Hi everyone,

This goes out to all the Antigonish Carters:
I found a picture of the 1923 Carter Family reunion in Antigonish. Hannah Carter (neé MacFarlane) and James Carter are there. Tell me if you recognize anyone!

Don was a well liked sportscaster in the Boston area for many year. His son followed him into the profession. I am seeking his Antigonish connections. My relatives who descended from Angus Mhor Gillis, used to say he was related. Any specific connections..

MacDonald / McDonald / Kehoe / Koch

I am interested in any information on any Kehoe / Keho or variant spelling as well as any Koch or variant spellings, from anywhere in Nova Scotia.

The Nova Scotia 1891 Census Harbour au Bouche
(Havre Bouche)
lists my grandfather's family as such.

McDonald, Duncan age 39 Fisherman
Elizabeth age 31 Wife
James age 15 Son
Mary E. age 12 Dau.
Daniel age 9 Son
Catherine J. age 8 Dau.
Angus age 5 Son
Elizabeth M. age 2 Dau.
Vencient age 1.12 Son

Note: Duncan was the son of Angus and his mother's name
could quite possibly have been Emma Koch

Duncan's wife Elizabeth's maiden name was Kehoe
or variant spelling Keho / Keogh ?

Their last child listed on the 1891 census, was my
grandfather. I believe that Vencient was simply a
misspelling for he went by the name Vincent.

Vincents age at the time of this census is recorded as 1.12
He was born April 1, 1891 so I assume that the 1.12 is months and days. Vincent was baptised at Saint Anne's Catholic Parish, Havre Bouche.

The census shows the McDonald spelling but my folks actually spelled it MacDonald.

If anyone shares a common link with regard to anybody listed above, I'd certainly love to hear from you. Thankyou so much.

Information needed on Matthew and Mary (McVarish) McNeil. They are in the 1911 census for Antigonish with three of their sons. Matthew and Mary emigrated to the USA in 1873, and had at least seven children while in Massachusetts. In 1904 they moved back to NS. US census for 1900 says Mary gave birth to 11 children, 8 still living in 1900.
Matthew born 1844 or 1846 in NS. Mary born 1855 in NS or PEI.

His dad was Dan The Ridge MacDonald, a violinist, grandson of Allan the Ridge MacDonald.
Does anyone have any specific questions you'd like me to ask him? He is familiar with the Boston Chisholm family and the Paddy Ban MacFarlanes and Carters, all of Antigonish County.

Good luck researching!

Thanks to all who have submitted info on William Alexander Henry but unfortunately, this does not appear to be an Ancestor of mine. Family folklore has this W.A as my ggg grandfathers brother but my ggg gf Robert/Simon was born in Ireland in abt. 1790, was married to Lady Mary Ann Graham and came to Canada in 1838 according to census records. In tow were children James b. 1824, Robert b. 1826, Simon b. 1827, Johnston b. 1832, William abt 1836 and born in Canada was Charles in 1840. My ggg gf apparently had brothers James, William A., and Patrick who later moved to Huron Co. ON. Any info or leads greatly appreciated.

I have been tracing family back, and one root GGGrandfather appears out of Nova Scotia?

I have an Alexander McMillan of Beaver Dam (1849-1930), purportedly issue of a Duncan McMillan (b1813/14) and Mary (- possible Lillian Campbell?) married about 1839 in Nova Scotia, and (2nd Marriage) 1874 to Mary Campbell (!! hence some confusion?). Some evidence Duncan was born “near Locharber Lake”. Duncan apparently moved to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin around 1845. The McMillans tend to be farmers.

Wondering whether this same Duncan is issue of one of the McMillans registered in area of Antigonish – or possibly Halifax? – And which one?

Any assistance / directions / suggestions greatly appreciated.

Perry Daroesman
Canberra, Australia

Trying to find info on a John MacEachern, originally from Point of Cape George, who died at Keppoch. His father Donald immigrated in 1786 and John was born in Nova Scotia so likely around 1790s. John had a son Donald born in 1828.
No Casket obit for John so he may have died before 1850s or been in a missing issue. His wife was Kate Gillis of Dunmore, the daughter of Mary MacDonnell and Angus Mor Gillis. She died in 1894, age 94, at the home of her son Donald "Tanner" MacEachern at St. Andrew's.
I have found an obit for Mrs. Angus MacEachern of Keppoch who died in 1862. She was Mary MacDougall, daughter of Archibald of Malignant Brook. Thinking she may have been a daughter-in-law of John and Kate (Gillis) MacEachern. Yet to find obit for Angus.
Looking for info on this family or anyone with info on cemeteries in Keppoch area.
Many thanks.
Am searching for the descendants of William Davidson and
Elizabeth Symns Davidson. This couple married in 1831, in
Ayrshire, Scotland. First child Jennet/Jeanette Davidson
born 1833, also in Ayrshire. Probably by mid 1830's they had moved to Nova Scotia. From 1860-1880 several of the
children can be found living in Lonaconing, Allegany county,Maryland.
Would love to know exactly where they lived while in Nova Scotia. William possibly may have been a coal miner.
Thanks

Daniel Cameron MacDonald

This is my first message post, and I'm very new to genealogy, so bear with me.

