I'm looking for information on this family who lived in Barton area during the 1901 Census. They had three children at this time, Josephine, Benjamin and Gilbert. In the 1911 Census only Gilbert is with them. I know Benjamin married but what of the other two children? I have looked at the Comeau Family site and have that information. I would like to know if they married and to whom and when. Please reply to my new e-mail address. Caper1@comcast.net
Tom

Meteghan River

Mr. Lucien Belliveau, who was injured on the Lillian Blauvelt by the shears slipping and falling on him about four weeks ago, is quite well now.

We understand that Father Blanche formerly at the head of the faculty of St. Anne's College, Church Point, is in New Brunswick, and is to pay us a visit soon.

Clare should bestir herself and have a Township Exhibition. There is much to be gained from exhibitions and they act as incentive for push and energy amongst farmers, mechanics, in fact in all trades or callings. An agricultural society should be formed.

Potatoes are coming in fast. Capt. Cosman and Hon. A. H. Comeau are buying heavily for foreign markets. The potatoes this year are of exceptionally fine quality, and quantity is large.
**************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1902: October 16th issue

"Lillian Blauvelt" launched Meteghan River 1902

LAUNCH at METEGHAN RIVER

There was launched at Meteghan River last Thursday a fine three- masted schooner, built in the Hon. A.H. Comeau's shipyard for the Messrs. John and Webb Blauvelt and Tracey G. Hatfield, of Tusket.

The keel was laid early this year and to-day there is no finer specimen of marine architecture of equal tonnage than the "Lillian Blauvelt", named after Capt. Webb Blauvelt's wife. This schooner has three masts and three topmasts. Her length of keel is 96 feet; length overall, 122 feet; beam 28 feet 6 inch; depth of hold, 10 feet; tonnage 194; height from keelson to top of top-mast, 101 feet. She is copper and zinc fastened throughout, and her bottom is covered with metal sheathing. She has patent steering gear and patent windlass. The steering apparatus and all other iron work was made by the well known shipsmith, Mr. Thomas Woodworth, who has ironed a few score vessels of all sizes during his lifetime. The boss carpenter was Mr. Seraphin Comeau, whose work is always first class.

The model was made by Mr. Ben Robicheau, of Meteghan, who stands second to none as a master ship carpenter. This schooner will be a large carrier, and those who are capable of judging say she will be a good sailer. She is wire rigged and carried twelve sails. Her beam is so great she can carry quite a cargo on deck. Altogether she is a great credit to the builders, and to those who helped to put together such a fine piece of work. The master rigger was Mr. Lucias Belliveau of Church Point, who we are sorry to say, met with an accident by the falling on him of the sheers-- which had laid him up for a week during which time his place was ably filled by Mr. John Dugass, of Gross Coques. The boss of the sheathing was Mr. Joseph Blinn of Gross Coques. Mr. Frank E. Comeau painted the lettering and is to paint the cabin. The topside painting was done by Mr. Henry L. Doucet, well known for such work.

The Lillian Blauvelt will be commanded by Capt. Wm. A. Goodwin, of Lower Argyle, Yarmouth Co., a shipmaster of large experience and capabilities. May the best of luck attend him on the Lillian Blauvelt.
***********************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1902 October 2nd issue

I have a letter(copied from the Digby Courier) written by Fenwick W. Robbins, of Rossway, Digby County, in 1890, to his friend, Wallace C. Denton, of Waterford, Digby County, about his ( Mr. Robbins') trip across Canada to a teaching position in Comox,B.C. A very interesting look at cross-country travel and Canada of that time. Fenwick Robbins was a son of Jacob Robbins, of Rossway.
The reason that I copied the letter in the first place is because my wife is the great-grand-daughter of Wallace Chipman Denton, also a school teacher. If there are any Robbins researchers interested I will email a copy to them.
-- John Thurber .Email thurberj@ns.sympatico.ca

