I'm looking for the family of Charlotte (Lottie) Workman, my grandmother, of Westville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Workman. I believe they married in 1871. There may have been a brother Thomas, as well. And the names Henry and Bud come to mind... but I don't know why. G'ma/Lottie married William Alfred Reid, and had a daughter Emma and a son Allister (my father). I remember visiting the Workman house a few times in the early 1960s, and there was a girl nickmnamed "Cookie" (whose real name, I think, was Margaret or Elizabeth), and in the backyard was a pet turtle with a wire attached to its shell.

I am looking for a connection between my great-great grandmother, Julia Ann Ford Cameron and the other Cameron's (and perhaps Ford's) in the Pictou NS area.

She was born 10-20-1846 in Pictou, married Ralph Carr Small 9-12-1870 in Halifax and died 3-14-1913 in Somerville MA.

According to family papers, her father's name was Alexander Cameron. Her mother's name is debateable, some papers state her mothers name was Nettie Burns, others Amelia Dewall. Perhaps he was married twice. This was supposed to have been a large family, until the household was stricken with tuberculosis. Only three children survived Julia, Grace, and Samuel. ( I have no other information Grace and Samuel)

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Go to Your

The early settlers of Truro: I need help!

I am looking for information about a passenger ship that came up to Nova Scotia during the early years. Specifically I am trying to locate a ancestor of mine who came after the Harris family early settlement.

From the Historical and Genealogical Record of Colchester County there is mention of:

“Dr. John Harris was among the early settlers of Truro, although he did not come until a few years after the Township was granted. He and his family were one of the six families that sailed from Philadelphia in the month of May, 1767, sent by a company to settle in Pictou.”

One of Dr. John Harris daughters (2nd daughter Margaret) married Joseph Notting in 1793. He is the person I am researching for and I cannot seem to find any references about where he came from.

Does anyone on the list have information that could help? I be greatfully in your debt!

Thanks in advance!

William Archibald McLaurin, b. 1872, Nova Scotia, Canada

William emigrated to the US about 1889, settling in Pennsylvania. He married Mary Jane West in Clearfield co., PA in 1893. They resided mainly in Cambria county where William worked as a miner. He died in 1944, Mary the following year. They are both buried in the North Barnesboro Cemetery, Barnesboro, Cambria, PA.

According to his death certificate, his father’s name is Thomas and his mother’s Jeannett McDougal. In the 1881 census for Merrigonish, Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada is found the family of Thomas and “Janet” McLaurin, both born in Nova Scotia and of Scottish ancestry. Their children, all born in Nova Scotia, are:

Elizabeth, age 21
Alexander, age 19
James, age 12
Gordon, age 10
William, age 8
John, age 6

This is a close match, but of course, more proof is needed to determine whether or not this is the family I seek. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Kathy D. Hudson
Kailua, Hawaii

William Hood, miner, Pictou 1838 - 1845?

Where can I locate information about my ggggrandfather, William Hood. He was born 1819, Ayrshire, Scotland, married Ann McGee in 1837 in Scotland, left Scotland the same year and came to Pictou, where my gggrandmother Jane (1838) and her brothers William (1840) and John (1841) were born. William Sr. was from a mining family. Between 1841 and 1848, something happened to William as Ann McGee Hood and her three children left Pictou and went back to Scotland where she married again in 1849. I'm a bit stumped on this and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Catherine married Hugh Chisholm and had several children that I know of. I would like to know who her parents were and when she/they came to Nova Scotia and from where. She and family found in Pictou in 1871 and 1881 census (Hugh dead in 1865).

Also, my great gma, Isabella (Cath's and Hugh's dau) was married in Halifax in 1869 and the minister performing was George Munro Grant, a well known minister and later an educator. Was he related to Catherine Munro's family?

Thanks - also posted on Munro board.

Nick

I'd like to correspond to with anyone searching the Munro family as mentioned below, or the related MacKays and MacLeans. According to the Pioneers and Churches book by Rev. D.K. Donald's son Hector married a Elizabeth Ann MacKay.

Again, I'd love to hear from anyone with a connection.

Thanks,
Andrew Munro Austin

Dr. Jemima and Dr. Mary Mckenzie were sisters. Daughters of Simon and Anne (Murray) Mckenzie of Waterside, Caribou. Both graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in the late 1890's to early 1900's. Both served with "Womens' Union Missionary Society of America" in Cawnpour/now Kanpur, India and then Fatehphur where Jemima was head of a hospital from 1906 to at least 1914. Mary married Rev. A.A. Smith from Pictou County.

