Hi Butt chasers,
My gggrandmother was Charlotte Butt, daughter of John and Eleanor Butt. She was born either in Salmon Cove, Flatrock, or Crocker's Cove; all near Carbonear. Her baptism was recorded in the St. Paul's Anglican Baptismal Records in 1806. She married my gggrandfather, Michael White, on Nov 23, 1820, and they settled and raised a large family at White's Room in Perry's Cove. Who was this John Butt and Eleanor? And where did they come from? If you have a ton of info on the Butts, I hope there are a few ounces on John and Eleanor. Has anybody got them in their tree?

The Bradleys came from Dorset Eng.The Gaultons from Burton on Trent Eng.Early immigrants.family Lived in Burin and St Lawrence around 1840 possibly earlier and later Julia Pike Mullins lived near there as late as 1944.She was my Great Aunt We would like to know about any family ties there now.After about 1880 Gaultons ,my g.parents moved to Halifax and in about 1900 they settled in Saint John NB.Have not been able to find year the families came to Canada from England.

My Grandfather was Thomas Patrick Squires b May 1883 d 1953, who was married to Catherine Mary Parrell b 30Apr1897 d. 11Apr1945. My mother was Genevieve Francis Squires b. 12Jun1929 d. 15Oct 1998.

My g grandfather was Thomas Squires b. abt 1831 Broad Cove, his wife was Ambeliah (Amelia) Sparkes b Sep 1843 at Bay Roberts or Bell Island.

gg grandfather was William Squires from Broad Cove and wife Mary Fitzgerald from Bell Island. I do not have birth or death dates.

I believe he was born in 1907. He was married to Katherine McCormack(Power). He had three children. Madeline, Josephine and Margaret. He disappeared when is children were young.e left my great grandmother to rare three small children on her own. No one in my family knew what had happened to him. He left one day and never returned. Laura, I'm your second cousin. Clint Clark. My mother was Maud Dohey whose parents took in one of those orphans , Ann's brother Henry. He went to Montreal in 1928 and died probably of TB a short time later. The TB was coming from the communal Dohey cow barn. It was a TB factory. I have just discovered, to my surprise and delight, that my great-grandfather, Patrick Joseph Welsh, born about 1858, and his wife, Margaret Allen, also born about 1858, came from St. John's Newfoundland to Boston in the early 1800's. Their parents' names were Samuel and Annie Allen and James and Annie Welsh/Walsh. I would love to have any information on these people, and can exchange for research at the National Archives and Records Administration in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where I am a volunteer. Hi Judy,

You asked about a death record for William G. Garland, who immigrated to the U.S. about 1899. I found him in the following U.S. Federal Census reports, state of Massachusetts: 1910 Chelsea, 1920 Everett and 1930 Everett. He was born about 1851 in Newfoundland (in some censuses it says Canada-English, but as in my Great-Grandfather's case that seems to be code for Newfoundland, I have no idea why, but in other censuses William's place of birth is listed as Newfoundland). In 1910 he was a laborer in a lumber yard, in 1920 a laborer in a box factory. He was married to Emily, born about 1870, and in 1910 had the following children at home: Walter b about 1887, Charles b about 1889, Alice b about 1892, Anna, b about 1893, all born in Canada (read Newfoundland), William A., b about 1897 in New York State (?), and Ellen b about 1904 in Massachusetts. Also in the household was Lucy Gooby b about 1861. I found Emily living alone in 1940, so figured William had died between 1930 and 1940. I looked him up in the Massachusetts Death Index and found a William G. Garland who died in Everett in 1932. You can obtain a copy of his death record (which should have his parents names on it) from the City of Everett, 484 Broadway Street, Everett, Massachusetts 02149, attention City Clerk. Send a money order for $5.00U.S. and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Include the following information: Request a death record for William G. Garland, died in 1932, Volume 36, Page 531.

Am seeking the parents of my great grandfather, Thomas STANLEY of Harbour Grace, birthdate possible about early 1860's. He first married Cecelia PARSON on Jan. 9, 1883. He remarried to my gr. grandmother, Bertha Marshall CARSON, a widow. They had children Rhoda, William and Otto, my grandfather, born July 25, 1895. 24 years ago a 90 yr. old Harbour Grace man said that Thomas had settled in the town from a distance and thought that some relatives were Eli and Levi STANLEY, but was not sure who they were. There is a Eli and Levi in the Hant's Harbour 1865 census along with a few other STANLEY males. Any info appreciated.

Brixham born and my mother was Elsie Lamswood. I have
researched the family name for over forty years and have
information going back to 1605! If you are interested let

No doubt you will have realised by now that the Lamswood
name is unique and all are related to each other. The
family originated in Brixham or Dartmouth around the time
of the Spanish Armada. Lamswoods emigrated to various
parts of the world usually seeking work in the fishing
industry. Hence the name crops up in Wales, North East
England, Newfoundland and Canada.

