Trouble locating Canadian info - I cannot find anything

Hi Everyone,

I posted this message into the Sherbrooke forum, but wondered if anyone is able to help with general pointers as I am stuck in my search for my Great Uncle Edwin Waldron. He was born in Swindon, England, on 9th June 1911 and was looked after by the Waifs & Strays Society and I have details of his life in England prior to emigrating to Canada on 14th April 1927.

I have managed to find a grave for him at St John Cemetery, Richmond County showing that he died in 1997 and was buried with his wife Alice Y. Pocklington (possibly first name Marice b.1917? d. 1989) and their infant son Freddie (only date is 17th April 1941).

I cannot find any other records for marriage, death or any other children they may have had (I cannot even find a record for Freddie).

I am having real trouble searching for records in Canada and am coming up with nothing. I have only just found out that he existed as my Great Gran never spoke of him or his older sister Elizabeth Large (also given up for adoption, moved to Canada, but returned to England so I have found lots of records for her).

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to try to make contact with any living family if there are any.

Many thanks

Zoe

I have almost all of the descendants into the 20th century of this couple. I have all of the Beranger ancestors back into France. Unfortunately, I don't have any ancestors of Remi LeBlanc.

I know of no connection between Mary Elena Beranger with the Micmacs. I don't know about Remi. If there is a connection, it would likely be through Marie Therese, who married to a Claude Petitpas about 1686.

My wife is a first cousin, twice removed, to Mary Elens Beranger. She is also a GGGGGGGgranddaughter of Marie Therese, but through a different line.

If you sign into familysearch.org and search for Josephine Wright born in Nova Scotia Canada you will be able to view the record of the baptism of Josehhine Wright , age 15, born of the marriage of Edwin Wright and Mary Forbrigger of Sunnyside.
Since Josephine was the eldest child of Edwin and Mary Wright it would support your conclusion that Mary Jane Langley and Mary Jane Forbrigger are one person.

Here is some information that may help you:

Here is Cassie & children in the 1901 Census. She is widowed. http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=25859&h...
If you click the "link" at the end of the line of each person, it will take you to them in the 1911 Census.

I found a marriage record for John Samuel Grant to Annie May Burgoyne in 1922 https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ItemView.aspx?ImageFile=.... Also, John's birth record: https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ItemView.aspx?ImageFile=....

Hope this helps

Hi, folks.
My name's Presley Ferguson, and I'm looking to further my research into my direct paternal Ferguson ancestry, and possibly find collaborators.

As of late, I've mainly been using novascotiagenealogy.com to search old birth records, death records and marriage records, as well as using automatedgenealogy to search census records.

I'll share what I know thus far, and if you feel you can contribute or collaborate, please let me know.

I'll start with my Great-Grandfather, Ronald Neil Ferguson.

Ronald Neil Ferguson (b. Dec 9, 1898, Cleveland, Richmond County, Nova Scotia, Canada) was the son of Neil Ferguson (b. Aug 15, 1840 - d. abt 1917) and Catherine S. MacDonald. On Dec 20, 1933, Orangedale, Inverness Country, Nova Scotia, Canada, Ronald married Annie Lillian MacDonald (b. Dec 16, 1909, Grande Anse, Richmond County, Nova Scotia, Canada), the daughter of Murdock (Murdoch?) MacDonald and Margaret MacKenzie.

According to a testament from a sister written as "Hughene Urquhart" on the Affidavit of Ronald's Delayed Registration of Birth form, he was born whes Hughene was 7-years-old, and was from a "family of 14 children". Although, this conflicts with the census records I've read, which show only 12 children (Ronald N., Cintre A., Catherine M., Norman A., Marion R., Danial H., Ella, Hughene, George E., William E., and Alexander J.). The census records I've seen also show identical birthdates for Norman A. and Marion R. (Jul 24, 1881), as well as for George E. and William E. (Jul 27, 1893), suggesting the possibility of two sets of twins.

Neil - Ronald's father, and my 2nd Great-Grandfather - was the son of Norman Ferguson (b. abt 1786, Scotland) and Christie (maiden name unknown). Norman was a sailor from Scotland, and was the first patriarch of my paternal line to arrive in Nova Scotia. Some of the census records list his family as having lived in Inhabitants River, Richmond County, Nova Scotia.

I could not get much information on Neil's father, Hugh (my 4th Great-Grandfather) except for his name, and his spouse's name, Sarah (maiden name unknown). I am assuming he may have stayed in Scotland. Using my own estimation, I can make a guess at his birth being around the 1730's, or "roughly in the early 18th century".

That's about all I can give you. If you can help, please let me know. My e-mail address is jrmacadie.ns83@gmail.com . Please don't hesitate to drop me a line. Thanks. :)

Thanks for the info. I got Katie's last name (MacDonald) from Duncan's death certificate, which I have a copy of. His father's name was spelled Laughlin on that document, and Lauchlin on his marriage record. The 2nd marriage was new information. I need to look at more census records again.

Hi, took a quick look and yes, Duncan MacIntyre's parents were Lauchlin and Katie MacIntyre. I was not able to verify that Katie's last name was MacDonald. The 1971 census shows Lauchlin as being widowed with the following children: Annie, Catherine, Isabella, Flora, Catherine Mary and Duncan A. It looks like he may have remarried in 1871 to a Mary MacColl -- parents listed as Duncan and Ann MacIntyre. You can explore this info further at www.novascotiagenealogy.com.

