Gates/Mosher

I am trying to find a hole in my genealogy and need help:

1. I believe my great grandfather was a Samuel Gates whose wife may have been Rosanne. I believe he was born at gates Mountain in the Oldham Gates line. His cousin was Susan Gates Roach, the sister of Caleb gates, and the wife of George Roach. He had five children: James(b. 1873), Charlotte(b. 1870), William(b. 1875), Frances(b1876), & Agnes(my grandmother, b. 1882). He later moved to either NY or NJ. I know nothing of his parents, siblings, birth & death dates, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

2. I believe there is a Gates relationship also here with W.B. Mosher and the house at Mosher's Corners. Irving Mosher, who owned a grocery store in Margaretsville and later this house, was also involved.

3. Lastly, I understand that during the mid 1800s, one of my relatives(an uncle, I believe)came from Victoria Vale to Margaretsville to work on building ships. He married a local girl and had some children. He later became demented; came home one night and axed to death his wife and children. The ice man found the bodies the next day and found the uncle hanging over the dock in the Bay of Fundy when the tide went out. He was buried in the old Margaretsville cemetary, but the body was stolen by grave robbers who sold it to a doctor in Halifax. I understand a story may have been written about this incident by a historian in Margaretsville in the 1960s/70s. Any clarification of this would be helpful or any ties to #1 & #2 above.

Looking for info on the MacBean's of Annoplis around 1780's? I recently learned that my Bain's were once Beans and before that McBean's, and that they stopped in Woolwich England on their way to New Brunswick Canada about 1785, I recently discovered an Alexander MacBean born about 1756 which is the closest to my Alexander Bain/McBean same birth year. he is the son of a Forbes MacBean, and also related to Gillies MacBean. so the names Forbes and Lauchlen and Alexander and Frederick stay somewhat down the line. In my searches for the Woolwich and Inverness related MacBean's I found some that were born in Nova Scotia. It appears some MacBeans stayed in Woolwich up to 1850, one says he is born in Nova Scotia. which leads me to beleive they are all related. I am looking for any info that will help me find out if I can rule out this Alexander MacBean born 9 nov 1756 in Woolwich England

I am trying to find information on an island off of Port Royal and Clementsport in Annapolis County. During the time of the Loyalists a family by the name of Allaire lived on the island. I am trying to find this island, and find out if anyone lives there, is it accessible, is there a cemetery?

Does anyone know where any records on the island can be found? I have already been to O'Dell House in Annapolis Royal.

I'm looking for information on James D. Lockwood. His marriage certificate says born Annapolis. He married Lydia Condon, 12 Oct. 1872, and lived in Mill Village, Queens County. His parents are listed as Henry and Mary, or Mercy. They could possibly be Henry Hardwick Lockwood and Mercy Farin. Were there other siblings who stayed in Annapolis Co?How and when did the Lockwoods arrive in Nova Scotia?( James is my gg grandfather) Any help would be appreciated.

My late grandfather, Frank Fairn of Moschelle and later Queen's County (1885-1966), said in a 1962 "interview" that his father's brother, Janes Henegar Fairn, had been raised by "Aunt Sarah Bent of Lawrencetown" after his (James') parents died (1855-60). I am looking for information concerning Sarah Bent. She most likely had Fairn connections as James' mother was from New Brunswick.

im a 10 great grandson to francois savoie and catherine lejeune and what im hearing is that they have givin up on who the 2 individuals are let me first of say im not a genealogist but very well aware of french names dit names and all ive been doing this for about 6 yrs know for one to say that because francois came here as a poor farmer or labouer that he cannot be of royalty i find this very interesting according to the vermont french canadian genealogy society they said that it is not unpossible for him to come from royalty and still be a farmer and to all of my cousins on here isent it weird that you have to join a private group for the savoie linage what are they hiding and why arnt people getting updates why because they have givin up and dont want us to know a thing as a member of 3 genealogy societies im well aware of findings and what can and cant be done and as far as im concerned until these so called professinal genealogist i will not name come to the conclusion to look into the savoies in italy or france or any other countrys savoies may have come from then ill keep a open mind of any possibility im not just going to right it off like im blind and theres nothing there im not saying francois is of royalty weather he be or not it still needs looking into just my oppinion you can email me on your thoughts at

My grandfather was William Moses. He left Annapolis as a young man around 1908. He eventually ended up in Brunswick, GA where he married my grandmother Mabel Baker. My family has never known any of William's relatives. We know that he was born in Annapolis. His mother was Georgianna Owens and his father Robert Moses and he had a brother named Harold Moses. If ANYONE has an inkling of information concerning the Owens/Moses family please contact me. William had 15 children and only 4 are living today (one of which is my mother). My goal is to one day soon introduce her to our Canadian relatives, or any relative of my grandfather for that matter....Keeping my fingers crossed.