Hi I am very new at searching my Newfie history and would appreciate any pointers I can get.
My Grandmother was Anna or Hanna Maloney. She was one of 9, Mary, Hanna, Gertrude, Joachim, Ernest, Arthur, Patrick, and Gerald. Her mother's maiden name was O'Brien.
I know they lived in Bay Bulls in the Ferry Land District on Bread and Cheese Road. My grandfather was William Walters also I believe from Bay Bulls. He had a sister named Millicent Walters. His mother was Matilda Raymond.
i know most of them worked on trawlers. 3 of the above mentioned Maloney's died at sea at one point. That's about all I know. If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks

Looking for any connections to the above stated surnames from St. John's area in early 1800's.
John Hafey served as Captain aboard the ship named 'Avalon' in the mid 1800's. The ship was registered out of St. John's. He was likely born in Ireland, emigrating early in the 1800's. He married a woman by the name of Hanna and they had at least one daughter, Mary born at Newfoundland in the 1830's. Mary married a Michael Fitzgerald, born in Ireland about 1815. Michael was likely from Bruff and his father was possibly another Michael Fitzgerald of Bruff, Limerick Ireland. Young Michael may have had at least two brothers, James and Thomas who at some point emigrated to the US. Michael went instead to Canada, first to Newfoundland then later to Prince Edward Island. He and his wife Mary Haffey settled at lot 39 on PEI in the latter half of the 1800's and raised a family there. Several of the Fitzgerald children raised at lot39 on PEI later emigrated at the turn of the century to Boston MA, where they had relatives living in Boston's Back bay, specifically in the area of Scotia Street near what is now the Christian Science center in Boston.

I'm looking for info on my gggrandparents from St. John's area of Newfoundland. Susan Blundell(Blunden) married Thomas Gifford. in 1840s. They had a daughter, my ggrandmother, Sarah Jane Gifford born December 1847.

Sarah Jane married William H. Cole (born April 1847), a printer by trade, sometime in the mid to late 1860s, and in NYC. The Giffords and Coles are listed in the 1870 census. William Cole died very young and I was sent an e-mail noting their marriage (must have been wired to Newfoundland) stating that: "William H. Cole, printer, and Sarah J. Jeffers (should be Gifford as all death certificates I have state Gifford), both of St. Johns, Rev. James Millet." Subsequent death notice: "Native of St. John's, left wife and 4 chldren." He died Jan 6, 1881 in NYC at the age of 35.

I see a lot of Blundells/Blundens/Coles in Bay de Verde area. I've only seen a couple of references for Giffords. I saw where one Thomas Gifford went to San Francisco during the gold rush - not sure it is my gggrandfather though.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone. I am researching Patrick Fitzgerald b. 18 Aug 1874 in St. Johns who married Clara Vickers b. Sept 1883 in Witless Bay. They were married around 1904. His parents were James Fitzgerald and Elizabeth McCarthy and her's were Thomas Vickers and Clara Puddister. I am looking for any info on these two and their families. Also two general questions: How hard is it to obtain Newfoundland records if you live in the U.S. I saw on Naturalization records you needed to live in Canada? I am researching my great grandparents John POWER & Rose Ann PHELAN or WHELAN of St. Mary's NF. John was born around 1815 and Rose Ann in 1823. John could have moved to St. Mary's from the Soutthern Shore, possibly Brigus. They had five children: Michael who married Johanna BONIA; James who married Theresa WALSH; John who married Ann BREEN; Mary who married Andrew MOONEY & Johanna who married William BONIA.
John's siblings were: Mary/Margaret who married John PEDDLE; Catherine who married Michael HALLERAN & Patrick who married Johanna GRANT. John & his son Michael died in March of 1875 on the ice floes off of St. Vincent's when he together with about 12 other neighbours were lost when they tried to salvage a French vessel that had been abandoned when it got stuck in the ice.

Slaney. The only information I have is on the back of an infant
picture of my grandmother Matilda Blanche Slaney. It reads "Matilda
Blanche Slaney Born October 16, 1901 at 87 School Street Charlestown,
Mass. Daughter of Robert J. Slaney of St Laurett (sp?) Newfoundland".
I do know that my gr-grandmothers name was Adele but do not know a
maiden name. Adele was born in France.
Unfortunately, I was not wise enough at the time to listen to family
stories when the "older generation" spoke about the family. And now
that generation is gone.

I am trying to locate the family of a lady who used to have the nickname "TOMMY". This lady served in the ATS during WWll at Larkhill, Wiltshire where she met and married a young Newfoundlander ?airforce personel. They went to St. Johns after the war where her husband became a sheriff. They had a daughter named ?Catherine who trained as a nurse in St. Johns. Tommy had a very good friend at Larkhill called Pat WALMSLEYnee SMITH who is my mother. If any of this sounds familiar to anybody could you please let me know. Thank you.

Looking for info on the John LUDLOW who landed at Fogo Island, then moved to Tiltcove. In 1871 this John was working in the mines in Notre Dame Bay. Searching John's wife's name and any info surrounding this lady. They had issue Andrew, John, Emos, Fred, Arthur, Joseph and Abel. Any clues would be most helpful.

Male Adoptee born 01/26/65 in St.John's Newfoundland named "Chris" looking for BMom and BSib. Brother born 02/61 and probably does not know he has a younger brother. BMom stayed at Glenbrook Girls home with Brother and then later after I was born. BMOM was 18 at the time of my birth.I have Non Identify info as well as adoption order. Name is blacked out. Adoption finalized in Feb.1966. I was adopted by US Military family stationed at Harmon AFB.
