Hanes/Haines/Heans

Joseph, this surname appears in many forms in the early records of Hants co. There may have been a number of settlers by this name however the family which owned land in the Kennetcook area of Douglas Township was undoubtedly descended from Joseph Haines who first appears in the records as a farmer at Windsor, NS. (1791 Assessment) The Nmva Scotia Land Records include a warrant in favour of Joseph Haines for 500 acres in Hants Co., for himself and family-this document is dated 21 March 1810. In 1814 there were 900 acres in the Dist of Colchester, Halifax co., laid out for Joseph, John and William Haines. (Certificate #539) John Heans was shown as a farmer of Douglas with 29=00 ares and William Heans, also a farmer fo Douglas was shown with 200 acres would be the share of the father Joseph. Further research will be necessary to confirm if this grand land in the Colchester District was ever occupied by the Hanes/Haines family.

Joseph Hanes b c 1740; buried 8 Jan 1820 Douglas Township; he was probably buried in the WilliamSmith Esq. Burying Ground in Kennetcook, NS in accordance with his will dated 29 March 1818, where one of his children had been buried; marr. Jane unk b c 1757 d 16 Jan 1845, age 88, he was listed as a farmer at Windsor, NS in 1791 and was probably a tenant on one of the grants made to Halifax residents or military officials; the land tecords suggest that he moved to te Kennetcook area in 1810 although he may have been leasing a farm in that area before he applied for the 500 acres grant in 1810; he was appointed pound-keeper for Douglas Township in 1800. (RG, 34, 313/4 (178-1800) PANS. Joseph made his will on 29 Mar 1818 and it was proved at Windsor, NS 24 Jan 1820; (HCEP 173A) the names of his children will be given as they were named in the will.

Children of Joseph and Jane Hanes;
1. child died before 29 March 1818 and buried in the Wm Smith Burying ground (probably the old cemetery on edge of Stanley Airport)
2 William bapt 1790 (St Pauls Anglican, Halifax, NS--missionary records); d 10 March 1876 age 86; marr Amy Anthony b 17 Apr 1790; in 1810 his father applied for 500 acres in Hants co., for himself and his family; in 1814 thre was a warrant for 200 acres for Wiliam Hanes but the land was located in Halifaz co.,; in the will of Joseph Hanes of 1818 his son William was to receive a small young horse worth about 10lbs; the will also rferred to the 200 acres which had been obtained from his son William which suggests that the son had taken up a trade and was no longer engaged in farming; the research of A. David Hanes of Barre, Ont. shows that William left descendants.
Children of William and Amy (Anthony) Hanes;
1a Joseph b 1813 d 29 Dec 1871 age 58 m Jane unk b 1815; d 3 July 1875 age 60; Joseph's will was dated 15 Dec 1871 (HCEP 997A) children 1 b Mary Eliza, 2b Lydia Olive.

2aNoah Hanes b 1 Sep 1815; d 11 Aug 1902 age 87; m 31 jan 1850 Rachel unk, b 1825; d 20 Aug 1907 age 82; Noah may have been married previously; Noah and daughter Mary are buried in the Anglican Cem at Upper Kennetcook, NS.
Children of Noah Hanes;
1b Haddie m Albert Ettinger. children surname Ettinger Ernest, Ruby.
Further to that 1901 census. According to the 1911 census There was a daughter Laura Seaman born Sept. 1902.

Some notes -

The 1891 census has Elbert, who on the 1901 census is Dilbert, and on the 1911 census is Delbert. His birth gives his name as Delbert Leroy. On the 1891 census there is a Janie, who in 1901 is Sarah J.
In 1891 there is a Leander, who in 1901 is now Marsden.

1891 has a Dora, who in 1901 looks like Minnie D. The Oressa on the 1901 census, is Pearl in 1911. Her birth gives her name as Oressa Pearl.

That should be the children.