Some call it the Wilmot Plains Cemetery and it is listed in the cemetery listings for Annapolis County as Wilmot 1 cemetery. Was there ever a church there and if not who designated it as a cemetery? My great-grandmother. Believe from Annapolis Royal in Nova Scotia...place name of Lequille. In Boston by 1877 with two sisters, Mary Dever and Bridget (Dever) Williams. Bridget married Thomas Williams, Mary remained single. Lived in West End.

Isabella was born 2 September 1854, parents names, James and Catharine. She married Philip Barry of Cork and had 8 children. I can find no record of her birth, indeed nothing from Canada at all. I've hit a dead-end. If anyone recognizes the names that would be great.

It becomes our painful duty at this time to chronicle the death of Mrs. Eliza Wade the oldest and one of the most respected residents of Belleisle. She succumbed to a severe attack of lagrippe on Tuesday, the 23rd inst. She was the daughter of the late John Troop, of Granville, and grand-daughter of the late Major Abraham Gesner, a Loyalist, who moved here during the American revolution. She was born near Wilmot, on the 17th day of April 1809 and would in a few days have reached her 88th birthday. She married John Wade in the early years of her womanhood; they moved to Bridgetown, where for many years her husband carried on the boot and shoe business quite extensively. Mrs Wade was the mother of eight children, two sons and six daughters, five of whom survive her. Her eldest son was killed at sea some years some years ago. Mrs. N.K. Clements, of Yarmouth and Mrs. Hettie Mack, of Maxwelton, Digby Co., are her daughters; two died young and two reside with their brother, the youngest son, on the homestead. Over forty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Wade with their family moved to Belleisle, having purchased what was known as the Ruggles property, where they have resided until their decease. She survived her husband about eight years. Mrs. Wade during all her years of life has been a most exemplary Christian woman, a devoted and affectionate wife, a kind loving mother, a most devoted and zealous member of the Church of England. Her remains were laid beside her husband's in the cemetery of St. Mary on Friday last, the Rev. F.P. Greatorex officiating. --- Bridgetown Monitor

JESTINGS of Annaplois, NS- please help!

Hi. I have been researching my surname JESTINGS for several years and have been at a dead-end for most of those years. My ggggg-grandfather was Joseph Jestings of Annapolis Co., NS. I have found his direct descendants and possibly some of his nephews/nieces/a cousin????? but have yet to confirm many of them and more importantly to find naturalization papers or link him to England, Scotland or Wales. I have found only a handful of JESTINGS in England and less than that in Wales. This is a VERY RARE suname so if you find it it's my tree. The problem is finding it. The name was changed "way back when" from Jeston or something simliar. The oldest found was Joseph born in the late 1700s. He married a PHINEY Jan. 7th, 1806 in Cornwallis, St.John's Kings, NS. His (son Joseph?) married an Elizabeth LeCAIN in Clements on 09 Feb 1843. ANY help you could give me would be great for the NS area (or Engalnd/Wales!!!!). The Jestings I've found in NS are from Round Hill, Bear River, Cornwallis & Clements. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Are there any indices available for the 1871 and 1891 censuses? I’ve come up empty online, but perhaps a local genealogy or historical society has compiled an index in book form or on CD?

I’m searching for ancestors that should be in Annapolis County; I'm in the U.S. and haven’t been able to access those years. I’ve considered requesting microfilm through a Family History Center, but the nearest one is a 30-minute drive with limited hours (and I can’t take time off of work right now).

Any information and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I came across this in my research and wondered if anyone out there has a copy of the will mentioned here.

In a Nova Scotia Newspaper; Deaths, Burials and Probates of Nova Scotians...by Marble, there are 7 Fletchers listed. There is a David Fletcher, Jr. who died 30 March 1781 at Granville on RG48 Reel 29(A) . This would refer to a call number at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia Microfilm.

annapolis county cemeteries

I was thrilled to find the list of Annapolis Co. cemeteries and wish to express my thanks for all the hard work that must have been involved.
However the cemetery that contains the graves of Abner and Anna Morse, original Planters who came to Nova Scotia in 1760, along with a number of their decendants is not listed.
This cemetery is located just east of the Morse Road, on the south side of the Annapolis river near Bridgetown.
I have made a list of the graves at this site would like to see this site included in the cemeteries of Annapolis Co. Contacts would be appreciated.

RUGGLES Wallace and Georgina (White) Of Crossburn?

I have recently started researching my RUGGLES family. I have found my great grandfather WALLACE RUGGLES and his wife GEORGINA(WHITE) and their children: Jahue (1892); Guilbert(1895); Margaret(1897)md Cooper; Minnie(1898); Mary(1900)md Hannam; Hannah(19020; Perley(1904); Violet(1908); and Charles(1910).(charles is my grandfather)
The above was found in the 1911 Census.
It has Place: Crosburn Annapolis NS Could anyone tell me where this place is or what other towns it could be near as I can't seam to find it?
At some point this family moved to Middle Musquodoboit as WALLACE AND GEORGINA are buried as well sister Violet and his father JOHN RUGGLES and my grandfather Charles are all buried in Middle Musquodoboit NS.
If any one has any information on tis family it would be greatly appreciated as many family members have deceased.