Does anyone know how they are connected to father and son Pictou doctors, George McKenzie and John J. McKenzie?

Dr. John J. McKenzie married Charlotte Kayenbergh who was the matron of the Cottage Hospital in Pictou.

From 'Pictou County's History", by James M. Cameron, "became known as the Cottage Hospital, with a VON nurse sent from Montreal in charge, Miss Delaney. She was followed by two more from the same source, the Misses Dunn and Schwartz, until the appointment of a Pictou nurse, Miss Lottie Kayenburg".

Some how Jemima McKenzie and Charlotte Kayenbergh knew each other because among Charlotte's photos was a copy of Jemima' s graduation photo signed.

You can find pictures of Jemima, Mary and Rev. A.A. Smith on this site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nspictou/photo.gal.15.htm
When I found my 2x grt gparents 1869 marriage I discovered the bride Isabella Chisholm's parents were Hugh and Catherine. She was 23, and what is interesting is that two days before, ANOTHER daughter of Hugh & Catherine, Margaret, also 23, married a George Gent. So did my GGGM have a twin sister?

That is not the real question, but I am trying to find out more about the parents, Hugh and Catherine. I believe I have tracked them down to the Little Harbour area of Pictou (near Merigomish, I think) in the 1851 and 1881 censuses. Does anyone have this family from the 1871 census?

The elder Hugh was probably dead (1867?) so it would likely be under Catherine Chisholm (about 62 yo), or their son Hugh, about 33.

Thanks!

Nick

Donald McDonald and Margaret( ?McLean)

My great grandfather, Alexander McDonald married Margaret McTaggart at Strathroy ON in 1873. His birth place is listed as Pictou NS and his parents as Donald and Margaret McDonald. The witnesses were Hector McLean of Watford ON and Ellen McTaggart of Ekfrid ON. The 1871 Ontario census Lambton Co, Brooke Div lists Donald McDonald(63), Margaret(60),Alexander(28),John(26) and Janet(19) all born in NS. I believe this is my ggfather's family( or part of it). Could this be the Donald McDonald of E.Br.East River and Margaret McLean of McLennan's Mtn who were married 11 Nov 1834 by Rev John McRae? Were there other children? Ellen, perhaps? When did they move to Ontario? Who were Donald's and Margaret's parents? When and how did their families arrive in NS? Any information, either confirming or ruling out a connection, welcome. Thanks in advance for any hints on how to find info back past about 1871.

I gather there is an entry for the birth of our HUGH GILLESPIE, born 1870 in PICTOU COUNTY in BOOK 1818, PAGE 150, NUMBER 95. I was wondering if there was anyone who might have access to this book and could please check and see what information this entry contains such as the parents names and exact date of birth so we can confirm this HUGH is part of our family line. From what we can tell the family were in Pictou for a very short period of time before returning to Scotland and that their son HUGH was born there so hoping this is the proof we need.

I have found a record with Margaret arriving in Providence, Rhode Island, with her children James, 6, William, 4, and Moses, 2, on 27 July 1835. She stated they came from Pictou, Nova Scotia. John was not listed as a passenger. I believe they were all born in Ireland, so they didn't stay long in Pictou. Any information or suggestion on how to proceed with my search would be greatly appreciated.

I would love to connect....I have basic info only from articles found in paper, seeking more........

Willing to trade research time in PEI for information should that appeal to another genealogy nut.....

Thanks
sherri

I am searching for descendants of this Donald CAMERON who
have migrated or know of those who migrated to Grenville County or any other place. I am looking for a matching DNA Participant # 29230 to whidh I identify althouhj it is not my direct line. The ancestor to which I identify is Charles , born 1783. There are 9 matching this number first line of gene markers and it should be a good way to
consult and find the parentage of Charles. There was a connection in Glengarry County to this # but I do not know
about Donald.
Some background on Donald is thet he was in the 78th Fraser Highlanders and was in the Sieges opf Louisbourg and Quebec. He got a Grant of land and came from Scotland on the Hector in 1773 listed as son of John of Fassiefern
and destination was East River. He was later drowned there. He had a wife, Mary , sons John and Hugh and daughter, Mary. I do think you for any bit of information.
Delphine Cameron Large

