Daniel Roberts 1796-1874, son of Daniel Roberts and Anne Goodwin married Deborah Travis 1797, daughter of Nathaniel Travis and Rose Crowell. They likely lived somewhere in the Argyle area. The three children I have for them are Elizabeth 1830, Rebecca 1835 and Daniel 1840. Does anyone have anymore information on them? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Linda

Hello
My grandfather leopold Adolphus Wareham b May 25 1881 in kingston jamiaca not sure how he got to San Juan Puerto Rico there has to be some record.. I have a passager record with him coming from san Juan, Puerto Rico to New york on the ship Brazos in Oct 2 1918 age 38 He worked as a waiter on board. I know he went to Nova Scotia or New Brunswick and he married my grandmother Mary Hilda Jones on July 1 1926 in Nova Scotia. It also said on his marriage paper that he worked on the SS Prince George as a Porter.. and it has him living on a different ship SS it looks like Lites.. I know he ended back in New york for his WW2 Registration Draft card in April 27 1942 on the card it has him working at Commodore Hotel and was living in New york age 60.. So there has to be something about him cross the boarder again. I also got his Petitions for Naturalization and he is 67 dated November 1948.. As you can see he jumps around alot.. If anyone can help me get more ship records.

If anyone can help me I would be so grateful it has taken so long just to get what we have..
Oh ya it as his parent as Jacob Del Monte Wareham Kingston Jamaica wife Martha Bravas..

Thanks again for any help

Hello;

I am attempting to find an obituary for a Elizabeth Robicheau nee. Frotten, she died in Yarmouth in Oct 1956. Now I know based on a family member that they once saw an obituary for her in an old newspaper published 24 Oct 1956.

I checked the Halifax Hearld and could not find anything. Does anyone make frequent trips to the Yarmouth County Museum to check and see if its maybe in the Yarmouth Light? or one of the older Yarmouth newspapers? It's going to be 6 months or more before I make another trip to Yarmouth, so here is hoping that someone is able to help.

Elizabeth Frotten
married
Ferdinand Leander Robicheau

Leander died 21 Feb 1933 in Yarmouth.

If anyone can assist please contact me at chris AT chrishynes.com

Thanks,

Chris

Robert Crawford and Sarah Kirkpatrick were married in St.John New Brunswick in 1873 but settled in Yarmouth shortly after. They had at least 4 children, Robert, Sadie, George and Frederick. Frederick died young in Yarmouth, Robert Jr. married in Truro in 1902, Sadie never married (I don't think she did) but I don't know what ever happened to George or if Robert and Sadie had any other children. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone has access to the 1891 census for Yarmouth they could look up this family for me and/or if anyone knows of this family they could get in touch with me. Thank you Dawn

Epson and David Travis drown 1890

Kemptville

The drowning accident by which the two sons of Mr. E. Travis, Epson and David, aged 13 and 17, lost their lives is the saddest known in the history of Kemptville. The sadness is increased when it is remembered that Mr. Travis has within a year lost his eldest daughter by fever.

Supposition leads to the following conclusion in the case of the drowning accident: the young men engaged in the field only a few hundred feet from where they were drowned, which spot was exposed to view from the east and west roads, the mill, church and their own home. It was about eleven o'clock when they were noticed to descend towards the river by Mr. Hayes, who supposed they had decided to drive some cattle from off the intervale on the opposite side of the river, and in attempting to cross on a medium sized log, lost control of it and were precipitated into the water. David was noted as a good swimmer and his drowning is unaccounted for, as he could have easily swam to the shore. But discretion is sometimes lost in the moment of excitement, and he being unwilling to leave his smaller brother struggling in the water alone, probably attempted to catch the log, which would naturally roll unless taken hold of by the end, and as a consequence both were drowned.

Just as the men were leaving the steam mill, the word came to them that a hat had been found on the beach and all gathered in that vicinity. Punts, rafts and boats were employed, and grappling irons of every description, but not until darkness and pouring rain came on, was the first body found; the other was recovered at nine o'clock.