Hope this helps a bit!!

I am researching my grandmothers family - the MacDonald's from St. Peters and would appreciate any help. Her father was James Alexander MacDonald born November 7, 1878. He came to America in 1898. I know he had a sister listed as Anna J. MacDonald on a 1920 US Census. I believe his father was John MacDonald, mother Catherine. I am not 100% of this. I would love help finding birth records, etc. Thank you so much!

I looked under C before and only found James' marriage specifically for family of "John and Catherine".

Also the baptisms of 2 of James and Sarah's children.

I use the NS Genealogy site all the time but only looked specifially for the deaths of either John or Catherine as well as James or Sarah ... I'll check again!
I received the info on Snell from Raymond Landry in L'Ardoise who passed away two years ago. There is additional info on this Carter family at the website below. Not to confuse matters but I have a Philip Carter of County Londonderry, Irelan who married Frances McGrath in Halifax, 1830 and lived in Liverpool, NS

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pclandry/L...

I am researching Florence Marion GRANT who married my great-uncle Frederick Howard JONES ( a British Home Child from the Middlemore Home in B'ham England) in Grantville, NS. I believe that her mother was a LeLaucheur, but I'd have to go back to my notes to make sure. He was "adopted" by John and Sarah MacDonald, and lived in Cape Breton, NS in 1911.

They were married in 1923, and were still living in Grantville in 1933 when Frederick was a witness on Florence's sister's (Laura) death certificate.

I've accounted for all of my grandfather's siblings, but the last I can find of Frederick was this 1933 document.

I would love to find his date of death (and Florence's) and place of burial. I am not aware of any children born to them, but would appreciate any information that anyone could provide.

Cheryl

Dennis, thanks for your help with this Query. I'm certain Adele is not Olivia but very well could be her sister. I see an Adelaide DeRoche age 24 residing with another family in the 1871 Census, Arichat. I cannot a George and Olive DeRoch in the 1871 Census, but do know he existed as he is listed in the 1870 "List of Occupations" Arichat.
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=279787
In the little window saying Queens Co., select Richmond and it will give a brief history of Richmond and what is taking place there in 1870. Arichat was a busy shipping port. George shows with the other DeRoches listed in Arichat.
George DeRoche also reported the birth of Elizabeth Mann in 1868, two lines from the birth record of George Walsh. That Elizabeth is the girl residing with John Walsh in the 1881 Census with her mother Harriet.
I see a George De Roch born 1844 in Cape Breton, in the 1881 Census, in Montreal. He could be a son of George De Roch, Arichat.
For your info, Skydot, there are 45 DeRoche and DeRoch in the 1901 Census in Richmond Co. Surely you will have contact with some of them. Best of luck in your search.

Using the age in the 1871 census, your Olive is probably the following person born and baptized at Arichat, NS as "Adele" in 1844

Desroches, Adèle
baptism date: 1844-09-18 birth date: 1844-09-17
father: Georges Desroches
mother: Olive Forêt
godfather: Edmond Terrio
godmother: Angélique Forêt

Since I have not seen the exact register entry, I cannot say for sure if Adele is a correct transcription of the name, but your "Olive" would definitely be a member of the family of George Desroches and Olive Forest, who married at Arichat, NS. Unfortunately, since the earliest records were burned in November 1838 (rectory fire), their marriage is not available. Perhaps you can find out connecting info at the various Desroches and Forest family message boards or websites. Both names are Acadian.

Dennis

1871 Census Arichat NS.
John Walsh age 34, born NS, Irish.
Olivia Walsh age 28, born NS, French
Mary age 9, Elizabeth age 8, George age 2, Charles 1 month.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Birth of three of their children are recorded in NS Vital Stats ( on line). https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/
George Walsh born 12 of Oct 1868.
John Charles Walsh born March 7, 1871.
Bridget Ann Walsh born Feb 24, 1875.
In the record of birth for John Charles, it says his father John is a Mariner and other records of birth that year show many men as Mariners in Arichat.
I will put the family below shown in the 1881 Census, Arichat NS. You will see that John is listed as a Widower, so Olivia died between 1875 and the Spring of 1881.
I could find no other trace of the entire family after this Census, no marriage records of any of the children, etc. It appears the whole family moved. They are not in the 1891 Census either, that I could find. You will notice a Harriet Mahan and daughter residing with them in the 1881 Census. I believe they were family friends who stayed with them while John was out to sea. I've traced Harriet along and her last name was Mann in the 1901 Census.
Hope this info will assist you.
--------------------------------------------------------
1881 Census Arichat NS.
John WALCH W Male Irish 49 Nova Scotia Labourer Catholic
Mary WALCH Female Irish 22 Nova Scotia Servant Catholic
Eliza WALCH Female Irish 19 Nova Scotia Catholic
George WALCH Male Irish 13 Nova Scotia Catholic
Charles WALCH Male Irish 10 Nova Scotia Catholic
Briget WALCH Female Irish 6 Nova Scotia Catholic
Harriet MAHAN M Female English 36 Nova Scotia Catholic
Elizabeth MAHAN Female English 13 Nova Scotia Catholic
