MacCharles/McCharles Family

I am looking for information on John MacCharles and Martha Shaw MacCharles. John was a Mariner or seaman, and died before 1909. Martha was born about 1832 or so and died 23 March 1909. As far as I know they had three children: George (who died young), Margaret Jane (who married 1-Robert Kelley and 2-Samuel King), and Duncan. Their son Duncan married Carrie Miller and had five children: Muriel, William (married Kathleen Morris), Evelyn Gladys (married Clarence Amirault), Milford (married Jane Maud Fletcher), and Delbert (died young).

Martha Shaw MacCharles is supposed to be related to George Bernard Shaw. Any information you can share would be appreciated.

According to the Kings Historical Society Database "Tarr" is interred in the Lakeville Billtown Cemetery Stone #115. From the recorded inscription it looks like one stone with 3 names "Nicholas R. Tarr died 29 Aug 1921, aged 28 years, children, Earle Robert and Blanche E., no dates."
Saunders Lines in Kings Co.

Noticing that there are a number of Saunders queries posted under the Sarah Wheaton thread, it seems that there is enough interest to have a Saunders thread. I am a descendant of Timothy (Jr.) and Martha (Neily) Saunders, and have quite a bit of information on their descendants, as well as those of Timothy's siblings, Judith, who married Moses Banks, Elizabeth, who married Abner Morse, and Hannah, who married John Saunders.

This John was a son of Joseph and Sarah (Hill) Saunders, and so a first cousin of Hannah. This Joseph and the Timothy (Sr.) who married Judith Rowell were brothers, so he was the uncle of the Timothy who married Martha Neily, and I have accumulated quite a bit on his descendants as well.

The parents of Joseph and Timothy (Sr.) were Henry and Mary (Mitchell) Saunders of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and they are the ancestors of most Kings Co. (and NS) Saunders, although a few come from more recent immigrants, or from descendants of Pardon Sanders who changed the spelling of their name.

I was glad to see a number of "new" descendants of these lines on the message board, but, unfortunately, most went to private e-mails before revealing their lines. I hope that any not wanting to keep that in formation secret will post it so that we can learn who more of our relatives are and where they live, what they do, etc. Unfortunately, the Saunders family is so large that few from here use the Saunders Family message board, or the major websites such as 'Saunders of Hertfordshire'. Perhaps this one would work better for us.

I have two Saunders lines, both coming from Timothy and Martha and meeting at my grandmother, Eva Jessie Saunders, who married Reginald E. Neily. One goes Timothy S. - (Rev.) Henry S. - Nathan Randall S. - Adoniram Judson S. - Eva Jessie S. The other is Timothy S. - David S. - Obadiah S. - Isobel "Belle" S. - Eva Jessie S. More details on request.
On a recent trip to Nova Scotia, I did an inventory of headstones in the Morristown cemetery, across from the Baptist church. I have posted the information on Find-a-Grave.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=22...;

Because of file size limitations, my photos had to be compressed. If you would like a non-compressed photo, please contact me. Feel free to copy the photos that I submitted. Please let me know of any errors, some of the stones were hard to read.

I am sure that there are unmarked graves there, this is just a record of the existing headstones.

Thanks
Susan

I found various R.C. Baptismal records for the children of Patrick Savage and Sophia O'Leary:
In "Our Lady of Mount Carmel", Propect, Halifax Co. is one for Cicilia Savage, Bapt. aged 6 months on 21 Oct 1829 (sponsors William and Mary O'Brien)
The rest in the Windsor, Hants Co. R.C. church which has them taking place in Horton, Kings Co:
Thomas Bapt. 15 Jun 1846 aged 12 yrs
Susan Bapt. 15 Jun 1846 aged 10 yrs
James Bapt. 15 Jun 1846 aged 7 yrs
William Bapt. 15 Jun 1846 aged 3 yrs
Lydia Ann Bapt. 15 Jun 1846 aged 2 mos.

Also, a Catherine Savage Bapt. 25 Feb 1850 aged 19 yrs. which I suspect is the same family and likely took place prior to her getting married. There's a later Baptismal record with a Catherine Savage as the mother, but I can't read if the father is Hibbetts, Hibberts, Tibbetts, etc. The child is Joseph son of Thomas and Catherine Bapt. in Mount Uniacke - sponsors are John Savage and Catherine Whalen.