It is seldom the lot of any community to witness so sad a spectacle as was presented by the removal of the bodies from the river to the house. The circumstances of the case, coupled with the darkness of the night, the drizzling rain and flickering of about twenty lanterns, tended to inspire a feeling of awe. The grief of the poor mother and other members of the household was heart-rending.

The funeral took place on Friday, and was largely attended. The procession was headed by the A.C.T. Society. The service was conducted by Rev. E. Parker, and the two bodies were buried in one grave.

"Childrens' day" has been postponed until July 20th, on account of the late drowning accident.
*************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1890: June 17th issue

The funeral will be held this afternoon.

From a Danvers paper..... Deceased was the third son of Mr. David Hurlbert of this place.
TUSKET HILL MAN DEAD

Quarantine Station
Halifax, Sept.23rd, 1901

Editor Yarmouth Light:
Dear Sir,

We arrived here Friday afternoon, 2:30 o'clock, in schr. Ella M. Goodwin, Capt. James D. Goodwin, with two sick men--- Monde White, Abram's River, and Edward Harding, Newfoundland.

At 6 o'clock, the doctors' boat came along side and on seeing the men pronounced the disease smallpox. So at 8 o'clock a towboat took a line from us and towed us up to the wharf of this little island. The next day we got a team and drove the two sick men to the hospital, and the rest of us had to leave the vessel and take another building. We are 20 of a crew; there being 18 of us in this house. Any who are taken sick have to go to the hospital.

There are seven of Schr. Thalia's crew in the hospital now, and one dead. His name is William Muise from Tusket Hill.

Arthur Amiro and Dolph Muise, from Tusket Hill, are in the hospital (also) Robert Muise from Muise's Pt., and George Muise from the Wedge. The rest, I don't know their names, but they are getting along fine.

I don't know if we will ever get off this island or not, but I hope we will; I tell you, it is a lonesome place. The only company we get is the doctor's boat. She comes here twice a day.

This is all for to-day. Please leave a little space in the Light for these few lines. Don't be frightened of this paper. It has been fumigated. There is no danger.

Yours truly
REUBEN S.
Sad Accident at Canaan,April,1899

SAD ACCIDENT AT CANAAN

Ten Year Old Daughter of Norman Tinkham Burned to Death Near Her Home

Canaan, Yar., Apr.17-

On Tuesday afternoon of last week Flora Tinkham, with her two sisters Lily and Nora, left their home to play. One of them proposed building a fire on a large rock about three minutes'walk from the house. They acted upon this with childish glee, and put a can on the fire filled with water and teaberry leaves. When they thought they were ready to serve, little Flora went to remove the can, taking the edge of her dress skirt as a holder. The flames caught it and her sister Lily sprang to put out the fire. The shock being too much for her she fainted. Then Flora screamed, and trying with her hands to quench the flames became bewildered, took a few steps and fell.

A man working near by heard the cry and rushed to the spot. He tore off the remaining clothing from the child and wished to carry her to the house, but she insisted on walking as her feet had not recieved any injuries. She remained conscious until half an hour before her death, which took place before midnight, and talked rationally, though enduring exquisite agony. At the same time she was devoured with a raving thirst and drank quantities of water. Dr. Morse was called and did all he could to alleviate her sufferings until Providence removed her to rest.

She was a bright, intelligent child. She spent part of the past year with her brother in Tusket and while there made many friends among her playmates at school. Rev. M. Brown, assisted by Rev. Mr. Osser, conducted services from the home and in the hall at Wilson's Bridge, where interment took place. The funeral services were largely attended on Friday 14th. The members of the Sunday school class, of which she was one, marched in procession, and the bearers were four members of the same Sunday school. The floral tributes were very pretty. The bereaved parents and family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in this sudden affliction. Mr. Norman Tinkham was away from home at the time of the accident.
************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1899/April 20ieth issue

Glenwood....Oct.5.----

Death ever active has again entered our community and taken two of our elderly citizens. Mr. Joseph Roberts died on Sept. 27th at the age of 68 years. He had been ill for some time, but a few days before his death grew worse until he died. He leaves a widow and two sons, also a large number of relatives and friends. Mr. Roberts was a member of the Free Baptist church here. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Freeman, assisted by the Baptist minister Rev. Mr. Brown.