I am trying to workout a puzzle with the Blois, Terhune and Seaman link. I have Mary Janet Terhune (1863- ? ) who married in 1882 to Robert Blois (1857-1892) by what I understand Mary Janet married about 1894 Thomas C. Seaman and they lived in Nine Mile River, N.S. in 1901

My puzzle is trying to confirm what childrem Robert and Mary J. Blois had and what children Thomas and Mary J. Seaman had.

I wonder why Ella Sophia, born 1869 gives her birthdate as 1840 in the 1901 census! It's not even the correct date. Ella Sophia's birthdate was August 29th 1869, not June 14th 1840!
Her age on their marriage record is closer at least. It has the couple being 17yrs apart in age at least. Whereas the 1901 census shows them as the same age!

Thanks for your reply. I have the marriage of Francis Salter and the bond should read Mary Kerr but there was an error when it was recorded online at N.S.H.V.S. Actually I think on the bond it has Carr. I'm still trying to locate their son Thomas.
Thanks

I found the marriage of Francis Salter and Mary Currey in 1813 in the NS Vital Statistics page on line. They were married in Cumberland Co. Then check the deaths as I think I found Francis' death in 1866 at the age of 83. Looks like it was signed by a son, John Salter but not sure.
Good luck

Hi Kim. I just started working on this family as John Salter comes from my Kerr line. I did find him and Mary in the 1900 US Census for Maine with 2 sons both born in Nova Scotia. So, he must have died shortly after and she came back to Nova Scotia. In the 1900 US census the boys names are Raymond and Ford.
Dawn

I'd love to know what Catherine Florence Wilmot was like. Frederick AL Wilmot's first wife, Maud, died when Catherine and her brother John Wilmot were very young. They were raised by Maud's parents. Frederick ALWilmot re-married a woman named Bernice Hawkins from Charlottetown, PEI. Frederick and Bernice moved to Sommerville, Massachusetts where Frederick's Mother, Isabella and his brother, William were living. They later moved up to Portland, Maine where they raised a large family. I have gone to South Portland and visited their grave sites. I know children were often raised by in-law families and suspect that religion may have played a part as the Osbornes were Catholic and the Wilmot's were Church of England. I make no judgements. I would love to know anything about Catherine Florence Wilmot Horne as she would be my Great Aunt.
Mary
Mckjenk@yahoo.com

this is the wrong William and Sarah Davis. this is what the big problem is. there at least 3-5 william davis all born about the same time with at least 2 marrying Sarah's.
My William was born in 1795 owned land in Newport, Dartmouth, and Windsor. He died after 1871 and as far as I can determine it was in 1873.
Sarah was born in 1802 and died in 1852 and is buried in the Old Parish Burying Ground in Windsor across the street from the Maplewood cemetery where a lot of his family is buried. Sarah is also buried in the Old Parish Burying Ground. I have that book with Sarah in it. But William isn't I was told that he is buried there.
that is one reason why I am going to Nova Scotia some time this year.
I do thank you tho. I must tell you that one fellow sent me a William and Sarah's family and inlaws. we have none of those inlaws or some of those children. they have my Mary Ann b 1822 listed as theirs. I have been doing geneology for over 60 yrs and got a lot of information from grandmother and they were her grandparents.
Dot

For years now I have been searching for my gggrandmother, Sarah (NOT Fultz) b 1802 d 1852 Windsor, Hants Co., Nova Scotia. She married my gggrandfather William Davis b 1795 d 1873/4 Windsor, Hants co, Nova Scotia Both are buried in the Old Parish Burying Ground in Windsor, Hants co., NS.
My grandmother told me also years ago, that her grandmother's maiden name was Stewart and that was why her father William Stewart Davis used his middle name Stewart instead of William and that is also in my gggrndfather's will that I have a copy of, but he never put in Sarah's maiden name!!
I have their children's names and also my grandmother, Martha Louise Davis siblings.Martha married Frederick L. Moss that she met at her sister (Redden) home.
I would love to hear from anyone that has a connection to this family of William and Sarah Davis.
I am in hopes that I can get to Nova Scotia this year.

Dorothy Moss Smith rankin@tds.net