Meteghan,14th Novembre 1888

Meteghan

*****************************************************
From the newpaper: L'Evangeline, Digby, N.E., 14 Novembre 1888

Meteghan

***********************************************************
From the newspaper: L'Evangeline, Digby, N.E., 6 juin, 1888

Meteghan

A. Robichaud vivent encore.

****************************************************
From the newspaper:L'Evangeline, Digby, N.E., 2 Mai, 1888

James Power

I have just met with my birth family on my birth mother's side, great reunion, unfortunately my birth mother died before I was able to meet her. But I discovered that my birth father was, apparently, James Power, and I believe his middle name is/was Chester -- James Chester Power. He's probably in his 80s, he's apparently from Halifax though he met my mother Marion Jane Doucette (nee Thibault) in Ontario while she was there caring for her ailing mother Alma. They then apparently returned to Nova Scotia (not sure what city), my mother discovered she was pregnant and gave birth to me, Robert Timothy Doucette (birth name) on 2/22/57 at Digby Hospital and I was immediately given up for adoption, she didn't even take me home from the hospital. The only other thing I was told is that my father, James Chester Power, was or had been a mechanic.

Any info greatly appreciated, thank you!

Rob Tobin
scripts@earthlink.net

(The Solomon) Israel Family Newsletter

I am the editor for a national family newsletter for descendants of Solomon Israel and Mary Johnston who were married on Long Island, New York in the early 1700s. They subsequently moved to Virginia and lived in Albemarle County, and then to North Carolina in 1779. We are interested in finding other Israels who may be related to us. I am not a genealogist, but I am frequently asked if I can connect members of the family to others who are doing research on these families. If you are interested, please contact me to put on my list of family branches. We believe we are probably related to the Israel families of New England and Nova Scotia but have not been able to establish the link. Can you help?

Also, if anyone has any information on religious background of the Israel family in the 1600s or 1700s, we would be interested. Solomon and Mary were married in an Anglican Church. We publish our free newsletter three times each year and include articles of interest in addition to our own family news.
My Wife's Deveaus

I just finished reading through the "Salmon River News Oct. 15th, 1896" post, attempting to link up the various Deveaus mentioned therein with my wife's Deveaus, with the usual lack of success due to some common given names and my lack of info on where in NS some of my Deveaus lived. My Deveau problems are futher complicated by having inserted some erroneous data into my database back before I knew how important it was to keep track of sources.

So, I decided that maybe I should post my wife's Deveau line and see if anyone recognizes it and wishes to share information or make contact. My wife's line (with likely errors in the upper reaches) is:

1** Michel DEVEAU (07500) ( / /1663 - / / )
sp*Marie Madeleine MARTIN (07501) ( / /1663 - / / )
2** Jacques DEVEAU (07487) ( / /1699 - / /1760)
sp*Marie Anne POITIER (07488) ( / /1701 - / / )
3** Jacques DEVEAU (07469) ( / /1726 - 4/ /1770)
sp*Marie Madeleine ROBICHAUD (07470) ( / /1731 - / / )
4** Jean DEVEAU (07467) ( / /1761 - / /1829)
sp*Marie Salomon MAILLET (07468) ( / /1762 - / / )
5** Gabriel DEVEAU (07438) ( / /1789 - / / )
sp*Anne COMEAU (07439) ( / / - / / )
6** Gabriel DEVEAUX (00865) (3/12/1819 - 12/7/1891)
sp*Martha B.
Salmon River Digby Co. Oct. 13th

A literacy and dramatic society has been organized under the name of St. Alphonsus Union. President, Mr. A. Hashe: Vice-pres, Mr. George Thibault; Secretary, Mr. Alex M. Deveau; Treasurer, Mr. John F. LeBlanc; Executive Committee, Miss Neomise Deveau, Messrs. Ivan Pothier and Frank P. Deveau. The Union intends to give dramatic performances and lectures. Proceeds to go to charitable purposes. Further particulars later on.

Look out for tramps and burglars. Wednesday night last Councillor Perry's store was visited by those notables, and by means of a false key the door was opened, and from five to seven dollars in cash was taken, and it is thought some goods also. The next evening they paid a visit to Mr. Peter LeBlanc's store, entering by a back window, but no money could be found in the drawer. Yesterday two rascally looking individuals intended to establish their headquarters near Mr. Celestin Deveau's orchard, and had already kindled a fire, when Mr. Deveau went and drove them from their encampment. They had to dislodge and were seen about the village during the day. Look out for them, brave citizens; Dorchester Palace is the fit abode for such beings.

Mr. Frank Riordan, of Halifax, was at the Ocean View Hotel yesterday.

Mr. and Mrs. James Reeves, of Yarmouth, are here on a visit to their relatives and friends.

Miss Martha Deveau has gone back to Boston to resume her work.

