CATHERINE M. GILLIS, 99, GOLD STAR MOTHER

Goffstown, N.H. - Catherine M. (MacLewllan) Gillis, of Goffstown, 99, died Saturday, three days short of her 100th birthday, in Bedford, N.H., following a brief illness. Mrs. Gillis, a homemaker, lived in North Quincy for 74 years before moving to Goffstown.

She was a Gold star mother during World War II. Her first son, John Gillis, a U.S. Army ranger, was killed in action in 1943 in Italy. Subsequently, her other five sons joined the Army and served in World War
II, the Korean War or the Vitenam War.

She was born in Deepdale, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. When she was 18, she came to Boston, where she met and married Duncan A. Gillis, also of Cape Breton. He is now deceased. She became a U.S. citizen in 1951.

Even in her 90s, Mrs. Gillis remained active and last year visited her family home and birthplace in Cape Breton. She also attended the annual summertime music festival in Inverness.

Mrs. Gillis was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

She is survived by five son, James Gillis of Braintree, Raymond Gillis of Scituate, George Gillis of Newport News, Va., David Gillis of Laguana Niguel, Calif., and Francis Gillis of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Dorothy Momaney of Quincy and Theresa Naser of Goffstown; a sister Dolena MacLellan of Cape Breton; 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass. will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church, Quincy. Burial will be in Blue Hill cemtery, Braintree. Visiting is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday in the Keohane
funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., Wollaston.
