Is there an index of interments for Hillside Cemetery in Springhill?

I am trying to track down a death for Margaret (Butler) Faulds who was married to Andrew FAULDS. According to Andrew's death registration on novascotiagenealogy.com, he was buried in Hillside Cemetery and Springhill. Have been unable to find anything on Margaret after the census of 1881 where she is living with her family in Maccan. In 1891, Andrew remarried Amy Ripley and was listed as a widower, so I know Margaret died sometime within those ten years, but because those records are not available on NSG, I haven't been able to track down anything for her.

Thanks for any assistance

Would anyone in the Amherst, N.S. area be willing to take a digital photo of a specific "Kent" gravestone in Amherst Cemetery and email it to me? I have the location & description and a sketch of this stone (provided by the Cumberland County Museum)so I would suspect that it would not be hard to find. I would really appreciate having a photo of it. Also if you could tell me if their appears to be other related "Kent family" graves in the vicinity of this gravestone. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Janice Kent,
Georgetown, Ontario

I am compiling a complete genealogy on all the Mc/MacAloney families that entered Parrsboro, Cumberland Co., Nova Scotia from 1790 to 1850 from County Down and County Antrim in Ireland. My data is quite extensive in Canada and USA but have not been able to find parents for them in Ireland and at least 4 of the brothers strongly appear related. I would be so grateful for any help. The purpose of this project is to place the finished results in the Ottawa and Cumberland House Museums plus Cochester Museum and NS Archives and not for publication. Thank you.

Ella Studevan was born in Cumberland County, June 10, 1858 and died January 3, 1926 in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Murdock Studivan and Mary (MacGill) Studivan. She married Andrew William Ross who was born January 1, 1852. (His death notice from Massachusetts in 1949 said he was born in Halifax but he told everyone he came from Scotland.) He was the son of Murdock Ross and Amelia (Hangel) Ross.

Ella and Andrew were my grandparents. Does anyone have these ancestors in their roots?

Does anyone know of a Chappell burial site in Tidnish, NS. A newspaper article "History of Tidnish Bridge" written in the mid 1950's by Pearl Atkins and printed January 4, 1986 in the Amherst Citizen mentions this mystery site. It was supposedly located on land granted to James, son of Eliphalet & Catherina (Sommers) Chappell. The site as of the date of the story had been incorporated into the current Riverside Cemetary. Any details will be useful. Thanks, Mark Chappell

John AVERY, Partridge Island-Parrsboro 1776

Seeking information on what became of John AVERY & family after he sold his land grant in 1776/77.

In 1776, John AVERY, John LOCKHART & Jacob BACON received a land grant at Partridge Island [later Parrsboro]. They ran a ferry between Partridge Island to Windsor.

Two things happened soon after, that may be connected.

In Nov 1776, a James AVERY of Chignecto joined Col. EDDY in a rebellion against the King. James AVERY was taken prisoner and escaped.

In 1777 John AVERY sold his portion of the Partridge Island land grant to his partners.

Does anyone know where this John AVERY family moved? Or anything about the children of John AVERY?

Obituary - Eliza Smith, died 17 July 1935, d/o Samuel Mills, w/o Charles Albert Smith

From the Moncton Daily Times, published Friday, 19 July 1935, page 9:

Mrs. Albert Smith

Fort Lawrence, N.S., Jul 18 -- The death of Mrs. Eliza Smith, widow of the late Albert Smith, occurred at her home here Wednesday morning. The deceased had been in poor health for the past few months but her death came as a sudden shock to the community. The late Mrs. Smith was 87 years of age and was the daughter of Samuel Mills of Mapleton, N.S. She leaves to mourn 6 daughters, 4 sons, 31 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. The daughters are: Mrs. J.W. Carter, Point de Bute; Mrs. Osborne Trueman, Truemanville, Mrs. Charles Trenholm, Fort Lawrence, Mrs. George Trenholm, Watrous, Sask.; Mrs. Alfred Angus, Willmar, Sask., and Mabel at home. The sons are James, Amherst; Edgar, Black River, N.B.; John, Halifax, and Hubert, at home.

I looked around a bit on the Nova Scotia genealogy website, and found that Charles Albert Smith married Eliza Mills on 27 Dec 1866. Mrs. J.W. Carter is their daughter Alice, married 1890; Mrs. Osborne Trueman is their daughter Nora, married 1896; Mrs. Charles Trenholm is daughter Blanche, married 1912; Mrs. George Trenholm is daughter Julia, married 1908, and Mrs. Alfred Angus is daughter Annie, married 1904.