Steve Franey

Maddie, the only connection I can find for Sophia O'Leary and the Eagles surname is that in the 1851 census, Patrick's next door neighbor was James G Eagles. By the time of the next census in 1861, Patrick has passed on and Sophia is listed as Sophia Savage. I was not able to determine whether James G Eagles was also alive in 1861...

The informant for the death record for James Harvey Savage, a son of Patrick and Sophia, is James Harvey's son, Fitch and he lists his grandparents, James Harvey's parents as Patrick Savage and Sophia O'Leary.

In 1871, Sophia Savage is in Harbourville with James H White?? Do you think this could be Sophia's son, James H Savage??

In 1881, at the time of the census, Sophia Savage is enumerated with the family of Ebenezer and Seretha Congdon, in Lakeville... I cannot see any family connection here.

At the time of the 1891 census, Sophia Savage is enumerated with her son's family, James Harvey Savage, living at Canada Creek at the time.

I was looking at the late registration of birth for Alvin 'Fitch' Savage and the supporting documentation was from a family Bible, perhaps that of James Harvey Savage and Mary Jane Orr. That family Bible was in the possession of Armina Savage Corbett, a dau of Fitch's. I can't find a 411 listing for Armina, (aka Mrs Haliburton Corbett), she was last known alive in 1998... mentioned in her brother Charles' obit. Perhaps someone on this board can put you in touch with one of Armina's children to locate the Savage family Bible, which might possibly contain answers to your questions about the ancestry of Patrick and Sophia.

Was Thomas H Savage a child of Sophia and Patrick... The Grafton Methodist Cem monument inscription says he died 29 Sep 1875 in Cornwallis, but I could not find a record of his passing?? His birth falls in between Richard's and Harvey's, 26 Jul 1836. All the best in your research.
Eric Little
Mossleigh, AB

Hi

The date of 13 Nov. 1823 is the marriage date for Ebenezer Benjamin and Elizabeth Pineo. Elizabeth was his second wife. They went on to have five daughters in the Annapolis County area of Nictaux. Ebenezer was first married to a lady with the first name of Latrisia with the short form of Tracy. They had 2 sons and maybe three. Still researching. We are now trying to find out the last name of Latrisia. This information is researched at great cost and documented by a lady by the name of Sandy Loughman and is still on going.

Wendy Benjamin

The names are Ebenezer Benjamin, Latrasia or Tracy Benjamin and also Elizabeth (Pineo) Benjamin. I am taking a guess that they are buried in Kings Co.,but could be wrong.

I'm looking for information my G-g grandfather, Silas / Elias F. McLellan, born somewhere in Nova Scotia, Canada; the names and birth-marriage-death dates of any siblings Silas may have had; his parents names and their birth-marriage-death dates; both were born in Nova Scotia; the names and birth-marriage-death dates of any siblings they may have had; and the same for Silas' grandparents.

In 1822 / 23, Silas was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. The 1861 Census of Canada shows Silas living in Cumberland, Nova Scotia. He married Sarah Bent (b 22 Oct 1824 in Nova Scotia; d 25 Nov 1907, Los Angeles, California, USA), (best guesstimate, between Jan 1852 to Jan 1854) possibly in Amherst, Nova Scotia. They had 4 children, all allegedly born in Amherst, Nova Scotia: Ezra Wiggins McLellan (b 29 Aug 1854; d 28 Apr 1925; m Lizzie Augusta Read, 12 Mar 1879, San Jose, CA, USA); Fred Robert McLellan (b Apr 1856; d. ?, San Bernardino County, CA, USA; married Clara Haskell, 1878, San Jose, CA, USA); Bessie L. McLellan (b 21 Aug 1858; d 9 Apr 1937, Salinas, CA, USA; m Frank Morris, 1891), and Hedley Shafter McLellan (b 2 Jan 1861; d 29 Jan 1929, either in Los Angeles, CA, USA or Ottawa, Canada). Silas may have had a brother named George O. McLellan. Between 1864 and 1867, the entire McLellan family moved from Nova Scotia to San Jose, Santa Clara County, CA, USA.In the 1870 US Fed Census, Silas states both of his parents were born in Nova Scotia.