Mr. Uriah Crowell died on the 28th ult. Had he lived until the 4th of this month he would have been 80 years of age. Mr. Crowell had been feeble for some time, but for the last few weeks had seemed to enjoy better health. Only the day before his death he was able to go out to see his children and neighbors. He leaves a widow and six children and many relatives and friends. Mr. Crowell was also a member of the Free Baptist church. Rev. J.W. Freeman preached the funeral sermon.

A very pretty wedding occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Herbert Abbott, North Grovesland, Mass., last Wednesday evening, when Miss Mary E. Miner sister of Mrs. Abbott, was united in marriage to Mr. Rodman E. Crowell, of Haverhill, formerly of this place. The bride was becomingly attired in a gown of heliotrope, trimmed with lace and wore white asters. She was attended by her niece, Miss Alice M. Abbott. Mr. W.D. Bridge acted as best man. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Alexander Sloan, pastor of the Congregational church. The wedding march was played by Miss Nellie Abbott, niece of the bride. The parlor was beautifully decorated with flowers. After the ceremony the company retired to the dining room where the luncheon was served by the hostess, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fowler. Mr. and Mrs. Crowell left for Brookline amid a shower of rice.
************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1897:Oct.7th issue

Shag Harbor on Fire/1897/Oct 17th

SHAG HARBOR -Oct. 18.-

Sunday Oct. 17th is a day that will long be remembered in this place. Years ago, when heavily wooded, it has been visited by forest fires but even then the damage was chiefly confined to destruction of timber, but now with the woods nearly all cut away we never entertained a thought of the possibility of a visit from the fire fiend. With the present unusally dry season everything presented a fine opportunity for it. On Sunday morning the place was enveloped in smoke, it being impossible to see any distance, the high wind which sprang up in the night having rapidly brought down on us the fire which for some time has been smouldering to the north of us, presumably left by the contractors who have been clearing the right of way for the railroad. The rapid pace at which it came on and everything so inflammable - the earth burning to a depth of three or four inches - soon brought it in dangerous proximity to the houses. About 10 a.m. the barn of Capt. Isaac A. Nickerson caught on fire and despite all possible efforts soon communicated to the house and both buildings within thirty minutes were a mass of ruins. Very little was saved from the buildings on which we understand there is no insurance. Considerable difficulty was experienced in preventing the fire spreading to the buildings of Capt. S. W. Kendrick. Bridges in the street were on fire together with the fences, Temperance Hall was in danger, but this was extinguished. Soon after smoke was seen issuing from a corner of the F.B. church and investigation showed it to be on fire underneath but not having much headway was soon under control. By this time efforts to turn the fire were abandoned and everyone worked to procure supplies of water. Such a Sunday was never known before in Shag Harbor. Men and boys were busily engaged in filling every available utensil with water and teams were conveying them from the sea to the various houses for uses in emergency. Everyone was up through the night and at many houses it was only by constantly wetting the buildings and beating back the fire that they were saved. Many removed their possessions from the houses and others were ready packed, not knowing where to find a place of security. The worst of the fire appears to be over, although with the fire so deep in the turf and with the high winds there is yet much danger. It has spread eastward and there are heavy fires on and near Bear Point to-day. Great sympathy is felt for Capt. Nickerson and family in their loss, he being at Halifax in schr. Hattie S., with a cargo of herring and will return to find only blackened ruins in place of the comfortable home he left. The fire is said to have originated from the railroad and partly from some set by individuals, but those whose negligence caused so much destruction should be made to pay for it.
***************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1897/Oct. 21st Issue