My great grandfather was Daniel Cameron MacDonald. He married Catherine Sarah "Birdie" Carter, Daughter of James Carter and Hannah MacFarlane in around 1905. Daniel was born circa 1868 in Antigonish, and he and his wife moved to Somerville, Massachusetts in 1905/06.

Mabou Pioneers has my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and great aunts and uncles listed, but it gives the name "Donald Cameron MacDonald."

I know that my great g-f was Daniel, so I'm confused as to whether it is a transcription error, or because the 1881 census lists him as Donald C. or some other reason.

Does anyone have any hints?
Thank you so much

Sarah
Five children in a Linwood, Antigonish County, family died within a six day period in March, 1870. Only the parents and eldest child survived. No cause of death is given. Smallpox? Meales? Whooping cough? Anyone come across a similar pattern of deaths in this area around the same time? Best guesses? Thanks.

Five children in a Linwood, Antigonish County, family died within a six day period in March, 1870. Only the eldest child in the family and the parents survived. The mother was three months pregnant at the time and later delivered a healthy baby. No cause of death is given for any of the five. Wondering if anyone else has info on a Linwood area family that might have had a similar pattern of deaths at that time. Smallpox? Measles? Whooping cough? Thanks for any opinions.

Does anyone know the connections between these 2 areas. As I research a number of families from Tracadie (D'hooge, Petitpas, Perrault) I find that many re-located from these towns. I also find numerous other Tracadie natives in this area not related to these names (Breen, DeLorey, Bennett, etc.). I know some of my relatives were working at the shipyard. Any insights anyone can offer on the migration to Quincy and Weymouth from Tracadie would be helpful. Thanks!

I am looking for ancestry information on William Abraham Rogers (1834-1922) of Pomquet.

William was born to Abraham Rogers and Virginia Benoit. He immigrated to the United States (New York) where he married Therese (or Theresa or Thirza) Collins and had four children: William Augustus, Ida, Freeman H, and Edwin F.

All of William's children relocated to the San Francisco, California area.

William Abraham and Therese disappear from the census records after the children left home. William Abraham reappears as a widower living with his son, William Augustus, in California prior to his death.

In one of the New York censuses, William Abraham is listed as having two nephews living with him, both with the Rogers surname. From this fact and stories of a 3rd generation William's visit to Nova Scotia where he supposedly met a relative, I believe that William Abraham had at least one brother.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone in the Pomquet area who has an information about this family.

Mary McDonald - Stellarton / Brown's Mtn Antigonish / Nova Scotia

Hello Listers,

I am hoping that you might be able to help me in tracing my grandmother and her family.

My grandmother's name was Mary Bell McDonald. She married James Robert Chapman January 28 1902 in the County of Pictou. Mary Bell(e) listed her age as 19 at the time of marriage, and therefore would expect her date of birth to be about 1893 give or take a year . She also listed her residence at the time of marriage as Stellarton. Mary Bell also listed her parents as Daniel and Annie McDonald. Her birth place was listed as Brown's Mtn which I believe is west of the town of Antigonish near the border with Pictou county just north of Marshy Hope. The witnesses for the wedding were listed as Annie B Rogers and Margaret Macdonald and the service was performed by Rev A Rogers.

Would you have any knowledge of this Mary Bell McDonald of Stellarton/Brown's Mtn? Also might you have any knowledge of the other members of this McDonald family?

Any information or leads you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Among his children were Angus, Alexander, Rory, Ronald, Christy, and Jean. Lauchlin's land passed to his son Angus in the 1830s. Lauchlin's neighbours were Donald McDonald ( sailor ) on the Southside and Rory McDonald on the Northside. A Roderick Chisholm was a friend of Lauchlin's.

(it is on 245 near Pictou/Antigonish border, but county associations may have changed from beneath it)

Does anyone have any knowledge/history on Knoydart w/ regards to
- Pictou vs. Antigonish county?
- Part of Arisaig township? in census for example
- Part of St. Margaret's parish?
and how above associations may have changed over time?

Trying to find baptism record of my ggrandmother Jane, Janet or Jessie McDonald, dtr of Archibald (& Mary?). She was b between 1845 and 1855, and prob baptised @ St Bean's. Don't know the exact year because her marriage license and later census years were different. Anybody know where the baptism records may be now? They were not available from St Joseph's when I asked a few years ago, but I believe that is the church that replaced St Bean's in the 1860s. Also does anyone have any old photos of the houses on the hill at Pinkietown (Ohio)? Any other information on the family will be appreciated. Sister Marcella had a son John; one sister m.a Chisholm and stayed in Ohio or Antigonish; sister Mary m. John McLean and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a brother, name unknown, moved to Newton Lower Falls, Mass. There were also Jessie's relatives that visited Pinkietown about 1900, Harcourt and/or Tees are the last names.

