I'm looking for information on these brothers and sisters- John J., Mary and Sam J Murphy. They were born in Victoria Co., Cape Breton, children of John Murphy and Annie (Mary?) McNeil. (The senior John would have been born in Newfoundland, son of Thomas Murphy and Bridget Kanary.) Their parents died very young. John died in 1864, his wife died previous to him. The children would have been very young at the time and I think they may have been brought up by another family member and eventually went to the U.S. There is a John Murphy in Beverly, MA in 1900 and this could be one of the children.

Ross in Cape Breton

Hi folks!

I had originally posted the information below last October. Since then, thanks to Bill Lawson and others on this site, I've been able to find some info that suggests that Alexander Ross lived (at least a little while) in Uig Parish, Lewis, in Scotland. And he, his wife Mary MacKay (or McKay) and his family may have come to Cape Breton around 1827.

Because he settled in the St. Ann's area, I'm trying to determine what, if any, relation he had to the other Ross settlers in and around Munro's Point in the North Gut of St. Ann's. Also, the Ross pioneers in the adjacent settlements of North River, Englishtown, Big Harbour, Plaster, and even Boularderie. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information about their pioneer Ross families in these areas. I'd be happy to share what I have with them. I'm hoping this would help me to identify the siblings, and ancestors, of Alexander Ross.

Original posting below:
My gg grandfather was Alexander Ross, born about 1788/89, who married in Stornoway a Mary MacKay.They emigrated to Canada about 1820 and landed in the St. Ann's area of Cape Breton, N.S. later settling in Little Narrows. They had a large family of 8 or 9 children, two of whom were my g grandfather John, born 1827 (or 1832) in St. Ann's, Cape Breton and died 1895 in Little Narrows, and his older brother Donald, born 1813, who lived in nearby Jubilee. I am trying to find out more information about both Alexander Ross and Mary (MacKay) Ross. I know little about where they came from (i.e. were they both from Stornoway?), and how they got to St. Ann's (i.e. what ships, routes, etc.) . . . .

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Donald.

According to family lore my GGGgrandfather James A Wilkie was shipwrecked at Black Brook near Ingonish about 1815. The date may be a bit off. The ship may have been called the Murcury. The crew came ashore and all but one survived and were taken by boat my a local man to Sydney. The ship was running between Cardiff and Montreal. I would like to confirm that the shipwreck took place and any other information that may be available.

Trying to find out information on John Alexander Campbell, married to Melinda May Roberts of Ingonish, Victoria County. He apparently was raised by Campbells, and took on their name. He was born in about 1876, married in 1899 and had a heart attack and died at the plaster mines in Ingonish about 1928, 1929, but have been unable to confirm. I would appreciate ANY information that can be passed on.

Looking for additional information on Malcolm MACASKILL of Skye, who settled in Cape North, Victoria County circa 1830. Malcolm's family included sons Neil (b. 1830) and Norman and daughter Christie (b. circa 1814). Malcolm is listed in the 1838 census for Cape North but I have no further information about him. Neil married Flora MATHESON and raised a large family in Cape North, which is well documented. Norman left Cape Breton circa 1835 and no more is known of him. Christie married Alexander CHISHOLM and moved to Whycocomagh after 1838.

I'm looking for any vitals on Catherine Martin and her husband Kenneth Morrison. Their daughter Christina married Kenneth MacDonald, son of Neil and Jessie, of Tarbot. They were living during the 1881-1901 censuses. Other children were Margaret, Donald and Isabella. Isabella married Kenneth's brother Johnny Ban Mcdonald also of Tarbot. I know there is some research going on with this family. The MacDonald side I'm okay with, it's the Morrison/Martins that are problematic.

Any information on this wing of the Morrison family or the Martin family of North River would bring down a huge roadblock.

Any help would be great....

I'm searching for a lead to the ancestry of my ggg-grandparents Colin Mcleod, born about 1806 and Mary McAskill, born about 1812, d/o Donald McAskill and McSween and cousin to giant Angus McAskill. Colin McLeod's father's name was most likely John McLeod. His first son is named John McLeod born about 1829, married to Johanna MacAulay. Colin McLeod does not show up in the 1871 census but his wife Mary McAskill does, shown as a widow living with her son and my gg grandfather Roderick "Rory" McLeod. Roderick married a Sarah Campbell and were from Englishtown in 1871.

Descendants of Duncan Mackenzie m. Isabella Beaton

Mackenzie/Mckenzie

I know for sure that the last two generations of this family are spelled MAC, but there have always been rumors that the old family spelling is Mc.

John Francis Mackenzie (born-09/22/1915) born in Dominion(?).

Father, Duncan Mackenzie, was born in Cape Breton
Mother, Maude Mackenzie

This family moved back near his family and lived in the Dominion area of Cape Breton from approximately 1912 until 12-06-1917 when they moved back to Central Maine.

There are family notes that Duncan worked in local mines for a short time, (Florence #3) was mentioned. Around 1915 until 1919 Duncan served in the Canadian Army and was shipped overseas.

I found an Attestation Form from the Canadian Over-Seas Exped. Forces for a Duncan John Mackenzie with a date of birth of June 12, 1889, born in Boularderie on Cape Breton. It lists his wife as Maude E. Mckenzie. This material happened to me by chance but matches the family information I have so I assume that this is the correct family line. At the time this form was written, which was July 13, 1916, it shows that his wife was living on Delams(?) lake, Cape Breton. I cannot find a reference to this lake anywhere.

Grandfather, John Mackenzie
Grandmother, Elizabeth Mackenzie (MacDonald)

They were married in 1888 and lived in Cape Breton.

Elizabeth died 11/11/1906 in Cape Breton, I assume in Dominion.

Great grandfather, Duncan Mackenzie
Great grandmother, Isabella Mackenzie (Beaton)

There was also a few notes that mentioned a Hector Mackenzie that had family land near Dalem's lake, Island of Boulardarie. It also mentioned a kings grant.

Oral history in my family places Mary J. Morison on Cape Breton Island so this *could* be her family. Any additional information about her or her family would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Lynn Cohen (great-granddaughter of Mary J.Morison)

Russell, thank you so much for your information. I do have those results from the census'and have also found Catherine and Archie Jr. in the 1901 Cencus living in Baddeck.and this makes sense as by then Donald had been killed in a woods accident and Racheal and Isobella were married. What I am having trouble understanding is why Isobella doesn't show up on any of these records and the year of her birth was the same as Donald's unless they were twins. I can add to you information though. Rachael and Capt. Dan's daughter married as you said Murdock MacDermid. They had three children, Florence who married Dr. Muir Lang, Marjorie who married Ken MacKenzie and Nancy who married a Lanlgey. All three are still living in Cape Breton .

John Alexander Campbell m. Melinda May Roberts

Thanks in advance.
