Rev. John Butler of Windsor, Nova Scotia mid 1800's

Hi,

I seek information concerning the family of a Rev. John Butler of Windsor, Nova Scotia.

His youngest daughter Clara Butler married Robert Ruickbie on December 24, 1881 in St Johns, Newfoundland - according to a wedding announcement published in a local paper at that time.

Clara was described as, a spinster at 29 years of age, and the youngest daughter of the late Rev. John Butler.

The 1901 Census of Canada has Clara, Robert, and family living in Toronto, Ontario. Her listed birth date shows March 20, 1853.

So obviously John died after June 1852 and before December 1881.

That’s all I’ve got to work with, and I do realize it’s more than a bit thin.

I’ve beat the Newfoundland and Nova Scotia on-line stuff to death – Nix!

But perhaps there is someone out there that has knowledge of this family.

I’d be more than happy to share what I have on Clara and Robert’s line forward in time.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Larry
Looking for the parents of Barnabas Malone who was born about 1775 and married Mary Welsh in 1801 in Argyle. I have been told the father is a Barnabas Malone who fought at Bunker Hill with the 52nd Regiment of Foot, possibly with Capt Thomas Phillip's company. The person who told me this isn't sure where it came from.

I'm looking for the family of Charlotte (Lottie) Workman, my grandmother, of Westville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Workman. I believe they married in 1871. There may have been a brother Thomas, as well. And the names Henry and Bud come to mind... but I don't know why. G'ma/Lottie married William Alfred Reid, and had a daughter Emma and a son Allister (my father). I remember visiting the Workman house a few times in the early 1960s, and there was a girl nickmnamed "Cookie" (whose real name, I think, was Margaret or Elizabeth), and in the backyard was a pet turtle with a wire attached to its shell.

The Ontario death register for his 27 Nov 1903 death lists as his place of birth something that looks like "Co.Frontenac."

Our family records indicate that Henry was born at Halifax, and additionally, Ontario census list Nova Scotia as his place of birth. Was there an area around Halifax in 1829 known as "Frontenac"??

Thank you for any help you can offer.
Barbara

Marriage Bonds - general question

I know someone should be able to help me, with all the back & forth about marriage bonds, slips etc...recently......I obtained a copy of my ancestors marriage bond from 1835 (thank you NSARM! Beautiful copy!)Anyway for those of you who are familiar with these the first line starts "Know all men by these presents, that We, (names inserted) are held and firmly bound to His Exellency Major General Sir Colin Campbell, K.C.B. blah blah blah...." then continues to talk about paying him 100 pounds, etc...

Second paragraph talks about "The condition of this obligation.....why the said (insert names of bride and groom) may not lawfully solemnize, balh blah blah....and if the above bounden (names inserted from 1st paragraph) do save harmless the said Sir Colin Campbell.." etc...

OK - here is my question. The Marriage bond is for Charles Creighton and Joanna Kenney. The names inserted in the FIRST paragraph are "Charles Creighton of Sheet Harbour Mariner and John Adams of Halifax Grocer"

The SECOND paragraph names are obviously the bride and groom, the second set of names (as 'bounden') are Charles Creighton & John Adams.

The only signature is that of John Adams.....WHO IS JOHN ADAMS?! I mean of course, the significance of this third person other than the bride or groom, who is clearly making himself responsible for the cost of marriage (I think) by 'binding' himself to Colin Campbell. Is there a normal person who asumes this role? John Adams is not Joanna's father or either of her stepfathers.....is he just a witness that could have been grabbed off the street? HELP!

Thanks, Laurie

BRAGDON

Hello,

I am researching a BRAGDON family who lived in Truro, Nova Scotia during the late 1890s and early 1900s.

My great-grandfather, Arthur Frederick McCann, had a sister Mary Elizabeth "Bessie", who married Winfield Scott Bragdon on July 1, 1896. They lived in Truro, Nova Scotia.

They had four sons, Clyde, Ralph, Edward & Willis. Edward died at the age of 8 of diabetes in 1910. In 1963, Ralph was in Drinkwater, SK and Clyde was in Winnipeg per Ralph's late birth registration. I have no idea what happened to Willis. I have a photo of Clyde, Ralph and Willis and would love to find a photo of Winfield and Bessie (particularly Bessie).

Bessie died on December 16, 1918 and is buried in the Robie Street Cemetery, Truro. Winfield S. remarried to Annie Barnes in 1924. Winfield and Annie both died in 1948 and are both buried in the same plot as Bessie.

Winfield's parents were Seth P. & Katherine (Frizzle)(Mosher)Bragdon. Seth was born in Maine.

Here is Katherine/Catherine's death notice & obit:

Bragdon - At Young Street March 27, Catherine Bragdon age 84 years and six months. Funeral this afternoon at 2:30

Truro Daily News, March 29, 1909 page 4, Column 2

Obituary:

Mrs. S.P. Bragdon died in Truro March 27.