Carleton- Oct.18.-

On Sunday, the 10th inst., the Presbyterian church, which has been undergoing repairs for public worship for some time was re-opened for public worship. The whole building, now thoroughly repaired and painted within and without, presents a most striking appearance, and is an ornament to this already charming neighborhood. It is plain to be seen that the congregation seek to give their best to the service of God. In all the alterations and improvements about the church neatness judgment and good taste are abundantly manifest. The neat and dainty exterior pleases the eye, and invites the entrance; while within, the audience room with its soft and harmonious coloring and modest but beautiful decorative work at once gratifies refined taste and gives an impression of quiet beauty and repose so appropriate to a place of worship. The enterprise of the congregation is to be recommended. Without doubt, Presbyterianism is represented here by one of the neatest and most beautiful churches to be found in our country districts.

Much praise in securing this gratifying result is due to the artistic taste and skilled workmanship of Mr. Alvin Earle, and his assistants of Yarmouth, who did the entire work of painting and decoration.

A pleasing feature of the opening services was the introduction and use of the new "Books of Praise," recently issued for the Presbyterian church in Canada for the famous University Press of Oxford, England.

The community is indebted to the interest and activity of our friends Messrs. J.Croll Gillis and Fred C. Ryerson for a very enjoyable concert in the Baptist church a few days since. These gentlemen were assisted by Miss Deinstadt, the Misses Killam and Messrs. Medcalfe and Dane all of Yarmouth. The programme included a good selection of vocal and instrumental music, and reading. Every part was well rendered and thoroughly enjoyed by all present.
*******************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light:1897: Oct. 21st Issue

Died:

Entered into life eternal, June 21, 1897, Dea.W.H. Gridley, of Yarmouth, N.S., in the 78th year of his age, son of the late Richard Gridley, of Boston, Mass., grand-son of General Richard Gridley of the same, and great, grandson of Artillery Capt. Richard Gridley, County Essex, England.
**********************************************
Obituary:

Deacon W.H. Gridley pased away from earth on Monday last, after a long and painful illness, aged 77 years. Although he was "full of years" and his friends must have expected the summons ere long, yet none who loved the best type of citizen can hear of his death without regret. In every walk of life he was all that a citizen should be. His family are grown up and some have left the home nest but no doubt they will long miss the wise counsels of a good father. We convey the sympathy of the town to the sorrowing widow and family. The funeral took place yesterday and was very largely attended.
****************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1897:June 24th issue

For more information about his memorial service see page 1 of the July 1st issue, of the Yarmouth Light:1897

Tusket Falls-Aug. 21st-

One day last week two women, Mrs. James Gavel and Mrs. Norman Gavel and little boy, got lost in the woods. They went to look for cattle and getting "out of their reckoning" wandered about all day till darkness overtook them and had to stay out all night. It being rainy and stormy, they passed a very uncomfortable night. Next morning a crowd of men turned out to seek for them. The first to find them were Charles Wood and Percy Hatfield. The lost ones were glad to give up their search for cattle and return home weary and hungry.
***********************************************
From the Yarmouth Light:1897: Sept. 2nd issue

Belleville - Aug. 10.

Mr. Alfred Lefore, before reported in these columns, who it will be remembered cut his leg with an axe last winter and who has been laid up ever since, left to-day for the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, for a course of treatment.

A small boy, aged ten years, son of Mr. Peter Doucette, was drowned in the Eel Lake, while bathing this afternoon. The body has been recovered.

The first ticket sold at this station was bought by Miss Linda Duncanson, of Quinan, for the Pubnico grand picnic. The railway time table No. 1 gives good satisfaction here. Those fortunate enough to have two clocks have already put one on the Standard time.