Mrs. Timothy Deveau, of Yarmouth, accompanied by her daughter Miss Ambroisina Deveau, and Miss Belle Richard were on a visit here Sunday last.

Mr. V. A. Landry, proprietor of L'Evangeline, Weymouth Bridge, and Dr. Gaudet, of Meteghan, were the guests of Rev. F. Cote last Sunday.

Mr. Desirea Deveau is back from Wenham, Mass.

Messrs. Augustus Deveau, Edward Foley and Desirea Deveau went to New Tusket last Sunday.

Mr. Frank Melanson who was sick with slow fever, is speedily recovering.

Quite a nimber sick in this place at present. Mr. Timothy Melanson; Lenie Mallet child of Mr. George Mallet; Freddie Deveau, son of Mr. Peter M. Deveau; Eugene Foster, son of Capt. Charles Foster; Ambroise Deveau son of Mr. Volusien Deveau; and at the moment of writing these notes I learn that Mrs. Peter M. Deveau is very sick with diphtheria.

Asleep in Jesus. Mary Rose beloved child of Mr. Frank P. Deveau, proprietor of the Ocean View Hotel, bid adieu to this "Vale of Tears" and entered into life eternal, Saturday 10th inst. at the tender age of 2 years. Sweet and tender flower, your immaculate calyx was not yet soiled by the foul breath of passions when you were called to occupy a throne on the right hand of the Lamb. Console yourselves, dear parents, your child now possesses a crown that surpasses in splendor all the glory and treasures of this world.

ABNER
***********************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1896: Oct. 15th issue

Salmon River, Digby Co.

April 27.-----

The schooner built under the supervision of Mr. W. Raymond, of Port Maitland, for Councillor A. Perry, was launched Saturday, April 22nd. A vast multitude gathered to witness the fine spectacle. She is called the Hattie P. after Mr. Perry's daughter. She is altogether a beautiful vessel and is a credit to the builder. The cabin is very large and is fitted with every desirable accommodation.

Mr. Freeman Deveau of Mavillette, met with a very painful accident last week. While out shooting wild fowl his gun bursted, shattering his hand and injuring his arm. Timely aid arrived to his assistance and he was taken to his house. Dr. F.S. Wade, of Port Maitland, being sick and unable to attend, Dr. J.H. Harris, of Yarmouth, was called and under his skillful hand the wound was soon dressed. It is feared that lockjaw would set in, but the latest report gives it that he was a little better.

We have to record the death of Mr. Henry Boniface, of this place, which occurred Sunday, Apr. 25th at the advanced age of 88 years.

Mr. Luke LeBlanc, who was taken to his home as dead last week, is slowly recovering.

Mr. John C. LeBlanc is very sick.

Mrs. Frank Doucet has recently removed to Yarmouth.
***************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1897: April 29th issue

Looking for confirmation that Minnie Dale WILSON born NS Oct 1881 (1911 census) or 26 Oct 1880 (Rootsweb WC db) who married Jame FRANKLIN 1 Jun 1904 (NS Vital records online) aged 23 and was widowed in Oct 1936 when he died in North Range, Digby, is the same Minnie who supposedly married Alden HEIGHT and lived in Winchester New Hampshire around 1942.
Several WorldConnect db seem to believe Minnie and Alden married in 1932 but that would make two males bigamous, Alden still being married to Christine McGREGOR at this stage (and appearing with her in New Hampshire directories), and James not having yet died.
Both Alden and Minnie appear to have died in Digby as the SSDI has a record for May 1967 for Minnie HEIGHT, and one in Dec 1968 for Alden HEIGHT, both with references to Canada and US Consulate as last residence.
Would love to get these dates straightened out and the people involved confirmed.
My relation is Alden's first wife Christina McGREGOR

Regards
Lorna
http://familytree.lornahen.com/sphenderson.htm

I will pay for the time as well for the access charge and the copy fees.
The deeds would be for the surname of Winslow in Digby, first names being Daniel, Joseph and James. I am not sure how the records are labeled or how they are searched. But if someone could please help me with this i would be most greatful!! My direct email is smmetcalf20@aol.com
Thanks in advance.
Steve M

They are my mother's half sisters (we are sure their names are Patricia and Rosalie (also called Miki), their mothers name is Yvonne (nee: Sanders). The person who posted this original message name is Ed Gardini.