A venerable resident of Truro, Catherine, relict of the late S.P. Bragdon, passed away on Saturday, March 27 at the great age of 84 years and six months. The deceased had made her home with her son W.S. Bragdon, South Young Street, Truro. In the immediate family to mourn the death of this good woman, there are left four daughters, Mrs. Jas. F. Fisher, Medicine Hat, Alberta; Mrs. A. Taylor, Dorchester, Mass; Mrs. A.B. Lusby in Parrsbo
(sic) and Mrs. John Phinney, Truro and one sone W.S. Bragdon, Truro. The funeral took place on Monday, March 29.

Truro Daily News, March 30, 1909 page 4

Also, I found this, but I'm not sure how this person is related

Died:

BRAGDON - At Upper Prince Street, Oct 22nd, F.H. Bragdon aged 84 years.
Funeral tomorrow at 2:00 pm.

Truro Daily News October 22, 1897 page 4

Does anyone know where I might find descendants of this couple? I have not found the BRAGDON surname in Nova Scotia in 2008.

Regards,

Pamela Wile
Dartmouth, NS

Looking for any information or possible relatives of my grandfather, Charles Harold White, born in Nova Scotia c. 1895, father possibly Arnold, mother Annie (from 1911 census). I can't find any record of his birth, death or marriage in Canada or the UK and have very little information about him. He was possibly an only child, very athletic, played baseball and soccer or rugby. Possibly a merchant seaman, he ended up in England sometime after WW1 and apparently married my grandmother Doris Mary Overed. They had only one child, my mother, Ethel Laurane b. 1924 in Manchester, Lancs. The somewhat unique spelling of her second name may be a family tradition? Other occupations he had were cap cutter and compositor/typographer. He may have apprenticed in Boston. I would be most grateful for any information.

Baptismal lookups - NSARM microfilm 1852

It was suggested I contact the Archdiocese of Halifax for help, but they tell me they have no access to these records and I can find them on microfilm at NSARM. Of course, I live in the western US! I am looking for copies of baptismal records of baptisms done by Rev. John Carmody in 1852, prior to St. Peter's being built. I have evidence that Ellen Creighton and her sister Mary Anne (daughters of James Charles or Charles Creighton and Joanna Kenney) were baptized Roman Catholic on 26 Sep. 1852 in Sheet Harbour. Ellen was actually baptised at St. Pauls in 1836, the year of her birth, as Anglican (and shows up as Church of England in future census')but apparently was re-baptised, I am not sure why (as she shows up in future census' as Anglican and was married a an Episcopal church). I believe the source of this info came from Carmody's register of baptisms. If anyone is in to doing lookups here I would be forever grateful!

Laurie

I am trying to trace my uncle's paternal ancestry. My uncle was born out of wedlock in 1925. Neither his mother or father wanted him and my uncle grew up in orphanages and foster homes. He was never adopted. While my uncle grew up he had contact with both his mother and his father, but after becoming an adult he has never had any contact with any members of his families.

My uncle believes he knows his father's name, occupation, and where he was from, but since he was told it while a child he can not be sure. His parents neither baptised him or filed a birth certificate for him.

I am having a very hard time finding any information on his father. Ideas on how to proceed?

He was first mentioned as Phillip Finlay MacLeod in the book "Road to Tarbot" as the father of Donald MacLeod born 1811. According to the Donald and Christy Ann (Buchanan) MacLeod family section, his wife was Mary MacDonald.

One day months after first reading that first part, I was just scanning through the book and came across a section belonging to that of the family of one of my ancestors' sister-in-law (Jane MacLean). So I decided, why not read a bit further, One of her brothers married an Ann MacLeod, who was listed as the daughter of Finlay and Mary (MacDonald) MacLeod.

I am sure that it is the same person and that Phillip/Finlay being named differently was just another error in my early copy of the book.

I am wondering if anyone has a Finlay / Phillip Finlay / Phillip MacLeod that fits this description on their tree or has any valuable information about.

If anyone does happen to have him on their tree or have any info to share, please post a reply.

Ryan W.
great-grandson of Elizabeth MacDonald 26/08/1915--15/01/2000
daughter of Neil John MacDonald 12/10/1881--12/10/1964
son of Mary MacLeod ?/03/1860--5/03/1942
daughter of Donald MacLeod ?/09/1811--1891
son of Phillip/Finlay MacLeod of Scotland

P.S. Some of Ann's descendants were MacEachern's, Murdoch Sr. & Jr. etc

St Clair / Sinclair

I have just recently found my gggrandfather George Sinclair (St Clair) listed in the Halifax, Nova Scotia City Census 1901. It lists family members as follows:
George b. 1857 NS head,
Elizabeth b. 1864 NS wife,
John b. 3/23/1883 NS son,
Gertrude b. 9/20/1886 NS daughter,
George b. 7/3/1888 NS son,
William b. 9/2/1889 NS son.
It is believed that the sons & daughter may have not stayed in Canada, but emmigrated to Massachusetts and California. Son John, did stay in Halifax until his death in 1915. Although they used St. Clair as their family name, it appears that most records show the name as Sinclair.
I would love to connect/share with anyone that may know something about this family.