Your scribe was shown two pieces of print calico sewed together by Mrs. Isaiah Muise, aged 87 years, and without glasses, that would make a much younger woman feel proud to do so fine a job of sewing. The seam has 15 very fine stitches in an inch. Can any other older lady in this county beat that.
**************************************************
Reynardton -Aug.1-

Mr. Dixon is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. Benj.
Protection of Game: Four American Citizens Arrested on Charge of Violating the N.S. Game Laws:Carleton, 1897

PROTECTION OF GAME

Four American Citizens Arrested on Charge of Violating the N.S. Game Law

The Game Laws of Nova Scotia are somewhat stringent but not more so that is demanded by the necessities of the case, if we are to believe those who have made a study of the habits of the denizens of our forests. Perhaps the most lordly game in America is the moose of Canada. The wilds of Nova Scotia are fairly well stocked with moose, and while this animal is given a fighting chance it seems likely that it will continue in sufficient numbers to furnish legitimate hunting for residents of the province and such non-residents as chose to comply with the laws of the land. It is quite evident, however, that the well known fleetness and acute senses of this animal would not save the species were an indiscriminate slaughter allowed, irrespective of time and manner. The same might be said with regard to smaller game. Every person with the instinct of good citizenship feels bound to obey the provisions of the game laws and to uphold the enforcement of the same when any flagrant or intentional violation is brought to light.

Thus it was that on Tuesday night the good citizens of Yarmouth took a sort of grim satisfaction in learning that four California capitalists who had been hunting in this province contrary to the game laws, had been detained when about to take passage on their return to the United States, and required to appear before the court and answer for their offence.

Information was laid by Mr. C.R. Kelley, agent of the Game and Inland Fisheries Protection Society of Nova Scotia, before Stipendiary Geo. R. Smith, who issued the papers for the arrest of Messrs. Benjamin, David, Daniel, and Edmund Allen, of the United States for pursuing game in the Province of Nova Scotia with the intent to kill, without a license, they not having domicile in the said province. The papers were placed in the hands of the police and the arrest was made just before the steamer sailed for Boston. Messrs. Allen retained Mr. Geo. Bingay as counsel while Mr. S.H. Pelton was retained for the Game Society. The case did not come before the court, as a settlement was arranged by which the accused paid game license fees and costs to the amount of about $50.

The agent claims to have evidence that the laws were broken, and that a trial would most likely have resulted in a fine in addition to the other expenses, but he had no desire to harass these gentlemen, merely wishing to uphold the dignity of the law.

THE OTHER SIDE.

Messrs. Allen brothers called at the LIGHT office yesterday morning and expressed their wish to make a statement for publication in connection with their arrest for the alleged violation of the game laws of Nova Scotia. They claimed that they had been branded as law-breakers without any good and sufficient cause and they wished to set themselves right before the public.

There was certainly nothing in the appearance of any of the four gentlemen which would suggest that they belonged to the law-breaking class. On the contrary, all had a good and prosperous look --- a look indicating that they were able to enjoy life as it is found on this mundane spere and that they were willing that others should do the same.

While the Editor was wondering how it was that California could have produced four such handsome men in succession, he was informed that they were Nova Scotians by birth.

Their story is that they were born on the David Allen homestead of 320 acres, in the village of Carleton, County of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Like many others of our promising young men, they removed to the United States, and two of them are engaged in the fruit export business in Los Angeles, Cal., and the two others are settled in Massachusetts. Two sisters are also living in Mass. All being in comfortable circumstances they resolved that the old homestead should remain in the family in order that any one or more of the brothers and sisters could visit it as they felt disposed.

This year it was arranged that there should be a family reunion. The two brothers from California came on and met the brothers and sisters of Massachusetts, and all proceeded to the old home in Carleton to enjoy each other's society again and to taste once more for a brief period the sweets of childhood's happy hours.

One of the brothers thought his transition to boyhood's estate would be more easy if he brought a small gun. He admits that he took the gun out and tramped around a little with the hope of seeing a stray partridge. He claims, however, that he was not off their own property with the gun, that he did not shoot any game and that he did not see any game to shoot.

As may be imagined the brothers and sisters prolonged their stay just as long as their business and domestic arrangements would allow, which was until Tuesday evening. On that evening they embarked on S.S. Boston on their return to their homes in the States. Their reveries over the happy hours spent on the old homestead and their regrets that their affairs would not permit of a longer enjoyment of the healthful beauties of old Acadia, were rudely interrupted by the strong arm of the law, when the guilty and innocent alike (with the exception of the ladies) were arrested and hustled up street like a pack of common blacklegs, threatened with imprisonment, fines, etc.