Samuel Mills died in 1921 in Cumberland County, at 102 years of age. The informant for the death record is his grandson, Edgar Smith.

Hi I am looking for info on Vautiers that lived in Springhill. My grandfather was Ivan Henry Vautier B.1902 D.1940.He was married to Ethel Irene Trowsdale b.Sept.8 1899 Died May21 1934. They had 4 daughters. Thelma,Reva,Elenor and Hattie.Thelma is the only one alive living in the USA.She was brought up at Bill Rectors after their parents died.Ivan Vautiers parents were John Henry Vautier and Hattie Henwood.Hattie Henwoods parents were Annie Pettigrew and Jesse Henwood. I have some info that I got from Vital statics and ancestry.ca where I have started a family tree. John Henry Vautier's father was also named John and his wife was Hannah? One record I found said John Henry was born in NFLD.1872cencus records and immagrated in 1897.The other says he was born in Halifax?Any info on the Vautiers would be great.I have more on the Henwood's and Pettigrews then Vautier's.The spelling of the name seems to vary also which makes it difficult to find info. Thank you

Trying to track down information on a child of the wife of Minor LEFURGY.

Accoring to novascotiagenealogy.com, Minor LEFURGY married Maude Helen REID, a widow, on 1 Jun 1917 in Cumberland County. Maude was listed as the daughter of William and Harriet MCLEOD. William's occupation was Steverdore. I believe this is the same Maude MCLEOD that was listed as Maud Alice MCLEOD, daughter of William (a Stevedore) and Harriet MCLEOD that married Alexander Irving REID 12 Dec 1912 in Pugwash. Alexander died 10 May 1914, leaving a widow and one baby daughter. Am trying to track down any information on their daughter.

Would appreciate any assistance.

Thanks in advance

From the 1901 census they had a large family of 18 children. Family lore has Robert (b.1852) a seaman, lost at sea around 1904. In the census 3 of his sons are also listed as sailors. I am trying to connect with anyone from this family to find any other details to the story. Such as, were any of the sons also lost with him? What was the name of the vessle?
Robert's son Melvin pasted on when his children were young and very little is known of the Anderson side of the family.
I have listed some of the spouses of Robert & Susan's children under surnames.
Any information is appreciated.

I am interested in the above gentleman and the area called Wallace Bay. Eventually where he lived was called Pleasant Hills. My ancestor John Crawford arrived with his wife Jane and three children, via ship from Ireland on or about 1820. He was married in Ireland to a Jane Goodwin and they had 8 children...6 boys and 2 girls. He died at Port Hill, Prince Edward Island at the residence of his son Henry, on January 24, 1877.

Their second son my ancestor was a Joseph Crawford born in Londonderry, Ireland 15 September 1818. He married Phoebe Peers [daughter of Ephraim Peers 1767-1843] date/location unknown, but presume it was Wallace Bay and they had 2 children, Jane Ellen and Daniel Peers my great grandfather. Joseph died in Wallace Bay on 25 July 1857 [cemetery records] or 25 July 1852 [gravestone]?? Phoebe died 1 May 1864 in Wallace Bay.

I would like to know if anyone knows of this family to exchange information. Joseph was a teacher in district # 21 of the south shore region according to our information....would like to confirm... If this rings a bell with anyone I would like to share info....
Mike Crawford Montana
Cumberland County history

I have written a book, presently with an agent/editor about the families listed above. It is called "Seven Crows A Secret" and will be published soon.

I am wondering if there will be any interest in having this book in the Amherst and region libraries. It is an historical narrative.

It mentions the two black slaves which were owned by Stephen Read and left to his sons in his 1800 will. They are not named but I believe are buried in the little gravesite on what is listed as "Read's Island" in your list of cemeteries.

As this home is now called Phillarik and owned by the Pedersons, I am wondering if the little graveyard was ever renovated. The last I saw it was in 1983 and I have not been in touch with them since. I have all the research material that came to me from the Blenkhorns in Amherst when I was writing the book. There was a "trunkfull" that was promised by one lady who died before I could meet her. I assume this material is with her family still.

I wanted to go to the Yorkshire reunion last year, but was unable to get an application for some reason and missed it.
I hear it was a wonderful event. Hoping to hear from you soon. Betty Morgan, Halifax.

