Classification: Query
Surnames: Smith, Ward, Nolter, Mason
Hello George,

I have information about the ancestors of Sarah Smith, which I recently gathered at the NS Archives, from the booklet titled "Eisenhauer, Frizzell, Mason, Smith, Boutilier" self published by author Dorothy Bezanson Evans, who also published a book called "Hammonds Plains, The First 100 Years". (This book is available through the Halifax Public Library). The booklet is at the archives and the call number is V/F Vol. 532 #17.

Sarah belongs to the same Smith line as my husband, through her brother James Smith, they were amoung 9 known children of Ebeneezer Smith, Jr and Margaret Mason, and all the information I have was taken from the above booklet.

Ebeneezer Smith, Jr, born unknown and died in 1867 was the son of Ebeneezer Smith, Sr and Mary UNKNOWN, they were loyalists who came from the USA.

Eben Jr, married Margaret Mason, d/o George Frederick Mason (Mother Unknown), she was born about 1792 and died in Hammonds Plains Dec 21, 1877 at the age of 85. They had a marriage bond dated Dec 14, 1812.

A note in the booklet states that Cannon Harris, who gathered lots of information on Lunenburg Families, believed that the Mason patriarch came from Belfast to the Channel Islands to Danzig, where he married the daughter of the Mayor, they then moved to the USA with three sons. He had no supporting documents for this, the info came to him by word of mouth. I have not followed this line yet, so someone may have more information confirming or disputing his theory.

This is the information I wrote down from the booklet on the children of Ebeneezer Smith and Margaret Mason. Some lines have further descendants in the booklet.

1. Maria Smith, b. 1814, m. 1851 to John Frizzel

2. Ebeneezer Smith III, b. 1815, m. Oct 22, 1839, to Ann Melvin d/o Jacob Melvin & Mary Floyd

3. John Smith, b. May 24, 1816, bap. Sep 21, 1816

4. Elizabeth Smith, b 1817, bap. St Paul's Halifax, Aug 22, 1818, m. Thomas Pace

5.Peter Smith, b. 1824, m. Mary Metier

6. James Smith, b. 1825, d. May 22, 1921, m. Mary Ann Nolter of Shubenacadie, (she b. abt 1827 & d. Dec 1, 1819 age 93). * My husband's line, would appreciate any information on the Nolter family that anyone can forward.

7. Sarah Smith m. Charles Ward

8. George Smith, m. Sarah UNKNOWN

9. Jacob Smith, b. 1838, d. 1865 at Boston of Typhus Fever, m. Margaret Ann McKay, Dec 24, 1857 at Hammonds Plains.

A further note states that the Baptist Church in 1848 had the following children listed to this couple, William, Peter, George, James, Emily & Margaret.

The death notice for Margaret Mason Smith states: "Died Dec 21, 1877 at H.P., Margaret, relict of the late Ebeneezer Smith in her 85th year, leaving 15 children, 106 grandchildren and 113 great grandchildren - - a consistent member of the Baptist Church since her union with it in 1823."

I have 4 children listed to Ebeneezer Smith Sr and Mary.....

Ebeneezer, Mary, Christian and Nathaniel (married to Mary Mason, sister to Margaret). Eben Jr and Nathaniel were the ones who were early settlers of Hammonds Plains.

That is about all the information I have so far. Good luck on your search for the Ward side.

Happy Holidays!
Dorothy