They placed their case in the hands of a lawyer to make the best arrangement possible with the least delay, as they could not afford to remain in Yarmouth for an indefinite period to fight a law suit. As it was they lost a day and were put to considerable expense which they consider a piece of gross injustice. On coming to Yarmouth they had no desire to break the laws of the land, and seeing that they are natives of Nova Scotia and owners of property here they think it hard that they should be made the victims of some technicality of the law, or the whim of some official.

Messrs. Allen left for the United States on S.S. Yarmouth last evening.
*******************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light: 1897: September 23rd issue

Mr.& Mrs. John Holmes Golden Wedding Aug. 11th, 1897

Matrimonial

Mr. and Mrs. John Holmes passed the golden milestone of their wedded life on Wednesday, Aug. 11th. The event was celebrated at their home at Central Chebogue on the afternoon and evening of that day, over seventy relatives and friends being present. The rooms were beautifully decorated with flowers and ferns, many of which were sent by friends as tokens of their love and esteem for the venerable couple. Refreshments were served. The wedding cakes bore the dates 1847 and 1897 and were beautifully and artistically decorated. At 8p.m. the Rev. Joseph Robbins, assisted by the Rev. P.R. Foster, performed the marriage ceremony, the bride and groom renewing their vows of half a century ago. The presents were numerous and beautiful, and their glittering beauty symbolized the golden wishes of the donors. Among those present were seven children and three grand-children, representing the entire family--- the first reunion in twenty years. Most of them came from a long distance to celebrate the happy event. There were also present the five sisters and two brothers of Mrs. Holmes, with their families. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes have spent their entire marriage life in the house they now occupy. Mr. Holmes has reached the age of seventy-six years. He was born in the house to which he brought his bride a half a century ago. An interesting incident in connection with this gathering was the presence of Mr. Wallace Crosby, whose first marriage was solemnized in this house fifty-seven years years ago, the bride being a sister to Mr. Holmes. Mrs. Holmes is the eldest daughter of the late Comfort Haley, and was born at the old homestead in Salem, which still belongs to the family. At the close of the evening all present joined in singing, "God be with you till we meet again." The guests departed showering good wishes and benedictions upon those they had gathered to honor.
******************************************
from the Yarmouth Light: 1897: Aug. 19th issue

Mrs. Isaac White died Sept. 1st, 1897

Tusket Falls--- Sept. 8

With feelings of intense sadness we relate the death of Mrs. Isaac White, which occurred Sept. 1st. Although far advanced in years, her youthful appearance caused her friends to hope that years of comfort were before her. But a few weeks ago, she was stricken down and took to her bed. She grew weaker day by day until her physician pronounced the end near.

Before she married Mr. White she was the widow of the late J.G. Hamilton. Mrs. White was a very estimable lady, a faithful Christian and a devoted wife and mother. She was a member of the Baptist church of Deerfield, until about twelve years ago, when she joined the Free Baptist church of New Brunswick, and her exemplary life and kind and gentle manner caused her to be loved by all.

The funeral was largely attended. The sermon from Rev.XXII, 5, "And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light; and they shall reign for ever and ever," was eloquently delivered by Rev. M. W. Brown. She leaves a husband, five sons and three daughters. The children are: J.G. Hamilton, of Calais, Me.; Nathan Hamilton of Lynn, Mass.; W.J. Hamilton, in Western states; Simon Hamilton, of Ohio N.S.; George White, of Lynn, Mass.; Mrs. Robert Allen, of Belle Neck, N.S.; Mrs. Harris Gavel and Mrs. John Hatfield, of Gavelton, N.S. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to them, in this, their hour of sorrow and sad bereavement.
*****************************************************
From the Yarmouth Light:1897, Sept. 9th issue

It must have been hard on the family. From the death certificate, it was his daughter Estella who gave the information. Does anyone know the story behind the murder?