He died 24 Mar 1932 in Port Greville. He married Alice Maud PETTIS 8 Sep 1880 in Port Greville.

Alice Maud PETTIS was born 23 Nov 1850 to John and Susan (SPICIER) PETTIS. She died 23 Oct 1951 in Port Greville.

In the 1901 census there is a Kate NEWCOMB listed in the home with them. Her relationship is listed as domestic. In the 1911 census it is daughter. It appears that Kate was actually the daughter of Alice's sister Annette (PETTIS) MOORE. Have not been able to find any information on the death of Annette or her husband, but Kate is listed as the informant on Alice's death as her daughter. On Fred's death the informant was Kate's husband, Hollis DEWOLF.

Did Fred and Alice adopt Kate?
I am looking for any information on James Russell and Evelyn Colborne (Nix). They were my Great Grandparents. Russell died in 1985 in Manitoba and Evelyn in 1966 (I think). They had three children, two boys and a girl.
Clare, Henderson and my grandmother Donna Justin Colborne.
Any information would be helpful.

Thank you for your time

Vanessa MacAloney

John Smith brother of Abner Smith of Malagash, Wallace, Pugwash, resided at Wallace Ridge around 1840-1866 with his wife Catherine, they had at least one off-spring. I'm pretty sure this John Smith died in 1866 as reported by a Catherine Smith his wife, and that his son John Smith was married in 1865 at Amhurst. His wife was I believe Annie Marie Rayworth. Any information regarding this family would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone have any information about Sarah Crossman, born about 1855, daughter of James and Jane(Bickerton)Crossman of Dorchester, Westmoreland, N.B. Sarah was married to Stephen Kent May 13, 1873 in Amherst, Nova Scotia, they had two sons George and Stephen. Her husband died in a workplace accident on July 8, 1878.(He was the son of Stutley(or Stukely) and Elizabeth(Worden)Kent. Sarah and Stephen's youngest son (Stephen) was given up for adoption to James and Helen Allen in 1880(renamed Arthur Allen). Sarah and son George were living with her widowed mother-in-law on the 1881 Nova Scotia Census. Only George is still living with Elizabeth Kent on the 1891 NS Census and I have not been able to find if Sarah remarried or if she died. Sarah's husband Stephen is buried with his parents but I have found no record indicating that Sarah is buried there too. (Sarah is the granddaughter of David and Sarah(Wry)Crossman and the great granddaughter of Samuel and Alice(Potter)Crossman). We believe Sarah’s son George moved to the States in adulthood. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for Clarks that went to Ontario in early 1817-8. John Clark married Ruth Hamilton. The Hamilton family could be related to Rice. After John married Ruth Hamilton Clark he married Charlotte Mills. (Blenkhorn Family)
I know a William Clark married Mary James as his second wife. Two brothers William and John Clark had land in Ontario in 1823. A William and Mary granted land.
I know my great great grandfather and mother were born in Nova Scotia. It could be John Clark and Ruth Hamilton from Digby. Lumley could be involved with the Clarks.

I recently came across the probate records of James Terrace (Terris/Trerice) of Sackville, N.S. which mention his brother in law David Mills. It lists David as a tanner in Nappan, N.S. David Mills married Ruth Trerice June 18, 1816. Is anyone aware of what happened to this family or their descendants?? David was listed as David Mills Jr. so he may have been the son of David Mills and Rebecca Holmes.

Hoping someone here can help me out please?

I am trying to track down some type of death information for a Margaret BUTLER that married an Andrew FAULDS. I found their marriage on novascotiagenealogy.com, but unfortunately, the document does not list her parents, and I am trying to determine if she is the daughter of Michael and Sarah BUTLER of Botsford parish, Westmorland County, NB. She appears in the 1881 census with Andrew and their children, and then Andrew remarried in 1891, so she died sometime within this ten year period, but I am unable to get those particular years on that site.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I might be able to track down some information on this person? I am not in NS, so am not very knowledgable on what is or isn't available for your province, so would appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

Thanks in advance

She was of Irish decent and born in Cumberland Co., around 1889. She later moved to New Brunswick and there married a Robert Odell of Golden Ridge, Carleton Co.
German Town Road? Heckbert?

Hi,

I believe there is a German Town Road located fairly close to Minudie NS. Does anyone know where the name originated from? Was there a German settlement there?

