Ok thanks Kevin, I'll check that out. Another thing that I was wondering if you may have an answer to is about the spouse of Alexander Clattenburg who was the son of John Conrad Clattenburg and Lydia (MacCauly)Clattenburg. According to the marriage register he married Lydia Whynot in Liverpool on September 3, 1872. It says that her parents were Daniel and Catherine but I could never find any proof of their existence in the census records. Are the names of her parents entered as an error and do you know what the names of her parents were?

Blair

I have a copy of a document in the research records of a Great Aunt. It has the Public Archives of Nova Scotia Halifax seal on it. It is a typewritten paragraph that starts with: Long, Page 165: There were two or three distinct Mitchell families represented in Liverpool; ..... and goes on to discuss the first Mitchells in Mass and marriage of William to Hannah Mayo and Priscilla Mayo marriage to Eleazer Simmons and ends with a note that William Mitchell married Salome Nickerson and names their children.
I would like to have a better source reference for the document so I can use it for a Mayflower application and need to know if Long page 165 is referring to a book or other record source. All help very much appreciated.

Ida's husband, Mack Brown's line goes back to the Pilgrims. How are you related to them. I will send more information later.

Betty

Robert Douglas is the twin of Barbara: both were christened on Mar. 3 1799 in Scotland. Both are the brother of John Douglas (born Jan. 12, 1794. John was a pioneer settler of Caledonia and married to Abigail P. Foster of Port Medway near Liverpool, Nova Scotia. I am a 3rd great grandson of John and Abigail Douglas. The mother of Robert Douglas is Jane Mill not Ainsley. Jane Mill was married to James Douglas.

Hello all,

Maybe someone would be so kind as to clear up some issues I keep running into...
I keep seeing this information regarding my 5th great grandparents (William Murray & Joanna Tupper), listing Williams parents as John Murray & Anne Bennett. This would have made him a younger brother to James Murray 'Loyalist', John Murray, MD (Doctor of Norwich), and older brother to Elizabeth Murray-Campbell-Smith-Innman.

But in reading through all the correspondence of these individuals (and there seems to be no shortage of it), I have found the following discrepancies...

1. This William Murray was born in Unthank, Scotland on Wednesday April 10, 1724. (sources below).
2. He sold out of the British army in 1771 in Ireland.
3. In no correspondence do I find any mention of William having been married at all.

I am hopeful that someone can shed some light on this for me. Thank you.

Fred Murray

http://archive.org/details/lettersofjamesm00murr
http://www.csulb.edu/projects/elizabethmurray/EM/collection....
Thank you all for the replies. Hello Dave, I remember we had some correspondence about two years ago. I hope you and yours are doing well. I am a decedent of William Murray, Jr. (Mary’s older brother).

There are still some inconsistencies I have not been able to reconcile however…

First, according to Dale H. Cook, (Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants;
Plymouth Co. MA Coordinator for the USGenWeb Project & Administrator of http://plymouthcolony.net), who was kind enough to do some research for me…
“He could not have been born in North Bridgewater in 1722 or 1723 because that town did not exist until 1823. See: Robert T. Swan and Henry Ernest Woods, Editors, "Historical Data Relating to Counties, Cities and Towns in Massachusetts," First Edition (Boston: Wright & Potter, 1920) or any of the four subsequent editions.
No record of his birth is found in the published vital records of Milton or Sandwich. No record of his birth is found in the published vital records of Bridgewater, and no record of his baptism is found in the published vital records of any of the four Bridgewater’s.”

So William’s birthplace is still a mystery to me…

Second, I have seen it said that he is the son of John & Ann (Bennett) Murray, who did indeed have a son named William who was in the army. But in reading the “Letters of James Murray the Loyalist”, who would have been his older brother, William was born on Wednesday, Apr. 10th 1724 in Unthank, Ewes, Dumfries, Scotland and was in Ireland in 1771 where he sold out of the army.
And the Elizabeth Murray Project (http://www.csulb.edu/projects/elizabethmurray/EM/archive.htm...)
Family letters indicate that he remained in London for some time after this. Nothing in all of this family’s correspondence (that I have been able to find) indicate any mention of him ever being in Nova Scotia or marrying at all.

So I fear William’s parents will remain a mystery to me as well…

I would be pleased to hear from any other relations as well.
Again, thank you all…

Fred Murray
mabaas2010@gmail.com
I totally agree. But if you look at the land grants these soldiers were give,n they were in the 1759 1760 period, surely they wouldn't wait 14 years to give them?

My own relative was born in 1739 so he would have been too young for 1745. He was granted land in Liverpool Township.

I was thinking more about William Murray's age. In 1745, he would have been 22 and attacking Louisbourg would have been an adventure and he would be paid as well.
In 1758, he would have been 35 and given some other details, possibly a married man with children. Completely different circumstances.

Somewhere at that time I came up with William's parents being John Murray and Ann Bennett. I will try and find my source data on that. The new Family Search has me pretty frustrated I like the old version much better.

I am like you, a descendant of William Murray and Joanna Tupper, and like you I have been able to find very little about William Murray. My descent is through Mary Murray who married James McLeod. Joanna Tupper however, is another story. She was the daughter of Nathan Tupper and Experience Gibbs and their ancestry is readily available. Nathan Tupper was also a grantee in Liverpool Township. If you can prove it, you are a Mayflower descendent as Experience Gibbs appears to be descended from Richard Warren. Nathan Tupper is descended from Thomas Tupper who emigrated from England in the 17th century. The Tuppers and the Gibbs settled In Sandwich, MA.

There is quite a write up on the Murrays in The History of Liverpool Township by Francis Tupper, copy of same is avilable at Queens Museum.

Pg 82 William was a 1764 grantee of the Liverpool Township and was said to be part of the 1758 seige of Louisbourg. He was a widower with two daughters. Daughters stayed in Halifax. Lived in Liverpool and then settled in Lot 4 in Block C in The Falls. aka Wiliam Moray.

Pg 87 married Joanna Tupper in 1761

Extensive decendant list Pg 87-88

The NS Freeman History it does not indicated where he is from, likely New England. Joanna is fr Sandwich, MA.

He doesn't name families, but you will find the above info. at the page below of Col.