What little information I have comes primarily from brief notes I found written by my grandmother. Most of that information is confirmed on Ancestry.com. No matter which genealogy website I've gone to to try to learn more, I've thus far been unable to get beyond the information stated above.
I haven't been able to find a marriage record for Patrick Savage and Sophia O'Leary. The info I do have is from family, no sources. I did know that he was born in 1777 and she was born much later. Their first son, Richard Daniel Savage, was born in 1823-24. He later left and ended up in the U.S. Patrick died in abt 1853. I'm trying to get christening records for the children. It's quite possible that she remarried, since she lived into the 1890s.

Hi Eric,
Thank you for all the info. I have to ask, where do you find all of the censuses, etc? I have never been able to find any except the 1851 census. In fact, I have not been able to find much info for my family in NS at all, re marriages, births, etc. although I know I'm probably looking for dates that are too early for records.

Yes, Thomas was one of Patrick and Sophia's sons. They had 7 children and my great great grandfather (I think!) was the eldest. He left NS and somehow ended up in Florida, New Orleans, and Minnesota, where he died.

I really don't know why someone in the family thought Sophia was an Eagles. Might she have married her next door neighbor after her husband died? And maybe he didn't last long? I guess that will remain a mystery.

I'm hoping Armina Savage Corbett's family has info and is willing to share. Thanks for the tip.

Best regards,
Maddie Kathe
Massachusetts

Many of us in Annapolis and Kings county descend from people buried in Greenwood cemetery that was part of the land expropriated when CFB Greenwood was built is 1942. I am part of a group trying to get public access to the family stones. We are planning (with CFBGreenwood) to have a graveside ceremony before the Fall weather gets bad. If anyone is interested in taking part I will get more info to you.
Debbie

Mr&Mrs Joseph Lovitt McKenna's Diamond Anniversary 1903

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lovitt McKenna, of Kingston, NS, celebrated their diamond wedding on June 10th, having been married 60 years before.

Mr. McKenna's grandfather came to this country from Scotland and settled in Yarmouth. His father, William McKenna, was born at Yarmouth in 1787. In 1818 he came to Tremont as one of the pioneer settlers. Here Joseph Lovitt McKenna was born in 1823. Six sons fill responsible positions in this country and the United States. There was one daughter, who is dead.

Though 80 years of age, Mr. and Mrs. McKenna are hale and hearty. Mrs. McKenna was born in Nictaux in 1824, and was a granddaughter of the late Major Nathaniel Parker, a United Empire Loyalist. Mr. McKenna is an honored deacon of the Baptist church.
****************************************************
From: The Yarmouth Light: Year 1903: Issue July 2nd

Ebenezer Benjamin, Elizabeth Pineo, Latrasia (No surname) Benjamin

Hi..

Ebenezer Benjamin B1785 and Elizabeth Pineo were married on
Nov 13, 1823 in Wilmot. This is not the date of her death. They both signed several land transfers until 1851 and lived in the Nictaux/Wilmot area during that time period. Copies of the marriage certificate and land transfers confirm this to be true.

My quest is to find the surname of Ebenezer's first wife, Latrasia (Tracy - nickname)and marriage record/register. Latrasia signed as his wife on an 1811 deed transfer when Ebenezer's original 1810 Antigonish Crown land grant was sold. Her name was signed as both Latrasia & Tracy on the transfer. The original 1810 Crown land grant also included William Duncanson, the husband of Ebenezer's sister, Eleanor. Copies of both the 1810 Crown land grant/map and 1811 land transfer also confirm this information as
being accurate.

Is anyone familiar with the name Latrasia and/or it's country of origin? It is very unusual for that time period. I'm also searching for Ebenezer and Latrasia's marriage certificate/register possibly around 1806-1810..

My family and I would appreciate any "clues" that might help with this search. As mentioned in previous emails,
my information is available to share with others.

Warm Thanks!
Sandy Loughman