I cannot find an obituary for him.

He had two sisters, Janet MacDonald MacEachern, who died in 1935 and Catherine, Mrs. Duncan Gillis of Antigonish, who died a few years later. Catherine is listed in the Casket death index but the obituary is not where it states, although I may yet find it.

The Casket death index does have an entry for a Mrs. Dan A. MacDonald of Big Marsh who died in 1936 at age 72. No first name but she was a daughter of John Heffernan of Georgeville.

There is another obit for a Mrs. Dan MacDonald of Big Marsh who died in 1906 at age 47. She was formerly Catherine MacNeil of Georgeville.

I did not have time to look up either of these women on microfilm so am wondering if anyone who knows them might be able to tell me if either was married to the Dan MacDonald I am seeking.

Dan was a son of Dougald (Gow) MacDonald who died in 1905 - there were other Dougald Gows of similar age. His mother was Ann Boyd who died in 1891.

Many thanks.

Dougald (Gobha) MacDonald and family came out to Pictou in 1801and settled at Malignant Cove on a farm previously owned by John French MacNeil. Two sons died of smallpox on the passage and a third, Donald, was born as the ship was sailing up the gulf to Pictou.
I am looking for a missing generation in this family - Mary Janet (went by Janet) MacDonald was born Sept. 20, 1865, the daughter of Dan (?) MacDonald of Big Marsh?Malignant Cove and Mary Boyd. She married John "Teacher" MacEachern who taught school at South Side Cape George. Desperate for info on Dan MacDonald or Mary Boyd. Dougald had a brother Donald, a weaver at Antigonish, but I think the link is through Dougald whose wife is unfortunately nameless in the Sagart Arisaig account. Thanks!

I am looking for someone who can tell me the best place to go to look up info on Catherine McLean from the Bayfield area. She was born in Bayfield, and I am sure she is buried there. Her married name was Falt. She is my great grandmother, and I have never been able to find any info on her. My last trip there I found something about her being burried in Bayfield. I would love to know where all the cemeteries are so that I could search them. She died shortly after giving birth to my grandmother and my great grandfather married shortly after her death. No one seems to know anything about her. I do have her parents and siblings names but no dates of birth/marriages/deaths etc.
This is my 5th trip there and would love to come home with as much info on that side of the family as I can.
Please send me anything you may be able to think of as to where to look. Yes I have searched PANS numerous times and found NOTHING.
I thank anyone reading this who may be able to help, or knows someone who may be able to help. We will be there the 3rd week of August.
Thanks,
Barbara Ensign

Hello: I'am trying to find information (parents or family) of Elizabeth (MacKinnon) McGlashing who I believe was born in Antigonish. Birth date @ 1857 or 1862. She married @1881-1883 John Ritchie McGlashing. Elizabeth died in Concord, Massachusetts in 1942. Elizabeth & John Ritchie lived in Tidnish & Amherst at different times before coming to Massachusetts. John Ritchie died in 1934 in Pugwash, coming back to N.S. looking for work. Any info on Elizabeth or if you think you have a family connection would be happy to hear from you. Thanks Sandi

MacDonald/Bridge MacGillivrays

Donald Riabhach MacGillivray, progenitor of the Bridge MacGillivrays at St. Andrew's, came out in 1801 with his wife Sarah MacDonald. Anyone know anything about Sarah? One possibility is that she was a cousin of Seonaid MacDonald MacGillivray, the wife of Donald's brother Andrew, one of four MacGillivray brothers who came out to Dunmaglass in 1791. Hoping someone may know more.

Looking for information on Christopher Dunn, one of three Dunn brothers (others were William and Charlie) who were early settlers at South Side Harbor, having bought a grant from one of Colonel Hierlihy's band. When did they come out and from where? One source says Christopher the pioneer was married to a MacGillivray, no first name. A Margaret Dunn, daughter of a Christopher Dunn (the pioneer?) of South Side Harbor, married Donald the Bridge MacGillivray of St. Andrew's - Donald was born in 1824. A son of Donald and maggie was born in 1869. Trying to trace Maggie's line.
(Rankin's History of Antigonish County lists the children of Christopher but does not name Maggie Dunn MacGillivray.) Thanks.

One is the dau. of Jean-Baptiste Coste and Osite Levandier born I believe 18 Mar 1807 and the other is the dau of Jean-Baptiste Coste and Angelique Petitpas born I believe 6 Apr 1841. This last Jean Baptiste is the son of the first. I hope I don't have you as confused as I am. I would like to know who were their husbands and children because I am sure I am all messed up.
There was another Ludvine Devine who was the daughter of Edward Coste and labonne Mattie.
To many born to close together very easy to mess up.
