Bonnie, we corresponded a few years ago and I was very grateful for your help then (info in the book about the Disciples of Christ in River John). In answer to your current question: according to the 1860 census of Jackson Township, Guernsey Co., Ohio, we find listed in this order
ROBERT MURRAY 29 Master Carpenter [b.] Nova Scotia
WILLIAM 47 farm laborer Scotland
MARY [McKenzie] 40 Nova Scotia
ANN J. 18 Nova Scotia
JAMES W. 16 farm laborer Nova Scotia
JOHN R. 14 Nova Scotia
THOMAS M. 12 Nova Scotia
ALEXANDER H. 8 Ohio
MARY 5 Ohio
RACHEL 1 Ohio
JAMES MURRAY 85 Master Tailor Scotland
Someone wrote in on this thread, that James's wife was
Isabel Shepherd; not correct, her name was Ann Shepherd.
The Alexander H. above is my husband's ancestor, only he was always known as Henry Alexander. His brother Thomas, above, was killed by Indians while working for a rancher near Medicine Lodge, Kansas in the 1880's. The brother James W. Murray lived in Paola, Kansas and was in the Civil War; he died in Paola at the age of 100 (oldest Mason in Kansas). William the father, was a carpenter in Burlington, Coffey Co., KS in the 1880's, and he and his wife Mary are buried in a little country cemetery near Strawn, KS....we have visited it, and have the dates from the stones. Our family info says they all came from Nova Scotia in 1850 or 1851. They are not anywhere in the 1850 US census, I have spent hours looking. Do you have access to the 1851 census of River John? Hope this helps.