Joseph Francis (also known as Rector - or Rex) Muise was born in Concession, Digby Co. Nova Scotia on August 13, 1916. He passed away in August 1967 in B.C.

If you have ANY information PLEASE let me know.

I found something for Byron Ladd Marshall on ancestry.com but his birth date is listed as being in 1892 in Weymouth, NS. The above census says he was born about 1895....If anyone has run across this family in their research, I would be glad to hear from you.

Solomon Bunnel and family went to Weymouth Bridge, Sissaboo area around 1783. The family seems to have resided there until shortly after January 1794 when they left the area due to a family tragedy (son accidentally shot his fiance). Solomon's daughter, Anne, married Jonathan Bedford UE. Jonathan was also in the Digby area around 1785 -1790ish. Their daughter, Nancy, was baptized at Digby. Would very much like to correspond with anyone having information regarding Jonathan BEDFORD, Anne and family. Also after much research, I have been unable to find where Solomon BUNNEL, wife Anna (Beardsley) and children went to when they left Nova Scotia! Anyone out there able to help me find this family?

Thanks so much.
Calgary, Canada

Salmon River, Digby Co.

June 8.--- We have to record the death of Mr. Luke LeBlanc of this place, which occurred quite suddenly last Saturday. Mr. LeBlanc, though not very smart since a few weeks, had risen as usual and taken his breakfast with the rest of the family, and about half an hour after he was sitting on the couch, he fell unconscious and there breathed his last at the advanced age of 82 years. The funeral took place Monday morning, and was attended by a large number. Sunday evening Mrs. Luke LeBlanc, widow of the above named Mr. LeBlanc was all at once taken sick. She fell down unconscious as if in a swoon and it was thought she would die. The Priest was at once sent for and he gave the Sacrament of Extreme Unction. Toward morning she gradually recovered and was able to speak a little. She had another attack during the day but the last report was that she was getting a little better.

Mr. Philip L. LeBlanc came home from Gloucestor, Mass., in time to see his father before he died.

Mrs. Denis Surette, of Eelbrook Yarmouth Co., is visiting her parents and friends.

Miss Leonora Deyean is back from the States since a few weeks ago.

The schr. Hattie P., Capt. Frautent, is in the harbor.

Inspector Morse is around visiting the schools in this district.

Miss Ambroisine Deveau, of Yarmouth, is visiting her uncle, Mr. Hilaire Martin.

We are glad to see the Rev. Fr. Daly, of Meteghan, about again his long illness. He was yesterday on a visit to our Priest, the Rev. A.B. Cote.
***********************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1897:June 10th issue

I am looking from information on Phebe Catherine Edison born in New Jersey in 1822 and lived in the Chatham, Morris County, New Jersey area her whole life. Also in the same town, there is an Abraham Edison listed in the 1840 census. Have reason to think that they are related to the Edison family that moved from New Jersey to Digby, Nova Scotia as loyalists. I must assume that some family members either returned to NJ or perhaps John Edison had siblings who did not leave New Jersey. Any help appreciated.
Louis Pictou drowned 1893

DROWNING ACCIDENT

An Indian named Louis Pictou was drowned near Digby Gut (east side) abreast of Point Prim light yesterday morning. It appears that the unfortunate victim and his step-son, Peter Muise, had been out in their canoe for the purpose of shooting porpoise. They were only a short distance from shore but the water was deep. Muise says that a fierce shark put in an appearance and began an attack on the canoe, the brute succeeded in putting his head throught the side of the frail craft. Seeing the shark's head on the inside of the canoe, Pictou grasped his rifle and fired the contents through the head of the monster which resulted in the shark disappearing from sight.
As he never resumed the attack it is thought he was killed outright. Pictou, after firing the shot, fell overboard in a fainting spell, it is supposed from fright. The poor fellow never arose again after going under for the first time.

The moment the shark struck the canoe, Muise jumped overboard and clung to the side of the craft. He was rescued in a very exhausted condition by Peter Globe, another Indian, who was farther off shore in his canoe. Globe furnished the Telegram with the particulars of the accident.

When the tide ebbed, Pictou's body was found among some kelp right where the accident occurred. The body was not disfigured.

Major Daley, coroner, held an inquest and a verdict of "accidental drowning" returned.

The remains are to be interred in the cemetry of St. Patrick's church to-day. Pictou was a great favorite among his tribe -- the Mic-macs. --- Digby Telegram
*******************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1893: Aug. 10th issue