Tuesday, July 19, 1927 Bridgewater Bulletin

Capt. G. A. Slawenwhite
MAHONE BAY, July 9. -
The remains of the late Captain George A. Slawenwhite, whose death
occurred at his home, 122 Henry Steet, Halifax, on July 6th, arrived
from Halifax yesterday morning and the funeral took place from the
residence of Mrs Slawenwhite's sister, Mrs Eli Winters at two o'clock
yesterday afternnoon. After a short service at the house by Rev E. V.
Nonamaker, Rev Canon Harris and Rev Carter Windsor, the funeral cortege
proceeded to St John's Lutheran Church, where the full burial service
was held. Members of Charity Lodge, A.F. and A. M. attended the funeral
and held their service at the grave. The beatiful floral tributes were
in such profusion that a large car was needed for their conveyance. The
bearers were, Messrs. Dr W. N. Cochrane, H. H.S. Eisenhauer, H. E.
Lohnes, and R.E. Hyson.
The late Captain Slawenwhite was born at Mahone Bay, sixty-eight years
ago. He is survived by his widow (nee Eliza Young) daughter of the late
Mr and Mrs Peter Young. At an early age he followed the call of the sea,
which he continued for many years, sailing to all parts of the world and
on these voyages Mrs Slawenwhite always accompanied him.
About twenty-five years ago he retired and opened up a boot and shoe
business in this town, which he carried on for a few years. He moved to
Halifax about sixteen years ago, and since then, up to a few weeks of
his passing, he had been in Goverment service.

Military Service Calvary 1903-8 question

Distant relative Paul Emerson Harris signed a US WWI draft registration form in June of 1917, stating he had previously served as a private in the Calvary, Nova Scotia, for 4 years. The intersting thing is, he was born 1888, and states he emigrated in 1904. This is in sync with a ship manifest of The Boston which arrived in March of 1904, which shows a Paul Harris onboard. However, this would mean he joined the Calvary at 12 years old? Unlikely! How could I search the Calvary rolls around this time frame, to see if he actually served, and when he was released from service? Thanks!

I am researching William Gordon who was born ~1761 location unknown, married Mary Brown in 1786 at Christ Church, Montreal, Quebec, and died 1806 in Montreal. Could he have originated from Nova Scotia? I would imagine that his family members were either Loyalists or Highlanders, since they were Scots living in French Canada. Or is that a poor assumption? When did the Highlanders move to Quebec? Any guidance will be greatly appreciated! I am stumped with this family line!
Thanks

Nov 25, 1834 in Shelburne, died July 19, 1875 in Lunenburg Co.

James Norman was married to Mary Ann Noble/King and their son was James Alexander Norman, b. 1869 in Liverpool, Queen's Co., died 1960, West LeHave.

James Alexander married Emma Loretta Wagner, and is my great grandfather.

There seems to be nothing on the Normans of the South Shore!

Trying to research grandfather Henry NMI Mundell from Sand Point, wife Harriett Matilda Loach Parks, and his father Edward Mundell from England. Had a big family. Edward possibly came over around 1825 or earlier; lived at least until last child (Clementina) was born 1860s. Wife Margaret was a widow a long time in Sand Point, lived with a Mrs. Carrigan. My father, Joseph Mundell, was a son of Edward's son Henry, and he left Guysborough Co. and settled in Barrington, Shelburne Co. Had one brother, George, Mulgrave and a half sister Weselena (Wessie) Parks Carter.

Awhile back I was lucky anough to stumble across a section of rootsweb that had a variety of death notices listed for Nova Scotia. Since I am not from this province, it was a valuable tool in locating this information. I am trying to find my way back to that page, and unfortunately, can not seem to locate it now. Is anyone able to provide me with the link for it so I can see if I will be fortunate again in finding information I need?

Thanks in advance

Barbrick Turple

I have hit a brickwall with researching my g.g.Grandmother Grizella Barbrick b. 1806, Admiral Rock. Grizella may have had a brother called Mathew Benoni and possibly her Father was also called Benoni. One of her children has Benoni as a middle name which makes me think this could be right. Grizella married John Jacob Turple abt. 1834. Is anyone else researching this family, as I would be grateful for any help.
Lorraine

"Bann" Scottish term?

I'm working on Nova Scotia ancestors, primarily Frasers and McPhees, and found these statements:

"...son of Donald Fraser (Bann) and Janet (McKay) Fraser."

"He identified his Grandmother as having been a (Bann) Fraser."

I don't have a clue what the word "Bann" means. I only see it used with the Fraser name.

Does this make perfect sense to any of you? I went to bed last night with Bann rumbling through my brain. Help!

Jan
Online death records?

I am trying to track down information on a DEVARENNE family member who possibly died in NS sometime between 1901-1908. I tried checking novascotiagenealogy.com, but their death records go from 1864-1877 and then from October 1908-1955. Does anyone know how or where I could find out about deaths for the years between 1877-1908? I am not in Nova Scotia, so have no clue where to begin looking for this information, so any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