The Hampton Branch of the family is descended from Henry Fash born 1789. If anyone having information on Henry Fash who his parents were and so forth please message me. We are at a dead end.

Henry was born 1789 and died Oct. 24 1857 and buried in Hampton, Nova Scotia, married 1st wife on Jan 4, 1812 to Ruth Merritt born . ca 1892 daughter of Nehemiah, died Dec. 11, 1837, age 47. Henry Fash and his first wife lived in Granville Ferry, but after her death he moved to Chute's Cove where he married 2nd wife on Sept. 18, 1838, to Margaret Ann Chute born Oct. 12, 1806, daughter of Seth, and she died April 16, 1809, buried in Hampton.

We are also looking for information on Maria White married John Young. Trying to find a list of their children names.
We know that one daughter left to go to Boston to go to Nursing School, she arrived there but never went to the School, she disappeared.

I was always under the impression that the male lines were easier to trace. Well in my experience, I've had greater successes tracing the female lines in my family.
If anyone could help me with this, I'd be much abliged. I've asked my uncles (father's brothers) and they all claim that I know more than I do, then change the subject. Makes me wonder whether they're tryin' to hide a family secret. Makes me more curious.

I am researching my husbands Nova Scotia roots. I am looking for Henry McMullin - birthdate, parents, children, etc. Henry married Margaret Redgate on Jan 5, 1837 in Wilmot Annapolis Nova Scotia. They had one daughter that I know of - Sarah Jane McMullen - born May 1838 - christened in August 1838 in Wilmot Annapolis.

Sarah Jane McMullin married Mathew Cahill 1863 in Antigonish Nova Scotia. Sarah and Mathew had four children that I am aware of: Mary, James, John and Clarence.

James Cahill married Eliza Horne 1892 at St.Mary's Cathedral in Halifax. One of their children - Leah Marguerite Cahill is my husbands grandmother.

I thought I found her listed in a 1827 Kings County census but have not been able to verify this. I am seeking information about my great great Uncle, Dan Brown born in Bristol, UK on 30th May 1870.

He is known to have travelled to Halifax, Nova Scotia in April 1885, aged 15, but I have been unable to find out where he went after that. He is reputed to have lived with Indians before working in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. He travelled back to England with the show in 1891 during which he visited family in Bristol shortly after his elder sister died. Whether he knew of her death before his visit I don't know. This is all that is known about him and he was never seen again.

I have contacted the Buffalo Bill's Historical Centre but they were unable to help, only having information about him that my late mother sent them.

I would dearly love to find out more about his life etc and any information would be welcome.

My name is Brad Roope. My father was Howard Miller Roope, born in Boston MA about 1882, as Howard Roop.Howard died in 1962. He said his father's name was Benjamin Roop. I do not know much of his family.

His cousin was Edna Bell Ditmars born in Clements Annapolis, Nova Scotia 1889. her father was Charles Fenwick Ditmars and mother Sarah Roop. Edna was the only relative that I met. She later migrated to the states and lived in Hingham, MA.

Webster ----- At Boston, September 2nd, E.S. Webster, of Cambridge, aged 20 years, was killed by falling from a window in the third story of his boarding house. The remains were brought home for burial. The funeral was attended by Rev. J.H. Jenner and many friends of the deceased. A gloom is spread over this community. Mr. Webster was the fourth young man belonging here to be killed away from home within a period of two months and the third within the week. He was a member of the Cambridge church, baptized about the same time as O.O. Lyons by Rev. Isa Wallace.

Lyons, A.B., of Waterville, N.S. member of the class of '89, while attempting to cross the railway track was struck by a passing train and killed, aged 34 years. The remains were brought home for interment and on Thursday the 10th were laid to rest in the cemetery at Berwick. Funeral was attended by Rev. J.H. Jenner. Mr. Lyons was a member of the Berwick church, having united with it under the pastorate of Rev. Isaiah Wallace. He had many friends. At the college he was esteemed by all and loved by his classmates. They will recall the tall, strong physique and genial smile so familiar to them. Since graduation, Bro. Lyons has taught in some departments of the school at Ann Arbor. He leaves a widowed mother and brothers and sisters to mourn him.

My grandparents, George E. Hall of Granville and Effie Florence Hudson of Parkers Cove. Effie died 1902 in Florida, I have her obit from newspaper. I forgot to say the Geoffroy family came from annapolis NS to quebec-Berthier i think and then to ontario where Jack Jeffrey was burried in Renfrew county in 1927