Good Evening,
I am trying to trace my families arrival to Pictou County. My great grandfather (John David Munro) purchased land in Toney Mills from Henry D and Margaret Munro I believe from Brookland. I have not been able to find the connection if any between Henry D and my great grandfather. Interestingly enough though my grandfathers name was Henry K. Munro. If you could shed some light on this for me or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.
Regards,
Lori Munro lmunro@pinelandfarms.org

Gladys Ruth MacNamara Fraser, 88, of New Glasgow

Pictou Advocate, Wednesday, May 12, 1982 - The death occurred on May 9, in Glen Haven Manor, of Gladys Ruth MacNamara Fraser, 88, the widow of Lieutenant Colonel Simon McK. Fraser. Born in Halifax in 1893, Mrs Fraser was the daughter of Robert George and Emily (Noller) MacNamara. Mrs Fraser was descended from French Lutherans who had emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1751 and settled in the Lawrencetown area of Halifax County. A graduate of Halifax County Academy, she studied at the Halifax Conservatory of Music and, before her marriage, she was employed by Samuel Cunard Co. of Halifax. Active in many organizations, Mrs Fraser was a charter member of the Good Hope Chapter of the IODE of Halifax, and at the time of her death was a life member of the Margaret Fraser Chapter IODE of New Glasgow. She long served as a leader in the Girl Guide Movement and was the founding captain of the First Eureka Girl Guide Company. She later served as Girl Guide Commissioner for Pictou County. Active in musical circles, she participated in amateur light opera in Halifax, and for many years was a member of the choir of Westminster Church, New Glasgow, where she also played an active role in the Women's Missionary Society. She was a member of the Arts and Letters Club and the local Council of Women of New Glasgow. During the First World War and the Second World War, she was active in voluntary organizations in support of the war efforts. Very fond of children, Mrs Fraser was active in the mission band of Westminster Church, and for many years Mrs Fraser conducted a private kindergarten in her home. She is survived by two sons, Prof. D.G.L. Fraser, Grand Pre; Col. I.S.F. Fraser, Halifax; four granddaughters; a sister, Miss Ethel MacNamara, Ottawa, and W.L. MacNamara, Fredericton. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by an infant daughter, two brothers and a sister. Funeral service was held Tuesday in Westminster Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, at 2 p.m. The service was conducted by Rev. Mr. J. Donald MacKay. Burial was in the MacLean Cemetery, Hopewell, N.S.

Note: The Advocate used McNamera, MacNamera, and MacNamara spellings in the obituary.

Posted for info only - I am not researching this family.

COUSINS ELIZABETH CHRISTINA HINGLEY & SARAH E. TURNBULL

I have been trying to research family members who ended up in Alpena, Michigan, USA. In the 1870 Wisconsin census, Libby (Elizabeth Christina) Hingley and Sarah E. Turnbull were both living near each other, in Wood county. Libby married David W. Spaulding, who was there with his son, David Dunn Spaulding. They had 2 children, and then, with Sarah along, moved to Alpena, Michigan. Sarah eventually married William W. Menary, and they had one son, Andrew.

In the 1870 census, Sarah said she was born on Prince Edward Island, and Libby said she was born in Nova Scotia. By 1880, Sarah said she was born in Nova Scotia, as did Libby. Sarah died in 1888, and Libby died in 1883. I'm descended from Libby, whose daughter was my grandmother for whom I'm named.

The approximate birth years were about 1841 for Libby and about 1853 for Sarah. Does anyone have any idea of who their parents might have been, or their families? Libby's death certificate gave John and Jane Hingley as her parents, but I don't have any marriage or death information for Sarah yet. John and Jane Hingley were also on the marriage information for Libby. I could not find a John and Jane Hingley that had a daughter named Elizabeth Christina that was born about 1841, who was no longer in Canada by 1870.

AGNES BROWN STEWART born abt1850 Merigomish, Pictou, Nova Scotia

Hi there
I am searching for any information anyone might have about Agnes Brown Stewart and her family. I know she was born abt 1850 in Pictou, Nova Scotia. father William Brown Stewart was born in Scotland England 1824 and wife Janet Simpson of unknown origin. I have no idea why the family moved to Pictou from Scotland originally but would love to find out more abt this family. Agnes was in Philadelphia USA in 1873 and married my GG Grand father Frederick James SHARPE although he was also known as James Frederick SHARPE on the 5 August 1873, their first son William SHARPE was born in Philadelphia in 1875 so they must have spent a few years there. They then came to England, Leicester where Frederick also abt 1850 was born, they then went on to have several other children all born in Leicester. I believe they spent their last years there but as yet have no comfirmation of that. I would love to find any other connections in Pictou there must still be family there somewhere. Would love to here from anyone who knows anything.
I put up a digital copy online of a 1939 home movie taken in Pictou. The film is not very long, but it has very nice footage of a farmer plowing his field with a horse. Because of the location this was filmed I believe it is possible for the man to be identified because the field is by a river leading into the ocean. It's a long shot but someone could possibly identify the property and the farmer. Watch the film it is well worth the time.
Here is the link:
http://one.revver.com/watch/453541/glimpses-of-pictou-annapo...