I am trying to find information on my GGGG grandparents, Edward Heckbert and his wife Dorothea (Klein) Heckbert, both of whom were of German descent. Edward was a foreign recruit in the British Army stationed at Halifax. He married Dorothea Klein in 1816 (her father was a Hessian soldier who settled in Nova Scotia rather than return to Germany). They had two children in Halifax and then Edward deserted from the army in 1818 (rather than return overseas). I have no idea where Edward and his wife and children were for the next twenty years or so, but believe they remained in Nova Scotia. I picked up their trail again when their daughter Mary Ann Heckbert married William Edward Sheffer in 1837 in Halifax. Then their son (my GGG grandfather) John Heckbert, married Nancy Read around 1838-1840. Nancy was from Minudie NS, daughter of John Read and Isabella (Donkin) Read. John and Nancy had a son who I think was born in Amherst NS in 1841 and then they moved to PEI. I have lots of information on John and Nancy Heckbert's descendants, but wonder where Edward and Dorothea Heckbert (their parents) lived when their children were young. I do have a death record for Dorothea Heckbert(called Dorothy) from the Presbyterian Witness. She died in October 1865 and was widowed at that time. No place of death was listed, however.

I suppose I am grasping at straws here but I wonder if Edward and Dorothea and their two young children might have settled in the Cumberland Country area (away from Halifax after Edward deserted) and wonder if they had any connection to the German Town Road.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice or information that might be of help to me?

Looking for any information on the descendants of Sarah E. Fitzpatrick who married John Helm circa 1879. Sarah, daughter of John Fitzpatrick and Mary Ann Butler, was born in New Brunswick circa 1855. John was born in Prince Edward Island circa 1852.

They appeared on the 1881 census in Amherst Shore with their daughters Mabel and Helena, as well as other family members. From 1891 through 1911 they appear in the census records for Tidnish, Cumberland County with their children Mabel, Helena Mary, Sarah, Charles Joseph, James Albert, John Frederick, Harold Agustus, Harriet Beatrice, Myra (possible alternate name Myrtle), William, Pearl, Percy, and Boston(possible alternate name Bordon).

According to novascotiagenealogy.com, Helena Mary Helm married William Henry McLennan in Amherst 12 Dec 1906, Charles Jospeph Helm married Gladys Levona Gowealt 30 Jun 1909 in Tidnish Bridge, and Harriet Beatrice Helm married Harry Frederick William Beckman 6 Dec 1913 in Amherst. Harold Agustus Helm died on 13 Dec 1943 in Pugwash. This is the only information I have been able to come up with with for these descendants of my great-great-great grandparents John and Mary Fitzpatrick.

If anyone has any information they can offer, I am more then willing to share the information I have on the Fitzpatrick's if you are interested.

Thanks!

Brown to NS

Hello, I have studied the Browns from Yorkshire for some time. William Brown b 1752 Yorkshire, came over with his wife , one dau, along with his younger brother James Brown(b 1757). The arrived in Nova Scotia 1774. I have looked at your Ann brown as possibly a sister to William-James Brown. William moved to Cape Breton, but had land holdings in Cumberland Co(NS) where his brother James Brown moved to. James married Sarah Harrison(her family came from Yorkshire also). William and wife "Jane" had more children born in Cape Breton and Halifax. Both William and James died in Cumberland Co NS.

Bruce C. Brown
<bcbrown44@hotmail.com>

Joseph Baxter b.1810 m. Charlotte Emily Finley b.1820 Amherst

Hello,
Looking for information about Joseph Baxter from Nova Scotia. He married Charlotte Emily Finley and I believe they had two children, John Trueman Baxter and Willis Baxter. There could be more of course, but those are the two I know about.

Apparently the family was related to or they were great friends of the Trueman family, as Willis was living with the Truemans when he was 18 in 1871. I believe Joseph died prior to 1861.

Any help will be appreciated. Willis Baxter is my great grandfather.

Thany you,

Frank
Does anyone have any information on Gabriel Purdy (1754 - 1841)who was a Loyalist from Westchester County, New York USA, who settled in Westchester, Nova Scotia following the American Revolution? I have tried without success to find a copy of his will from the Archives, but a Mr. Barry Smith has informed me that the records from Cumberland Co. are pretty much in shambles and are totally unorganized. I am not picky on info...I will gladly accept any information on Gabriel, Henry, Adolphus and George, if anyone would be willing to share. E-mail me if you prefer. Thanks so much. I really appreciate anyone's help!
Kimberlee
tkdarlin@telusplanet.net
