriage, Daniel Corbin is a common name in the family. When she married John Green(e),they became ancestors of all the Point Verde Greenes,as far as we can tell. Also any descendants of her son John Corbin Jr. obviously belong in my family tree,as we share the same female ancestor. Would like therefore to hear from ALL CORBINS in Nfld. or connected to Nfld.,so that I can hopefully sort out who is who. These Corbins were connected to town of Corbin on Burin Peninsula and also connected to Nova Scotia Corbins. John and Daniel Corbin lived in Argentia(Little Placentia) in the later 1700s.Thanks.Ward. wardgreene@hotmail.com

GREENE, Point Verde, Placentia

I have so far accumulated 61 pages on the point Verde Greenes, and wish to hear from anyone with this ancestry or having any information on them,as well as any old photos, documents, etc. they could share with me by email.
Although my ancestor,John Green(e) and his brother Robert came from Boston to Placentia about 1778,leaving a tjhird brother behind in Boston or possibly moving to a family home in Nova Scotia, there is a strong possibility now that the family may have been in Placentia in the 1600s under French rule, and even earlier in another English part of Nfld.,after arriving from New England in the early 1600s.(Long story.)
Either way, there are Greens and Greenes somewhere else in Nfld. who are connected to us from long ago. When my ancestor,John Green, apparently Quaker,,married the RC widow of his friend John Corbin in early 1790s,all his children became RC. By this time there was also a Mr. M. Green in the family, but we don't know if he was the third brother or their father,as large Point Verde land was sold to him in 1803,the same land John passed on to his children in his 1829 will(see Nfld. wills, near top of G lis). One brother wanted to stay Protestant and moved to "the other side of the island",maybe West Coast, and raised a Protestant family there. If you are from a Protestant Green family with a similar family tradition,we might well be cousins,so please contactr me.thanks.Ward. (Common names in the family at the time were John,Robert,James,William,Martin,Michael,Vincent,Henry).
wardgreene@hotmail.com

I am related to every JUDGE person I have so far been able to find and identify over the past 200 years. But even if not related,I am interested in knowing any information on ANY person named Judge connected to Nfld. for the family tree I am making up. Since Judge is a very rare name in Nfld., I am quite happy to add in the very, very few who might not be related.
Many Judges moved to USA,and I would like also to know of those and their descendants.
My own ggf, Patrick Judge, married a Mi'Kmaq girl, Mary Ellen Miller, about 1857,and lived at Isle Valen,Placentia Bay. Interested in information about any Miller family with Mi'Kmaq ancestry.
I have just discovered, to my surprise and delight, that my great-grandfather, Patrick Joseph Welsh, born about 1858, and his wife, Margaret Allen, also born about 1858, came from St. John's Newfoundland to Boston in the early 1800's. Their parents' names were Samuel and Annie Allen and James and Annie Welsh/Walsh. I would love to have any information on these people, and can exchange for research at the National Archives and Records Administration in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where I am a volunteer. Cheers, Pat

That should get the required information.
Good luck to Randy! Don't forget Newfoundland was not Canadian at that
period!!!!!!!!!!! Use Great Britain

Following up on recent request for Witless Bay records, I am stuck at my gggrandfather and would also appreciate any help. My ggrandfather was William Lundrigan b1845 married Ester Healy b1854. Their parents were Patrick Lundrigan(b ? about 1819-20) and Catherine Hingy (only referene to last name Hingy in any of the Witless bay records I have been able to find). Anyone have any connections? Only other clue is a marriage record for William Londregan of Gannonfield Parish, Tippereay who married Mary Carey of Witless Bay Oct 6, 1809. dates seem about right for them to be parents of Patrick. Wondering if this is the start of the Lundrigan line in Witless Bay. In the available records it seems that Lundrigan is often written as Londregon, Londrigan or Londregan.
Also trying to find connection to my Dad's family from Mobile.Grandfather Robert Davis b 1876 married Catherine O'Reilley who died 1914. I believe ggrandather was Robert Davis Sr. b 1838 / d 1917 married Margaret ? b1842 / d. 1886.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

J Davis

I would love to hear from any relatives of David and Catherine Power(s) Hickey from Torbay. My Great-Grandmother, Alice, was their daughter and she emigrated from Nfld. to NY in 1881.
The following info on my family is from Carl Galena:
David Hickey married Catherine Power.
They had the following children:
1. Richard Hickey
2. Alice Maria Hickey was born 11 Apr 1861 in Torbay
3. Pat Hickey was born 19 Jan 1852 in Torbay
4. John Thomas Hickey was born 26 Jun 1859 in Torbay and christened 29 Jun 1859 in Holy Trinity-Torbay
5. William Francis Hickey was born 10 Aug 1854 in Torbay
I would like to know if any of the other children/grandchildren came to the US and any other info would be most welcome.

Regards,
Kathleen Tracy
New Canaan, CT.