We are looking for information about my father's family. He was Ronald McKay, dob 9/3/19 in Stellarton. His sisters and brothers were Anna, Alan (Bernard) and Daniel born in Canada plus June, Marie, Dorothea, Charles and Richard born in the US. His parents were Allen J. (dob 1886) and Margaret J. Young McKay (dob 1892). Allen J. McKay had two sisters, Kattie and Sophia M. McKay. Allen J. McKay's parents (who would be my great-grandparents) were Ranald (or Ronald) born in 1854 (?) in Nova Scotia and Chistena (or Christina) born in 1857(?) in Nova Scotia. We think Ranald's mother was Sophia.

If anyone has any information about these folks or if you have any hints, please contact me at rcmckay@landolakes.com.
I'm working on my boyfriend's family tree and have run into a stumbling block with the Jollymores. Although there seems to be quite a bit of info on them, I can't find the right people.

I'm actually looking for 2 lines. My starting point is with Frank James Murray, whose mother was Mabel Jollymore, father-George Jollymore, mother Nellie Matilda Emberly Cooke (of NFLD).

The second is his wife, Audry Harriet Worthylake, father Logan Corbett Worthylake, buried at St. Bee's Cem., son of Fletcher Joseph Worthylake and Iona Lillian O'Leary (or Leary), and Logan's wife, Pearl Jollymore, died in Aberdeen Hospital, daughter of Harry Jollymore of Pictou.

Frank and Audrey both died and are buried in Windsor, ON. Their children were all born here, and so they do not know much about any of these people. I have a few news clippings, and that's about it. (These are my boyfriend's grandparent)

If anyone can help me in any way, it would be much appreciated.

Hi everyone. I'm looking for any genealogical information I can find on one John Beaton, who was born in Cape Breton about 1843, give or take a year. His father was Jonathan Beaton (John Beaton). Don't know who his mother was, and that's what I need. John Beaton b. 1843 married Catherine B. Davidson April 10, 1865, in West River, NS. Catherine Davidson was born in West River, NS, and was the daughter of Kenneth Davidson and Isabel Fraser. If anyone has any information on these people, please contact me directly at keygroup@home.com. Thanks a million. Darlene

tracing William Morrill's mother and father

I do know that William Morrill emigrated as a young man with his parents from West Bromich, Staffordshire, England circa 1826-1832 My grandmother, Anne Morrill[Hingley] Scott said the family came on the Hope. [brig: Hopewell, 1832?]
In 1838, Feb 10, he married Ann Priest who also emigrated with her parents from Staffordshire. It appears the families knew each other, or came over on the same ship.
I know that William Morrill is buried with his wife, AnnPriest in River John in the Anglican cemetary.
Any help with tracing the origins of the family in more detail would be very appreciated.

MRS. HARRY CRAWFORD d. OCT, 18, 1938.

WESTVILLE, Oct 18. - The many friends of Mrs. Harry Crawford, a well-known young Westville woman, were shocked to hear of her sudden death which occurred at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, where she has been a patient for a few days. The late Mrs. Crawford, who was 18, was the former Irene Fleet, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mather Fleet, Blandford, Lunenburg County, and prior to her marriage spent a few years in Westville, where she made many friends. Besides her husband she is survived by three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Ambrose Cleveland, Halifax; Miss Fleet, and Miss Marguerite Fleet, while George and Oliver Fleet are the surviving brothers: The late Mrs. Crawford was a member of the St. Bee's Anglican Church. Her funeral service was held from the home of her husband's parents, Foxbrook Road, with interment taking place at the Auburn Cemetery.
Does anyone know anything about this particular grant to William and John ROBERTSON, members of the Duke of Hamilton's 82nd Regiment (no rank listed)? William was granted 200 acres on the E. River, Pictou and I am curious to know if he settled there, or if he sold his grant and returned to Scotland? How would I find out?
